What’s something you regularly spend money on that’s feels like a waste?
Posted by Fun_Werewolf_78@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 601 comments
I’m not talking about rent or food. I mean the stuff that makes no sense financially, but you keep buying it because it just adds something to your life.
For me, it’s a Saturday morning flutter. I’ll put a few quid on an accumulator even though I know the odds are terrible. It is not really about the money. It just makes the matches more exciting and adds a bit of buzz to the weekend. My mate does the same with scratch cards. My nan still plays the lottery with the same numbers she picked in the 90s.
What’s your version of that? Subscriptions you do not use? Fancy snacks? Something pointless but you still love it?

Costa coffee every morning before work. It’s £4.45 now for a large latte (which is insane), but I just can’t help but do it! I could easily just make a coffee at work, but it’s not the same!!
aliclang@reddit
Same. Daily on my commute or if I'm WFH I walk round to my local independent where its £3.65 for a regular. Brings me a lot of joy
aliclang@reddit
A lot of people have also "done the maths," unsolicited for me. "Do U know how much you SPEND on that A YEaR that you could SAVE?????" over a 7 day week, I guarantee its about less than half the amount a lot of people spend on alcohol over a 2 day weekend.
desirewrites@reddit
Buy a machine for home. Trust me. I did that and I prefer my home machine than the burnt shit that costa peddles as coffee.
FlissMarie@reddit
I already have one lol. A £1000 DeLonghi one. But this is the problem, I don’t think it tastes as good as the chains? Tried a load of different beans and settings, but it can’t get the milk right and the overall drink is too cold.
FlissMarie@reddit
This is in a Costa at a hospital, bear in mind. Could be cheaper in the high street ones. It’s extortionate but I still need my coffee!
simonjp@reddit
I know going to the little shop is part of the ritual. But try an Aeropress- £30. Then you get the fun of making the coffee yourself, too!
Indigo-Waterfall@reddit
Wow. I hope they’re not charging people in a hospital more! Talk about a captive audience lol
ColbysRevenge@reddit
Hospital shops for sure charge more. Like airport shops
Indigo-Waterfall@reddit
Airport, whatever I don’t care. But hospitals! That’s so wrong haha
RandomHigh@reddit
When you remove weekends and 30 days holiday, that's 213 working days per year, £947.85.
VladamirK@reddit
That would buy you a really nice espresso machine and grinder.
FlissMarie@reddit
Jesus. That’s scary.
WillUsernamesRunOut@reddit
Nah, £861 over a year is fine - that's not a house deposit or anything else meaningful. If you enjoy the coffee its worth it
Ozymandias_99@reddit
It's a holiday in Europe!
PenneTracheotomy@reddit
If you’re scanning your Costa card to collect your beans, you get every 11th drink free, so I think you’re ONLY spending £861.68 which isn’t quite as bad I guess
ClutchCurry@reddit
Bargain in that case
TuckingFypoz@reddit
£861.68 for coffee is insane.
Makkel@reddit
Just to have a point of reference, the ground coffee I buy is £4,5 per bag and I use a bag per week on average, that's 52 weeks, amounting to £234 for the year. You could add maybe £20 or £30 for filters...
CaptainVXR@reddit
£4.45 for a large latte in Costa makes me feel way less guilty about my £3-4 single origin flat whites from slightly pretentious independent coffee shops!
AllahsNutsack@reddit
Wow that's expensive. Do you not have a local independent near you? I've never paid anywhere near that at an independent. At mine it's 3.90 and that is going for the guest coffee.
FlissMarie@reddit
Nope, unfortunately not. No coffee shops anywhere near the hospital 😔
REidson89@reddit
I'm trying to quit Costa and failing miserably.
drummerftw@reddit
Try some nice coffee, it'll cure you of the Costa addiction soon enough ;). Might start a new one though...
TooLittleGravitas@reddit
I got spoiled by having subsidised Costa inside work. £1.35 for a cappuccino. Left work now and still shocked by high street prices.
Reesno33@reddit
Wow, I pay less for a pint down my local.
Outrageous_Shirt_737@reddit
Get yourself a decent coffee maker and make a nice latte at home. I bought a bean to cup machine during lockdown when I was missing my coffee shop coffee and never looked back! I do get a Caffè Nero occasionally though, because I’m near a Nero much more infrequently than Costa, and it’s inside Waterstones so I get to browse in there too ☺️

