Old folk had big tobacco telling them cigs are safe and even good for you and your baby, pregnant lady. Young folk have multiple methods telling em not to smoke/vape.
This just demonstrates that the tobacco industry wasted billions in commercials, lobbying and corruption to convince people they're safe, could've saved that money and made bank anyway
Yes, if you replace smoking with vaping it will be cheaper. If you're doing both then you're probably still saving money but I haven't met anyone who went to vaping and still enjoyed the taste of cigs after a few days.
You can just take zynns pouches of the literal chemical nicotine + sugar and menthol flavoring. Slowed absorption then smoking drug has to be absorbed through gums.
You mean Vapes? Aren't those things less worse than cigarettes? Cos they don't burn anything hence you don't get any tar into your lungs which clogs them up.
IIRC most documented issues were from questionable THC cartridges people were buying online. Not condoning vaping either way here, but worth noting the difference.
as far as i know, they’re less bad than cigs, but still far from free of consequences + the nicotine dependence they give you can lead to people trying cigarettes. switching from cigs to vaping is an unambiguous good, switching from no nicotine to vaping is bad
If anyone starts vaping a strawberry mango vape they're not going to try a cigarette that tastes like a corpses asshole and think "This is delicious give me a pack of Marlboro's!"
It's vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol, not water. Also just research the aromatic liquid you're using to minimize the harm to nicotine only (i.e. don't vape carcinogenic shit). The vapor is also not (very hot) when it reaches your respiratory system.
Nicotine addiction is the real problem, and it's much worse than tobacco in my experience. If you're fine with having to use a stimulant to maintain the mood baseline, then it's probably worth it.
I like lighters and I have nothing else to use them for. I smoked for a few years but now I vape and my lighters just sit in a drawer all sad and lonely
There is no substance that can control you, people crave cigarettes because they like the effects, they still have a choice on whether or not to act on the cravings. If they could control you, nobody would be able to quit, and since there are people who have quit, that must mean they aren’t being controlled
the ones who quit were simply dragged in another direction by different forces, like social pressure, anxiety over health, etc. also by your logic those who never quit WERE controlled, but honestly whether they quit or not is irrelevant, they couldn't choose whether or not to crave cigarettes, so their desires were controlled.
man is free to do as he wills but not to will as he wills -Arthur Schopenhauer
Uh no, the ones who didn’t quit don’t lack the ability to quit, they lack the willingness or discipline to quit.
Cravings have nothing to do with free will. If X makes brain feel good, brain will want more of X, that’s all a craving is. You decide whether or not you take X or not.
The craving isn’t proof that there is no free will, the craving is just your body using logic (X felt good, want more X)
He’s wrong. He’s arguing that because he can predict how someone will react to a given stimuli, that is somehow proof that there is no free will.
In his own example, if someone takes your cows, you need to react or else they’re going to come and take more. That’s just called logic. Your brain is making the connection between that person and you having 1 fewer cows, and then extrapolating that to what could happened in the future (which is that they’ll take another cow). To say that that is proof that there is no free will is absurd. Just because you can predict the outcome, that isn’t proof that there is no free will.
I predict that you’ll eat something today, tomorrow, and likely the day after. That isn’t proof that you don’t have free will, the only thing it proves is that I have the ability to recognize a pattern and predict an outcome based on the available data.
Yeah I love listening to the opinions of people who have never smoked when we're talking about what smoking feels like. Crazy how many people must force themselves to keep smoking these unpleasant cigarettes that have no effect for weeks until they get addicted. It's the same way with drugs. Heroin doesn't do anything for you, it doesn't even make you feel good! It's just because you're addictive!
This is probably the worst advice you'll ever give in your life, do not even suggest smoking one cigarette. Just one by itself is enough to get someone hooked.
As a kid, I was always around them, to the point that I enjoyed how they smelled. I never had guidance in that way, so I was never aware of how dangerous they were.
Then, I started smoking as a teen and enjoyed it to the point that I came back for more. For context, I'm a yemeni-american dude who grew up in a rural small town. When it so happened that other teens at my school were smoking as well, it helped me to fit in better, too, further fueling my growing addiction.
When you're addicted but wanna quit, it feels like you're a metaphorical fly stuck in a metaphorical spiderweb waiting for a metaphorical spider to descend upon you while you try to make your metaphorical escape
People find it soothing and calms the nerves. That's it, that's literally the only reason people genuinely smoke besides their addictions or to look cool to others.
Nicotine is a stimulant. It's not soothing, but removing the withdrawal feeling is misinterpreted as soothing by the addict's brain. It's like putting on really tight shoes to feel the pleasure of taking them off.
No lol, that would be mean nobody would enjoy smoking unless they had an addiction. If the only thing enjoyable about smoking was getting rid of the withdrawals, why would anyone ever smoke enough to get addicted in the first place?
There are over a billion tobacco users in the world. Are you saying you think that every single one of them just forced themselves to pretend to enjoy something that was not actually a positive experience in any way, simply because of societal pressure? Second question, have you ever smoked? Because if the answer is no, you're somehow even less qualified to offer your opinion on this than you already were. This isn't one of those agree to disagree, difference of opinion situations lol, you are just factually, verifiably wrong, so I'm guessing you're a kid, otherwise this is a shockingly ignorant thing to believe.
There are over a billion tobacco users in the world
Kinda my point.
have you ever smoked
Yes, I was heavily addicted to nicotine for 5 years, and I also thought that I was gaining pleasure from it, until I finally realized that I was just getting relief.
If you want to keep trying to hook a new generation of smokers, go ahead, but I'd prefer to do something decent and help warn them that it's not all that it's cracked up to be.
And I'm telling you that it's a sympathetic nervous system activator. Nothing about its biological action would lead to soothing effects. The soothing feeling of nicotine is relief of withdrawal pangs.
