Everyone should start looking for the doors if they are instituting this type of cost-cutting measure. This cut means that they are no longer capable of recruiting top-tier talent at any level because 401k matches are so standard now.
It's Werner. They are a training company. No top tier talent takes a job at Werner. Because there are way better opportunities out there for experienced drivers.
This is expected behavior from a mega. You are an expendable asset to move their cheap freight from point A to B. You should see their terminal up in Dallas. Drivers aren't even allowed to visit their dispatcher in the office.
Their terminal is more like a secured compound than trucking company, where drivers are respected and welcomed.
Nobody wants long term employees anymore. Every second post is about someone getting fired for running a yellow light, or missing a speed limit sign on the nanny cam without even getting a ticket. The megas are paying 650 a week and denying home time. This is a hardship career and should pay as such. Rates adjust to accommodate increases in fuel, licensing, and maintenance.. they can adjust for raising labor costs too. Don’t let them fool you.
650 a week? i couldn find one that paid less than 1000 a week, but few that would pay over 1300 a week, which is what i make 44hrs a week as a box truck driver driving under 25 miles a week on a data center site lol

They specifically found messages between the driver and dispatch that she was afraid and didn't want to drive, but Werner told her that she had to drive in order to make her appointment.

Ok, so for you, “it is what it is”. You don’t feel any need to analyze the reasons for anything? You don’t feel the need to look for ways to improve society or to reduce suffering? In order to improve the day-to-day conditions of humans around the world, shouldn’t we question and try to explain how we got here?
And that’s not exactly “it is what it is.” More like, “that which has actually happened” when dealing with historical reality, and “that which can be philosophically reasoned in a coherent way” when dealing with the metaphysical.
I do. But when some people do that they cherry pick the parts of history that most fit their narratives and assign political motivations that don’t belong, and generally offer solutions to these manufactured or exaggerated problems that are more onerous than the problems themselves.
I have learned more about history in the last few years during my deep dive into socialism that I ever learned in school. It’s honestly mind blowing what they don’t teach you in the United States is because they don’t want you to know how we’ve been sucking the rest of the world dry for our own gain. In other words, the textbooks cherry picked history for the gain of having good little obedient workers.
How is telling the story of atrocities being a crybaby? You’re doing good! Are you a bot? Or just a bored truck driver like me? Lol. We were in a really good position after World War II. Because of the size of our country, and the position that we didn’t really sustain any damage at home during the war. For that time, propping up the world, economy, benefited ourselves, and for the most part, it was a great program and a good idea. But our decicion to squash socialism around the world did a lot of damage. Especially in central and South America. The Soviet Union didn’t have to be our enemy, just as China doesn’t have to be our enemy now. it’s only the fear of losing American power and corporate power and profit. Also, most of those countries paid back their debts to the United States in the billions. And they’ve been forced to use the US dollar. Which makes us the de facto ruler of the world.
Also, bored truck driver, lol. My truck was in the shop for an ELD connectivity issue but it’s fixed now. Glad we could get past the initial Reddit ridicule stage a little and actually converse a bit. Have a good one, gotta ride.
Because Zinn only focuses on the sins of the west and ignores everyone else’s. He also seems to forget what the world was like before the rise of the west. Life was “nasty, brutish, and short.”
And no, the Soviets could not be our friends. Collectivism is the natural enemy to liberty. Human beings are equal in inherent value in the eyes of God, and so deserve equal rights (sorry but there is no good philosophical argument about human value or equality that doesn’t include a creator) but are not equal in talent, motivation, or ability which means that the profit incentive drives production and innovation. It can get out of control with an uneducated populace, and perhaps it has to a degree.
To be clear, I don’t call myself a Marxist. I call myself a socialist. Anyways, Marx did not advocate for a reduction in liberty and a rise in state power. He advocated for a rise and power among the proletariat, which would describe you and me. After removing the owning class, there should be no class. There have been people in the past that have called themselves communist that were not true communists. Also, “reduction of liberty through state power“.. doesn’t that describe what’s going on right now in the United States and elsewhere? If you can’t afford food and have no way to retire, isn’t that a reduction of liberty?
Well, I’m not gonna explain the “no true communist” statement here. I invite you to look up Pot and Ceaușescu (evil). But, I can’t address the concept that without intervention to protect people that have less power, it only provides the runway for the rich powerful to get away with their wildest dreams.
Marx also didn’t foresee collective bargaining and the welfare state. I think that’s a big reason why the left needs to exaggerate problems. Don’t need a revolution if things aren’t so bad.
You didn’t answer the question. How do you explain it? There must be a reason. Or do you just go through life excepting all the horror…not asking questions and not wondering why?
I actually know quite a bit about the conflict and it’s complicated. The Palestinians want all of the Jews dead and many of the Jews want to kill the Palestinians. The history goes back thousands of years. They both suck.
Jews, Christians, Muslims, and other religions lived more or less harmoniously in greater Palestine until Zionists decided they wanted to create a religious ethno-state. This was hastened by the atrocities of World War II. World powers like Britain did not help keep the peace by forcing Partition. And after the Nakba, the war, killing, and land-stealing began. Zionists have pushed and pushed until we have the genocide that you see today.
That’s sort of true, but you aren’t going back far enough. When Palestine was a stateless territory of tribalism and all of the Jews and Christians had been kicked out of the neighboring Arab states, there was “relative” harmony in the region. Zionists were for sure on the dealing end of terrorist attacks (King David Hotel?) but also the receiving end. Much of the land was purchased fairly. Then much of it was gained in warfare, usually not directly initiated by Israel.
Every place is racist. Hell, the most racist people I've seen in 1 place was New York city. Not one person liked anyone. Get the fuck over it and quit acting like racism doesn't exist but in red states. Hate to tell you this but there is a difference between hating someone for the color of their skin and hating someone for being a piece of shit. You sir are a piece of shit so if hating people like you who constantly tell the world where the racist are not knowing the people and only judge them, then I sir am a racist. Cause I would love to purge the world of you " My shit don't stink" while smelling their asshole everytime they talk who just can't let it go and constantly has to remind the world it exist instead of living your shity life to the fullest. Get the fuck over it. The world don't fucking care about skin color. They give more of a damn about the fucking character of a person. Your character is a piece of shit.
$100 Mil because a trainer was asleep in the bunk while a, basically, raw trainee was driving in snow.
$100 Mil because they found messages between the driver and dispatch that proved said driver tried to communicate their discomfort to dispatch and was coerced into believing they had no choice but to drive.
Both drivers were found to be around 15% liable while Werner took 70%.
So they're going to charge the driver $15 gorillion dolláires and bankrupt the company because some dumbass in dispatch wanted them to drive in snow and another asshole just happened to cross the median and get his family YEETed?
I’ve been watching this case for a couple years. With interest, it’s over $130M. The Texas Supreme Court will rule on it any day now. Wild times ahead!