Any sort of insurance feels like such a scam.
pm_me_your_amphibian@reddit
Agreed. We flooded three times last year, specifically checked our insurance covered us for flooding as we’re near a river.
Oh no we don’t cover that kind of flooding.
Mikeytee1000@reddit
That sounds idiotic, what if your house burns down?
turbo_dude@reddit
if you have a mortgage, you're obliged to have insurance
Mikeytee1000@reddit
Yes, because they’d be liable for the debt otherwise! Come off it man it doesn’t matter whether you’ve paid your mortgage off or not only an idiot would not insure their home and only an idiot would complain about paying for house insurance IMO
turbo_dude@reddit
oh agree about insuring property, but most insurances beyond legally mandated are not worth it, especially car rental insurance.
Mikeytee1000@reddit
Car rental insurance not worth it, what if you totalled it? 😂😂
turbo_dude@reddit
well if you're a bad driver then go for it, last time I rented a car, they wanted to charge more for the insurance than the cost of the rental for the basic 'on top' insurance
Mikeytee1000@reddit
Nothing to do with being a bad driver what if an animal or child stepped out in the road or something? They call them accidents for a reason.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
🤔 I don't know what you mean.
I pay my insurance, I just think it feels like a massive waste of money.
I have had homes and cars my whole life and nothing has ever happened to either to an extent I've wanted to claim on my insurance. I'm careful and clean ans I maintain things properly. 🤷🏼♀️
Please elaborate on why that is idiotic.
Mikeytee1000@reddit
You can be as careful as you like but what if your washing machine spontaneously caught fire and burnt your house down, that’s how Grenfell started?
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Mate...I have said already - I PAY the insurance. It just feels like a waste. Because I'm chucking £? at it annually to (most likely) never use it. I'm in my late 30's and have owned and rented many homes and cars and never had to claim.
I'm telling you my experience. I'm not sure that can be considered idiotic. 🤷🏼♀️
Mikeytee1000@reddit
I’m in my fifties and 12 years ago somebody stole my £40k Audi and burnt it out, it’s the only claim I ever made. Even without that it’s never felt a waste of money to me, I don’t enjoy paying it but I greatly value the peace of mind it brings me. I think you are looking at it through the wrong end of the telescope my friend, but that’s just my opinion.
PenneTracheotomy@reddit
I’m pretty sure the you not enjoying paying and OPs feeling it’s a waste is the same feeling. I don’t think they’re saying that if their house burned down and they made a £100k claim after only paying in £15k that it would still feel like a waste, but I think what you’re both saying is that it feels negative to pay money for something that you get nothing tangible back from for perhaps decades if ever.
I may be wrong, but I just wanted to point out that I think you’re both actually in agreement on this
Mikeytee1000@reddit
I didn’t say it was negative I’ve been arguing that it hold great value for me, no I don’t enjoy paying it as it’s not tangible but i do value it whereas the other person is saying they resent paying it because they’ve never needed to claim on it and doubt they ever will. Well that’s exactly it, you don’t need to until you do.
PenneTracheotomy@reddit
It just seems like you’re confusing them saying “insurance feels like a waste” with “insurance is a waste”
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼✅️✅️✅️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Mikeytee1000@reddit
No I’m not confusing anything with anything
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Gah. My parents had their 4x4 Lexus nicked a few years ago. Just clean gone from the street when they went to go somewhere in the morning. When the police finally tracked it, it was in a shipping container, nearly in Africa.
You speak of peace of mind and quelling anxieties. I just don't worry/think about stuff like this much. Maybe because I have some wiggle room financially? A new washing machine, or a leak isn't going to break the bank. But different strokes and all that. I am happy it makes you feel less anxious.
Mikeytee1000@reddit
And maybe I don’t mind paying it because I’m so well off I don’t miss it all so doesn’t feel a waste to me, it’s pocket change.
Greengrass7772@reddit
Have you tried claiming on your house insurance when you needed to adjust the size of your doors? You know, to fit your head through 🙄
Mikeytee1000@reddit
I was being facetious it was a reply to the idiot who commented prior along similar lines
Greengrass7772@reddit
Ah sorry mate, some people are some proper oddballs ain’t they?
Round here they’ll brag and brag about all the money they’ve got but in reality they ain’t got a pot to piss in, houses all remortgaged, cars on lease, Aldi essentials food in the fridge as they’re in hock up to the neck..
Mundo7@reddit
even if it isn’t going to break the bank…that’s literally what insurance is for
Mikeytee1000@reddit
Because insurance equals peace of mind and it comes with a price tag. What you said sounds idiotic to me, sorry, just telling the truth.
missgraceangel@reddit
My friends house burned down with her husband inside over a year ago, insurance didn’t take care of the small possessions that her friends, not the Insurance company rescued. She has yet to be paid out and they have not paid her rent this year she has had to use savings
Mikeytee1000@reddit
My workmate had a fire at home about 2 years ago, their new tumble drier caught fire in their garage and whilst the house didn’t burn down everything within got smoke damaged and most of their possessions needed replacing. They also had to live in a hotel and then in a rented home until theirs was repaired. He told me the whole story as it happened and his insurers were absolutely superb he thought he was better off by the end of it all, although it was a traumatic experience for them. For every bad story there is a good story. I tell you what, once you’ve paid your mortgage off, don’t bother insuring your home and see how easy you sleep at night.
Justboy__@reddit
Your insurance company will probably say it’s your fault and spend years dragging it out trying to find different ways to blame you.
WowSuchName21@reddit
Was about to say, the “insurance is peace of mind” argument would be a hell of a lot better if insurance companies weren’t so shit. Insurance companies when they have to pay out for the service you are quite literally paying for..
I’ve got a friend who works at one and he basically gave us all a cheat sheet of how not to fuck up a claim. They’ll literally listen out for any wording which could omit them from paying any part of a claim.
Mikeytee1000@reddit
They do but that’s better than taking the loss if the worst happens
johimself@reddit
My house has been here for 100 years and hasn't burned down. Its not as common as you think.
I am, of course, joking.
ispcrco@reddit
Only until the thing being insured is damaged or stolen, then insurance is worth every penny.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
A lot of people misunderstanding the OP and/or my reply.
I am not contesting whether it is valuable or not - rather how it FEELS.
ispcrco@reddit
It always FEELS like a scam, until you need it.
xediaj@reddit
I see you're copping some flack for this answer, but I understand and agree it feels like a scam sometimes. House insurance, contents insurance, pet insurance, health insurance, car insurance... I'm definitely relieved to have them when things go wrong, although I can't help but grimace at how much money is being spent for the possibility that something MIGHT happen.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Thank you. Someone with reading comprehension skills 🤪
I insure my home and car - and I have health insurance through work, but I don't insure stuff like phones or laptops, etc. For me they come and go - things will get nicked, or break. It's part of life.
AutoPanda1096@reddit
Doesn't to me.
It's awesome. Allows me to budget. I think some absolutely are poor value. Like, I'm more than happy to underwrite the cost of my phone.
But household stuff... Insurance is fantastic.
Like, renters often tell me that a benefit is not having any sudden surprises. Well that's where insurance comes in.
With my home cover I just tick a few boxes on a website when something goes wrong and someone turns up to fix it. This year, so far, someone came round to change my taps, fix a leaking u bend, replace a light fitting in the ceiling, and replace a heating element in my cooker.
It's obviously not free but I'm turning unknown costs into a known quantity each month. And a fraction of what some poor souls have to pay in rent in my borough.
I'm not sure I could sleep at night without building insurance. Imagine being one incident away from losing everything
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
I've never claimed on any home or car insurance.
Don't you get penalised for claiming so many tiny things like in your examples? Don't you have to pay a cash excess? Then also lose any no claims perks?
I think most of the things you mention I'd just fix myself, from the hardware shop.
Maybe we are thinking about different sorts of insurance 🤔