It is coke too. It has a different effect on people with adhd, as most stimulants. Many people discover that way they have it. It has effects that may appear somewhat similar to adhd medications. It is well documented in scientific literature. The effects of nicotine on adhd instead are less studied, but it appears that some people experience increased focus and concentration, thus instinctively using it as self medication, while others report increased irritability and worsened hyperactivity
Yeah I see now, I’ve got adhd myself, definitely found nicotine a potent focus enhancer, but only when In low doses over longer times (like the weaker zyns, stronger stuff just give headaches without the focus effect), and the stuff they give us prescription wise is crazy when it comes to the focus and general hyperness, but it always made me feel like shit, messed with my emotions a ton, super muted and dull, but not depressive or anything, when I was on it I’d barely say a word unprompted, I’d basically only respond to others
It is not anecdotal tho, it is well documented in scientific literature that cocaine and other stimulant drugs have a different effect on people with adhd
If that's the case then you should phrase it as such. And provide sources to back up your claims. Or not. It's the internet, no one can make you do anything.
Yes that is a thing, as someone with ADHD. Coke and Molly don’t really feel “good” to me, just calming. This is because these things use dopamine, but us (unmedicated) ADHD folk already have a baseline lack of dopamine, so these substances just bring us to normal levels of dopamine (unless if you take a shit ton)
Alright then. Have you ever smoked/vaped? Because I have and I can confirm that yes even the very first time I felt the soothing effects. I don’t care about the biochemistry of this, I know what I felt. We barely know how sentience works anyway, it’s not that surprising to have outliers in psychoactive substances.
Of course he hasn't lol this is the opinion of someone who thinks they know all about smoking because they read about it extensively. It's the same people who try to tell you that nobody actually enjoys smoking and it's just the addiction. I'm not defending smoking or saying anyone should smoke, but the opinion on what smoking feels like from someone who has never smoked is less than worthless.
Low doses of nicotine desensitize certain B2 receptors and only stimulate those receptors at higher doses. A quick pubmed search would have given you a chance to admit you were mistaken rather than doubling down
I hate to say it but it’s only really a feeling that can be experienced firsthand. It’s like waking up after a refreshing 8 hours of sleep and drinking a cup of coffee… for a few minutes before it wears off and you have to take another drag to get the feeling again.
The light headedness is from the vasoconstriction which goes away fast, within minutes like you said. But nicotine’s psychoactive effects like euphoria or calmness actually last a lot longer. Some people confuse the lightheadedness with the actual complete buzz, so they take another hit. You need to let it marinate a little. In my experience the best effects are around 20 or so minutes.
I smoked off and on for 20 years generally limited to when I was drinking. I don't drink or smoke anymore the desire to smoke reduces over time but it is definitely hard to quit and quitting drinking has helped too that's when I'd get the greatest urges to smoke.
I haven’t smoked cigarettes, but I used to be addicted to vaping. The first time I did it, it was jarring and unpleasant. But that was enough to start the cycle of withdrawal and relapse. It wouldn’t be soothing if I wasn’t already addicted and craving it.
Sort of? Speaking as a horrid nicotine addict, it’s both. The best way I can describe it is that nicotine DOES relax me, but if I don’t get it regularly then I find that stress bothers me more.
Exactly that. Cigarettes rope you in at first with a really nice buzz. Indulging in other vices like weed and alcohol helps prolong that feeling. But after taking up smoking, while the relief of nicotine withdrawal keeps you smoking, but on a daily basis when you don't experience withdrawal, just the act of smoking can help ground and relax you. It's a ritual you come to enjoy. I've been trying to quit using vaping, but unlike a cigarette, you don't sit there for 5 minutes enjoying it. The actual act of smoking seems far more addictive than the nicotine in it.
I tried a cigarette once or twice in college and I will tell you, aside from nicotine itself, there is absolutely some shit in there that makes you feel good, maybe by way of combination with the nicotine, or the tobacco plant itself has additional chemicals, idk. It's way different even from vaping which does include nicotine as an option, its a solid rush of euphoria the first time you take a puff of a cigarette, if you're not immediately coughing it out. I opted never to have one again because I recognized exactly why cigarettes are addictive, and you will know if you try it yourself.
This is not an endorsement to go and try it out, I already have experienced addictions of other kinds, and cigarettes/tobacco based smoking products could have been one of them if I wasn't as careful not to go out of my way to have another.
I've hit my wife's vape a couple times when im really drunk. There is a wave of relax that happens when I hit it. There is something to it, I can understand it, but I would never smoke or vape regularly, especially because i know after a while the addiction is crazy
Nicotine has a noticeable buzz. Nicotine is also clinically proven to increase neuroplastisity and alertness. That said, the benefits are short lived and do not outweigh the severe long-term detriments to your health.
Long and short, there is a reason people choose to injest Nicotine and tobacco products. I'm a Nicotine enjoyer but I also acknowledge it isn't sustainable in the long run
Nicotine is a stimulant, but it has the effect of allowing one to collect their thoughts. I remember this is why I started smoking a habitually, because when I smoked my mind got quiet.
Nah, the effects actually noticeably lessens overtime. I smoked for a few years, limiting myself to three a day. Eventually I got bored with it because I didn't get an effect from it. The reason so many smokers struggle is because they keep increasing their use to reach the same high.
People also like smoking because they enjoy the sensation. This is like saying people enjoy candy because sugar gives you energy or something. It also tastes good. It's just kinda hard to explain because it's a form of consumption that's different from eating or drinking.
Peer pressure back in the day. Social interactions as well. Extra breaks at work. Great reasons? No, but there were a lot of years when smoking was socially encouraged.
Corporations spent billions to create the perception that smoking is cool. Once it settled in the cycle fuels itself. Modern cigarettes are literally a made up product
Bcz nicotine addiction doesn't let you stop smoking, which I feel is just another excuse for smokers to not quit. No addiction is actually that hard to quit, ik some people get jolts when they are trying to quit, I used to get those jolts myself, and the biggest reason for not quitting is, it's literally available everywhere.
3-4 weeks roughly, that period is a nightmare, irritation, anxiety, insomnia, and the worst is random jolts in random parts of your body. But then they start to fade away.
Hey. Good for you to quit smoking. Can I ask how so?
