Moving Map/GPS options.

I've started the whole flying game. Not quite touched upon navigation yet but I'd like to take advantage of moving maps from when I'm sent up to go solo. I've been doing the circuit and 12 hours in... so there's no nav been done at the moment.
I see a range of options from Skydemon to Foreflight and I've got two tablets but it seems none of them are actually Cellular. Apparently lack of cellular = no GPS? doh.
I wanted to know whether it would be worth upgrading one of the tablets to a cellular model or buying a GPS reciever? What GPS should i be looking at?
What app would be preferable? SD or FF or something else perhaps....?
I'm UK based and all my flights will be VFR. They may be some bimbling around europe as I'm part of two clubs out there already for when I'm licenced.
I'll be flying a microlight/light sport.

Talk to your flight instructor.
It’s been my experience that student pilots tend to over-rely on gadgets. If you were an instrument pilot, you’d know what fixation is. You’re not, so you need an actual instructor to get your head where it needs to be. It’s not engrossed in a tablet.
Foreflight and other moving maps have some advantages, but they are neither rigorously necessary nor a substitute for actual flying.
I make my students turn off “ownship” until they can prove they can operate without it. There is no excuse for getting lost. GPS can be knocked out locally by one asshole in a ground vehicle doing something his employer doesn’t want.

Just get a cellular iPad and ForeFlight. You don’t even need to have an active cellular subscription

Or, if you want ADS-B In, a non-cellular iPad and a Sentry/Stratus device.

The two options above are the correct two options. You can try Garmin Pilot if you have a high pain tolerance for bad UI.

The term you're looking for is EFB, or electronic flight bag.