Dog food.
Obviously my dog needs food but I buy her Canagans which is absurdly expensive for a dog that willingly eats shit in the woods.
Silly-Recognition-25@reddit
I buy my dog insect-based kibble (had all the right proteins and such but better for the environment), then buy fancy toppers that actually smell like meat to get her to eat it 😅. In fairness, she treated the chicken kibble the same.
Jack Russells are a fussy breed.
I also pay dog-sitters because she can't be left alone during the day. It's sooooo expensive, but non optional to both have dog and job.
Codders94@reddit
It’s certainly a challenge having a dog and a job, although we’ve managed to train ours to be happily left at home for the day.
We’ve had her since she was 8 weeks old and leaving her alone for short periods of time, in a sensible and controlled way, started almost immediately. I think the most impactful thing for us was giving her a crate (the door is never shut, she’s never locked in it. It’s just a box with a blanket over the top, she loves it) and having her sleep downstairs from day 1.
Appreciate there’s lots of nuance, and if I was unable to leave mine at home alone then I’d be paying for sitters too!
Silly-Recognition-25@reddit
Mine was 9yrs when she came to me, and reeling from the death of her last owner. We've worked over a year and a half from panic setting in at less than 10min to being able to be alone overnight or up to two hours between walks.
My biggest challenge in training her is I can either keep training her and spend a fortune on dog-sitting in the meantime -- Or I can have a flatmate/dog-sitter for reduced rent but stall training because I can't control the comings and goings of another person. The type of person who can do dog-sitting during the week, is the type to be home a lot.
I'm taking a work break for a few months in just a couple weeks, so I think we'll break through that training wall then.
Codders94@reddit
Firstly, you’re an amazing person for taking on an older dog. We’ve just had to rehome my grandmother’s older dog due to her going into care, it’s lovely to know the dog is off to a warm loving family to see out his retirement.
Training an older dog, especially one that’s had some traumatic experiences, is one hell of a challenge! Good luck & wishing you the best.

Which one? Google suggested Yora but pricing suggests £90 per month which feels a lot.
Silly-Recognition-25@reddit

Silly-Recognition-25@reddit
Lmao, at least my fussy pup won't eat anything gross. I've had her turn up her nose at chicken that's a little off and I'm still tucking into one last sandwich.

Probably the National Lottery or the odd scratch card. I know it’s such a long shot and I almost never win anything, but I still buy them now and then. They treat their staff like shit and their customers like morons - constant pressure on the teenagers they employ to adopt aggressive sales tactics, scheduling their shifts in a way that means they don't have to give breaks, minimal or no guaranteed hours.
They also do a lot of greenwashing. On the shop floor they're telling you their products are unpackaged to help the environment, out back they're sending loads of recyclable plastic to landfill.

Not myself but a couple of close friends either are or have been in the police. They get worked so incredibly hard, two hours late off is basically an early finish, get abuse, spat at, deal with idiots all day long. I know some people don't like the police and they definitely have a few bad apples but the guys I know are really sound great guys who work hard to keep people safe for frankly not enough pay. PerformanceNo8192@reddit
You and me both brother. A significant percentage of all of the money have ever made has gone to some drug. Everything from cigs and alcohol to meth and heroin. It's been a huge waste.
Character-Bid-5089@reddit
I can honestly say ive spent at least half a million quid of heroin when i was addicted. I had a job at the end of the 90s and i checked my pay slips when i got sacked (cos they found out i was on the gear), it was after 5 years and in that time i earned over £250,000 and nearly every penny went on gear cos i had no over heads. My addiction carried on for another 20 years and i was nearly always working as an eletrician so i could easily add another £250,000 to that. Could be more but i try not to think of it. I don't regret it tho, its lead to me becoming the person i am now plus i loved heroin just not the sickness.