Im trying to quit but a day without smoking just makes me anxious and a bit angry and sad. Ive become dependent.
Nicotine actually improves your brain activity a bit, that's why every time you smoke a cig you think about quitting - you got a little bit smarter for a moment.
you actually get a buzz from nicotine when starting off
ask any chronic smoker/vaper when they started, and they’ll nine times out of ten give you an age ranging from 9-16. it gets you when you’re young, have a need to feel good/likeable/whatever else would get someone to start, and it turns into an addiction when you realize that you don’t feel the buzz anymore and you can’t seem to stop.
I think the age range definitely had an impact. Tried them at 20, found them uninteresting and felt that the buzz was kinda lame. Went back to smoking weed every few weeks.
Teens don’t have strong impulse control or long term risk evaluation skills. It’s like the quintessential thing that makes them teenagers.
Bad impulse control means that if they try it (which many will) it will be hard to stop. When you’re a teen though, due to your poor risk evaluation you wrongly assume you’re different and you’ll be able to stop.
Low and behold you weren’t different and now youre addicted to a notoriously difficult drug to quit.
Teens didn’t stop picking up smoking because we found out it caused cancer, they quit because we demonized it so hard (rightfully so) that it was no longer cool enough to try. When they don’t try it they don’t get addicted. Then vaping came around and was free of that stigma. Teens started vaping because it was cool, and now we’re back where we started in many senses.
the only way i was able to get a break at my first ever job was to smoke cigarettes because it was the only time you could stop cooking or washing dishes. then after i left, i chose to continue the habit. i stopped smoking cigarettes before moving to vapes a few years ago and i’m starting to use pouches to not vape and hopefully soon kick it altogether.
Dude you could have just lied and said, "I'm going out for a smoke break," and stood outside having a snack for 5 minutes, I used to do that.
Good job on your path to quitting though. 👏
I started smoking weed first and never touched a cigarette until one day I just said fuck it and took a puff. That was 8 years ago and I still haven't quit :(
Sometimes I feel like dying. BUT I don't want it to happen now. Cigarettes literally taste like death and nowadays after a packet (week or two) I already feel emotionally better and stop.
Yeah I never understand smoking -like it doesn't give you any effect except statifying your addiction that you wouldn't have if you wouldn't have started....
Like I get alcohol caffein or hell even hard drugs - they do something - something that you want them to.
Wtf ... ofcause it has an 'effect' but you do not get addicted to the nice feeling you get, because there is alcoholics who litterly are constantly in pain and nauseous because of the alcohol - you get a chemical addiction, your brain gets addicted to the substance, it does NOT have to feel nice ....
I'm just saying that your statement of "like it doesn't give you any effect except satisfying your addiction" is plain wrong. Nicotine definitely has an effect, or else we'd have never even started to smoke it to begin with.
In the same way that weed isn’t inherently addictive but, you can become addicted to the effects of the weed. There’s no chemical that’s makes you have an urge to consume it again, it’s what that chemical does to your body that makes you want more so you can experience those effects again. Nicotine is the same.
Well you seem to be misunderstanding the effects of the drug nicotine for starters. Nicotine is a nervous system stimulant its paradoxical relaxation effects. Meaning you get a buzz while simultaneously feeling relaxed.
Like a cup of coffee and .01mg of Xanax in a carcinogenic, terrible tasting and smelling, socially judged and combustible stick. Makes you feel cool of you happen to time travel to pre year 2000 or so as well.
Stupid question maybe but you did you inhale? Smoke the whole thing? Especially those first ones give you a head rush normally. Side story when I first started smoking I’d nicked a few from my mom’s pack.
One day I found an entire forgotten pack in a drawer. Proceeded to smoke maybe half the pack in a short amount of time (probably weighed close to 100lbs young teen) I got so sick I vomited so forcibly it came out my nose. Thought I was going to die. Felt fine maybe 30 minutes later and proceeded to smoke for 15 years or so after.
Smoking is terrible, but nicotine def has some nice effects. I have to go several hours without having it in order to feel any effects, which is harder to do with vaping as you can sneak hits a lot of places. Lozenges and pouches are less destructive an deliver nicotine in a more delayed fashion but you can still get a nice rush from them if you don’t use them constantly. A nurse practitioner I see uses nicotine gum having never smoked because she likes the imagined cognitive effects.
Right now, Altria (rebranded from Philip Morris, ticker symbol $MO) is the highest paying stock amongst the "Dividend Kings"
Every quarter when I get my juicy $MO deposit in my brokerage account, I'm grateful to those dipshit addicts who are poisoning themselves for my benefit.
PM is only exploding because they’re buying out all the tobacco free nicotine pouch companies and currently own Zyn. They’ve become extremely popular in the last 5 years to the point PM wants to phase out their tobacco products by 2030.
Be a smoker like me, who is getting the best of both worlds: I very rarely ever smoke a cigarette (one or two during an entire month when hanging out with friends), which means I'm far from being addicted, but I also get the nicotine high, which I like to call the "peace of mind". It does calm me down when stressed, despite not actively being a smoker. I force myself not to smoke further to avoid addiction. Since I'm not an addict, I always feel the effect in full!
Moderation, fellas. Oh, and I apply the same to alcohol. Not addicted either but still feels good, when rarely taken.
I did ask my mother to stop several times because I want her in my life, same as my best friend who is addicted, got crohn's disease, and still can't stop even when doctors told him it will make it worse and could die young.
But also you sound like you have something stuck up your ass, so I'm not surprised no one really cared..
But everybody that smokes tell me they would like to stop but are unable too. So their choice isn't even to smoke, it's a loss of control over yourself.
And they get to enjoy less of their time because it just kills you sooner and makes your life worse.
I was heavily addicted to weed, I knew these things but was unable to stop for years, even tho i wanted it so bad.
If the guy wants to act cool about being ignorant to the problems he's willingly doing to his body, I'm sure he will find his people.
Everybody has the ability to stop it's the willpower to actually do it. Everything in life is a choice and I'm not saying addiction isn't a hard thing to break but it's ultimately up to the person to break the cycle.
But everybody that smokes tell me they would like to stop but are unable too. So their choice isn't even to smoke, it's a loss of control over yourself.
And they get to enjoy less of their time because it just kills you sooner and makes your life worse.

