Are there any issues with living near a golf course in the UK?

We are house hunting and it seems like a lot of the houses we like are near golf courses. This may be because we are looking in a lot of small country towns or large villages.
I’d not given this a thought till there were some recents headlines about a possible (not proven) higher incidence of Parkinsons in those living near golf courses, then google threw up a whole host of toxicity problems with the pesticides or herbicides used to maintain the courses, linking them to cancers and various other health issues. Also suggesting that children would be particularly vulnerable.
It seems that the pesticides can affect nearby homes either by air, by connected lakes/streams, or by the water supply if that underlies the course.
I don’t know whether this is partly because in the US much stronger pesticides are permitted that wouldn’t be a problem here, and that is skewing the results of online searches.
Anyone know if there is cause for concern? Very grateful for any advice!

Are you sure you significant other isn't just a golf but?
JuniperMoonSparkle@reddit
I am not laughing that at all. Unfortunately in the UK golf courses are everywhere. We live in a small town and there are 4 big golf courses in this town. We can't move away because of the kids' schools, but there is no escape from those fields. We are still looking to move somewhere at least the house is 2 miles away. It seems very difficult.

Or obsessed with holes one way or another.

Well he has kept it well hidden 😂 or maybe he is planning to become one!

I've lived within 300m of Robin Hood Golf Club in Solihull for 34 years, but it's become a big problem in the last five or so. They have a large, tractor-towed leaf blower that howls at around 250hz. This is an intrusive noise that seems to get past many forms of deadening - including in-ear plugs, it even resonates large panes of glass. Think of your neighbour vacuuming their car under your bedroom window.
The big issue is that the club is happy to start this from 5am, and it howls for hours. Clearly they are starting early to avoid interrupting afternoon golf players - but to the detriment of the community at large. Complaints, including those via the local council, have simply elicited claims that they only start at 6am (like that's acceptable too, given the nature of this particular machine) or blaming a nearby school for grass-cutting (what, every day in Autumn??).
The bottom line? Are you moving to a home with a golf club next door? Think of the noise from constant grounds maintenance. You may be impacted more than you'd expect, and it's like long term water torture.

Far more people live near agricultural land which would be more likely to cause these kinds of problems if use of agrochemicals is the cause? I don't think this is causation even if there's a correlation.
I live right next to a golf course and the biggest problem I've had is the occasional golf ball in my garden. Which, given the layout of the course, means golfers would have to be wildly off target. But maybe they have Parkinson's.
These_Thing7371@reddit
But your foil hat back on lol
em_press@reddit
Could it be that the higher rates of parkinsons are commensurate with the increased age of people living near golf courses? Because they can afford it, or because retired people have more time to indulge in golf?
i-am-the-duck@reddit
The study accounted for age
ProtoplanetaryNebula@reddit
Lawn bowls is the deadliest sport in the UK. Most players end up dead within 15 years! Very sad
ladinga101@reddit (OP)
I can’t quite remember if that was taken into account but yes, there are definitely official responses to the study saying that it only shows a correlation and not causation.
Expression-Little@reddit
This was my thought - correlation does not equal causation.
total-blasphemy@reddit
No, unless you're concerned about golf balls in the garden.
darkhaloangel1@reddit
The pesticides and herbicides they spray on a golf course will be comparable to a normal food producing field. I don't reckon they'll be many downsides. I live next to a bowling green (it's a bit noisy when there is a match on) but other than that it's a quite piece of land.
Gc1981@reddit
Wear a tin foil hat and you'll be OK.
TheDayvanCowboy_@reddit
Sadly, you are likely to have to interact with the sort of people who play golf.
ToiletPaperSlingshot@reddit
Please explain how 1. They would have to interact with people who play golf and 2. How that would be a problem…
Weary_Rule_6729@reddit
i worked behind the bar of a golf club between the ages of 17-22, its definitely a problem
ubiquitousuk@reddit
My thoughts exactly.
moogly9@reddit
Only issue we have is burglaries (not us but most others on our side of the road) from people being able to climb over peoples back garden fences from the golf course. Everyone’s got CCTV etc and just have to be vigilant, the benefits of the house still far outweigh the issue. Never heard of the pesticide issue, it’s much better regulated here than the US so I’d be surprised.
Ok_Lecture_8886@reddit
Was going to comment on burglaries too. The upside the golf course is unlikely to be built on, unlike other places with good views.
Ki1664@reddit
Our house backs straight onto a golf course. Issues we have are Monday mornings while I’m in the home office staring out at those playing and wondering where I’ve gone wrong in life. Also the odd golf ball landing in the garden is annoying as I’ve almost been hit a couple of times.
moon-bouquet@reddit
Don’t forget the swearing!
thejazzassassin@reddit
Ok - he's almost been hit a couple of fucking times.
BlueHoopedMoose@reddit
Or...
Parkinson's is normally diagnosed later in life, some old people like to move to open spaces near golf courses. Over the years, more houses have been built near golf courses, so more old(er) people.
If you know, love or care for someone who is in to golf then buy it. The number of free golf balls fantastic.
MissingScore777@reddit
Doesn't make it true but the study did account for this.
It was saying that people living near golf courses got Parkinson's earlier and at greater incidence across all ages.
It wasn't just pure numbers.
OrganizationFun2140@reddit
Biggest issue I ever had with living close to a golf course was anger at them not being subject to hosepipe bans during heatwaves.
Eddbrit89@reddit
Why would you even be angry about that
OrganizationFun2140@reddit
Lived near one as a kid during the extended heatwaves of 75/76. Domestic properties were under really severe water restrictions (think family-of-five-allowed-one bath-a-week-and-have-to-share-same-bath-water type restrictions) while the golf club was permitted to happily water every single inch of the course every single night. Hated golf ever since.
Commercial-Diet4478@reddit
Goodness, yes. I lived near a golf course. I remember the sprinklers.
No_Snow_8746@reddit
Use it anyway in such a situation.