You think this is a waste!? Mad. Especially Spotify; probably the best value money I spend every month! £12 for every song in the world!?

cries in musician
04housemat@reddit
I find this a very weird argument. For some reason musicians seem to think they’re underpaid, and that they should be able to make enough to live on from.
But it’s not a job…it’s is a hobby.
You don’t see any other people with hobbies making that argument. I’d fucking love to get paid for riding my bike, my shitty drawings or playing a computer game. But unfortunately they’re not valued enough to be actual work.
theotherquantumjim@reddit
Fucking lol. Equating riding your bike to learning an instrument, dedicating years to songcraft and/or production and honing your performance skills is so breathtakingly offensive I can’t even be bothered to respond. As if the hard work of artists of all flavours doesn’t enrich the lives of millions of people every day. Streaming is the way of the world now and everyone consumes their music like that but let’s not pretend it’s fair for the artists. Because it’s not - it fucking sucks
Mundo7@reddit
why isn’t it fair? you think they’re worth more because you like their music…then donate to them, but there are millions of artists out there, are they all worth more money regardless of skill?
durkheim98@reddit
So you don't understand how Spotify works.
Artists aren’t paid simply by the number of streams their songs achieve, but by the percentage of total streams they account for in each country: not for their work, but how well their work is doing compared with that of a handful of megastars.
If they're willing to forgo a further percentage of their earnings, then there’s Spotify Discovery, which adjusts the app’s algorithm to promote artists who accept a reduced royalty rate.
Mundo7@reddit
I do understand, tell me how that’s different from other industries though? The bigger you are, the more you’re paid right?
durkheim98@reddit
No you don't because you didn't bother to read my comment properly 😂
Mundo7@reddit
Right, you’re one of those guys then.
you can’t tell me I’m wrong because even though it’s compared to “a handful of megastars”, the logic is dorrect
durkheim98@reddit
It's laid out for you as simply as possible. It's not like number of sales equals like for like royalties from said number of sales. It's number of streams and a percentage when leveraged against the percentage of streams from top selling artists.
Spotify deliberately set it up this way to cheat smaller artists out of royalties, while not doing the same to major artists on major labels who would better able to make legal challenges against them.
If this explanation isn't enough for you, the information is a mere click away but I bet you won't bother.
Mundo7@reddit
So it’s set up like this to pay major artists more money because they get vastly more streams than small artists? I get the logic, it’s not rocket science.
What I don’t get is why you think it’s “cheating” smaller Artists out of royalties? Is it just because under the old way of buying records / tapes / cds they would earn more?
durkheim98@reddit
No the royalty distribution system, where revenue is pooled and distributed based on 'market share'. The system is designed to reward artists based on the number of streams they receive as a proportion of total streams on the platform.
That might seem straightforward on paper but it leads to situations where major artists with widespread popularity receive disproportionately higher payouts, even if their music accounts for a smaller percentage of the total revenue.
This is why many people like myself opt for platforms like Bandcamp which awards royalties directly on more of a like for like basis.
The only person who has really been able to investigate and break down the whole system of how Spotify operates in a way that disadvantages smaller, niche artists in favour of major stars: is Liz Pelly who wrote the book 'Mood Machine'.
theotherquantumjim@reddit
I do. I buy their records or their music from Bandcamp. And clearly “all musicians should be paid for the music they make” is an absurd take and in fact a straw man, because it’s not what I said. But there are plenty of talented artists and musicians out there that in the past would have made some money, maybe a living wage, from sales of their music. Many of those artists now get an absolute pittance from streaming revenue. To suggest artists shouldn’t be paid for the work they produce is insane. Should I ask the mechanic to fix my car for free because he likes tinkering with cars? Unhinged
Mundo7@reddit
I have never said artists shouldn't be paid for the work they produce, nice assumption.
You realise time moves on right? Just because you might have made money from a job 40 years ago does not give you a right to make money from it today, technology improves, etc, there are thousands of jobs that might have made you a living wage a long time ago, but now because of improved delivery methods, alternative sources of entertainment, etc, are no longer viable
04housemat@reddit
Just because you opted to dedicated so much effort to something, doesn’t just mean you should get paid for it. I’ve spent thousands of hours riding my bike because I like it, I didn’t just decide I should be paid at the end now I’m quite good.
theotherquantumjim@reddit
Honestly the worst analogy I’ve ever read in my whole life. Wish I didn’t have eyes
WowSuchName21@reddit
This is the exact analogy I’d expect from somebody who says “want to be paid for your music? Be better and if you’re good the free market will pay you appropriately”
tmr89@reddit
So bands are just hobbyists?
04housemat@reddit
Yeah, it’s a hobby they’ve just decided they’d like to get paid for.
theotherquantumjim@reddit
But you’re not listening to hobby musicians on Spotify, they are professionals and should be paid as such.
04housemat@reddit
They’ve decided they want to be professionals. You’re only actually professional when somebody else thinks you’re worth it and gives you enough money to make it a viable career.
theotherquantumjim@reddit
Yes. And should be paid as such. Which doesn’t happen with Spotify. Feels a bit like Groundhog Day this conversation.
04housemat@reddit
“And should be paid as such” Why? Give me another example of something you do just because you like it, and then can demand to be paid a professional wage. That’s a fucking batshit opinion.
theotherquantumjim@reddit
What on earth are you talking about?!? I’m not sure how to lay this out any more clearly. Professional musicians who are mostly signed to labels and have music released on streaming platforms, should be paid as professionals for the music that people like and therefore stream. The current model means that the vast majority of those musicians except the very top tier are not paid fairly for their work which many many people (including you by the sound of it) enjoy.