For me it was a nice little “reward” and something to look forward to.
Like on a Saturday you make a bet with yourself “after I vacuum, wipe the floors, cleans the living room, empty/fill the dishwasher and put away stuff in kitchen, THEN I can have a ciggie and Celsius Raspberry Açai on the balcony”.
As a result you did those tasks fast AF and then sat on the balcony feeling smug and content with the nicotine filling your lungs and started seeing music and hearing colours because boy you just downed 200 mg caffeine under five minutes and your caffeine intake is at most two cups of green tea per day you’re in for quite a ride partner better get that diaper on and don’t trust no damn fart.
I smoked for a total of six years, didn’t “really” want to quit but I saw those white trash, low income smoke hags that had their whole existence about cigarettes and smoking (smoking since they were 10yo or sumtin) every fifth minute they’re awake and didn’t want to be associated with them.
Also, I’m a sigma male and I ain’t letting a paper tube with dried leaves control my life and wallet, that’s what femboys and e-girls are for.
They’re upwards of $15-16 in my state for a pack. I enjoy a cig every once in awhile but at that price it’s just an enormous waste of money. You can buy nicotine pouches for $4-5 a pack here too which provide the same buzz.
I smoked for 10 years. 90% of the high is just satisfying the cravings. They say it's good for your mental health to have an easily satisfied craving. But that's the only thing. They are the most useless inventions of humanity
Because your grandfather was told it made him healthier. And after a conditioning period, it kinda did. Then he felt like shit when he didn't smoke, kept smoking and felt better because of it.
Then he tells your dad he should smoke. Your dad might not like the idea, but enough grandfathers telling enough dads, eventually one picks up the habit. Now you see your friend is smoking, so you start too. The same thing happens to your dad. But then he sees new studies saying they cause cancer. Your grandpa did croak from lung disease. Maybe your dad should stop?
You get born. Your dad still smokes, but he tells you no. These things will kill ya. But your dad is your hero, and that cool kid down the road with the mullet and the black eye smokes too, and one day he offers you one. You take it, and try it. Gross. These things must kill you. Anything that foul must.
But then some of the richer kids start bringing these new things to school. They look like smokes, send puffs of smoke out, but smell and taste like cotton candy. These must be okay. Someone tells you they're even better than smokes, because they don't have the tar and nicotine. They just look cool and taste good. You pick it up.
One day, your mate offers you a puff from his vape and it makes your head swim. What was that? Nicotine, he says. It's not as bad as they say, he says. It makes him feel good, and its not as bad for you as cigerettes. You should try this mix. It'll make you feel great! So you do. You get a new vape to handle the mix.
One day, someone tells you that vapes will kill you as hard as cigerettes will. Popcorn lung? What's that? That's bullshit. They reckon you should take an edible instead. These aren't addictive, and aren't bad for you at all. If you pace yourself. These are strong. Take it easy. But you can handle it. Plus, these make you feel great! Surely something that makes you feel this good can't be bad for you.
One of my friends used to argue that smokers were stupid and they should just quit. So my other friend was like you couldn't quit if you were a smoker, you idiot. And so the dye was cast and a bet was made. He said that he would smoke for a year and then quit with ease. This was in 1997 and he still smokes. He was indeed, an idiot and we remind him of it constantly.
These days most young people smoking are probably doing so because vaping got to much to keep up with, which is exactly what the big tobacco companies wanted all along.
If you have never been stupid enough to acquire a nicotine addiction, then you will never know the enjoyable mental stimulation it delivers, and ergo never understand it...
A real chad would go out and get addicted to smoking and then quit, just to show he's bigger and smarter than the big tobacco companies, and then he will also be more relatable when he tells all his smoker friends they should quit for their health for the 100th time this week.
The only thing better than the pride of saying ‘I quit. I haven’t smoked a cigarette in months’ is the moment the rush hits you when you have a drunk cigarette. Absolute bliss.
It does have a kind of “high”. It’s a stimulant. I’m guessing it’s like the euphoria you sometimes get when you’ve had just the right amount of caffeine
Whenever I used to go have a cigarette I would always call it a 'break'. I found quitting to be easier when I did the same routine, just without the cigarette.
I found taking a 5-10 minute break, outside taking deep breaths almost life changing.

