When someone tells me to use Discord for something.

Yeah, I'm all set with Discord.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Uzzaw21@reddit
I only use it because of the "kids"
HylanderUS@reddit
It is wild how many ways we've reinvented in the last 20 years to send each other messages.

Tell them your ICQ number, I bet you still remember it.

Striking-Access-236@reddit
How many ways we’ve invented to not have to talk to people in person…
Gutshot4570@reddit
I used Discord back when it was still Usenet...
Synthea1979@reddit
I hate discord. I cannot, for the life of me, follow any conversation. Replies don't make sense, nothing about it does. It's just chaos.
darxide23@reddit
Poorly setup Discord servers are like that. That's how Discord used to be a few years ago, but it's gotten a lot better. There are plenty of tools and customization options available now.
Hellament@reddit
Every discord channel I’ve participated in is essentially someone trying to get the functionality of a discussion forum, but for some reason through a group text chain with like 300 people on it. It reminds me of work emails that go out to an entire department, but everyone replies-all.
TouristPineapple6123@reddit
It's like IRC but if you're gone for too long it's just way too many messages and I have no patience to backread all of it
Oaken_beard@reddit
Minus the majority of the replies being “please remove me from this chain”
slypmpkn19@reddit
This is the perfect analogy.
bacillaryburden@reddit
Ugh I am so uncomfortable just reading this, sounds so stressful to try to parse
CoffeeHQ@reddit
This. I cannot for the life of me fathom why these younger people like using Discord for something where the correct format obviously would be a discussion forum… 🤷♂️
I may dislike Discord and be biased, but anyway I look at it… it’s still a fact that it’s just the wrong tool for the intended job. So unless I don’t understand they intend…
SufficientlyRested@reddit
Its intended purpose was talking to friends while gaming because the online games didn’t have voice chat. Then, these idiots decided to added chat chat. But we already have google voice, hangouts, icq, msmessenger, facebook messenger, and twitter by then. So they just made something that doesn’t really do anything well.
elementalguitars@reddit
I had to use it for support on a video game console mod I was doing. I thought it couldn’t possibly be that bad. I must have been missing something. It actually made me feel my first senior moment, like “This is it. I’ve reached the moment when technology begins to pass me by.” But no, it’s the platform that’s stupid, not me.
Matshelge@reddit
Platform wise, it's just a blown up messager system, or youth version of slack.
It's fine, if used correctly. But much like Slack or messager, people try to replace email, drive, and every other system that a professional outfit use for sharing information.
And for that, it is not great. But if you don't know better...
gesis@reddit
It's IRC for normies.
elementalguitars@reddit
Trying to get an answer to a very specific technical question in a live chat with dozens of other people all talking about different subjects simultaneously was one of the most obnoxious things I have ever experienced.
Matshelge@reddit
Sounds more like Slack, but everyone decides to tick "reply to channel as well"
BasvanS@reddit
Everything you said 10 hours/minutes/seconds ago is dated, old man! Get with the times!

KanedaSyndrome@reddit
Yeh they should just inject a forum into each channel and call it - that would work
Muffin_Appropriate@reddit
I’m 40. IRC chat rooms and AIM chat rooms were far more chaotic. I think this is kind of coping.
I don’t see how inline replies make things more confusing either as it provides context
Zealousideal_Golf101@reddit
45...I run a discord and i really enjoy it. I have dinner and TV sessions so people don't have to feel alone when they are eating/preparing dinner; random movie nights, fortnite game times, we share pet pics. It's lovely.
Appropriate-Bid8671@reddit
That just sounds...sad.
Zealousideal_Golf101@reddit
Probably because you have no imagination. For all of us, we're having a great time. It's an easy way to stay in touch and share. Not everyone enjoys crowds, loud restaurants and bars.
JohnnyLuchador@reddit
This, good on you. People don't get it. Watch parties, storage, and making connections outside your local neighborhood. People dont evolve, instead they doomscroll insta/tiktok/facepage etc instead of making friends. Then they shame and get upset that you know have friends overseas or resources that they dont and wont have. Yes, there are weirdos in some communities, but typically they get banned, and if its your own private server, you invite who you want.