04housemat@reddit
Being signed to a label and having people like you doesn’t make you a “professional musician”. You’re not a professional until you’re earning enough that it’s your job.
Until that point, you’re a person with a hobby, who hasn’t been successful enough to not have a job. Just because it used to be easier to achieve that level of success, doesn’t mean you’re just entitled to it today because you opted to try to pursue a career with unlikely prospects and shit pay.
Zaruz@reddit
Not a musician, but your argument is very flawed. Want to be paid for riding your bike? Become a stunt rider/youtuber. Drawing? Good artists can make money. Playing a video game? You can be paid if you play competitive or stream.
Not fair to equate your own (presumably) average skills which aren't marketable, to someone spending time and money to write, record, mix and publish music. For the most part hobbyist musicians are also not getting paid and are ok with that; the issue is for professionals who do most of the work and receive a fraction of the generated revenue.
04housemat@reddit
The argument is the same. Want to be paid for your music? Be better and if you’re good, the free market will pay you appropriately. If you’re not…you’re playing gigs at summer fetes on a Sunday when I’m out riding my bike…
durkheim98@reddit
You have zero clue how Spotify operates then.
Artists aren’t paid simply by the number of streams their songs achieve, but by the percentage of total streams they account for in each country: not for their work, but how well their work is doing compared with that of a handful of megastars.
If they're willing to forgo a further percentage of their earnings, then there’s Spotify Discovery, which adjusts the app’s algorithm to promote artists who accept a reduced royalty rate.
aylyffe@reddit
“Be better and if you’re good, the free market will pay you appropriately.” Oh ffs. Tell me you don’t know what you’re talking about without telling me you don’t know what you’re talking about. Source: am married to a professional musician.
04housemat@reddit
That’s exactly how every industry works. If you’re worth more, you get paid more.
PureObsidianUnicorn@reddit
Lmao the free market? Are you mad? You have organisations like the richest in the world, Apple, or the most popular with millions and millions of streams controlled by algorithms. Do you really think those are free market spaces? You totally miss the problem being the vessel, the platforms that music is accessed through. If platforms pay literal pennies for songs, but the only place the vast majority of people listen to and access music, what is the artist to do? If their talents are controlled by computer codes that include or exclude them in playlists should all musicians abandon the art, totally whittling the art form of music down to within a capitalist frame is stupid.
Zaruz@reddit
But the problem being discussed is spotifys impact on musicians income. Good musicians used to get a big share of album/single sales. Spotify disrupted that by massively reducing physical sales & give artists a fraction of what they are worth.
Arguably this is fine for small/upcoming artists with no following; they're getting the ability to reach a wider audience & aren't likely generating any revenue otherwise. But even superstars are being shafted by Spotify & impact of streaming.
Not going to lose any sleep for them; they still have the opportunity to earn a LOT of money for their talent, but it's well known fact that Spotify has made it much harder for musicians.
04housemat@reddit
The market has just changed…that’s all. It happens to industry’s all the time. Invention of the steam engine, the thresher, printing press, Jacquard loom, were likely to see it happen to software developers in the advent of AI. The product is no longer worth what it was, and you need to look at different revenue streams.
rideshotgun@reddit
But you're the only one who benefits from any of this! With music and art, others can experience, enjoy, and find meaning in what someone creates.
Honestly, I find it incredibly sad that you don't seem to place any value on music.
04housemat@reddit
I do place value on music. But in a society that works as it does, it’s not an essential, it’s doesn’t provide economic value, it doesn’t drive productivity and it’s mad to think you should just get paid for providing enjoyment, especially when it’s so subjective. It’s valued at exactly what people think it’s worth.
rideshotgun@reddit
You mentioned that you play video games and ride a bike, right? Well, playing a video game doesn’t generate economic value - so by your logic, why should you pay for the game or the console?
Same with riding a bike - how exactly is that contributing to productivity? So should bikes be free too, right?
04housemat@reddit
I pay for the video game because I like playing the game and need to pay for it or I can’t play - I value that at ~£50. I pay for the console because it’s a technological marvel and was incredibly difficult and expensive to design and build and uses expensive raw materials - I value that at ~£300. I pay for my bike because it was hard to build, used lots of advanced materials, not something I can do myself, the market isn’t flooded with high quality manufacturers and I get a lot of enjoyment out of it - I valued that at ~£4,500 I pay for gig tickets, because I like the DJ, enjoy the atmosphere and like to dance - I value that at ~£30.
A musician can’t just decide to charge more if there isn’t a market to sell it in. Just like a bike builder can’t decide his bikes are worth £30,000 or plumber can’t just decide installing a new radiator is worth £5,000.
Musician can’t just take something they love, and started as a hobby, and decide its value. Unfortunately £0.002 is the going rate and if you can’t sell enough, or make it work through other revenue streams, they’ll need to keep it a hobby and also get a job.
rideshotgun@reddit
That also was the norm in the music industry for decades. We all used to buy have to CDs before streaming came along.
The same applies to music. I assume you don’t have access to a state-of-the-art studio, decades of technical experience, or produce all the music you listen to entirely on your own?
I actually agree with the first part - value can’t be self-assigned. But the real issue here is that platforms like Spotify have taken it upon themselves to determine that £0.002 is the fair rate, without input from the artists. That’s what many people - especially those who genuinely value music and the art behind it - take issue with.
