Seems like a scam, has anyone else gotten one of these?
PainPaintsPaintings1@reddit
It’s a scam. Everyone here has replied to this 1 month ago, and there’s other comments who replied to other posts talking about this website about 2 months ago. Doesn’t sound odd to you how we all are receiving these messages around the same time? It’s bc we are on the same list. So I say again it’s a scam.
Live_the_chaos@reddit (OP)
Thanks. I had no clue.
EmmaLeesGD@reddit
It’s definitely a scam. I checked my EZ tag account and I have plenty of funds in there. Just ignore it.

What is I called NTTA and they confirmed the text
Courwes@reddit
Yes it’s a scam
robyculous_v2@reddit
And it’s also not Texas DMV, it’s DPS.
justonemom14@reddit
DPS issues driver licenses, but DMV still does vehicle registration. Despite this, you would think that they would at least mention NTTA.
kabob21@reddit
Your local county tax office handles vehicle registrations. There’s no such thing as a “DMV” in Texas.
ellieD@reddit
Yes there is. The Department of Motor Vehicles

Always look at the URL’s. Dead giveaway most of the time
lupin_bebop@reddit
Yes.
Red flags: - Texas doesn’t have a Department of Motor Vehicles. We have a Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Department of Transportation (DOT). - If TXDOT wants to contact you, they’ll send it in the mail to you. Trust me, they have your address. - You literally can’t have a vehicle’s registration suspended. - There’s no such thing as “temporary driving privileges being suspended” for 30 days. You either have a valid license, or you don’t. They can only suspend it if you are convicted in court for something like DUI. - What toll booth? You can’t transfer to one. We haven’t had toll booths in north Texas in….at least 4 presidencies, in my memory. - How are they going to prosecute you? Osmosis? The police would have to pick you up. Also, they don’t bother with toll stuff. - It’s always .gov at the end of a link. Period, dot. Not extra suffixes.

Yes. If you go to the DMV website they tell you that they have nothing to do with the Texas Toll Authority. I received the same text and called the NTTA customer service and they said it is a scam. The representative explained to me that the only company that might reach out via text is the collection agency and you can still handle it with NTTA directly.
MailFar629@reddit

Embarrassed_Wrap8421@reddit
Yep, I got something similar here in Connecticut, from the “Ministry of Transport.” One question: how are they going to transfer you to a tollbooth? That should be mighty interesting. Yes, this is a scam. If you really owed for a ticket, you’d hear about it in the mail, and even then I’d be skeptical.

Yes I get them all the time. I don’t even drive in the toll lanes
lantana98@reddit
Look up the number to the courthouse and find out if you do have an outstanding ticket to be sure.
Owl_Be_Seeing_You@reddit
Yes, it is. First of all, the DMV doesn’t have any authority over the toll system, that’s your local toll road authority. Second, if you look at the phone number the text came from, that will give you a clue. I’ve been getting these from various numbers starting with +63 - I looked them up and they are numbers based in the Philippines. I block each contact and then hit Report Junk underneath the text message.
CartoonistExisting30@reddit
Yep, I got a text from “the Massachusetts RMV”. I looked at the number the text was from , and the county code was for the Philippines.

It's a scam. Just look at the URL provided. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES DO YOU EVER AND I MEAN EVER REPLY TO SUCH MESSAGES! Jeez, one would think that a quarter of a decade into the the millennium and 20+ years since the advent of the World Wide Web and even longer after the general public was granted access to the Internet that people would know better NOT to reply to any suspect emails, texts or otherwise.
By the way, it is worth nothing however that if you have unpaid parking tickets or tolls then yes legal and monetary action can be taken against you by the state. Settle up.

I ask this because I literally just went to the court house for a ticket and got it deferred. So the timing is what got me. Thank you all for the info.
vinhluanluu@reddit
The timing is usually also part of the scam. They probably have access to the records and saw you just deferred a ticket.
SwiftKickRibTickler@reddit
I'd be interested to know: Do traffic tickets get posted somewhere publicly that scammers monitor for this type of info?
vinhluanluu@reddit
Personally after DOGE infected our entire federal network, I think it’s all been up for sale now.

Insurance databases have that info, and are easily and often hacked or people sell their credentials on the darkweb then pretend they were hacked. Happens frequently (my mom was an insurance agent).
justonemom14@reddit
Not sure about that. I don't have any tickets or legal things going on, and I've gotten this scam text at least 6 times. The money is always "due" the same day I get the text.

Crafty_Writing5899@reddit

TexaRican_x82@reddit
Yes. Look at your Texas Driver License. Look at the state agency who issued it. It’s not DMV. Most other states’ DMVs issue their licenses to operate motor vehicles and have powers of suspension. Our DPS does this and issues our Texas Driver License. That alone lets you know this text is horse shit.
tristand666@reddit
Texas created a DMV in 2009, but they would not handle traffic tickets.