I started with discord in 2016 helping with Twitch, now that was wild west. Currently I run several discord servers for big name Bands, im also part of one of the largest wrestling communities in the world as an admin via discord. It's really not hard and is just like mIRC, ICQ, Teamspeak, etc. I don't devote my days to it, i check in all the channels twice a day to make sure everyone is behaving or having fun or civilized discussions, might pop in to converse for a few min, then go about with my life being a dad/husband/ or work. My guess is people are in toxic communities without good moderation, or they just didnt roll with the evolution when it took off in 2016.
love_is_an_action@reddit
I truly cannot identify. mIRC and most other popular IRC clients were far less bewildering than discord when I tried it a few years back. I guess this is a “mileage may vary” situation, but I was surprised a bit by this comment.
shohei_heights@reddit
It's a fine enough replacement for IRC and other chat rooms. The problem is that they try to replace forums with it (especially support forums).

Oh WoW, that brings me back.
Particular_Toe734@reddit
I was just telling my kid how Discord has the look and feel of chat rooms from the mid 90’s when I had to dial up. I was never a mod, but as a user, it all feels the same and it’s ironic people like it even when there are things like Reddit where at least you can understand what replies go to whatever comments.
Miiirx@reddit
Yeah I very much like discord because it is a mIRc server on steroids!
Enigmatic_Observer@reddit
45 here and I cut my teeth on mIRC and I love discord
KanedaSyndrome@reddit
But the compare to anything recent and Discord is still garbage - not sure I get your point.
bgva@reddit
I hate that there’s so many damn extra steps. I’m one of those types who can’t stand to look at a notification dot or whatever, and Discord makes clearing notifications more work than it needs to be IMO. I’ve also tried turning off notifications, which doesn’t seem to do much.
Like the concept, hate the UI.
chubbuck35@reddit
Same!!
maximumtesticle@reddit
You're part of the problem. Cluttering threads with "SaMe!!" adds soothing. Just upvote please.
chubbuck35@reddit
Same!!
_AffectedEagle_@reddit
I hate discord too, it feels so inefficient and fragmented to me. I nope out after trying to use it for a few minutes, and then forget to follow anything in it, because it's just not user friendly.
Mudassar40@reddit
Chat rooms in general are chaotic for us now because we lack the rapudity to keep up.
They were as chaotic 25 years ago, but our brain was way more rapid.
maxdamage4@reddit
I was born in '83 and grew up in chat rooms on the early internet. I'm happy to see them come back in the form of Discord. Feels like home to me.
stamata_tomata@reddit
The brain plaques as I get older are slowing my my my head movies which makes my eyes rain
HuevosProfundos@reddit
This is also why I never joined twitter
SeaBearsFoam@reddit
Yeah, there's just way too much going on in there for me to follow. People have said "just mute stuff and turn off notifications." Okay. Now I'm not using it at all. I pop in to see what's been going on and there's so much activity I missed that I just nope out. I think it's just not for me.
KanedaSyndrome@reddit
Absolutely - the design is so bad for finding chats or having a thread or anything really - only works for voice
gingergal-n-dog@reddit
Sounds terrifying
Rhiannon1307@reddit
This is a matter of community and how it's organized though. Smaller, well-organized servers are super fun and comfy to be in. Larger servers are chaotic af, I'll give you that.
suckmyENTIREdick@reddit
Aye, indeed.
I hang out in one that just has a few friends in it. We vaguely try to keep it organized (sometimes, we even succeed at accomplishing real projects there!), but it's perfectly simple participate in.
But much larger ones, too, can be fine if they're structured well. Some I use deal with 3D printer firmware or cartography or whatever little niche and there might be a thousand people there or more, but they're easy to use for real-time discussion and problem solving.
There's plenty of discords that are chaotic and -- to my mind -- awful. But just because it can be awful doesn't mean that it can never work well.
Rhiannon1307@reddit
Yeah but then the super big ones, even when well organized, are still a mess to keep up with. I'm in a few I just visit for info purposes or when I'm having a specific issue (the Sims 4), and there are like a bazillion channels, and very strict and particular rules, and it's no fun to be in, in a community sense. It's really just good for quick info/help.
Smaller servers are great when, as you say, they don't moderate too much and just let conversations flow. I've been in smaller servers that were super strict about which topic can be discussed in which channel, and that kills a conversation very quickly. The server I ran (that died down because the main user base lost interest over time) was better in that way because I wasn't strict with any rules except spoilers. Anything else was just "Ah well, post it wherever you see fit". It was really great while it lasted.