Spotify wouldn’t even have a product to sell without the music created by these artists. The time, talent, and years of dedication it takes to write songs, learn instruments, and master production is enormous - and £0.002 per stream feels like a slap in the face. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say artists deserve a fairer share of the profits they help generate.
04housemat@reddit
That’s the key point, assignment of value. I value the games console and the bike…once upon a time people valued the CD. Not anymore. Bad luck. The romance of being a musician is gone. If people don’t value it, it isn’t worth it. Music is only worth what people are willing to pay for it.
penguin62@reddit
You don't think musician is a job?
04housemat@reddit
It’s not a job if you can’t earn enough to pay your bills because the market doesn’t think your worth it. If you can command a sufficient fee it is, otherwise you’re just a guy playing a guitar in a pub.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Plenty of people get paid for riding their bike, drawing, or playing computer games.
Your complaint seems to be that you're not skilled enough for people to want to pay you specifically to do those things.
PenneTracheotomy@reddit
Have you never heard of live streaming? People absolutely do get paid a LOT of money to play video games and create art and doing exercise. This sounds absolutely like a skill issue.
04housemat@reddit
Yeah, but most people don’t - you’ve either got to be good or lucky. Just like musicians…but they seem to think it’s an entitlement.
PenneTracheotomy@reddit
So a musician that is good is “entitled” for wanting to be paid fairly? Regardless if they’re some nobody making incredibly niche music to a fan base of 150, or Elton John, Kylie Minogue, or Beyoncé?
04housemat@reddit
Yes in exactly the same way that a good software engineer gets paid an order of magnitude more than somebody who does a bit of web development after completing a coding boot camp.
Or a surgeon gets paid more than a junior doctor.
Or an architect more than the labourer on the building site
They all get paid what they’re worth based on their market value.
A-Grey-World@reddit
There are professional sports players (including bike riders), artists and even computer game players these days.
Just because you're not good enough to do it professionally doesn't mean other people aren't.
04housemat@reddit
That’s exactly my point! If the musicians were good enough, and people wanted to pay them for their work because it was worth it…they would be getting paid for it!
Musicians always complain that they should be able to get paid, but you don’t hear amateur footballers as the local Sunday game saying it.
theavodkado@reddit
Have you come across the concept of ‘art’?
04housemat@reddit
Yeah, it’s a hobby with subjective value. If it’s good somebody will pay you for it, if it’s not, it’s just fucking around for fun. You can’t just decide “this is my job I deserve money”
theavodkado@reddit
Why did you bring bike riding and computer gaming into this then?
I don’t know if you’re being wilfully ignorant or what but it is well known that Spotify’s royalty rate is rubbish, even for popular artists whose music is found ‘good’ by very many people.
04housemat@reddit
Yeah, but that’s what free market economics has decided the product is now worth…
Justboy__@reddit
It’s not free market though, it’s one company undercutting everyone an operating at a loss for years until they achieved a monopoly then hiking the prices for customers but keeping the royalties at a pittance for the artist. I don’t know why you keep saying free market?
Also relying on the free market is dumb. Look how that’s worked out for our water industry?
04housemat@reddit
There is google music, YouTube music, tidal…you could even buy 12” or a concert ticket. If the people wanted it, an option that paid more to artists would be provided by the market. The free market literally makes the entire world go round.
Justboy__@reddit
No it doesn’t “The free market” is there to take all the profits until they need governments to bail them out. The free market is just a myth.
04housemat@reddit
This is about a guy paying playing a guitar…not critical infrastructure, public services or the stability of the global economy. The free market absolutely delivers in 99% of cases, and unless you can come up with a better option…that’s the reality of life.
theavodkado@reddit
You yourself seem to be aware that it is worth more than it currently is:
Sounds like you’d happily pay more than £12.
04housemat@reddit
Yeah, I 100% would. But the market obviously doesn’t…otherwise they’d be able to charge more…
theavodkado@reddit
Why would you be willing to spend more?
04housemat@reddit
Because I earn enough and I value it…OP obviously doesn’t as he literally posted it as an example of money that’s a waste. If Spotify could charge £20 a month…or £40, do you honestly think they wouldn’t? The market doesn’t want it.
theavodkado@reddit
Why do you value it? What do you gain from it?
04housemat@reddit
I like to listen to songs.
Harrry-Otter@reddit
If you like say, playing football, if you’re good enough at it a club will start paying you just to play football and get better at football, and who knows maybe one day you start a Champions League final.
Spotify/apple have made it far harder for up and coming musicians to actually make enough money to go professional in music, so they can’t put the same amount of time/money into it and so, less likely to create an album that ends up selling millions.
bacon_cake@reddit
I mean this with all sincerity and genuineness... and? Isn't that just evolution of an art form / product?
The internet has made music more accessible than ever which means more up and coming musicians are able to release their music. The talent pool is far bigger than we used to believe. Back in the day it was harder to come by music, record companies were selective, fewer bands had their share of the fans. But now it's so accessible we've learnt that actually there are loads of people out there who can make good music. That they're not earning millions from it is a testament to how easy it is for musicians to release.
Justboy__@reddit
Wow
hepheastus_87@reddit
Drawing, riding bikes, playing music and playing computer games are actually jobs, though...
nali_cow@reddit
The difference is, you're not sat here saying you willingly pay £10/month to watch people ride their bikes.
You obviously value the output of this "hobby" enough to pay for it, therefore the artists who make that possible for you should get paid.
04housemat@reddit
Yeah, and they do get paid for it…where the library of work is so colossal and the barrier to entry so low, an amount that the free market has decided is appropriate.
penguin62@reddit
Understood, but there are so many bands that I've bought merch and gig tickets for that I probably wouldn't have ever found if not for streaming exposure.

