We are the only generation that still parties like it’s 1999

We grew up on our own with zero parental supervision or support and we are still going strong . Maybe , it’s just me but I wish things were more like the 80’s.

This sub-reddit is embarrassing.
aarontsuru@reddit
It really can be. People wallowing in romanticized nostalgia or worse, thinking we are somehow superior or unique.
Dull-Geologist-8204@reddit
It's not romanticized nostalgia. The parties on New Years eve that year really were awesome.
Remember it was during the whole Y2K thing. There was this vibe of fuck it if we are going out with a bang we might as well party like it's the last night.
Everyone went all in even the people, like me, that knew it wasn't the end of the world. My late fiancé worked coding for the government so when people were acting crazy I just looked at him and he laughed and said it wasn't an issue and I believed him.
I sure as hell enjoyed the parties thrown by people who did think it was an issue. It was a good night and a favorite memory.
I can't do that anymore because I have kids and a bad back.
aarontsuru@reddit
My friend, young people are partying over the end of the world every day. Climate change, fascist politics, what do you think Gen Z & Alpha kids are doing? Partying to escape the misery.
Dull-Geologist-8204@reddit
No, it's different. Every event is different and none of them are comparable. It'll keep trying to compare partying that New Years eve to people partying before being shipped off to Vietnam. It's not the same.
Anyways according to reddit kids don't party anymore. Lol
aarontsuru@reddit
lol but yeah, it's the same but different.
I didn't "party" NYE 1999-00. But I did party and dance to escape my own issues back in the day. Just as everyone ever. There are always global events that will lead to "party like it's 1999" moments, but at the same time there will be many people who won't party in those moments. In the end, we are all just humans dealing with our perceived and real issues and ways of coping with them.
Dull-Geologist-8204@reddit
There is a feeling you can't replicate to when a whole country all at once thinks the world might end tomorrow.
I have been alive a lot longer and certain events have a certain feeling to them that sort of reverberates through the masses. None of them feel the same when you are going through them.
We are all just humans and it's not putting anyone down to say one thing is not like the other. It's just saying they feel different. Maybe once you have gone through enough of these types of events you will get it.
aarontsuru@reddit
Agree to disagree? Have a great long weekend!
Don_Pickleball@reddit
Whenever I start to think we are some kind of special rugged indivualists, I go and look at what the people I graduated high-school with are posting on Facebook these days. It instantly ruins any image of coolness I ever had.

It really is. I tend to like Gen X but they're worshipping a version of themselves that doesn't exist.

LurkerBurkeria@reddit
The whole post is low key sad lol christ gen X yall are aging into boomers right before our eyes all that's missing from OP is talking about drinking from a hose lol
It's such facebook aunt tier to talk about partying like it's 1999, wishing it was the 80s again, under the picture of someone born in the 12th century BC as their representation of gen X lol I lowkey love it
islandcatman@reddit
We love drinking from a hose! Don't judge!
Yes, this post is cringe. Most of GenX, I think, would agree. I see lol is a punctuation now lol love it
islandcatman@reddit
Even Keith Richards can look like he's trying too hard.
7LeagueBoots@reddit
Yeah, that snake is about to die of a drug overdose.
TrentWolfred@reddit
Yes, but that’s been said for more than 50 years. His perseverance tells another story.
And that, I can acknowledge is, arguably, pretty cool—despite the fact that Keith Richards was never particularly important to, nor influential upon, me in any direct way.
lusciousskies@reddit
I read this crazy book about the Stones- Keith and Mick would get their blood replaced every now and then
lidabmob@reddit
It’s thought to be an urban legend. I don’t think they ever did that. I’ve heard claims they did it to avoid drug testing or something like that after they got busted in a French chateau
VirusOrganic4456@reddit
That's a myth. Believable, though.