Yes, never pay anything that anyone tells you you owe money on before first googling the official number of that entity and confirming that it is really them. This is standard call-back methodology that is used in financial industries to ensure that requests to send money are not fraudulent.
But beyond that, the link was clearly fraudulent (it would end in .gov if it was real, they tried to make it look like it does but it doesnt). Also, if anyone is telling you to "pay now" and really presses on the urgency of the situation, stating that there will be penalties if it is not immediately paid, it is normally a scam.
Scammers try to convince their victims that time is a critical factor so that the victim does not feel they have enough time to reach out for advice or to verify that it is legitimate, and will just pay them right there and then in fear of the made up consequences.
Tbh, you are honestly safer assuming everything is a scam. Whitelist things, dont blacklist them.

Also, they don’t bother with toll stuff. • It’s always .gov at the end of a link. Period, dot. No extra suffixes.
tristand666@reddit
On your first point:
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) was created by the state legislature in 2009 to enhance customer service, consumer protection and the success of motor vehicle-related industries. The department administers broad-ranging motor vehicle programs including vehicle registration and titling; vehicle dealer regulation; bus and carrier credentialing for intrastate and interstate commerce; oversize and overweight permit issuance; and grants to law enforcement agencies to reduce vehicle burglaries and thefts.
They still wouldn't handle traffic tickets though. The whole thing was just weird as if the courts aren't already involved when you get one.
therealradberry@reddit
It's a scam, but do you have an outstanding traffic ticket?
tristand666@reddit
Even if they did, I doubt the DMV would do anything about it.
tristand666@reddit
Obvious scam. I am pretty sure the DMV does not send text messages to collect debts. 2, the link doesnt even go to a .gov web site. A third obvious flaw here, this would all be handled by the courts, not the DMV since it mentions a "traffic ticket". The DMV doesn't handle traffic tickets, and the only issue you would get from them is to refuse to register your vehicle if you owed the state money under the scofflaw laws.
Mjpoole@reddit
Good rule of thumb if you think a message is a scam: look up the agency/company and call the number listed on the website. Might not work in all situations, but usually you can get someone to check if yhere is an actual problem or not.
Equal_Point_1216@reddit

SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
Yes, if you can look up the phone number that sends these messages, they're typically from the Philippines. Plus the DMV isn't the one managing traffic tickets, that would be the city or county where you were issued the citation.

YES.. . ABSOLUTELY IT'S A SCAM. DO NOT CLICK ON ANY EMBEDDED LINKS AND DO NOT GIVE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION..,don't even reply
Block and if you have the ability to REPORT the SMS as FRAUD / SCAM, for instance, if you have T-mobile as a carrier, you can simply FORWARD THE TEXT MESSAGE TO (T-mo official short code) 7726, which spells out the word SPAM on you telephone keypad.
Other carriers likely have a similar feature for reporting SPAM & SCAM SMS, so double check and report any time you can do so because it helps in real-time to train T-mobile's CALLER ID & SPAM FILTERING SERVICE which triggers their system to proactively WATCH FOR A FLOOD OF IDENTICAL SMS SENT TO MANY T-MO CELL SUBSCRIBERS SIMULTANEOUSLY OR IN RAPID SUCCESSION, thus blocking SMS from the number or BLACKLISTING repeat offenders to PREVENT less alert / cautious users FROM FALLING VICTIM to such scams!

Total scam, number starts with +63 which is the Philippines international code. Seems like I get one every week.
No-Discipline-5822@reddit
This is usually a dead giveaway (for now), coming from a number or random email address. Instead of a short code that I already have history with in my phone. Why would the bank or anyone suddenly text from a new random number if they text me from the same # for years.
No-Discipline-5822@reddit
Not one company has even sent me a message with the instructions being (Reply Y AND reopen this message, click the link, etc). That part alone would get me to "report junk"
If there is a reply Y or N it's typically bank charge related or sign up for texts
Reopen this message is never given
Click the link is never used but usually a blue link is there with no instructions outside of "or call"
---
Other items to note, the DMV does not impact credit or credit scores - they have the best threat of suspension of your license. Ticketing, driving on suspended license charges, court and jail. That will ruin your life enough. They messed up mentioning credit even if I knew nothing else about website structure.
The first message on https://www.txdmv.gov warns of this scam because the DMV is not the NTTA or Toll Authority (I can't remember the other one there).
bsharma127@reddit

SnooDonkeys9726@reddit
Yes random URLs like "Https//www djrjrhehywisosjeh4h" are typically not legit.
It's safe to say that Basically anything that gives you a link and demands payment is a scam. If you're ever unsure just call the place or go to the legit website from google (Do not use any information from the suspicious text or email to do so aside from the so called department name!!)
Also places like that are not likely to just text or email you out of nowhere. Most definitely the DMV, I think they still send carrier pigeons 🤣