I could have sworn i read an article about that last year saying the guy in the pickup was driving on a suspended license but now I never see that mentioned. Either way, that's a total crock of a lawsuit. Our courts are so screwed up.
How the hell is it foreseeable that you can predict that someone will lose control and come across the highway and hit you while you're doing everything right! Does this mean Texas will blame you for the other driver being drunk and hitting you too and then causing a fatality?
No one with a cdl wants them to lose that case, it literally says you’re a truck so it’s your fault for being on the road. A pickup crossed the median and hit the truck and it’s the trucks fault for injury? What the actual fuck, we’d all be liable for every little thing ever and no one would be able to drive a truck anywhere without getting sued constantly which’s is pretty much how it is now but not really.
The money from the lawsuit was already set aside by accounting a few years ago, if they do lose the appeal it doesn’t impact their financials moving forward
I used to put a shoe on the accelerator when I slept because my company had auto idle off, and they refused to get me a generator, or wtver they are called, I can't remember.
Get Ready For Them & Other Trucking Companies, To Tell You Absolutely No Idling This Summer. And Advise You To Go Hang Out Inside Of Truck Stops, Or Go Sit Under A Shady Tree, Or Some Other Shitty Idea unless You Wanna Be Terminated.
lol literally no other industry expects this much out of people. My time in the fucking Marine Corps was more humane and fair than trucking. As i like to point out, what office employee is expected to clock out at 5:00pm and return to work at 3:00am? crickets
Yeah, i can see that perspective. I would have to assume you were making significantly more money on the oilfield though. Hard/ball-busting work is only good if the pay matches the effort and sacrifices. If not, it’s just the willingness to be extorted.
The expectation is 70hrs/week when you're not paid by the hour.
And then your dispatcher will have the fucking GALL to tell you you're not a man if you're at anything below that (literally happened to me when I worked for Marten).
I drive a forklift for 50 hrs/week now and make bigger paychecks than I did driving for Werner last year, because 10 hrs/week is paid out at $44/hr. If I could pull 70 hrs, I'd be making well over $2k/week.
Don’t just leave. Wreck every piece of their equipment you can get your collective hands on, then leave. If they’re gonna be that childish and selfish, give them their own medicine right back. “I’m okay, so everyone else is okay” is an unacceptable mentality for people in charge to have. It needs to cost them.
It’s really shitty. I’m part of the office staff and it sucks. I hate either not being allowed to answer the drivers’ questions or having to tell them I don’t know because I’m at fear of losing my job. We all got told that we need to go to war for Werner. And this was right before our annual reviews so we know there are no raises coming for anyone. We were told the only people who are not at risk of getting fired are drivers and mechanics. We were told CEO and all executives took pay cuts, but I don’t believe it.
Trying to find a new job for myself. And I feel awful about that too. And awful for a lot of our drivers.
CEO got a raise. They lied to you. It's a publicly traded company, all of their financials are listed right there in their SEC filings, including Derek's pay. He got a raise this year, and last, and the year before that, every year.
I have never looked before, my fault for being ignorant before. I’m no longer ignorant and I never believed they took a pay cut. I know they are screwing with our drivers and low office people.
My company’s cost cutting entailed limiting our truck and trailer washed (outside of trailer) to once every 90 days. I’d rather them do that then take away from my 401k match.
You can rollover your 401k to an appropriate IRA and set your contributions to the 401k to 0% without being taxed for it, which I very much recommend doing. You'd get fewer fees and better growth in an IRA, anyway.
Insane. They told me at orientation not even a year ago that Werner was probably one of the healthiest megas financially. That they didn’t use debt to buy their trucks, and probably a bunch of other lies.
I don't like Werner but I worked in homebuilding when the market crashed last time. 401k matching and other stuff was suspended. The company made it through, reinstated everything, and is still going today. Doing what they did lessened the lay offs. Just sayin. Trucking is first in and first out when things go bad.
My problem is that these companies make 100s of millions, if not billions. Then they decide to hurt the people who actually make them money and are already underpayed to begin with. This is unacceptable to me. Most of these companies are already stealing from their drivers every day by taking advantage of useless and unfair labor laws that only pertain to our industry in particular. Im willing to bet warner is one of them. I know my company steals from me every day since I get PPM and not hourly, and they take advantage of that. These companies deserve no excuses.
I apologize if I come off as angry. But this industry is in the state it's in because of people not standing up for themselves. We need unions. But the trucking demographic will never allow it. Too many bigoted, racist and ignorant people drive trucks, sadly.
Husb works for Werner. He saw something abt higher ups getting some cuts but I’m not positive. I told him yesterday to start looking again. He’s been trying to leave for 2 yrs but it’s difficult bc of where we live. I lowered the 401k contribution and I’m looking to see where else that money could go and do better.
I don't know and I am not sticking up for them. Just adding to the discussion. I know bonuses were also suspended for management at the company I was at, along with salary reductions. I was an accountant so was part of all the cost cutting decisions. It's easy to read an inflammatory headline and just start assuming.
I used to work for Werner as an OTR Team driver. They tried to get me to deliver loads during my home time with the truck being in Atlanta and me living in East Tennessee.
They picked co-drivers that were more than 100 miles from me.
They also not only split the pay but also the miles. It didn’t matter if I drove more than my co-driver or if he drove more. If your co-driver if being punished for some reason, so are you.
There is a possibility of you having bad information on drop yards, terminals that were turned into drop yards.
The trip planners are not former truckers. There is a big chance you will be sent down a route that will have a major storm and they will bitch and moan about you using your own judgment to find a better route that will not send you through a storm. AND you may get your load pick up cancelled when you are halfway there because of factors that the trip planners did not think about(such as lane closures, traffic jams, or construction delays). The response will always be “why didn’t you leave earlier?”.
“As part of our previously communicated $40 million cost savings initiative for 2025, Werner is taking intentional steps to streamline operations and position the company for long-term growth,” the company said in a statement released to FreightWaves in response to a request for comment. “This includes difficult but necessary organizational changes. We remain committed to supporting our people through this transition and maintaining operational strength for our customers.”
Id say its hard to tell if this is corprate greed or just a hard business decision for the moment. I mean having a quarter to quarter rate of about -170% is pretty bad.
I mean, they’ve been called “The Big Blue Screw” since way before I started driving. This sounds like just another turn of the screwdriver.
But seriously, folks, this sucks. I would never recommend working for Werner, even just to get your schooling and license. Now I can’t even recommend if even if they have a location down the street and have a home daily local gig they’re dangling in front of your face.
They’re in trouble, financially, and if this is something they’re going to do to try to right the ship, everything else is on the chopping block, too.
When you institutionalize waste into your standard operating procedures when the economy is good, you only hurt yourself when the economy is bad. Rather than taking the time to identify where the waste is, the knee jerk reaction is to make the easy cuts to spending.