heffel77@reddit
Keef is greatest/boomer gen. He was born right before Hitler started the blitz on London. In his book, he describes how his house was hit by a German bomb. They found an unexploded bomb in his crib.
He said that ever since Hitler tried to kill him, he’s felt like he was on borrowed time and he’s lived his life like he was on bonus time because he should have been dead.
He said that is why he’s always been full-on going for it and doing whatever he wants because he’s living a bonus life. It’s kinda like Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders. He claims that he and his brothers all died in the mud in WW1, so he everything else is just icing on the cake.
But yeah, he’s Greatest or at a stretch a Boomer.
justinchina@reddit
This post, and its choice of picture aside, Richards’ autobiography was fantastic!
heffel77@reddit
I completely agree. It’s one of the most unfiltered and honest musician’s autobiography I’ve ever read. The rest all seem ghost written. I believe Keith was actually writing it. It has to many turns of phrase and details about stuff Keith would know.
__Chet__@reddit
i’m sure his bomb stories are fucking nonsense, also. i mean come one.
heffel77@reddit
Have you read his autobiography? He doesn’t hold back the truth when he even talks about embarrassing things. It’s a very well-regarded book. It happened to plenty of people. I don’t know why he would lie about it. It doesn’t make him sound cool. His mom’s place got bombed in the blitz. It’s not an outlandish story.
People claim he got his all blood switched to kick heroin and snorted his dad’s ashes. There are a lot more crazy stories than that. I’m sure they factchecked him to some degree. It wouldn’t be hard to find if his mom’s flat got bombed.
SubMikeD@reddit
I love how even in your edit you prove that you're wrong, but insist that you're right haha. He was born in 1943, he's not a boomer.
heffel77@reddit
If there is a micro gen between silent and boomer, name it but when I looked up what generation would 1943 belong too, the google machine said boomer but it is also generally considered ‘45. So take it up with google.. or sociologists in general.
Free_Interaction9475@reddit
The term I've always heard is 'war baby'. My parents were born in '42. During the war. A different little sub group of pre-boomers, so to speak. The Boomer label refers to after war is over and society's need to rebuild and increase the population because so many lives were lost. So, war babies grew up with early memories of bombings and scary war planes flying overhead. Hiding in bomb shelters etc. Typical boomers did not have those experiences... they grew up in peace.
Huindekmi@reddit
He’s Silent generation, the one that came between Greatest and Boomer.
South-Bank-stroll@reddit
The picture is of the snake. He’s 49, called Gav and off his tits on coke and lager (and a couple of cheeky tequila shots) Owns a record store in Brighton and loves listening to the Adam Buxton podcast on a comedown. He met that bloke down the pub last night, has no idea who he is. Who is he?
MajorHubbub@reddit
YouMustBeJoking888@reddit
Technically, he's a Boomer.
Inside_Category_4727@reddit
How do? He was born in 43.
TheRecognized@reddit
You’re right, he’s actually silent generation
Electronic_Exam_6452@reddit
Technically, he’s not.
MrsEDT@reddit
The Rolling Stones were already old when we grew up. I did not identity with any of them. Cool to listen to, like the beatles but not from our generation.
KCcoffeegeek@reddit
Surely Keith Richard’s isn’t Gen X. He’s like 90 isn’t he? And no to partying. 3 beers and I have a hangover for a day these days. Nope.
mmpjd@reddit
Same here. 52 years old and I can’t drink alcohol anymore. I’m completely happy without it too.
KCcoffeegeek@reddit
I haven’t been a big drinker since high school (overseas with no drinking age so it was out every Friday and Saturday, absolutely wrecked, for the better part of 4 years). I have been a “craft beer enthusiast” for 25-30 years and have a modest collection of some whiskeys and scotches I’ll drink very occasionally. I don’t mind 1 beer once or twice a week and I certainly don’t mind the occasional light buzz if I go to a metal show (Napalm Death and Melvins tomorrow night, Baroness on Sunday night!) and have a few but my interest in getting drunk is less than zero. My gut is wrecked for a Day or two after and it’s just not fun. Since my state legalized recreational, too, having a 5 gummy is more conducive to my lifestyle anyway. Catch a minor buzz, it’s gone in a couple hours, gut hasn’t been attacked, don’t have to pee all night, etc. lol