bynaryum@reddit
I use Discord daily but then I work in game development so it’s pretty much a requirement.
AhfackPoE@reddit
Way better than dealing with ventrillo, trillion, msg boards and all that. I remember the before times we'll, but I've been using discord almost 10yr now, and the secret is just muting every server, disabling notifications, and just check what/when you feel like.
dodgesonhere@reddit
Yeah, I like Discord. It's not perfect, but it's great for group chats and video calls where people can hop in whenever.
calliemaggotbone_81@reddit
Ventrillo. Damn haven't thought about that one since my days running a WoW guild 15 years ago. Sigh.
D-Golden@reddit
I liked the Ventrillo days. We used it for Guild Wars. Just used to hang out and chat even when not in game.
calliemaggotbone_81@reddit
Same. We'd just be chilling in Stormwind or fishing or whatever.
zerocoolforschool@reddit
And Teamspeak.
VA1N@reddit
Hear me out...have you considered AIM?
AhfackPoE@reddit
door creaking
shohei_heights@reddit
Nah man. Message boards were and are better. You could actually search them properly and discussions were threaded.
If you just want a quick chat Discord is fine, otherwise it's hot garbage.
AhfackPoE@reddit
I still run a private msg board with ppl I've talked to for 20yr+. I get it. But Discord has taken the place of Vent for voice, Trillian/AIM/ICQ/IRC for text, and SOME msg board communication that's better suited for quicker mediums - like trading items in vidja games.
For example, when I started playing path of exile in 2013 and I found someone with an item I wanted in game, I posted on the forum. It might take a few days to a week+ to complete the trade - assuming they even respond to ppl on forums. Now that most ppl that PC game use Discord, it's much easier to keep it moving. That's just one example right off the top of my head.
shohei_heights@reddit
That type of thing is exactly what Discord (or IRC or Matrix) is good for. Those are all quick chat things.
The problem is that it's starting to replace support forums, mailing lists and other forums where long term retrievability is needed.
ethnicvegetable@reddit
Vent was awful ugh thank you for the memory
73-68-70-78-62-73-73@reddit
I have a strong dislike for Discord. I just want a chat platform. I don't care about literally any of the other capabilities. I'd prefer multi-client like Trillian or Adium, so I don't have to use Signal, WhatsApp, SMS/MMS/RCS, Google Chat, and now Discord.
loose_springsteen@reddit
Awww I loved Trillian
KietTheBun@reddit
This is the way.

I treat Discord like 7-up. Never have, never will.
xTugboatWilliex@reddit
7-up is good. Cherry 7-up is better.
DenialNode@reddit
Cherry 7 up was a fave growing up.
Cold_Associate2213@reddit
I, too, can't stand when there's a Discord for literally everything and half the time it's required to join it for access to a link or something for some app.
On the flip side, someone was asking for help about an incredibly niche tool I use with terrible documentation but a great Discord community, and when I said they should join the Discord for more help they basically started screaming at me. Just yikes.
webslingrrr@reddit
Discord actually kinda reminds me of the good ol days of talking to strangers in chat rooms and AIM.
Your mileage will vary by server. The younger the user base, the more unhinged and nonsensical it will be. Younger Gen Z humor is not something we will probably ever understand.
ThomYum@reddit
I run a Discord and hate it

i used to. Gave everyone a week notice it was getting deleted andbstill got complaints. They coulda taken the dam thing from me for all i cared.

I feel the same way! How weird that is.

