How long should someone stay with a company that doesn’t repair their trucks quickly, but they’re stuck in that cycle of needing more experience because nobody else will hire them and having to work from a smaller company that doesn’t want to take a truck off the road for repairs it needs?
Sometimes, you have no choice but to involve DOT. Let them know you've been trying to get it fixed, but the company won't comply. When they try to blame you for driving anyway, tell them you have to make a paycheck just like they do. Ask them to write it up to the company, and make them have to pay the fine to force compliance.
Great reply, thank you so much. I’m honestly very stressed out about this when all I want to do is work and be proud of the work I do. I have a little book that I write everything down in, when i saw first saw, who I told, etc.
I'm in the process of escaping that cycle.
I originally wanted to get my full 2 years at my local job I started but things have only gotten worse over the last six months.
God willing I start my new job in two weeks after 23 months at my first local gig.
Do your best to protect yourself and your CDL.
I guess it’s a more common problem than I originally thought. I would refuse to work if the truck’s brakes were screwed, or anything dangerous was faulty. But you can still be dinged for minor repairs that should be working properly as a driver as far as I know. It’s very frustrating and stressful. Wheel hub started leaking and the owner was like “let’s keep an eye on it” and I’m like, it’s clearly leaking and self explanatory. What is there to be watching for? It’s already apparent what is wrong.
Im not the person to ask that. Was OO for 10 of my year, so I've done my own repair for long time. I can rant about how the policies of the last 10 years are killing OOs, but only my brothers on the CB will ever really lnow
Im currently in trade school for construction and I can’t seem find any places that’s actively hiring I’m thinking of applying to a company that will provide cdl training would you recommend it or should I wait till things stabilize?
Its like waiting for house prices to come down. Its a gamble. Trucking is shit, and shit, and shut, and then it great, and then it's shit. I've wanted to go back to construction before. Its a blue collar job, wherever u end up in can't say it's better than the other. In construction you'll be home more, money-wise it's probably onset par, not sure.
This was my question. He’d have a lot of time for reflection and solitude to speak with God. I would hope the answer was yes. Jesus is The Way, The Truth and The Life.
You say you’re deep and philosophical, so let me throw something at you.
Ever really think about the human eye? It’s got over two million parts working together, rods, cones, muscles, nerves, all syncing up so you can see color, depth, and motion instantly. One thing goes wrong, and it all falls apart. That’s not some accident. That’s design. Nature doesn’t build systems like that by trial and error. Chaos doesn’t create precision. Intelligence does.
And if nothing matters, why do you care about truth or purpose at all? Why does beauty hit you in the chest sometimes, or injustice make your blood boil, if we’re just animals with a bit more brainpower? That hunger for meaning…where’s that coming from?
I’m not trying to preach to you. It’s my job as a Christian to spread the word of God. I’m not an idiot that doesn’t understand science and reason though. I’m just saying, if there really wasn’t anything out there, none of this would matter. But it does. And maybe deep down, you already know that.
Bonus point: Wernher von Braun(Aerospace Engineer) was a man of faith. The more he researched space, the more his faith grew. On his tombstone, he chose Psalm 19:1:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
I've read Behe. Convincing argument. Its a wave in an ocean of evidence that points the other way.
I dont care about about purpose, im an absurdist, amd I only care for truth because I want to know it. Thats how I know Christianity isn't true.
A quote by an engineer about a god won't convince me. Did you know EINSTEIN believed in a God.?.. but did you know it wasn't the God you believe in?...
Fair. But I noticed you read what I said and still didn’t answer the actual question.
You say you’re an absurdist who doesn’t care about purpose, just truth. But what’s the point of truth in a meaningless universe? If life has no real value or direction, why bother chasing truth at all? That’s not just logic. That’s a desire for more. Whether you admit it or not, you’re still searching for something more.
You shrugged off Behe and von Braun, cool. And sure, Einstein didn’t believe in the personal God I do, but even he couldn’t look at the universe without seeing order and intelligence behind it. I’m not trying to use quotes to win an argument. I’m pointing out that some of the most brilliant minds still sense that something bigger is out there.
You say Christianity isn’t true. That’s a big claim. But so far, you haven’t explained where reason, morality, consciousness, or even your own desire for truth comes from in your worldview. Saying “it just is” doesn’t cut it. Random atoms don’t create minds that ask these questions.
You spend a lot of time thinking about who you are. Why? If there’s no meaning, why care? Why even hope for a version of yourself that ‘fits’? That doesn’t sound absurd.