El_Peregrine@reddit
Melvins / ND will be amazing (Melvins are up there with my favorite shows ever - I think I've seen them between 8-10x). Caught Baroness last week. Enjoy 🖤
KCcoffeegeek@reddit
I’ve known of ND and Melvins for most of my life and just never gotten into either at much of a level so I’m excited to see them.
El_Peregrine@reddit
I’m excited for you! I remember my first Melvins show in 1992… my jaw was on the floor for the whole set; I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. Buzz and Dale are incredible. Cody (second drummer) ain’t bad either.
mmpjd@reddit
The mods issued me a warning for this comment. I don’t understand why lol
kblv-forred@reddit
I sometimes wish I could have a nice craft beer but the heart palpitations and headache? Not worth it. :(
squanchy_Toss@reddit
Turing 56 in a couple months and the Dr. told me to knock it (alcohol) off. Don't miss it a bit and fell like I'm 25 still.
Affectionate_Board32@reddit
Definitely stopped to say the same. Even query why not use one of many GenX artists.
ftaok@reddit
Because our musical tastes are generally acquired and cemented around the age of 13. Musicians are generally in the 30s when they reach their height of fame, so it's not unusual for a specific generation to prefer musicians of the previous generation.
In the case of the Rolling Stones, these guys have had an unusually long duration of relevancy as musicians, so for Gen X folks to enjoy musicians from the Silent Generation, it's not that big of a stretch.
You wouldn't expect a 12 year old Gen-Alpha kid to be listening to music by a Gen-Alpha musician. They would be listening to someone who's 25 and firmly in Gen-Z.
overcomebyfumes@reddit
We watched Sha-Na-Na on TV and my mom listened to "the oldies" station when I was growing up - rockabilly and doo-wop from the 50s and early 60s - so now I listen to a lot of older artists like The Coasters, The Beach Boys, Little Richard, The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddly, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, The Crystals, Eddie Cochran. (And this was in the 70s, a lot of that music wasn't even 20 years old then.)
When I was in high school, that was the age of 92.3 FM KROK WXRK and they played all the hard rock hits of the 60s and 70s, so that got me into the Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Joe Walsh, Creedence Clearwater, etc. etc. All of what's called "dad rock" now. At the same time, I'm being bombarded with 80's pop, rap, punk rock, heavy metal, thrash metal, new wave, goth, and early industrial.
I listened to it all. Still do. Throw in some songs that my grandmother sang to me when I was a 'lil one, and I've got a 3000+ song playlist that goes from Lee Morse to Run the Jewels and everything in between.
I think what cemented for me in musical taste was listen to fucking everything.
islandcatman@reddit
A lot of bands I listen to in the 80's -90's had members that were only a few years older than me. That was the time we still had lots of small music venues and could go see shows any night of the week. As I got a little older, I was the same age as the bands that were playing. This was going on in the alt/punk scene and in the Jazz scene. (I'm a music nerd) I wouldn't have picked K.R. as the poster boy of GenX party. I don't know who i would pick, maybe the jackass guys. That Stevo dude or whatever partied pretty f'n hard.
Affectionate_Board32@reddit
Definitely can't relate at 12-13 we were enjoying rappers still within the age range for GenX. Conversely, I was also enjoy old school R&B that included Al Green + Otis Redding. Total Boomers and beyond my reach but good is good.
But I get your proposal that at 12-13 the folks performing are older. And, I'm definitely open to our musical tastes being solidified around 13 (or cemented as you wrote) publishings or data on the topic. Sounds like a fun read to see how that came about or was realized.
ftaok@reddit
My assertion was based on this article that used data from Spotify. I did some unscientific and highly anecdotal research amongst the people in my life that confirmed the article’s conclusions. Plus there wet a lot of social media discussions regarding this topic.
https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/12/17003076/spotify-data-shows-songs-teens-adult-taste-music