Letters_to_Dionysus@reddit
addiction is one of the pieces of proof that people dont have free will
RyanBebs@reddit
How does that mean we don’t have free will?
Letters_to_Dionysus@reddit
because a substance existing that can control your desires means your desires can be controlled
RyanBebs@reddit
There is no substance that can control you, people crave cigarettes because they like the effects, they still have a choice on whether or not to act on the cravings. If they could control you, nobody would be able to quit, and since there are people who have quit, that must mean they aren’t being controlled
Letters_to_Dionysus@reddit
the ones who quit were simply dragged in another direction by different forces, like social pressure, anxiety over health, etc. also by your logic those who never quit WERE controlled, but honestly whether they quit or not is irrelevant, they couldn't choose whether or not to crave cigarettes, so their desires were controlled.
man is free to do as he wills but not to will as he wills -Arthur Schopenhauer
RyanBebs@reddit
Uh no, the ones who didn’t quit don’t lack the ability to quit, they lack the willingness or discipline to quit.
Cravings have nothing to do with free will. If X makes brain feel good, brain will want more of X, that’s all a craving is. You decide whether or not you take X or not.
The craving isn’t proof that there is no free will, the craving is just your body using logic (X felt good, want more X)

this is probably more complete than anything else I would respond with
RyanBebs@reddit

