Some people in this post should check out nutritionfacts.org and listen to (or read) How Not To Die. Great resources and I couldn’t feel better and have better health after making some changes.
CrankyDoo@reddit
Yeah, I try not to preach but with a very strict diet (I follow the Pritikin regimen) and a lot of exercise (I run 25 miles a week) I am 55 and do not take any daily medications. It was not always like this. Before changing my diet, in my 30’s and early 40’s I was overweight, had high cholesterol, borderline BP, and GERD so bad that if I didn’t take a daily pill (Nexium) it would feel like someone lit a pack of matches in my stomach. Not everybody has to be a slave to a daily pill regimen, but you have to be willing to sacrifice to avoid it.
Cranky_Hippy@reddit
No pills here either at 54. I don't do all that fancy stuff though; I just follow a vegetarian/pescatarian diet, avoid sugary drinks and so on, and try to exercise daily.
CrankyDoo@reddit
As I tell my daughter, if you don’t overindulge when you are young, you don’t have to be as extreme as I am. I abused the shit out of my body in my 20’s and 30’s, so I pay the price now. I salute those that avoided my path of overindulgence. I wish I had had your discipline when I was younger.
Cranky_Hippy@reddit
Haha, I wish. My body got the hard labor beat down when I was a kid, followed by a rough ten years on the street. After that I've pretty much been the workhorse for my family and have only recently have had a chance to have a break and think about my own wellbeing.
1questions@reddit
Not all medications can be avoided simply by exercising and eating right. Things like low functioning thyroid requires pills and even on the best diet and with lots of exercises you’re not going to avoid medication for it.
CrankyDoo@reddit
You will note that I said “Not EVERYBODY has to be a slave…”. Of course there are unavoidable essential medications. If you are a type 1 diabetic, no diet or exercise plan is going to provide the insulin your pancreas is no longer producing. That does not contradict the fact that our society is consuming massive amounts of medications that could be avoided with lifestyle modifications. And I don’t judge the people that decide not to make those modifications. I get it. I didn’t for several years myself. My message is only to those that want a POTENTIAL alternative to pill boxes loaded with medications.

Maybe try harder?

Wow, that is awesome! I went vegan for a week and felt so good haven’t looked back. I also have just started intermittent fasting with getting more keto, another game changer. The idea of getting into autophagy as long as possible has been really appealing. Cleaning up as much historical abuse I have done is a good motivator. I do need to exercise more though.
easterncockatoo@reddit
It's become a fucking chore
Roofofcar@reddit
Hey, I’m on three of those! Amlodipine for the win. Only one that’s worked for me.
ThumbsUp2323@reddit (OP)
Brought my BP down from 220/170 daily hypertensive crisis to a bit less insane 140/100(ish). My new PCP was literally shocked by my initial reading when I first transferred to her practice.
Wanted to admit me to the ER immediately.
I felt fine, so I went home instead. Smoked some weed. Took the meds (and a dozen others trying to find the right combo).
It's been more than a year od trial and error, and my average medicated BP is now somewhere around 135/90.
Doc says it's "good enough."
Infamous-Topic4752@reddit
I feel like this little story of just trying combos of drugs till it worked is exactly how you wind up in your situation
ThumbsUp2323@reddit (OP)
Not doing that is how you wind up dead.
Infamous-Topic4752@reddit
No, not following doctor orders is how you wind up dead.
Trying random combos of meds is how you fuck yourself up and most likely wind up dead.
angry_old_dude@reddit
Why would you draw the conclusion that they're just trying stuff on their own? The logical conclusion, even in the absence of an explicit statement, is that they're working with their doctors.
Infamous-Topic4752@reddit
By the opening statement of "i used to like taking drugs"
angry_old_dude@reddit
The intent of that comment is that they used like taking recreational drugs. The point being that they used to like taking drugs for fun but now have to take them for health reasons.
Infamous-Topic4752@reddit
Yes, exactly that literally the whole point of my initial comment.
ThumbsUp2323@reddit (OP)
The fuck are you talking about? My primary care physician and support team worked carefully to devise a structured Rx regimen that would keep me alive.
Not sure where you're getting that sort of nonsense from.
angry_old_dude@reddit
It's just plain weird that someone would assume that someone would be doing this on their own without medical supervision.
Infamous-Topic4752@reddit
Lol ok. Your post literally days you used to like taking drugs, how did this happen. You then comment how your dr wanted to get you to er and get you soecific meds/care to which you said fuck it im going home and figuring it out yourself. But sure. Whatever you need to say to justify your bs

Oof! Only thing worse than taking that many is having a ‘second shift’! All my friends know when my phone alarm goes off at 4:30 that it’s time for my ‘antipsychotics’. Makes me feel younger than saying cholesterol and pressure pills.
PoopPant73@reddit
I’m with you! Adderal and Abilfy keep me sane, 1600 mg of Gabapentin keeps my nerve pain down. Gotta take meds every 8 hours and I do swing shift.

