Should I re-install the catalytic converter on my 2010 Lancer?

I recently bought a 2010 Lancer off Marketplace and the car runs beautifully except for the persistent check engine light. I ran it through an OBD and got code P0420 repeatedly. My mechanic told me it looks like the previous owner had performed a cat delete. I don't care about the check engine light always being there, but should I buy a new catalytic converter and have it installed? Will not having one negatively impact my car at all?

I've never owned a car without a converter but I've owned several without functioning converters and I've always hated the smell, and I've thought it rude for other road users. I've typically either taken them off the road or drove them minimally until I got a functioning converter installed. Just my $0.02, my answer would be yes.

Anyone who follows you in traffic and any pedestrians/cyclists you pass will appreciate a properly functioning catalytic converter.
That catalytic converter isn’t for you or your car — it’s for everyone around you and our lungs.

Depending on where you live, a catalytic converter may be required to pass inspection. It will certainly help with emissions. With looking into inspection guidelines for your state.
