What’s a good present for a mum of two under two?

Posted by That-Caterpillar-301@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 35 comments

Need ideas as a non parent for a present for a tired mum of 2 under 2! Budget is about £20. Hoping for a real treat for her but have no ideas! TIA.

Get her a nice bath bomb from Lush, go to her house, put Cocomelon on, sit with the kids and sing along with them to the brain-numbing nonsense, while she has a proper soak in peace. I’m not even joking, it is such a luxury having a proper bath if you have small kids.

Or you know, just play with them, like a normal person. cocomelon isn't good.

Maybe not Cocomelon as it has been found to quite literally rot their brains. Something like Miss Rachel instead. But otherwise a fantastic idea.

*The research is also mixed on whether or not these traits are truly harmful to kids. In 2011, researchers found that watching nine minutes of fast-paced programming could impair a child's executive function, which is the set of cognitive skills needed for* [*impulse control*](https://www.parents.com/ways-to-teach-children-impulse-control-1095035)*, planning and organization, task initiation, memory, and flexibility.**^(1)* *But then in 2015, the same researcher, Angeline Lillard, a developmental psychologist at the University of Virginia, conducted another study.**^(2)* *This time, the team concluded it was the "fantastical content" of shows, not their pace, that was an issue.* ***In both studies, the effects were short-term.*** \- [https://www.parents.com/news/some-think-cocomelon-is-too-stimulating-for-their-kids-we-asked-an-expert-to-weigh-insome-think-cocomelon-is-too-stimulating-for-their-kids-we-asked-an-expert-to-weigh-in/](https://www.parents.com/news/some-think-cocomelon-is-too-stimulating-for-their-kids-we-asked-an-expert-to-weigh-insome-think-cocomelon-is-too-stimulating-for-their-kids-we-asked-an-expert-to-weigh-in/) Pretty sure they‘ll be fine for the length of a bath. But yes, other shows do exist - in my day it was a saggy old cloth cat, a carved wooden bookend, some mice with an organ, a cloth doll and a toad, and they all sang some lovely folk music and told stories about embroidered owls. Probably explains a lot come to think about It.

Or even just a couple of hours so she can soak in a bathtub and have no one interrupt her!

I would hope the father can accommodate this, surely this isn’t a treat…
View on Reddit #57327924

wildOldcheesecake@reddit

So you just assumed the father was in the picture. Nice

pixie-goblin@reddit

Oh pipe down don’t be so offended. Obviously if there’s no father then no, but everyone commenting “let her have a couple hours peace” is also presuming there is no father. A couple hours peace isn’t a “treat”.

Is offence in the room with us?

I mean yeah you seemed to take a little offence when you thought I presumed there was a father. You seem tightly wound, but please do continue with the little snippy comments if it makes you feel better lol.

I've been married for >20 years and have kids. Yes, you'd hope that my husband could accommodate this - but OP is on a budget of £20. What is more important to me? TIME. Time is the best gift.

I had two under one, 11months apart. My friend turned up with a roast carvery dinner and desert, it was the best thing ever.

I had 2U2 and then 3U5: A really good flask that keeps tea/coffee hot. Or a nice water bottle that keeps water cold. Nice Chocolate - the sort of things kids wouldn’t like A voucher for somewhere the kids can’t go - like to get her nails done with you and then a coffee A magazine that can be dipped into rather than a book that you need to concentrate on. I like Red magazine for this. Nice shower stuff rather than bubble bath. A shower is a quick daily necessity whereas I may not always have time or energy for a full on bath. Posh/nice shower stuff makes each shower feel special. An offer to babysit one night once the kids are in bed so she and her other half can just go for a walk or a drink together. Nice hand cream/hand moisturiser. My hands are dry AF from all the nappies/wiping faces/hand washing. Ditto lip balm…. And anything nice snack wise. We eat a lot of kids snacks. Nice grown up treats for post bedtime indulgence with a cuppa is epic.

What’s her support system like? Does she have the kids grandparents or anyone close by who she feels comfortable letting watch the kids? If so, a voucher for a back massage is ideal! Carrying kids around is brutal on your back. If she feels comfortable having a couple hours away from the kids it’s a great present. If not, a really comfy pair of slippers is so nice. I have Ugg ones and they’re lovely. A fluffy dressing gown is great too (but more of a winter gift).

I mean it depends on her interests? A lot of mums feel like their personality just becomes mum as their life revolves around the kids, what are the things that she likes that aren’t necessarily “mum” things. But with a small budget I would recommend some fancy chocolates (not ones that would appeal to kids like a dairy milk) if you know she likes chocolate. Or some drinks that you think she’ll like, whether booze or some fancy flavoured teas or something like that if she doesn’t drink (might still be breastfeeding so no alcohol).

Bubble bath. Bottle of wine. Chocolate. Candle. Then offer to sit in the lounge once the kids are in bed so she can enjoy it in peace. Then bugger off quietly when she’s finished. Someone did that for me when I’d had a rough week with four small boys and husband was working away. It was bliss.