Blibbobletto@reddit

The only effects i get from nicotine are feeling dizzy and anxious, how can you get addicted to that? I’d rather do drugs that are fun
viener_schnitzel@reddit
Addicts don’t just feel dizzy and anxious from nicotine lol
Damirirv@reddit
People find it soothing and calms the nerves. That's it, that's literally the only reason people genuinely smoke besides their addictions or to look cool to others.
Armored_Guardian@reddit
Isn’t it soothing only because of the addiction?
Damirirv@reddit
No, the soothing feeling is why people get addicted. If they don't smoke, addicts are constantly stressed.
drfiz98@reddit
Nicotine is a stimulant. It's not soothing, but removing the withdrawal feeling is misinterpreted as soothing by the addict's brain. It's like putting on really tight shoes to feel the pleasure of taking them off.
Blibbobletto@reddit
No lol, that would be mean nobody would enjoy smoking unless they had an addiction. If the only thing enjoyable about smoking was getting rid of the withdrawals, why would anyone ever smoke enough to get addicted in the first place?
quantummidget@reddit
Because society has been telling us our whole lives that there's something good about nicotine - why else would anybody do it?
There isn't, but we convince ourselves for just long enough for the nicotine to start pretending that it is doing something good.
Blibbobletto@reddit
Lol Jesus is that what your life is like? You just get all your opinions from society at large? I can't imagine being that insecure.
Adults enjoy things because they enjoy them. Children enjoy things because they're told to.
quantummidget@reddit
No, I'm just not so naive as to not realise that my psyche is affected by the society around me.
If you live without this, I commend you, you're a truly enlightened being.
Blibbobletto@reddit
There are over a billion tobacco users in the world. Are you saying you think that every single one of them just forced themselves to pretend to enjoy something that was not actually a positive experience in any way, simply because of societal pressure? Second question, have you ever smoked? Because if the answer is no, you're somehow even less qualified to offer your opinion on this than you already were. This isn't one of those agree to disagree, difference of opinion situations lol, you are just factually, verifiably wrong, so I'm guessing you're a kid, otherwise this is a shockingly ignorant thing to believe.
quantummidget@reddit
Kinda my point.
Blibbobletto@reddit
There are plenty of good reasons to explain to people why smoking is bad without having to resort to lying to them
quantummidget@reddit

Go_On_Swan@reddit
Nicotine is pretty well documented for its paradoxical soothing and stimulating effects.
drfiz98@reddit
And I'm telling you that it's a sympathetic nervous system activator. Nothing about its biological action would lead to soothing effects. The soothing feeling of nicotine is relief of withdrawal pangs.
kevink856@reddit
How would this be true when nicotine has immediate documented effects for first time smokers. Withdrawal symptoms can not appear that quickly.
bootyzipperooni@reddit
I've heard of people with adhd using coke for the first time and just feeling less anxious, so it could be something like that?
ArkaneArtificer@reddit
I think you’re talking about meth not coke, and well, amphetamines are prescribed to people with adhd for a reason
bootyzipperooni@reddit
I distinctly heard it was coke. Not dating that's true, but it's what I heard
ArkaneArtificer@reddit
Definitely not coke
Greatgg@reddit
It is coke too. It has a different effect on people with adhd, as most stimulants. Many people discover that way they have it. It has effects that may appear somewhat similar to adhd medications. It is well documented in scientific literature. The effects of nicotine on adhd instead are less studied, but it appears that some people experience increased focus and concentration, thus instinctively using it as self medication, while others report increased irritability and worsened hyperactivity
htmlcoderexe@reddit
Also see: having caffeine to help you fall asleep lol
ArkaneArtificer@reddit
Yeah I see now, I’ve got adhd myself, definitely found nicotine a potent focus enhancer, but only when In low doses over longer times (like the weaker zyns, stronger stuff just give headaches without the focus effect), and the stuff they give us prescription wise is crazy when it comes to the focus and general hyperness, but it always made me feel like shit, messed with my emotions a ton, super muted and dull, but not depressive or anything, when I was on it I’d barely say a word unprompted, I’d basically only respond to others
seething_stew@reddit
And that's the problem with anecdotal evidence.
Greatgg@reddit
It is not anecdotal tho, it is well documented in scientific literature that cocaine and other stimulant drugs have a different effect on people with adhd
seething_stew@reddit
If that's the case then you should phrase it as such. And provide sources to back up your claims. Or not. It's the internet, no one can make you do anything.
IDrinkSulfuricAcid@reddit
Yes that is a thing, as someone with ADHD. Coke and Molly don’t really feel “good” to me, just calming. This is because these things use dopamine, but us (unmedicated) ADHD folk already have a baseline lack of dopamine, so these substances just bring us to normal levels of dopamine (unless if you take a shit ton)
fiftyfourseventeen@reddit
I don't smoke anymore, but when I first smoked a cigarette I felt relaxed
IDrinkSulfuricAcid@reddit
Alright then. Have you ever smoked/vaped? Because I have and I can confirm that yes even the very first time I felt the soothing effects. I don’t care about the biochemistry of this, I know what I felt. We barely know how sentience works anyway, it’s not that surprising to have outliers in psychoactive substances.
Blibbobletto@reddit
Of course he hasn't lol this is the opinion of someone who thinks they know all about smoking because they read about it extensively. It's the same people who try to tell you that nobody actually enjoys smoking and it's just the addiction. I'm not defending smoking or saying anyone should smoke, but the opinion on what smoking feels like from someone who has never smoked is less than worthless.