And that’s not exactly “it is what it is.” More like, “that which has actually happened” when dealing with historical reality, and “that which can be philosophically reasoned in a coherent way” when dealing with the metaphysical.
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
What would happen if you applied philosophy to history?
Snookfilet@reddit
I do. But when some people do that they cherry pick the parts of history that most fit their narratives and assign political motivations that don’t belong, and generally offer solutions to these manufactured or exaggerated problems that are more onerous than the problems themselves.
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
I have learned more about history in the last few years during my deep dive into socialism that I ever learned in school. It’s honestly mind blowing what they don’t teach you in the United States is because they don’t want you to know how we’ve been sucking the rest of the world dry for our own gain. In other words, the textbooks cherry picked history for the gain of having good little obedient workers.
Snookfilet@reddit
Nah, Howard Zinn is just a crybaby. You can make an argument that global abject poverty was eradicated by American foreign policy since the end of WW2
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
Snookfilet@reddit
Also, bored truck driver, lol. My truck was in the shop for an ELD connectivity issue but it’s fixed now. Glad we could get past the initial Reddit ridicule stage a little and actually converse a bit. Have a good one, gotta ride.
Snookfilet@reddit
Snookfilet@reddit
Yes. I just disagree with the conclusions of marxists.
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
Why do you think that Marxist are sinister?
Snookfilet@reddit
Because Marxism necessarily deteriorates into a reduction of liberty through state power.
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
To be clear, I don’t call myself a Marxist. I call myself a socialist. Anyways, Marx did not advocate for a reduction in liberty and a rise in state power. He advocated for a rise and power among the proletariat, which would describe you and me. After removing the owning class, there should be no class. There have been people in the past that have called themselves communist that were not true communists. Also, “reduction of liberty through state power“.. doesn’t that describe what’s going on right now in the United States and elsewhere? If you can’t afford food and have no way to retire, isn’t that a reduction of liberty?
Snookfilet@reddit
I don’t think Marx understood human nature. That’s why the “no true communist” argument exists.
I do think what is happening in the US reduces liberty. I think we need drastically less state interference into our lives.
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
Well, I’m not gonna explain the “no true communist” statement here. I invite you to look up Pot and Ceaușescu (evil). But, I can’t address the concept that without intervention to protect people that have less power, it only provides the runway for the rich powerful to get away with their wildest dreams.
Snookfilet@reddit
Marx also didn’t foresee collective bargaining and the welfare state. I think that’s a big reason why the left needs to exaggerate problems. Don’t need a revolution if things aren’t so bad.
Snookfilet@reddit
Speaking of vague generalizations
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
How do you explain it?
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
You didn’t answer the question. How do you explain it? There must be a reason. Or do you just go through life excepting all the horror…not asking questions and not wondering why?
Snookfilet@reddit
I actually know quite a bit about the conflict and it’s complicated. The Palestinians want all of the Jews dead and many of the Jews want to kill the Palestinians. The history goes back thousands of years. They both suck.
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
If that’s your explanation of the conflict, then I question your statement that you, “actually know quite a bit”.
Snookfilet@reddit
I mean we could take a deep dive if you want. Did you need my dissertation? Lol
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
You wrote a dissertation?
Snookfilet@reddit
I did, but not on Israel/Palestine. I was being facetious.
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
Jews, Christians, Muslims, and other religions lived more or less harmoniously in greater Palestine until Zionists decided they wanted to create a religious ethno-state. This was hastened by the atrocities of World War II. World powers like Britain did not help keep the peace by forcing Partition. And after the Nakba, the war, killing, and land-stealing began. Zionists have pushed and pushed until we have the genocide that you see today.
Snookfilet@reddit