In a meaningless universe we are left to make our own values. Values differ person to person, culture to culture, religion to religion. One of the values I value most is truth. There is no purpose behind it besides the value I give it.
My worldview comes from my experience. In my POV, through my eyes, living what I lived, you'd agree. Since you haven't, I encourage you to do you and I salute you on your endeavor.
You talk like you’ve been through hell and think that disqualifies God. I understand that. But don’t assume I believe because I’ve never struggled. You don’t know my story. I’m doing well now, but things didn’t start off that way.
I’ve been raped AND gang raped as a child/teen. Held against my will for three months after running away from abusive parents. I’ve seen death and have been close to it. I didn’t start school until 7th grade because I wasn’t allowed to go. I grew up in chaos. I spent most of my life in foster care, separated from family, and figuring life out without the kind of support most people take for granted.
When I finally did get into school, I had to work harder than anyone just to catch up. I read constantly, that’s how I started making honor roll. Not because it was easy, but because I refused to stay behind. I put in the effort. And I’ve carried that mindset with me ever since.
I’ve been through things that could’ve left me bitter, numb, or angry at the world. And for a while, I was. I searched everywhere, tarot, astrology, different belief systems, trying to find something that made sense of all the chaos. But none of it held together. None of it answered the deeper questions: Why do we care about truth, or justice, or meaning, if none of it matters? Why do we even long for something bigger?
That’s where logic kicked in for me. Because randomness doesn’t create order. Mindless chance doesn’t explain design. My life has been messy, but the world itself isn’t. The structure of DNA. The precision of gravity. The complexity of the human eye. The very fact that we’re even able to debate this stuff says we’re more than just atoms bumping into each other. We have purpose.
My belief in God isn’t a result of trauma(killing that now). It’s the result of questioning, thinking, searching, and not being satisfied with shallow answers. Even now, my faith isn’t about emotional comfort. It’s about truth. I believe in God because I genuinely think it’s the most reasonable explanation for what exists, out there and in here. I’ve seen enough to know He doesn’t usually shout. He nudges. He gives just enough for those who are open. But if you shut Him out completely, don’t act surprised when He doesn’t kick the door down. That’s not how real love works.
And one more thing: God has nothing to prove. We’re not the judge, and He’s not on trial. We matter to Him, yeah, but to demand He show up like He owes us a performance? That’s not humility, that’s pride. And pride’s a terrible lens to search through. Just being real. You don’t have to take my word for any of this. I just hope, one day, when you’re ready, Jesus shows Himself to you in a way that logic and your heart can both recognize.
Look i can sympathize with a good story more than most people, but how do you know Jesus is real?
Not even asking for God to prove himself. Just asking you, how do you know Jesus is real? Lay it out to me.
Why don’t you just ask him yourself if He is real? He will tell you himself if you really want to know. People that know Jesus is real know because God tells them so. I know it’s really difficult to grasp, and to secular folks we sound bat shut crazy… but that’s how it really works. I would not of ever believed it either, until I asked Him to come into my head, my heart, and my life…and then He did. Trying to prove God is real is next to impossible, until you find out for yourself…so ask Him yourself if He is real.
Matthew 7:7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
So ask Him…
Honestly I have had those a few times. And Prep H is a life saver. Sticking your legs up and inserting that thin yellow knob into ur asshole to heal the pain is not at the top of best life experiences
Im cynical of that. When I see autonomous robots unload pallets or undo car straps I'll buy into it. I give it at least 20 years.
Also, the way I saw Tesla present it, like "truck trains" hahahaha they'll have to redesign highways for that
If you believe in people like Socrates, Homer, or certain Caesars, then there’s no reason to doubt Jesus existed. He’s more historically documented than any of them. That’s just fact.
Why do I believe He’s God? Because He fulfilled over 300 prophecies written long before He was born. Because over 500 eyewitnesses saw Him after He rose from the dead. And because His followers were willing to be tortured and killed for what they saw. People don’t die for something they know they made up.
Personally, I’ve felt Him move in my life. Too many moments that lined up too perfectly when I prayed or asked for a sign. I’ve walked away from dangerous situations untouched, only to be met by a verse or a stranger saying exactly what I needed to hear. That’s not random.
You can see God all over this world. The Bible was written thousands of years ago, and yet it still lines up with stuff we’ve only recently confirmed. Like how it told people to isolate the sick, wash their hands, and avoid contaminated items, way before we even understood germs. How would ancient people know that? And it goes deeper, like how babies were circumcised on the 8th day, and now science says that’s when blood clotting is at its strongest. Or how it described the earth as a circle, and said it hung on nothing, long before people understood space. Stuff like that just stacks up.