I hate to say it but it’s only really a feeling that can be experienced firsthand. It’s like waking up after a refreshing 8 hours of sleep and drinking a cup of coffee… for a few minutes before it wears off and you have to take another drag to get the feeling again.
IDrinkSulfuricAcid@reddit
The light headedness is from the vasoconstriction which goes away fast, within minutes like you said. But nicotine’s psychoactive effects like euphoria or calmness actually last a lot longer. Some people confuse the lightheadedness with the actual complete buzz, so they take another hit. You need to let it marinate a little. In my experience the best effects are around 20 or so minutes.
slick987654321@reddit
I smoked off and on for 20 years generally limited to when I was drinking. I don't drink or smoke anymore the desire to smoke reduces over time but it is definitely hard to quit and quitting drinking has helped too that's when I'd get the greatest urges to smoke.
Armored_Guardian@reddit
I haven’t smoked cigarettes, but I used to be addicted to vaping. The first time I did it, it was jarring and unpleasant. But that was enough to start the cycle of withdrawal and relapse. It wouldn’t be soothing if I wasn’t already addicted and craving it.
CaterpillarFun6896@reddit
Sort of? Speaking as a horrid nicotine addict, it’s both. The best way I can describe it is that nicotine DOES relax me, but if I don’t get it regularly then I find that stress bothers me more.
Blibbobletto@reddit
The act of smoking is enjoyable in the same way that eating tasty food is enjoyable. It's not just because it keeps you from starving
Gravesh@reddit
Exactly that. Cigarettes rope you in at first with a really nice buzz. Indulging in other vices like weed and alcohol helps prolong that feeling. But after taking up smoking, while the relief of nicotine withdrawal keeps you smoking, but on a daily basis when you don't experience withdrawal, just the act of smoking can help ground and relax you. It's a ritual you come to enjoy. I've been trying to quit using vaping, but unlike a cigarette, you don't sit there for 5 minutes enjoying it. The actual act of smoking seems far more addictive than the nicotine in it.
kiwidog8@reddit
I tried a cigarette once or twice in college and I will tell you, aside from nicotine itself, there is absolutely some shit in there that makes you feel good, maybe by way of combination with the nicotine, or the tobacco plant itself has additional chemicals, idk. It's way different even from vaping which does include nicotine as an option, its a solid rush of euphoria the first time you take a puff of a cigarette, if you're not immediately coughing it out. I opted never to have one again because I recognized exactly why cigarettes are addictive, and you will know if you try it yourself.
This is not an endorsement to go and try it out, I already have experienced addictions of other kinds, and cigarettes/tobacco based smoking products could have been one of them if I wasn't as careful not to go out of my way to have another.
ace2138@reddit
I've hit my wife's vape a couple times when im really drunk. There is a wave of relax that happens when I hit it. There is something to it, I can understand it, but I would never smoke or vape regularly, especially because i know after a while the addiction is crazy
newaccount669@reddit
Nicotine has a noticeable buzz. Nicotine is also clinically proven to increase neuroplastisity and alertness. That said, the benefits are short lived and do not outweigh the severe long-term detriments to your health.
Long and short, there is a reason people choose to injest Nicotine and tobacco products. I'm a Nicotine enjoyer but I also acknowledge it isn't sustainable in the long run

Kiwi_Doodle@reddit
Nah, the effects actually noticeably lessens overtime. I smoked for a few years, limiting myself to three a day. Eventually I got bored with it because I didn't get an effect from it. The reason so many smokers struggle is because they keep increasing their use to reach the same high.

you actually get a buzz from nicotine when starting off
ask any chronic smoker/vaper when they started, and they’ll nine times out of ten give you an age ranging from 9-16. it gets you when you’re young, have a need to feel good/likeable/whatever else would get someone to start, and it turns into an addiction when you realize that you don’t feel the buzz anymore and you can’t seem to stop.