ComprehensiveDark814@reddit
But if the truck wasn't at fault then none of that stuff should be relevant, right?
Thepopethroway@reddit
So they're going to charge the driver $15 gorillion dolláires and bankrupt the company because some dumbass in dispatch wanted them to drive in snow and another asshole just happened to cross the median and get his family YEETed?
American justice system lol lmao
Armchair-Attorney@reddit
I’ve been watching this case for a couple years. With interest, it’s over $130M. The Texas Supreme Court will rule on it any day now. Wild times ahead!
CrashingTiger@reddit
I could have sworn i read an article about that last year saying the guy in the pickup was driving on a suspended license but now I never see that mentioned. Either way, that's a total crock of a lawsuit. Our courts are so screwed up.
DarkR4v3nsky@reddit
How the hell is it foreseeable that you can predict that someone will lose control and come across the highway and hit you while you're doing everything right! Does this mean Texas will blame you for the other driver being drunk and hitting you too and then causing a fatality?
Thepopethroway@reddit
well werner is a hecking corporation and the driver was a motherino
Thus, facts don't matter
Smegma-sniff@reddit
If an airplane falls out of the sky and crashes into your truck the driver of the truck is going to be held liable
Thepopethroway@reddit
he should have known it was a boeing plane. What did he expect? 500 billion dollars cash payment by 12 PM or execution by firing squad
thtamthrfckr@reddit
No one with a cdl wants them to lose that case, it literally says you’re a truck so it’s your fault for being on the road. A pickup crossed the median and hit the truck and it’s the trucks fault for injury? What the actual fuck, we’d all be liable for every little thing ever and no one would be able to drive a truck anywhere without getting sued constantly which’s is pretty much how it is now but not really.
kanodoggg@reddit
Bullshit case. They have to pay 130 million because of some idiot 4 wheelers that don't know how to drive in snow.
Junior-Credit2685@reddit
Keeping this article to show my dispatcher when I don’t feel like driving on ice! Thanks!
Myterryfolds@reddit
That is the most ridiculous lawsuit I’ve ever read. How could that possibly be at fault for Werner?
steveoriley@reddit
The money from the lawsuit was already set aside by accounting a few years ago, if they do lose the appeal it doesn’t impact their financials moving forward
legendarygarlicfarm@reddit (OP)
They're cutting costs by firing anyone they can, because they don't have to report those as layoffs, which would tank their stock
Fun_Push_2835@reddit
They already did reported layoffs last week, also layoff announcements rarely tank stocks. “Shareholder value” or some BS