The Bible isn’t a science book, but every time it talks about real-world things, it hits. It’s too detailed, too consistent, and too far ahead of its time to be just chance.
I believe the because truth, history, logic, and my own experience all point the same way. God is real. Jesus is real. And I’m good with standing on that.
Cool if you’re done talking about it, but I do want to point out, you never actually answered the questions I asked. You read them, and that’s fine, but brushing it off doesn’t make them go away.
I didn’t share any of this to argue. You asked, and I gave you an honest answer from my heart, backed by history, logic, and my own personal experiences. I wish you well. ❤️✝️
The part of your personal experience was the best part. The part from McDowell or Strobel or Cold Case Christianity, whichever it was, was tired. Thats been so played it out its like Comfort telling me about a banana in the shape of a hand again. I just cant do it man. And for any of your questions you have received an answer. Its a meaningless. Refer to Ecclesiastes for more answers
You’re tired of the same old names, Strobel, McDowell, Cold Case. And yeah, the banana thing? That was wild. Especially when it turned out the banana wasn’t even natural. Human-modified, totally undercut the whole point. But that’s not what I’m leaning on anyway.
The stuff I brought up came from actual research. Science, evidence, logic. Not just feel-good soundbites. If you don’t like it, cool. But calling it played out doesn’t make it false.
And Ecclesiastes? It’s not this nihilistic mic drop people like to make it into. That whole “meaningless” vibe? It’s coming from someone who’s been chasing life without God. It’s not the answer, it’s the spiral(that you’re in and why you relate). And the book doesn’t end there. It talks about Sheol, the grave, where all that chasing leads. Then it turns the corner: Fear God. Keep His commands. That’s the point.
Feels like instead of actually sitting with the questions, you keep circling the messengers. Picking at tone, style, delivery, whatever keeps you from having to deal with the actual weight of the thing.
And if none of this mattered to you, you wouldn’t still be replying. That part’s obvious.
Anyway. I’m good. Hope your night’s alright.❤️✝️
Just curious…why you think I used ChatGPT for my response? I’m not the one active in the AI community, you are. One of your top communities. You seem a little upset, though, so I’ll let you be. Stop letting it shape your view. If you are using it(the refrigerator comment is obvious). Have a good one.
How often are you home doing car hauling and what’s the benefits like? There’s a decent bit of companies that have good pay and equipment that I’ve looked at but they seem skimpy on benefits. I do driveaway (piggybacked/decked trucks), but I don’t mind sleeping in the truck if they have sleepers.
Lol if it was sketchy, probably wouldn't have pulled it.
Actually, once, this was like 2015, I picked up a Ferrari in TX and the next day the DEA called me and asked if i had a Ferrari in my trailer. I said yeah, and they said they need it and I need to bring it back. I thought I was being scammed somehow, so I started making calls to disoatch, and 50 calls later we figured out it was actually the DEA and they agreed I could drop it along my way in a site in NM.
Did not get paid for that one to this day.
Brutal, sorry you didn’t get paid for that one. There’s some super sketchy stuff going on with the Ferrari, the least they could’ve gave you was a story lol
There was a story. At least a part of one. Some hours after I picked up the car from a condo, the owner was arrested for drug smuggling. The car became evidence and it was on my trailer. Thats the part of the story I know. After I dropped it off there's a story I know nothing about.
Just turned in the company truck Wednesday after car hauling OTR for the last year and a half. Have you looked into local car hauling? I live in Chicago and know several guys that use their own trucks and haul for URS and are home every night. I think they make like 85%
In the south there are so many bad Pilots. All over SC amd GA. But Id say the one in FL that has no parking and is a one way exit through the pumps for all trucks
I'm planning on getting a CDL with doubles and manual transmission. I have a problem with driver facing cameras. Which company would you recommend for my first year otr?
First year, just any mega and keep the job. If you have anyone you know in the industry, maybe have them refer you. I dont know anything about the mega's. But... but, if you can start specializing out of CDL school do that. My BIL got hired for flatbed and oversize right out of school and that ended up paying off 4 years later
It does go away... but... you ever seen those Purple pillows at truckstops? Don't buy it at a truckstop but order one from Amazon because you'll save money. Buy the biggest one and use it. Helped me so much with back issues. Don't know the physics of it but I will swear by it.
LTL my good man. Check around with the ones local to you. You can do city deliveries and pickups and make 100k a year or nightly scheduled linehaul runs and make more.