DjangoCornbread@reddit

Wtf ... ofcause it has an 'effect' but you do not get addicted to the nice feeling you get, because there is alcoholics who litterly are constantly in pain and nauseous because of the alcohol - you get a chemical addiction, your brain gets addicted to the substance, it does NOT have to feel nice ....
LuigiBamba@reddit
Sure, idk. I am not a neuroscientist.
I'm just saying that your statement of "like it doesn't give you any effect except satisfying your addiction" is plain wrong. Nicotine definitely has an effect, or else we'd have never even started to smoke it to begin with.

RyanBebs@reddit
In the same way that weed isn’t inherently addictive but, you can become addicted to the effects of the weed. There’s no chemical that’s makes you have an urge to consume it again, it’s what that chemical does to your body that makes you want more so you can experience those effects again. Nicotine is the same.
LuigiBamba@reddit

AccountantOver4088@reddit
Well you seem to be misunderstanding the effects of the drug nicotine for starters. Nicotine is a nervous system stimulant its paradoxical relaxation effects. Meaning you get a buzz while simultaneously feeling relaxed.
Like a cup of coffee and .01mg of Xanax in a carcinogenic, terrible tasting and smelling, socially judged and combustible stick. Makes you feel cool of you happen to time travel to pre year 2000 or so as well.
Bobby-B00Bs@reddit
See I was well aware of the fact that it makes you look cool, which is why I tried it and haven't noticed any buzz or the like.
AccountantOver4088@reddit

PM is only exploding because they’re buying out all the tobacco free nicotine pouch companies and currently own Zyn. They’ve become extremely popular in the last 5 years to the point PM wants to phase out their tobacco products by 2030.

Because nicotine gives you a "high" of sorts.
Cobaltorigin@reddit
Because me smoking a cigarette was never, ever, EVER about you or your opinions.
HuskySkrr@reddit
Yes, it was always about MY need to kill myself.
Cobaltorigin@reddit
I have never had a person in my life ask me to quit out of concern for my health.
HuskySkrr@reddit
I did ask my mother to stop several times because I want her in my life, same as my best friend who is addicted, got crohn's disease, and still can't stop even when doctors told him it will make it worse and could die young. But also you sound like you have something stuck up your ass, so I'm not surprised no one really cared..
_who-the-fuck-knows_@reddit
It's nunya. What someone puts in their body is their choice. Enjoy the time you have.
HuskySkrr@reddit
But everybody that smokes tell me they would like to stop but are unable too. So their choice isn't even to smoke, it's a loss of control over yourself. And they get to enjoy less of their time because it just kills you sooner and makes your life worse. I was heavily addicted to weed, I knew these things but was unable to stop for years, even tho i wanted it so bad. If the guy wants to act cool about being ignorant to the problems he's willingly doing to his body, I'm sure he will find his people.
_who-the-fuck-knows_@reddit
Everybody has the ability to stop it's the willpower to actually do it. Everything in life is a choice and I'm not saying addiction isn't a hard thing to break but it's ultimately up to the person to break the cycle.

Pothead here, been trying to quit since about 1.5 years now and cigarettes kind of help. It shuts down the cravings I have for marijuana temporarily.

They’re upwards of $15-16 in my state for a pack. I enjoy a cig every once in awhile but at that price it’s just an enormous waste of money. You can buy nicotine pouches for $4-5 a pack here too which provide the same buzz.
MyDogIsDaBest@reddit
Cigarettes are old news, now you gotta vape. That's what the cool kids are doing.
For real though, the tobacco industry managing to pivot vapes and zyns was incredible. Amazing how they can make so much cash off stupid people

SierraDespair@reddit
It’s great until you build a tolerance and even your morning cig does absolutely nothing for you and you just end up doing it out of habit.
JohnTomorrow@reddit
And so on. And so on...

I don’t smoke but got addicted to Zyn at age 39. It’s a lot like caffeine but only lasts 45 minutes.

Perfect_Inevitable99@reddit
These days most young people smoking are probably doing so because vaping got to much to keep up with, which is exactly what the big tobacco companies wanted all along.
If you have never been stupid enough to acquire a nicotine addiction, then you will never know the enjoyable mental stimulation it delivers, and ergo never understand it...
A real chad would go out and get addicted to smoking and then quit, just to show he's bigger and smarter than the big tobacco companies, and then he will also be more relatable when he tells all his smoker friends they should quit for their health for the 100th time this week.