I do, but it’s an easy overview, I work in IT/tech for the last 25 years I am good with my LLM usage

55 here, didn’t take a thing until 49 hit. Now I’m up to three, one for BP, one for gout prevention, and one for the ol’ prostate. Plus half a baby dose of Xanax if I’m feeling it. All at night before bed. Have an alarm on my phone named “Pills, baby!” (Parks and rec fans, IYKYK) 😂
angry_old_dude@reddit
I take about the same number of pills between what I take in the morning and at night. None of them are fun drugs.
duck_butter@reddit
I don't take any pills. Though it does look like a 150mg doses of Sertaline sitting in them slots.

What was:
“Sometimes I sleep, sometimes it's not for days The people I meet always go their separate ways Sometimes you tell the day by the bottle that you drink And times when you're alone, well, all you do is think”
Is now:
Sometimes I sleep, sometimes it is four hours a day The people I meet I can’t remember their names Sometimes you tell the day by pills that you take And times when you're alone, you appreciate that shit.
Moist_Rule9623@reddit
Just like weed, it was way more fun when people were telling you not to take them 🙁
Iron_Chic@reddit
Maybe pharmacies should change their look? Only open from 6PM to 1AM, remodeled to look like the basement of a house. Pharmacists dressed in one of those Mexican sweaters, shorts and flip flops. Takes your prescription and goes into the back. Meanwhile, you sit on an old couch in the lobby with some lazy chick you've never met watching reruns of Kung Fu on the TV.
Sir_PressedMemories@reddit
Ah the good old drug rug.
Itchy as hell until broken in. Then the comfiest item you own.
And lets be real, watching your parents get stoned and act like morons has done more to turn kids off drugs than any anti-drug commercial could have ever done.
External-Dude779@reddit
Heard a saying that goes something like.... They told us sex drugs and rock n roll were bad so the first things we did when we left our parents were we had sex, did drugs and listened to rock n roll.
I'm convinced this is a big part of why teen weed use is down. It's readily available, the stigma isn't what it used to be, and their parents do it which is really the most uncool thing ever.
SuperApeOsbourne@reddit
Is that Allopurinol?
ThumbsUp2323@reddit (OP)

I made it to 59 before joining the medication train. Thankfully it's just Crestor and a weekly injection of Mounjaro to deal with T2 diabetes. But I've added a centrum silver and cinnamon and a pro-biotic for gut health. Then there is the exercising and diet changes thrown in for good measure

You won't get a high from a medication that you actually need 😂
I had major surgery and was on one of those patient controlled morphine pumps. For the first two days, I was still freaking miserable. Then by the third day, I started smiling a bit, even giggled some. Immediately, a nurse came in my hospital room and said, "okay, you've had enough of that!" and disconnected my morphine. You don't need it anymore once it starts being fun. Just having symptoms managed is only bringing you closer to a normal baseline.
UpOrDownItsUpToYou@reddit
While your personal experience may have led you to this conclusion, I would bet that millions of people with their own personal experience would disagree
WrongAssumption2480@reddit
Wow! You’re right. I had surgery recently and was on a morphine pump. Nurses can’t push the button for you, but would tell me to whenever they saw the button go green. I had visitors and carried on conversations I still remember and I never felt weird or high. Then they just took it away at discharge and sent me home with nothing for a 15” incision. I wasn’t in pain, but I felt bad and it was a struggle to move for a while. Even home health nurses were appalled I wasn’t given anything. Gradually I felt better but I did miss that morphine pump-just because I could function (kind of) and I slept well.
Wise-Novel-1595@reddit
Not with that attitude. Also, I wish that was true, but it ain’t.
No_Neighborhood_632@reddit
Don't ya just love how you get asked at a Dr. visit, are you taking.... gob-load of long names. I stare blanky back at them and say, I don't know, I didn't do as well in med school as you did. I take a pink round one, an oblong green one and a little football shaped one.
They catch my sarcasm and ask by symptom.
OrangeLoco@reddit

I started some meds for PTSD and bipolar II a while back. Controlled substances. I will never forget the look on the pharmacist's face when I handed them the script the first time.
Straight up movie trope double take. Looked at me, looked at my scripts, looked at me again, eyes like Marcus Allen when he hit a hole in the A gap. Saucer plates.

The more medication they can convince you that you need, the better boat they can buy.
1questions@reddit
You’re right no one really needs any medicine. Cancer isn’t real. High blood pressure isn’t real. Allergies aren’t real. Low functioning thyroids aren’t real. Organ rejection after a transplant isn’t real. Schizophrenia and ADHD aren’t real. It’s all just made up do doctors can buy a big boat. Mind if I ask how old you were when you began taking all these? I'm 55 an take nothing but a gummy vitamin, but my doc is starting to push me in that direction.
ThumbsUp2323@reddit (OP)
It’s been a slow progression over the past decade (I'm 50 now).
A couple of these are psych meds, one specifically for AUD.
The rest are for managing high blood pressure.
Not pictured: an as-needed benzo (Ativan) for PTSD, agoraphobia, and panic disorder, and indomethacin for gout flares when they hit.
The psych side is stable these days, and the gout is mostly under control thanks to lifestyle changes. Still working on getting my blood pressure fully in check.