islandcatman@reddit
What does this guy have to do with it?
I've seen the youth party like it's the new millennium.
Why is unbridled self-destruction cool?
I'm still on my OG liver, it kinda works fine. But if I knew how much damage I was doing partying. It think I would have paced myself better. I guess you have to do a "marco-pace" with the drinking. I think the younger generation figured that out.
I did party like the guy above. If I kept at it, I would have needed a liver transplant. Just like Keith. At the age of 40. I stopped a decade ago.
Party like you're going to party again. 🥳

Tbf, that’s because NYE is amateur night. I can party any damn night I please. All the lightweights and weekenders come out for NYE!!
dontlookback76@reddit
Without going into long, drawn out post, I'm an alcoholic Sober 12 years until Dec of '24 when I drank for about 6 weeks over shitty life events and my support systems going down in flames through no one's fault. Back Sober since the end of February. I drank hard. I have a high tolerance, and like other men in my family, I don't get sick or hungover when I drink. I always avoided holidays anywhere. Amateur hour is about right. A bunch of people who don't know their limits and don't drink enough to have a tolerance trying to party like someone else who does it on a normal Wednesday night. I had enough of NYE after working engineering in a Las Vegas strip mega resort for 10 years and another 24/7 facility another 3 years after that. I'm just fine going to bed at 830 pm. on NYE.
heffel77@reddit
I don’t think I’ve made it to midnight in 20yrs minus some NYE concerts I’ve been too. It’s to annoying to watch the once a year drinkers try to keep it going til midnight. It’s just chemistry. There is no way someone who doesn’t drink starts drinking at let’s say dinner at 8-9 and expect to be able to keep riding that buzz until midnight…it ain’t happening.
DisasterTraining5861@reddit
Oh yeah I don’t even go out for NYE lol I’m absolutely a lightweight now and deeply proud of it. I used to say that trying to keep up with Ozzy would be the only thing that would kill me loI I celebrate my sobriety every September and have 5 years to date. My days of partying with rock stars are over but I’m still glad I had them. I never had the chance to party with Ozzy, though. Just to be clear lol

Fortunately never had the multi-day hangover thing. I do, however, have the "more than 2 drinks gives me a hangover" thing.
chinookhooker@reddit
guysmileytom@reddit
That's a bold take and also a weird brag.
Let's be honest, you just weren't aware of all the abuse and suffering that was happening around you. Kids are just more stressed these days because we have social media and can pay attention to all the bad shit that's happening behind the scenes. I'm glad you had a decent childhood, but a lot of kids in the '80s didn't. And as a millennial that grew up around GenXers I can easily say that the lack of parental support and guidance didn't exactly make you guys better.
Chill.
Joenonnamous@reddit
Lighten up. Obviously none of us old folks still party like that. But nothing wrong with thinking we could, if we wanted to. I'm not ready for the nursing home yet.
MrsEDT@reddit
I do not think so. It was fun in my teen and twenties and then you move on to different stages in your life.
Reading books, the classics is my party nowadys.
Bring it on, o yeah Dante baby! Lets get this party started!
strumthebuilding@reddit
In 1999 I was working and had returned to college to get my degree. In the 2010s, however, I partied harder than I had in my teens & early twenties.
auscadtravel@reddit
You have the energy to party? Whats your secret?
3Cogs@reddit
Cocaine and 5 days to recover afterwards?
Joenonnamous@reddit
Maybe once a year, absolutely. Even though we're old lets not think like we're old. We can still party, we just don't want to 99% of the time...
Twinkie_Heart@reddit
No, no one wants the 80s back.
3Cogs@reddit
The era of classic video games and the beginnings of acid house music, why ever not? :-)
trpclshrk@reddit
I’ll give you a break more than anyone else in the comments I see. I’m also disappointed if I’m not in bed by 10, and closer to dead than I am partying anymore. BUT…about 2-3 days a year, sometimes even a couple weeks, I will party like I’m 24 again. Vacation? Drinking for 12 hours a day. When my kids throw a party? I’ll be one of the last people still rocking around 3am. My kids are cool, and throw fun, chill parties 1-2 times a year though.
Joenonnamous@reddit
Same. Don't drink much most of the year and in bed early, by choice. But once or twice a year there will be a situation that merits going apeshit, usually a meetup with old friends. It can be done with careful planning: pace yourself, lower alcohol drinks (like shitty mass market light beer) interspersed with non-alcoholic drinks for hydration, aspirin and one of those hangover-cure drinks before falling asleep. I'll wake up tired but not hungover after drinking more in one night than I normally would in a month.