I have a real question, i have to do a road test probably with a 53 footer. My only truck experience is pulling doubles am i overthinking this? I have 3 yrs exp but i do know you have to go large marge with a 53
4 lanes. If youre starting from the rightmost lane u need 3 lanes to take the turn. Starting from the second to right, you need 2 lanes to take the turn. Don't know if it's the same with doubles.
With the left its easy because you have lots of lanes.
Watch the tandems. If they're behind the thing you are trying to clear, you won't clear it. Its a quick explanation and I hope it makes sense, but if not, ask, and I will try to explain it better.
Im certified for doubles/triples but have never pulled them
So am I. Only did OTR for a year and a half. Have spent the last 11 years exclusively local. Doesn’t seem like it’s been that long does it? Are you glad the manual restriction wasn’t a thing yet when we started? I am, because I was terrified and would have jumped on that.
I have spent that time OTR. I actually got my first auto 3 weeks ago for the first time and it's okay except for the damn safety system that slams the brakes at bridges. I wish I had my 13 speed again
Actually, one time on i10 getting close to San Antonio i saw a wheel coming the freeway at me, way down the road, so I started braking to avoid it and went left and the tire went left, so I slowed down even more and went right, amd the tire went, so I tricked it, I slowed down even more and swerved left amd passed it and there's no punch line
Separate and come off? I've been through quite a few tire explosions, but I've never lost a wheel. God forbid.
I've a had a trailer fall of my truck before. I was moving 15 mph on the road and it just dropped off. Happened that a cop was behind me and a driver from my company pulled up beside and helped me do the crank of shame recconent. No one was injured, besides my pride
Dang, I thought you were one of those container haulers on I 45 that blows past me doing 90 then 10 minutes later I pass the same guy doing 45 for some reason
Personally I prefer to do 60 in the right lane until the truck behind me catches up, then I go up to 70 so they can't pass, amd then when they pull in behind me I drop back to 60
I started in a mega and did my 6 months and moved on. My BIL started in a trucking school amd got hired out of there by a recruiter and did oversize his first 6 months before moving on. I dont think there's a wrong way. Just be vigilant and dont fuck anything major up.
How the heck did you find your first job? I graduated back in February and have been looking ever since the opportunity to work with the company that owned the CDL school I went to fell through. I've been trying for three months now and I'm starting to lose my mind.
I dont think there's a Flextape answer for trucking. People come to trucking to make a living thats better than the living they can make without it. The market pushes them toward it because its better than what they can make without it. If there were less people trucking, it would be better for the truckers because wages would be better, but that's not possible. I honestly can't think of a market solution for issue.
Real truckers are from 2000s and older I don’t trust no driver that hasn’t been trucking passed the 2000s my boss and the owner have been trucking since the 80s lol if anyone started trucking in 2010 you not a real trucker lol I’m born in 1992 too
No. I wouldn't. Van market is dead. But... would it be worth it to get a CDL for the future and to let it age? Maybe. I guess it's depends on what your prospects without a CDL are.
TTT in Tuscon used to be better, but otherwise not really. I dont hang out in them.I dont understand the people watching movies in trucker rooms when you have YouTube on a phone.
You come to a fork in the road. To left is your delivery destination. To the right is a 1 hour special for all you can eat rollers for $1. No matter which way you go it will take 12 hours to return. Which way do you choose.
I mean this is actually a good question. Like anyone else would say a phone charger or something like that, but for real, down the basics, it's clothes/bathroom/food. Things that cover those
Every once in while you can take yourself to a decent restaurant on the road amd just sit and unwind, and that's the best place.
Also, there was this saloon that looked like a red barn in Iowa that had a footwide burger (a single patty under 4 buns) and the place was a restaurant during the day and a saloon at night and that place had the best burgerI ever had. Probably been closed like 10 years now.
Do you have plans to settle down and drive in one area, so that you can be home more often? I've considered driving semis, but my end goal is to own a home.
I hit a car once because I didn't see it in the hood mirror when it pulled up next to me and I wasn't paying attention. My only accident.
Most memorable? One time there was a storm in NM and after it passed I came down to a TA and the truck stop had come to a stand still because all the trucks couldn't make it up a 10 foot hill, so I ended up chaining 8 trucks by myself to help them and clear the row
I haven’t done a CDL A job since November 2023. I got an offer to do something else for a year and then went traveling abroad. Now I’m back looking for CDL work, kinda worried I won’t be accepted for any CDL jobs because of my gap despite 3 years of experience in total.