OP, if you do live near a golf course youve got to take the rough with the smooth
Hungry-Let-1054@reddit
I thought it was a fore-gone conclusion that no one would get a pun in. But you nailed it to the tee.

RedViking81@reddit
That's..putting it beautifully...

It's more about being close to a tee and being woken at the crack of dawn all through the summer whilst folks tee off.
Tiny_Assumption15@reddit
I like tee in the morning so that wouldn't bother me.
Cheapntacky@reddit
If you're worried about stuff being sprayed on the golf course I'd be worried more about the stuff being sprayed over the farmland.
I live in a village next to a golf course. It has no impact on my life.
ladinga101@reddit (OP)
Good point
shortymcsteve@reddit
People are writing this off as nonsense, but I was also reading into this last week and it’s quite concerning really. The studies I read showed significant effects on people living 3 miles away, but this was in the US.
I think it’s worth looking into proper scientific research for the U.K before making a decision.
ladinga101@reddit (OP)
Thanks. I am really encouraged that most people think there isn’t a problem but I agree I need to try and get a bit of scientific info too to confirm. Not entirely sure how but I will do my best and if I find anything that clarifies things I will update here.

These days, bigger risk of it being sold off and it becoming a housing estate.

Lots of traffic and people when the Open was held there every 8 years or so. Apart from that, it was nice having a big space next to me.

There might be a few birdies, but that's par for the course
DoctorRaulDuke@reddit
I used to live on a road that ran parallel to a golf course fairway, all the houses faced the road, on the other side of which was the course. I would get 2 dents a year on my car and so many broken roof tiles that I had a standing agreement with a roofer - he drove past every 6 months, replaced any that were broken and pushed a receipt through the door.
The golf course accepted no responsibilty for any damage, and any golfers you challenged got quite abusive when you asked for their (required by law) insurance. Fortunately I had company car at the time so let their lawyers sort out the dents.
It was a beautiful place to live and you just had to find a way of letting go of the anger and appreciating what was good about the situation.
Perennial_Phoenix@reddit
I have played golf for 30 years, and I have never heard of anything like that. I have never seen anything being sprayed on courses aside from water from the sprinkler system.
Some courses may differ in terms of what they use, but I very much doubt they be in quantities and regularity that you'll have any issues living near one.
Sasspishus@reddit
I used to live opposite a golf course and for me the main issues were:
• the vague possibility of being hit by a flying golf ball (sometimes found them in the front garden)
• the near constant drone of the lawnmowers going back and forth over the ground
Probably depends on the exact configuration though, and how annoyed you are by lawnmowers!
ObsydianGinx@reddit
Risk of broken windows? Risk of being hit in the head when in your garden?
latrappe@reddit
There's one 5 mins walk from me. We walk the dog there, it's gorgeous on a sunny day. Good craic with the golfers as you walk round. It is a council course in Edinburgh so I guess private courses probably ban everyone from enjoying it.
WarWonderful593@reddit
A little birdie told me that you just have to bunker down and accept the hole thing or you'll be green with envy.