I went to a NYE party in 1999. It was on the shore of a pond in the woods on private property we did not have permission to enter. About 25 people.
There was a huge tree with a giant rope swing that you had to climb like 50' up to swing from.
We roasted a pig in the ground. We drove a car into the pond.
The local radio station was counting down the top 100 requested songs of the year and at midnight they played Nookie.
I have most definitely not been to a party similar to this since.
t_huddleston@reddit
LOL. I spent NYE of 1999 in a data center hoping everything didn't crash.
skinisblackmetallic@reddit
Anti-climactic new years morning.
heffel77@reddit
I was in the Everglades on a Seminole res with 80k of my best friends watching Phish play until sunrise!!
skinisblackmetallic@reddit
Sounds pungent.
twoturntablesanda@reddit
I'd still rather be in bed by 10. I've got shit to do.
j-endsville@reddit
I’d rather pay rent like it’s 1999.
JJQuantum@reddit
Well Keith Richards certainly isn’t GenX.
airwalker08@reddit
Speak for yourself. I get a headache after 2 drinks.
Dr_Sisyphus_22@reddit
There are so many great pictures of Keith Richards! I’ve never seen this one. Thanks
What an amazing life…if only he could remember it.
DiligentSwordfish922@reddit
Someone still has to show up and TBH we're kind of good at that. Turn up, tune down and drop kick.
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
If by party you mean I like to have a beer once in a while and be in bed by a decent hour, even on the weekends, then yes. I party hard.
yarn_slinger@reddit
I binge Netflix until 2am once in a while…
TDiddy2021@reddit
That snake is gonna die if he gets Keith in its system.
PintoOct24@reddit
I could have used more parental care and love growing up.
Louisiana_sitar_club@reddit
Since when does Smeagol have a pet snake?
FormerCollegeDJ@reddit
Keith Richards partied like that long before most of us were born.
Majestic-Tadpole8458@reddit
GenX hack if you find yourself at a weekend music fest or binger this summer: Minimize drinking alcohol or California sober(cannabis) during early/mid afternoon especially if scorching hot. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water/hop water. Pop an adder-all (secure a small stash…some kid or friend you know is on them) around 7pm if you plan to stay up past midnight. Healthy dinner (nothing fried or greasy) and water before you crash. Sleep in as late as you can. Rinse later and repeat.
This-Bug8771@reddit
Usually leather is comes after the animal has died. This guy figured out to culture it while he’s still alive
WielderOfAphorisms@reddit
🤣💀
DiscountAcrobatic356@reddit
Been there, done that. I’m in bed with a good book.
Ps - 1999 is an alright song but When Doves Cry is a masterpiece imho.
WielderOfAphorisms@reddit
Sometimes it Snows in April.
Takes me out every time.
whatiftheyrewrong@reddit
Yeah, I don’t think so. Everyday I come onto this subreddit someone is complaining about how they just can’t any more.
WielderOfAphorisms@reddit
I cease to can.
WielderOfAphorisms@reddit
If u could go to bed at 6pm I would.
Kind-Dog504@reddit
This whole post is sad and misguided. Someone in their 50s posting a person in their 80s wishing they could party like they were in their 20s
Butterfly_Sky_9885@reddit
Totally. Seems like maybe someone wants to normalize substance abuse.
helluvadame@reddit
I’m usually asleep by 9:30 so it’s a no for me, dog

There's a fine line between staying connected with your youthful self and being the creepy, cringy person desperately trying to prove you haven't lost it.

I’m not sure I’m proud of that.
runningoutofwords@reddit
Is this an AI post, learning how to write like a GenX?
Man, that's going to be a sad lonely bot.
Potential-Dog1551@reddit
I’m partying like it’s 1999 and I’m 50, that means bed by like 9:30 and if partying meant carefully flossing and taking vitamins before bed.
dstarpro@reddit
I didn't grow up with zero parental supervision. Speak for yourself.
archedhighbrow@reddit
Until 8pm, yes!
Dan-68@reddit
I don’t party like I used to.
Craig1974@reddit
Is that Keith Richards? LOL
sasquatchbrokers@reddit
It’s called addiction and the mental gymnastics to call it “partying” is just fucking sad.
stratamaniac@reddit
As long as I’m in bed by 10 PM.
JImagined@reddit
I partied so hard in the 90s that I used up any reserves I might have in the 2020’s. I can go out and have a great time, but it’s non-alcoholic. Frankly I prefer to read a good book though. 😉
Sufficient_Stop8381@reddit
Not me, I quit partying after I got a job with overtime and drug and alcohol testing. I don’t really even miss it.
ace_in_space@reddit
if "partying like it's 1999" means "discreetly hitting my dugout when no one is looking" then yeah, baby, I can still hang.
auslan_planet@reddit
Feels like 1939.
69hornedscorpio@reddit
No party here, a six pack at best. Then I am out for the night.
Familiar-Two2245@reddit

Bucks2174@reddit
Party? I haven’t partied since the mid 80s

Somthing to be proud of... i guess?
