Is Kevin Mcleod from Grand Designs an energy vampire?
Posted by OnlyProblems@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 108 comments
Recently learned he's 66 years old, which I couldn't quite believe. My theory is that he visits people who are under prolonged, extreme stress. Makes jokes, interrogates how much over-budget they are and then leaves, having absorbed their energy.
PhantomLamb@reddit
My wife was on an episode of GD! Said KM swore loads and made rude jokes, but all in all was a nice guy. Also said she didnt see him much at all though as the show is made by a production team and he turns up a couple of times with a wardrobe to change outfits to give the impression he is there more. Said the production team were amazing and really nice.
Particular_Store8743@reddit
Remember the episode where that one guy actually died halfway through? You could be on to something.

C'mon, nobody going to mention Highlander? Sulks away in old.....
Ok_Net4562@reddit
Why have you made 5 posts about this guy in the last 10 minutes?
Cackweed@reddit
I'm sure it has nothing to do with him being a redditor for 9 years and only starting to post 3 days ago.

Silvia is an older stay at home mum, selling earwax candles on etsy. Alistair is a work from home checkout assistant. They have 5 kids amd need to move out of their shoe by winter. Their budget is £400
Anathemare@reddit
There was one (actually lovely) couple where the husband was a hang gliding instructor. Like wtf man.
Also yes they had a kid during the show.
Perfect grand designs stereotype. But lovely people and a house that makes me jealous.
carfniex@reddit
i think that one was the first one they did, 25 years ago. they had a budget of about 60k and had to push to get it to 70, with which they built an entire house. cool

StNeotsCitizen@reddit
Close, but their budget is somehow £4.8 million
jonewer@reddit
And somehow are £700k over budget with the house half built and they're living in a caravan in the middle of winter

Still no contingency though.

Oh that's the gift from the parents and friends when they go over budget.

Since we’re on the subject, what’s the best episode of Grand Designs to show someone that’s never watched the show before? I’m talking all the cliches, all the breakdowns. Bonus points for biggest disaster.
My other half is new to the country, and I feel this is one of those shows you have to watch at least once.
BohemianBuoy@reddit
There was that episode in Cornwall or Devon where the guy has an insane plan and literally loses all his money trying to make it a reality, whilst simultaneously seeing his marriage completely break down.
At the end, they speak to his daughters who chastise him for ever starting it.
jimkounter@reddit
It's definitely the North Devon lighthouse project. I believe he's sold it and the new owner has now completed it. It really looks as good as the original builder's vision too, a really lovely special house.
Unfortunately it completely ruined the builder's life in the process. It's a really sad watch.
Here's a picture of the completed house, it's even got tagged as "Simon's House" on Google maps.
r_mutt69@reddit
Omg yeah, this. He started off full of hubris about how much he was spinning on this house and it ended up completely ruining everything. I don’t like to laugh at other’s misfortune but honestly, if he’d have been a little more realistic about things then he could have avoided that. Plonker

Think I know this one. Didn't he end up selling the house in the end?

From the other side, where everything goes right and there's feel-good vibes from start to finish, there's the Woodsman's Cottage, episode 3/3, then 5/4 and 7/5 where they revisited.
r_mutt69@reddit
Was that the one built in a massive a frame and he basically lived under a tarp on site during the build? If so then yeah I loved that one
AdEmbarrassed3066@reddit
Yep... that's the one.
r_mutt69@reddit
See, I love it when they do an episode like that. He built a lovely house and it all worked out for him. He deserved it too
shortymcsteve@reddit
Haha thank you, I appreciate you providing a positive episode. I’ll add to the list.
I have my own to add to that, S15E6 - The shipping container home in Northern Ireland. I remember the guy was an architect, and definitely knew what he was doing.
Relative_Grape_5883@reddit
I loved the one with the Gull wing roof who made a complete pants of the whole thing

I was going to mention this, pretty sure it bankrupt him, he ended up divorced, it never got finished and he can't sell it

Definitely the bloke in Cornwall I think, he completely knocked down what was there, took like 6+ years to get something built, which was another 2 bedroom cottage that he had mortgage on as well.
On the revisit, the kids hated him, wife left him and he still didn't own anything but the house was definitely finished.....
shortymcsteve@reddit
Is this the same one mentioned above by u/BohemianBuoy ? If so, sounds like it’s top of the list.
webseyuk@reddit
Yeah, didn't notice his comment
TheMeanderer@reddit
That episode (and followup) is an emotional catastrophe. Not even in the schadenfreude kind of way. The guy wanted to build something astounding (and did in the end), but kicked off in 2007 or something. It clearly consumed him and ruined his life, but he wasn't awful in the way that some builders are.
webseyuk@reddit
The question is which episode is the most grand designs and it's that one, you can be like this encapsulation of everything emotionally induced that watching the 14+ seasons will have on you
louiselovatic@reddit
This is the second post about this I’ve seen in 2 minutes and I don’t even know what you’re trying to say

I'm confused, do you think he's younger than 66? That seems to be what you're implying, but he looks his age, if not older.
Mastodan11@reddit
He's only just turned 66 as well. I think he looks his age, but has done for about 15 years.
adulion@reddit
did i see him with hearing aids?
Edam-Column@reddit
What?
tollbearer@reddit
66 isn't even that old. I know 66 year olds who still look very young. It's only really 75+ that people start to consistently look old.
trouser_mouse@reddit
The home builder walked hesitantly along the cold brick hallway. Ahead, a soft light flickered from underneath an old wooden door.
Reaching the door, he tried the handle and the door creaked open. His eyes moved, looking around the room. In contrast to the dark hallway, the wood panelled room was lit by the warm light of table lamps and scented candles, and soft violin music drifted from an adjoining room. Who was playing the music, he wondered.
From the adjoining room, a voice. "Have you ever heard such a song?" the voice said in an unusual tone, soft, yet sharp like a bat's tooth.
"There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea
You became the light on the dark side of me -"
The door to the adjoining room opened and there was the Kevin McCloud. Behind him, an antique chaise longue.
"I thought you slept in a coffin...?" the home builder said.
"Not when there are two of us," said Kevin.
THE END

Kevin McCloud, of the clan McCloud.

I always thought he was related to Monty don as they both have the same voice.

The Irish dude who fired his whole team because... reasons?
a_boy_called_sue@reddit
No not that one. This one had a wall fall down midway through. They had to run it as a BnB afterwards to find it. The view was amazing
TheMeanderer@reddit
Ooooh I remember that one. They were actually filming during the collapse, right?
a_boy_called_sue@reddit
I'm not sure if the film crew were there but I think one of the fixed cameras caught it

This is Ian, he works as a part time llama tickler and this is his wife Sheila who occasionally sells paintings of spoons. They have a budget of 4 million pounds to build their dream home which is going to be a solid titanium cuboid suspended in aspic.

He particularly thrives off middle class stay at home mums that like playing project manager before the shit hits the fan and the artisan self-cleaning windows get installed backwards.

richmeister6666@reddit
I still can’t believe grand designs has been going for so long, it’s always the same format: narcissistic rich bloke sees himself as modern day Michelangelo, goes horrendously over budget, almost a breakdown either of their own mental health or their marriages and a stay at home wife, maybe who’s from money herself. Middle class bilge.
Available_Remove452@reddit
Cracks me up that middle class owners think builders will work unsupervised.
Mario_911@reddit
I love it every time. My main issue is how infrequently it's on. A new series will come out, you'll get 2 new episodes and the rest will be every third week and revisits to old episodes
thrrowaway4obreasons@reddit
If only more hopelessly clueless rich guys were building overly expensive houses. Someone should really be funding this