I use discord but I cringe when I get a link to a fucking yt short or a tiktok. Piss off.
rylasorta@reddit
I use discord for everything. my spouse uses it, my friends use it, my kids use it. I have it on my phone and my desktop so if I'm ignoring one or the other I still get pinged. it's the most reliable way to get ahold of me.
some of you are much more on the X side of the Xennial equation than I am I guess.
ofTHEbattle@reddit
I only use discord for voice chat while gaming. My younger brother plays on PS5 and myself and our buddy play on Xbox so if we want to have a private party we have to use something like discord.
GustavSnapper@reddit
I run my own small (60ish) community and have been a senior admin in a very large (6000+) community.
I will take discord over every other platform. No ads for starters, I can run hilariously abusive emojis/stickers and gifs and the ability to stream anything on the fly makes problem solving and group watching things great.
It’s the superior platform to all social media platforms. There’s also no higher authority “admin” who moderates speech and topics based on their own agendas. Only whatever are the rules of each server you’re in.
Even with all the janky role weirdness.
Xdfghijujsw@reddit
Discord is baller. Be better guys.
I_make_switch_a_roos@reddit
i have no idea how it works
burnafter3ading@reddit
It's a series of tubes...
bikemandan@reddit
Should be pointed out also, not a dump truck
burnafter3ading@reddit
But, it's essentially a platform for peer2peer char or group chat within closed chat rooms for create, or semi-public spaces for basically every fandom that exists one Reddit and beyond.
I used it during Covid lockdown to game with my friends. These days, I like it for txt-based roleplay. Advantages include editing typos and sending images. All features described are free with a profile you make.
Weasel_Town@reddit
Like Slack, except worse.
cobalt-radiant@reddit
Hard disagree. Slack is so non-intuitive, and I have to create a new account for every slack I join, no thanks. Discord works well for its intended purpose, though not very well for anything else. Slack just sucks.
fschu_fosho@reddit
Yeah, I was invited to a Slack once. I recognised some similarities with Discord but could never get into it. Meanwhile, Discord is fine but only for my really niche communities. Got over the learning curve of using it but I wouldn’t know how to run or manage a server.
cobalt-radiant@reddit
I manage two small servers, one for my extended family (about 10-15 users), the other for my D&D group (6 users). What I like about it is I've created different channels for different purposes. In my D&D group, we have a channel for scheduling, another one for roleplay, one for off topic or funny stuff, etc.
Where I hate discord is when people use it when a website or a subreddit would better serve the intended purpose. I know of a discord server that is used as a reference point for documentation. Like really!? Why not use a website!?
lifeat24fps@reddit
If you were ever forced to use Slack at work and thought, “Oh my this is fun, what if all the worst and most anal retentive people who share my niche interests were here instead of my coworkers?” then you will LOVE Discord.
Eric848448@reddit
Google Chat was better than Slack before they rearranged it to be more like Slack.
thejourneythrough@reddit
This is so perfect. lol
melanthius@reddit
First you join a chat room then there's a bunch of fucking crazy ass shit going on.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
It's another communication platform that depends on a dedicated client (software) to access. So it's an even more walled garden than facebook et al. It allows group videochat, channels, file upload/transfer etc. So... neat, but when they drop the "we need to make money" hammer, a lot of people are going to lose content they can't retrieve. Not guaranteed, but I'd never trust it for long term storage.
But a lot of groups have gone to discord for communication and data archiving. Which is a mistake to anyone with any familiarity with why the internet and www were built to route around problems.
bynaryum@reddit
You serious, Clark?
One-Earth9294@reddit
Honestly I've come to like discord. It's got its problems but I'd call it the best current place for real-time chat.

ZM-W@reddit
I associate Discord with voice chat for online gaming and I can't wrap my head around using it like a message board.
nebcirc2619@reddit
I learned how to use Discord over the last few years as forums and groups have migrated to it. Last week I helped my Gen X co-worker join a discord group and it was so painful, like I don't love discord or am an expert but I was able to navigate and mess around with it. We really are the bridge between the analog and digital generations.
Morriganx3@reddit
I used Discord for a couple of things starting maybe six years ago, and I’ve seen a lot of forums either migrate or open one on the side. I don’t find it at all hard to use, though I’ve never tried to open or run one.
burnafter3ading@reddit
Yeah, this is basically how I feel. I'll join a forum, or add individuals I meet from Reddit to do direct chat. But I'd be lost creating even a small forum for a single shot RP.
Zealousideal_Golf101@reddit
I thought the same thing, but once I started one it got really easy. I have a few different chat channels and some voice/media share ones.
Plus, I'm in other people's discords. It's really nice for those of us that can get overstimulated in large gatherings. We body double, and the Fortnite gaming is hilarious and usually happens nightly.
But yeah, it can be intimidating to start one.

zorbacles@reddit
i reckon 30 years ago is spot on for when i first got on the internet
Unruly_Evil@reddit
I started with mIRC in 1997, before that I had my own BBS server xD.
zorbacles@reddit
I never had my own server.
I went to uni in 97 and worked out how to get ppp access from the dial up Unix pool
Unruly_Evil@reddit
Yes, me too. In 1997 I was already a Linux user. <3
zorbacles@reddit
Get the slirp executable and renamed it "prac10"
Unruly_Evil@reddit
I had to buy an external dial up modem for that to work XD
zorbacles@reddit
I always had external modem. Internals sucked.
14.4 then 33.6 then a 56
Unruly_Evil@reddit
Internal weren't real modems but I started with DOS 3.3 and then Windows 95... There were drivers there, but Linux didn't have drivers for internal back then...So I bought a external modem.
Do you remember the black box?
zorbacles@reddit
Black Box sounds familiar but not sure.
I started with windows 3.1 and trumpet winsock
My first it job was on an ISP help desk troubleshooting dial up connecting
AT&F&C1&D2&X3 was the init string that worked best for me.
Novel_Towel6125@reddit
You know what's crazy? There are more IRC users right now than there were at any time in the 1990s. (Barely, but still). The Internet has grown so much that what used to be like the biggest thing is now considered almost completely non-existent.