PalmerRabbit78@reddit
The fact we spend so much money on these things but ultimately we own NOTHING, leaves me a bit bitter and it kinda freaks me out. At least in year past, we owned physical copies of everything we wanted. If the internet went down tomorrow, I wouldn’t even have a dvd to watch at home. My boyfriend and I discuss this all the time with streaming our games, if the servers go down, I don’t get to play? Even though I “own” it, I technically don’t.
Extreme-Kangaroo-842@reddit
Back in the 80s and 90s we would have saved so much money with these services. Yes, borrowing off a mate and piracy was a big thing but probably nowhere near as much as it's made out these days. We were buying/renting a hell of a lot.
Movies especially. Your best option was to rent from a video store, and that was anything from £1.50 to £3 for a couple of days. Double that for the equivalent of today. Rent a couple of movies each week and you're talking the equivalent of £25 to £50 a month.
These days my Netflix subscription is what? £7 a month to watch whatever I want, whenever I want.
These subscription services are unbelievable value IMO.

Just a million quid does that - even at a safe investment level that’s £40k a year for doing nothing, most people can live off that, and long term is more like 80k a year.
Ok_Weird_500@reddit
I'd want to buy a house first, for a decent one around London would take most of that. So a lot less to invest for sustained income. Would mean I'd need less to live off. I think 2 or 3 million would be better. But even just owning my own house outright and a bit of savings would mean I could switch to part time work.
I only play the lottery intermittently because I know the odds are crap, and always lucky dip when I do so I don't have to contend with my numbers coming up on weeks I don't play.
Daveddozey@reddit
Most people pay rent out of their 40k a year income. 40k Isn’t great, but it’s not awful either.
Ok_Weird_500@reddit
You can live on it, but it doesn't go far if you live in London though. I guess, if you don't have to work you can live somewhere cheaper.
Daveddozey@reddit
Well yes. Why would you live in one of the most expensive cities on the planet if you weren’t working.
On the other hand if you had a 50k a year job and another 40k a year passive investment that’s like a 90k a year job, which isn’t too shabby even in London.
Ok_Weird_500@reddit
Why live in London? I have loads of friends here, and despite its flaws its a good place. I have one who isn't British and chooses to live here despite having a WFH job and can effectively work from whatever country they want, though for occasional in person business meetings they'd probably want somewhere in Europe at least.
I would at least like enough to not have to worry about work, even if I choose to do some, though I wouldn't want to carry on full time, and not have to worry about further cost of living increases either.
Getting a 50k a year job would be an improvement, having to get one to supplement my lottery winnings wouldn't be the outcome I was looking for.

Your quid pts for a daydream
Aardvark_Man@reddit
I don't go in regularly, but I do when the pot gets to a good size. I don't think I'll get anything, but what I'm buying is dreaming about if I did.
Statistically I'll never win, but statistically someone else will. Never know, you might get lucky and be someone else's someone else.
That said, just know your limits. Don't ever gamble what you can't afford to lose.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
In a way I do the opposite, as the odds are better and once you get into the millions, life is still massively improved whether it is 5, 10 or 100. So a low jackpot makes me more likely to go for it.
spinynorman1846@reddit
Why are the odds better?
No-Low4469@reddit
If you buy millions of tickets then you're guaranteed to win.
AllahsNutsack@reddit
RightMove hits different when there's a 1 in 100,000,000 chance of actually being able to buy the houses.
F1nut92@reddit
I’ve had someone say to me you’re not buying a ticket, you’re buying a dream, which I find very apt to be honest.
NuFenix@reddit
I do one Thunderball a week, with lucky dip, via DD.
My logic is going from 0-1 tickets, my odds of winning increase infinitely. But I get a decreasing chance going from 1-2 tickets, so only do the one.
rockandrollmark@reddit
It also helps if you reframe it as a charitable donation.
sockeyejo@reddit

Me too. Play Postcode Lottery on the same basis
uncle_monty@reddit
I spend less a week on lottery than I would on 20 fags and a single pint if I still smoked and drank - and I used to get through at least that every day. I know I'll probably not win, but it's hardly the worst vice to have.
Turbulent-Pilot-1436@reddit
It’s not a waste though the money goes to a lot of charities so even if you don’t win you’re still making a difference just by playing.
fergie@reddit
I play the lottery in the full knowledge that the odds are against me but the money is going to a good cause, and that although I probably wont win, I definitely wont win if I don't play, and if I did win that would be really nice.
So all in all I think that a few quid on the lottery here and there is not, in fact, a waste of money.
Ragingpoo@reddit
I instantly remembered to buy the lotto as soon as I saw the title.
I 'only' spend £5 per game of euro, only buy when it's somewhat buy (say 50+), only buy on the day, and only lucky dips.
Comfortable-Bug1737@reddit
I'm winning the £156 mill tonight, just saying
Scratch_Careful@reddit
I worked out a couple years ago it averages out about the same as netflix a month and i know i get far more enjoyment out of the daydreams than the dross netflix puts out.
I only play the must be wons and big euromillions. Never win on the euros, not more than a couple quid anyway but the fantasies are ~~less responsible~~ more fun. The must be wons the odds give you a fair chance of winning £70 which help keep the overall cost down.