lol literally no other industry expects this much out of people. My time in the fucking Marine Corps was more humane and fair than trucking. As i like to point out, what office employee is expected to clock out at 5:00pm and return to work at 3:00am? crickets
allplay@reddit
Man, I left oilfield and trucking is much nicer. Having 8 hours between shifts is also a blessing.
NuttNDButt@reddit
Yeah, i can see that perspective. I would have to assume you were making significantly more money on the oilfield though. Hard/ball-busting work is only good if the pay matches the effort and sacrifices. If not, it’s just the willingness to be extorted.
Thepopethroway@reddit
Oilfield pay hasn't gone up since 2010. They just work insane hours to compensate and consider it 'fair' because of overtime.
The only jobs paying what you're worth now are Unions and Unions alone.
Outlaw11091@reddit
That's why I got out.

Spot_Powerful@reddit
And awful for a lot of our drivers.
bezm12@reddit
CEO got a raise. They lied to you. It's a publicly traded company, all of their financials are listed right there in their SEC filings, including Derek's pay. He got a raise this year, and last, and the year before that, every year.
Spot_Powerful@reddit
I have never looked before, my fault for being ignorant before. I’m no longer ignorant and I never believed they took a pay cut. I know they are screwing with our drivers and low office people.

You can rollover your 401k to an appropriate IRA and set your contributions to the 401k to 0% without being taxed for it, which I very much recommend doing. You'd get fewer fees and better growth in an IRA, anyway.

Twisty12223@reddit
I don't like Werner but I worked in homebuilding when the market crashed last time. 401k matching and other stuff was suspended. The company made it through, reinstated everything, and is still going today. Doing what they did lessened the lay offs. Just sayin. Trucking is first in and first out when things go bad.
santanzchild@reddit
You can't speak sense here. Everything is about the evil corporations and the literally Hitlers running them.
ManagerSilver1592@reddit
Twisty12223@reddit

queentracy62@reddit
Husb works for Werner. He saw something abt higher ups getting some cuts but I’m not positive. I told him yesterday to start looking again. He’s been trying to leave for 2 yrs but it’s difficult bc of where we live. I lowered the 401k contribution and I’m looking to see where else that money could go and do better.
Twisty12223@reddit
I don't know and I am not sticking up for them. Just adding to the discussion. I know bonuses were also suspended for management at the company I was at, along with salary reductions. I was an accountant so was part of all the cost cutting decisions. It's easy to read an inflammatory headline and just start assuming.
stayzero@reddit
That’s not a good sign for a company as big as Werner. I wonder what shape they’re really in overall and if they’re able to weather a recession.
bigthunder_81@reddit
SafariJim@reddit