It’s useful enough. It does remind me of the message board era of the internet but I’m not going to use it as a default platform for someone. We’re all old enough to at least acknowledge it and find communities there but (at least personally) don’t expect me to be on it all the time

The only time I was on Discord is when someone used my email address as credentials. I took over the account, changed the password and deleted it. I try to do this every time someone uses my email address.
chypie2@reddit
I turn 40something tomorrow and I love discord. It took me awhile, but it's actually my favorite social media platform now. TBF Discord has improved for better and worse since the earlier days. I'm also into gaming so I don't know if that's the difference.
cobalt-radiant@reddit
I created one for my family, even got my dad on it. It's great because we have all sorts of roles, like "guys" and "girls" and "siblings" and "in-laws". I created different channels for different interest-based conversations, and other channels that are exclusive to the different roles.
chypie2@reddit
and I have to reply again I was thinking about my friends discord with their parents in it. They made emojis out of pictures of their faces and use them to react to stuff, lol.
cobalt-radiant@reddit
Oh that's a cool idea!
chypie2@reddit
just to up the fun in your discord, they make games now - you play them right in the channel! We like to play the fast click game. Love the idea of a family discord lol.
azazel-13@reddit
So, what do you do there? Are you in shared interest groups? And what does it offer that Reddit doesn't? I ask because I've been invited to discord from some of my hobby groups on Reddit, but I never really understood why these groups would extend to a different platform. For instance, the yoga sub has spawned some discord groups. And I'm not sure why.
cobalt-radiant@reddit
Reddit is a social news/post aggregation and discussion platform with a focus on public, thread-based discussions and content sharing through subreddits. Discord is a communication platform primarily used for real-time voice and text chat within servers or groups.
chypie2@reddit
mm that's a beautiful summary ty friend.
chypie2@reddit
There's discord groups for a lot of the subreddits now too. I am in some shared interests discords, gaming discords, friendship circles, and a few subreddit discords. I am not great at describing stuff but I'll try. Each Discord Server has voice and text channels. The text channels are usually organized by content type like this subreddit for example has a discord, I just joined to give an example: has text channels on the left that say general, tech, food, music, memes, books, gaming, shows-movies, pics-gifs-videos. There's more but that's just a sample.
So you would post your comment about something in there and you can discuss it in that channel with others. react with emojis/gifs. after 8 or so messages about it discord will prompt you to take it to a 'thread' much like here when comments run off into a conversation. to keep the main window clean. You can share videos, clips, files etc. You can stream some stuff in voice channels and people can watch you or your screen.
Every Discord is different as they are ran by whoever started it, some are fancy, some are barebones.
They have community or spotlight discords as well where you can join voice and listen to speakers on topics, seminars etc. Like some really cool stuff happens on discord, but I don't really do any of that so I can't speak much on it but I've checked it out.
hopefully someone else will come along with better info, lol.
Weasel_Town@reddit
Yeah, it seems like everyone who likes Discord is into gaming.
B4SSF4C3@reddit
Cause it’s easily the best voice chat and screen sharing platform, all in one.
Weasel_Town@reddit
That's great for gamers. I'm still not sure how it took over all kinds of groups that don't need voice chat or screen sharing, just messaging.
B4SSF4C3@reddit
Organizational tools.
Topics base channels, permission management per channel. This allows for granular information and comms within an overarching topic based discord server. So for example you may have one run by a mod release team, with a channel for say instructions, a channel for release notes, one for q&a, one for general chat of users, etc… Users can set channel based notification settings, so you only get pinged on the specific topics you actually care about.
That last bit is super nice for friend group discord servers. Rather than one single chat stream we have one for general banter, one for LFG game groups, event planning, music/tv show/book sharing, photos, etc… We even started to organize “events”, like Halloween movie marathon - one a day for a week around the holiday and a separated channel to either banter while watching or discuss afterwards. It’s our own little social media site that doesn’t get seen by the outside world.
Then you have ability to integrate additional/3rd party bots and functions within channels. This can be anything from a playlist request bot, allowing folks playing a game to drop a song request and the bot picking it up, adding it to the cue, and everyone in your voice channel enjoying the same tunes together. All the way to things like interactive AI “art” generation.