Not sure I can putt up with that.

ubiquitousuk@reddit
Fore what it's worth, a little Birdie told me that life by a golf course is on Par with life near any other kind of Club. Don't let the negative Bogey men Put you off. Once you get in the Swing of things, this life will suit you to a Tee.
Of Course, such a home can cost you a Wedge and may be a Fairway from the shops, the Links with the local golfing community and abundant Green space make it worthwhile unless the bad roads are too much of a Handicap. Even that problem can be Ironed out with decent tires unless you've got a Hole in One of them. So, grow some Balls and Bunker down to do some Shots. Then have your designated Driver take you Round for an Eagle eye view of the place.

Higher risk of Parkinson’s has been found in those who live near a golf course- likely bc of chemicals used in ground sleeping
SunSimilar9988@reddit
Broken windows
Happy_Assumption7983@reddit
This issue/recent media interest is predominantly a US issue. If you write to your local club most are very for coming with details to the chemicals/sprays they use. Uk law is much stricter than US
JimmyBallocks@reddit
there will be golf men
takesthebiscuit@reddit
Proximity to golf cunts seems to be the biggest issue
Select_Grocery_1667@reddit
I think the issues come from the us we are much stricter on these sort of things

Strusselated@reddit
Risk of Parkinson’s.
Key_Seaworthiness827@reddit
Loads of potentially smug / self entitled tw@s in shitty jumpers and slacks near your house. Not an issue for some but not sure I want it.
vysh7nnav@reddit
Pesticides they use to maintain the field.
I’m not an expert in this but please do have a look into this as well.
Similar_Quiet@reddit
It's pretty unlikely you're drinking pesticide laden water that washes off the golf course. It's just not how water supply usually works in the uk
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
Main issue was golf balls coming into new build house. They eventually planted a row of screening trees. Most golf courses in UK aren't as vigorously kept as in US.
Jealous_Union_4925@reddit
I did see a few articles like this recently linking proximity to golf courses to health issues https://www.apdaparkinson.org/article/golf-course-concerns-new-research-shows-link-to-parkinsons/
Jealous-Honeydew-142@reddit
It’s on Par with everywhere else really.

There are fore issues living next to a golf course.
Particular_Work_1789@reddit
There’s a golf course near me and as an early riser I often go for a walk nearby. The sound of an industrial lawn mower at 6:00am on a Sunday would infuriate me if I did like to lie in. Also the ‘thwack’ sound of a ball would grate if was trying to relax nearby. On the whole am glad I don’t live too near it and feel that although nice to view would be detrimental to living.
InformationNew66@reddit
Make sure to check prices and membership options, it is nice if you can just hop in from nearby and play.
CanaryWundaboy@reddit
Very common now as a lot of golf course land is being sold off for housing development. Haven’t heard of anything to do with Parkinson’s but unless you’re walking the golf course every day after they’ve treated it huffing the ground I’m sure you’re fine.
Fragile_reddit_mods@reddit
The ONLY issue would be events being held on it. If you can get past that I can’t imagine any issues you’d have. And hey, there’s a golf course right there you can play on with the permission of the owners.
Pale_Slide_3463@reddit
Idk what golf courses you are looking at but there’s a massive one near me though don’t live beside it and no one in the 30 years I’ve been in the town has anyone complained about the golf course lol.
The only disadvantage is when there is a big event happening at it or during the summer with tourists. Other than that you wouldn’t even know it’s there.