Bradk20@reddit
I’m gonna say yes. Iv been in a bunch of “trouble” with the DMV and license suspensions/fines in the past and never revived a text. Most government agencies only contact via mail and sometimes email. You can always pop in a DMV and check if you’re worried about it, since it’s almost impossible to get call them. I have had luck calling a dmv before in the past by using the phone number listed by clicking on the dmv’s location on Apple Maps. And it was a DMV out in a small town, you can call any Texas dmv, it’s one huge system/database, doesn’t have to be your local office.
Fun_Bet5676@reddit

Illinois State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on May 28. Our records show that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket. In accordance with Illinois State Administrative Code 15C-16.003, if you do not complete payment by May 27, 2025, we will take the following actions:

Please pay immediately before enforcement to avoid license suspension and further legal disputes. (Reply Y and re-open this message to click the link, or copy it to your browser.)

Texas doesn't use DMV we have DPS
WalkAwayTall@reddit
Texas absolutely uses DMV. Not for tickets, but for car registration, title transfer, etc. it’s DMV. (Trust me: due to this whole cluster of a situation involving a car I sold never getting new plates and then apparently being abandoned somewhere, I have had to become very familiar with the various departments and DMV absolutely exists.)
hockenduke@reddit
100% fake. We don’t have a DMV…we have the Tx Dept of Public Safety and the Texas Dept of Transportation.
WalkAwayTall@reddit
It is. I got one too and I know I don’t have a traffic ticket.
Note the website: see how, while it contains “.gov”, there are also characters after it before the slash? That indicates that it’s not a .gov website. A link to a legitimate government site should either end in .gov or a slash needs to be directly after .gov before any other characters. (Also, to my knowledge this won’t work in a text, but in an email, make sure the link actually goes where it says it does. You can make a hyperlink say anything, so someone could format a link to say “txdmv.gov” while it actually goes somewhere else. If you’re on a computer, you can usually hover over the link to see where it goes; on an iPhone, if you hold your finger on the link for a couple of seconds, it should show the actual link without taking you there.)
Also, while notifications can get lost in the mail and such, a government organization usually gives way more time to pay a fee than two business days. “Transfer to a tollbooth” makes no sense, and they’ve lumped prosecution and your credit score into the same point, which also makes no sense (prosecution should not affect your credit score, nor should having an outstanding ticket).
Remember: scammers try to instill a sense of urgency so you’ll act without thinking, hence the short timeframe for payment and the extreme consequences they’ve presented here.
Also, if you ever aren’t sure, go to the organization demanding payment’s website yourself (don’t click on the link you’re sent; look the site up) and find a phone number for them. Call them and ask if you have any outstanding tickets. I’ve done something similar with my bank before when I wasn’t sure if a message supposedly from them was actually from them. That way, you know for sure that you have the right organization and they should be able to tell you if you own anything.

did you just buy a new-to-you car too? I've been getting a ton of car-related spam...people wanting to sell me an extended warranty and such
shuknjive@reddit
Yes, I get that notice and similar ones a few times a year. Government agencies, Fed, State or local won't e-mail or text threatening you or demanding you pay a past due bill, they send a letter, sometimes a certified or registered letter too! Scammers send out mass e-mails and texts in the hopes that one person falls for it.
shellbellgb@reddit
Also, doesn’t DFW call it DPS, not the DMV?
ZamazaCallista@reddit
We do have a DMV too. It's the DPS for Driver's License and ID cards, DMV for motor vehicle registration related services state wide not just DFW.

Does the Texas DMV send text messages? AI Overview No, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) does not send text messages requesting personal information. They will never directly reach out via email or text asking for sensitive information, and if you receive such a message, it is likely a scam.
TheWanderingMedic@reddit

This is a scam. Anytime you get an unsolicited notice like this, you can verify its authenticity or falseness by you directly going to the agency or business sending the notice- not using the link in the message- and validating it is also present in your account or records. In this case, the website for TX DMV is https://www.txdmv.gov/ and you can check the state of your driving record there (here: https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/dleligibility/login.do ). Don't ever click links or call phone numbers sent to you in unsolicited communications- not paper, email, text- always reach out to the agency or business through their main, public contact portals or numbers. When in doubt, go to the business or agency in person if possible.

Remember that URLs are resolved right to left. Read until you see the first period. Whatever is to the right is the Top Level Domain. Immediately to the left is the domain, then anything further to the left are sub domains of the same domain.
So, .win is the TDL, gov-kljv is the domain name. They try to throw in that txdmv to throw you. It’s only because they have a sub domain for every state.