None of this is unique functions, for sure. It’s the fact that it’s all seamlessly integrated in a single platform that makes its sort of the perfect communications platform. Oh, and the fact that it works across and is available on all platforms.
Weasel_Town@reddit
I can see the utility for closed friend groups. I just hate how all kinds of information sharing that used to be publicly available is now hidden behind several layers of access controls, even though there's nothing private going on.
B4SSF4C3@reddit
Haha yeah, but the alternative is Reddit, with its free-for-alls, brigading, and stuff just getting by lost in the sheer volume of information, or relying on an algo to feed you want you want. Information overload has gotten so far that now need such info compartmentalization and organization tools to make it useful,
chypie2@reddit
it used to be mostly gamers but with covid discord kind of took off and I see them in more tech related stuff now.
Bored_Acolyte_44@reddit
What in the boomer thread is this? Discord is amazing.
jestercow@reddit
I’m so glad we all feel this way, I thought it was just me
_ism_@reddit
i'm one of the few who loves it and lives on it my age, it's lonely in there
Cashewkaas@reddit
People have looked at me as if im a weirdo if I tell them I don’t use discord. Im not even ashamed to say I don’t even really know what it is, some kind of mass-messaging service is all I know.
shohei_heights@reddit
It's IRC (or AOL chat room) with voice and video chat basically.
oflimiteduse@reddit
Discord was great early on for voice chat. It became a bloated, intrusive memory hog and I hate it but still use it occasionally.
Adorable-Raise-1720@reddit
I see all of these complaints but not any suggestions for an alternative... what is a better product for VoIP for hobbies and/or gaming?
shohei_heights@reddit
Matrix.
oflimiteduse@reddit
There isn't really. At least that I know of. I suppose zoom could be used but thats just as bloated.
LaFantasmita@reddit
There's an app I use that made a discord to support users better. I asked a question and they got all huffy and told me to ask ChatGPT.
DonkyShow@reddit
I have a Discord. I know there are groups exclusive to things I’m interested in that would be more active than Reddit. I still can’t bring myself to spend any time on there.
ManiacRichX@reddit
You should use it to complain about discord. i love its chaos.
honcho713@reddit
Discord is just a shittier AIM.
Smokeythemagickamodo@reddit
How in the living hell did this ever get popular. It’s ADHD to the max.
The setting doesn’t work properly and with all the clutter it still lacks basic features.
Emotional_Signal7883@reddit
Or the "watch this one hour YouTube video to learn how to make Minute Rice".
TickleWitch@reddit
I joined one once and the best way I can describe it is it must be what it's like to have multiple personality disorder but you can hear all the personalities at the same time and they all suck.
ADMotti@reddit
Counterpoint: our generation needs to continue to adapt to new technology so that we don’t become our parents, calling our kids to ask how to open/save/create a PDF again.
chiselplow@reddit
Can't call your kids if you don't have any. Problem solved.
Fappy_as_a_Clam@reddit
They wouldn't know how to do it anyway based on what I've seen.
jerseysbestdancers@reddit
I adapt to all sorts of new tech. Thats why i know discord is so poorly done.
Johnfohf@reddit
Nah, I'm tired of technology. Everything is/has only gotten worse and nothing indicates that will change.
I'm looking to unplug and live a simpler life. I'm definitely not jumping onto the next social media platform.
Sabbathius@reddit
OMG yes, I finally found my people! (in retrospect, rather obvious really)
I hate Discord with the burning intensity of a thousand suns. Mostly because so many game developers decided to abdicate their responsibilities. Why implement matchmaking, when you can just tell people to manually matchmake on Discord? Why implement clan support, when you can tell people to just manually join a Discord group? I utterly despise this stuff.
It also drives me crazy when they sell the games on Steam or wherever, but only communicate on Discord. No, you can f*** right off with that! If you sell on Steam, then you bloody well communicate on Steam too! If you love Discord so much, then go and manually sell your shit on Discord and stay off Steam.
EmergencyAbalone2393@reddit
Whenever I’m forced to use Discord I feel like I’ve been thrust upon the helm of an alien ship and I have to somehow decipher the alien symbols on all the buttons.
theo_sontag@reddit
I don’t even know how to sign up. Tried signing up and logging in multiple times and can’t for the life of me figure it out.
Eaglepursuit@reddit
Samll discord communities are great. Large discord communities are... discordant.
mtron32@reddit
All my friends are in a discord chat and it’s pretty much the group chat now.
blakealanm@reddit
I love Discord! As a video producer and entrepreneur I've connected with a lot of like-minded and very different artists both just starting out who I can teach and share my stories with and people who have been around the block.
I don't use it much for chatting, I mostly use it on my PC for the video chat rooms.
AHorseNamedPhil@reddit
I use Discord for gaming. Mainly to connect w/ friends for multiplayer stuff.
But as a general thing I miss proper internet forums.
Moon_Noodle@reddit
I loved Discord for a while, but the platform is absolute shit now, and there are no solid alternatives that will do what I want.
PersianCatLover419@reddit
No thanks.
Timotron@reddit
Fuck me this is accurate.
D1rtNASTY666@reddit
I feel this in my soul!!
cannadaddydoo@reddit
Im glad im not the only one lmao
CompletelyBedWasted@reddit
My husband is a streamer and I give this exact face whenever he asks if I've seen his discord....lol.
MaksimusFootball@reddit
As long as it keeps it our of facebook or twitter, im for it. Telegram on the other hand… no thank you
MisRandomness@reddit
I had to use one once for a class I was in. I was so confused! It was a total adhd clusterfuck. No wonder these youngins are so weird and scattered.
77slevin@reddit
Tell me about it. 53 here, so GenX, and doing an adult education course in Computer Repair and all communication needs to be on Discord....Yuk, I hate it, it really earns its name. And even for hobbies: It really sucks that all info posted on it is lost in time. A forum from before could be indexed by a search engine and provide answers years after its posting. Discord is just a vapid medium in comparison.
Verbull710@reddit
I hated it at first but now it's fine
blood_bones_hearts@reddit
I love it. Our family has a discord server rather than a group text message or anything like that. We use it to stay connected, game together, and for birthdays and celebrations. The kids can take part in the kid friendly areas and the adults can have their own less appropriate spaces lol! It works great for us.
LooseMoralSwurkey@reddit
I have tried to get my spouse's family to move over to Discord and a friendly hobby community over rather than getting 1,001 texts but alas, I can't convince them to stop texting. I'd rather be able to check it when I'm ready for the barrage rather than seeing I have 15 texts since I last checked.
blood_bones_hearts@reddit
Yes that's exactly it! Plus we have different channels for media recommendations, sharing pictures, funny stuff, artwork, etc...so everyone can post and not worry about deluging everyone with notifications because a lot of things are definitely "have a look when you can" type of stuff.
FinishingMyCoffee1@reddit
I was ok with it once it was explained that it's just new IRC
Lady_of_Tardis@reddit
Discord reminds me of Yahoo chat rooms from way back. Everything old is new again...
Parking-Iron6252@reddit
Are you more of a TeamSpeak guy
____cire4____@reddit
I gave up on discords a while ago for the same reason I gave up on message boards - there's always one or two 'loudest voices in the room' who are just obnoxious posters trying to get a rise out of people.
CalgaryChris77@reddit
Nah, reminds me of the old days of IRC.
cacecil1@reddit
oh come on. Discord is immensely useful and fun.
maxdamage4@reddit
Totally agree. Discord is how I socialize most often with my real life friends between meetups, and it's where my hobby communities are. I love it.
MCA2142@reddit
I agree, I love using discord to stay in touch with friends. I think complaining about discord of all things is such a boomer attitude.
ouijahead@reddit
Sometimes things just don’t click .
ClimtEastwood@reddit
Agreed
waveothousandhammers@reddit
I have it, am on some servers, but I just can't get into it. It's like being at a party where you don't know anyone. Which is crazy cause I used to have a mIRc window open all the time for forum games and such. But I don't have any social/group games going right now.
I feel like I don't have enough time/mental energy to just sit at the computer for hours chatting with randos. If I am at the computer I am usually trying to focus on something. I have the app on the phone, too, but it gets about the same amount of use.
If I had a friend group there I'd probably use it a lot more. Getting old is lonely.
ouijahead@reddit
That’s the face I made when I learned that people willingly let someone know their location at anytime by using Snapchat. Some people just don’t have a survival instinct. I will say one thing. I do kinda like ChatGPT . I was able to be able to speak to someone in Spanish for the first time last night. It really helped a lot . Not that weird robotic Spanish from Google .
thaRUFUS@reddit
I like small personal dischord channels. But Every big one sucks. Every single damn one.
EternalSunshineClem@reddit
I thought it was really fun but I was using it too often and got off it. Now if only I could do the same thing with Reddit.
spderweb@reddit
Discord is great. As an extension of video gaming. That's about it. My friends all use it to send movie trailers, videogame deals, and voice chat with each other while playing. Oh, sharing screen too.
I'm less a fan of joining groups for products.
Available-Crow-3442@reddit
Guys, we grew up with chat rooms and online forums. It’s just that.
heybuditsok@reddit
Ok good, it’s not just me
Shinavast42@reddit
Weird. Discord is the only social media i actually like and use. I was big into game forums back in the day and its reminiscent of that so maybe thats why.
B4SSF4C3@reddit
Couldn’t be me, on a private server with all my friends, gaming, chatting, sharing music/book/tv recommendations, etc…
It’s like a group chat, except with topic subdivision so you can keep in touch while selectively muting notifications you may not care about. It’s great.
cathode-raygun@reddit
I tried it, just couldn't deal with it.
OopsAllErrors7@reddit
I love discord:)
vhs1138@reddit
I have discord and still do not indent people want to be on it.
MakesMeSickMick@reddit
It's basically AIM but more
dishwasher_mayhem@reddit
Wow I'm almost 50 and I use Discord daily. Compared to the shit that came before it, Discord is amazing.
CloakerJosh@reddit
To be honest, I just view it as a modern mIRC with TeamSpeak/Ventrillo built in. Pretty slick from that perspective.
Fair_Blood3176@reddit
Discord = warfare, contention, strife, disonnance, hostility
dair_spb@reddit
..., acceptance
Esternaefil@reddit
So what you're saying is that we need a server for this subreddit, yeah?
snowaurora@reddit
I only use Discord.
Haemwich@reddit
Private discord servers between friends are great. Public discord servers with thousands of members, nah son.
thorsbeardexpress@reddit
I love Discord, way better than group chats. We have all our activities groups in it so everyone knows everything all the time.
sarahstanley@reddit
I use it for voice chat with my kids when playing games.
Electronic-Pipe-9182@reddit
Honestly, discord is just a combination of a bbm board and a chat room
goodfriend_tom@reddit
I remember using chat rooms when I was younger to talk to people in America about bands I liked. It was perfect, and it was easy. 30 years later, we have discord... how far we've come.
VVrayth@reddit
I use Discord almost entirely for direct messages, very little server participation. It works great that way.
CausalSin@reddit
I only have a real problem with it when people try to use it for documentation. OpenSource projects have gotten especially bad about it.
JamesMattDillon@reddit
Tried it, but it's not for me
zorbacles@reddit
i have a discord. its just me and one other dude. we use it to chat while we play single player games on different consoles. eg at the moment we are both working through lego jurassic world.
Ok_Psychology_7072@reddit
Haha same.
Star_Tool@reddit
Its used by gamers because its a very stable voice chat platform that also lets you customize your own server with 3rd party resources you would normally have to travel to each individual website to find. And with the addition of automation bots its even better then going to the original sites most of the time.
AbbreviationsBorn276@reddit
I really miss irc. I tried discord and it is a no for me.
thatotherguy57@reddit
I use Discord for online gaming. I seldom use post anything in it, and hate the quality of the audio. When it works, it's fine, but it tends to be laggy, which makes coordinating during a session unpleasant at best.
austinbarrow@reddit
That’s North OC but South of the Mason Dixon.
Cross_22@reddit
I'll take mIRC, thankyouverymuch.
Coakis@reddit
It aint perfect but Its the least objectionable means of talking with people you know. Better than Facebook messenger or anything that godawful company puts out.
MihalysRevenge@reddit
The only thing i use discord for is keeping in touch with my best friend its a safe easy to access from anywhere with Internet link but thats all I use it for
malaclypse@reddit
I loved Robert Anton Wilson’s works (obvs) so wanted to like Discord just because of the name. But I spent my days as youth on mIRC and spend my days as an adult on Slack. Group text message my close friends. I’m sick of typing out conversations.
trustme1maDR@reddit
This made me LOL. I got involved with a volunteer group a few years ago, and it was organized by a bunch of young whippersnappers who made me get on discord to communicate. I hate it!
VincentMac1984@reddit
I’m still not a discord user…. I also don’t have instagram, Truth, I erased the platform formally known as Twitter, never did tic-toc (military they said no so… whatever) I still have Facebook (which I’d like to get rid of but need it for family emergencies with folks getting older, and marketplace is pretty good) and Reddit that’s it. And life is better for it.
Weasel_Town@reddit
I hate how many things that used to be searchable on the web are now hidden inside a Discord. So you have to find the server link for the topic at hand and do the secret handshake to acknowledge the rules and stuff just to be allowed to search for your question. Also the search sucks. All the money and effort Google has put into optimizing search can't help you anymore, because it's all hidden away in Discord servers.
VinceAmonte@reddit
I like discord lol
tmac960@reddit
I dont even understand how to use it. I've tried
ChokeOnDeezNutz69@reddit
I definitely don’t get it. I’ve used it. It’s cumbersome. And it doesn’t seem to really do anything that you can’t do with a billion other group message tools.
Surfer_Sandman@reddit
Discord is the best chat app
Wak3upHicks@reddit
I've been on Discord since 2016 and it's about the only socializing I get
martapap@reddit
This is how I felt a couple of years ago. Now I belong to like 20 something discords.