Coffee in coffee shops. When I use to commute I would get takeout coffee on the way to work every day. Crazy money but I just couldn't organise myself to make it at home.
These days I buy a lot of Japanese gel pens ( such as Uniball One) , especially when brands bring out limited edition colur sets. I put them in a case, admire them, then write in black ink. God knwo whys- it's an addiction!

Japanese pens are great! I have a ton of Uni-Ball Signo DX's in 0.28mm because they're some of the thinnest line-widths available (I know there are smaller ones at 0.25mm from other makers, but didn't have those available to me at the time, and just ended up sticking with the Signo DX 0.28mms because they're such good pens)

They do write beautifully, though - as a lefty, I discovered Uniball Jetstream many years ago (smudge-free and smooth as butter!), and more recently discovered Uniball One, which write just as smoothly, with really vibrant inks. Why I own so many Zebra Mildliners is yet to be determined, they smudge the fuck out of everything, but they're just so pretty!
I justify my own stationery habit (which extends to fountain pen inks, a particularly bizarre choice as a lefty), by claiming that I use them for studying (part-time OU student for fun, and yes, that's also a strange choice).

There are much worse things in life to spend money on than this, don’t worry! Coffee is mandatory for dealing with capitalism, and the gel pens are adorable. I love stationary, especially all the cute little Japanese things. Supporting it is so important I think, as in the west we very much don’t use it too much anymore (in terms of keeping notes in books) so it risks being forgotten…

Try libraries, art cafes, potteries . My favourite American street artist is Claudia de Bianca , I have one of her pieces. In the UK I love Pogo (he's french but works from the UK ) and M-one is pretty good.

Refreshing to see someone on Reddit actually wants to stop.
But at the same time you miss it?
I'll never get it. I miss the friends I lost to drugs. Two school friends became heavy users and killed themselves.
And the ones who aren't dead still feel lost because that's their life now. I video called one during the pandemic as I was reaching out to old mates and it was so uncomfortable. He was stoned out of his head and was just like this empty shell. A shadow of himself. It actually really disturbed me and I still think about it.
I'm all for personal choice, it's just depressing that people want to choose that in their life. I guess we all have our struggles but drugs don't solve them, I see drugs as an excuse to not solve them.
Hope you are happy with your choices whichever path you take :)

Why doesn't the government build sports halls etc?
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I mean, it does, there are government grants and council sports halls all over the country. The lottery is basically a bigger version of a school holding a raffle to get extra equipment.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
It is basically why we went from terrible to towards the top of the Olympic medal table. Lottery funds all sorts of niche sports so they can do it full time.
turbo_dude@reddit
it's a reverse Robin Hood system - we do not need more millionaires
geeered@reddit
I get tickets for big euromillions sometimes (which just reminded to check and see the jackpot's quite big).
Some people use drink and drugs for an escape, go on expensive holidays or regularly spend £10+ on in game purchases in a computer game. I see the lottery as paying for a little bit of escapism - the dreaming what could be if my ticket comes in. £2/£2.50 for a ticket if you're sticking to one a week is pretty cheap.
Though, it's not free of danger, I can see some people do end up using it as a way to avoid putting the effort in to their own lives because their mind is stuck in dreaming about this big win.

Commuting.
My workplace is more than capable of WFH and we did so for years, even heading that way pre-pandemic. Nowadays all the meetings we have and training we do is done via Teams, even if we’re sat in the office together.
But it’s bad optics apparently it WFH so we have to get less done in the office just so it looks better.
rideshotgun@reddit
I find this so disheartening. We had such a rare opportunity during the pandemic to make remote work the norm - to shift how we approach work and genuinely improve work-life balance. But as a society, we pissed it away. Now, more and more companies are pushing people back into offices, not out of necessity, but for the sake of presenteeism. And for what? We know remote work offers greater flexibility, productivity, and overall well-being.
I’m not saying every job or company should be fully remote. It makes sense for businesses to offer office space for those who need or prefer it. But the return to five-day office weeks - just for the sake of it - is so incredibly depressing.
It’s not just employers I hold responsible for this - employees share the blame too. There should have been far more pushback. We had a moment when collective action could’ve reshaped workplace norms, but too many people just accepted the return to the old ways without any resistance.
Mavericks7@reddit
A lot of roles are hybrid.
I don't know anyone who has to go into an "office" 9-5 Monday - Friday.
I'm lucky that we're 99% remote. Even the once a month meeting in the office, depending on child care etc half the team doesn't show up and it ends up on Teams anyway.

It was the city firms that started it when they realised they had massive offices sitting empty that they were paying huge leases on, and they felt the space was being wasted. So, they started pushing employees to come back into the offices to make the space useful again. It kind of started a trend, and there were multiple media articles about it that spread like wildfire across the firms to push them to get employees back in the offices.
No-Low4469@reddit
Is it possible that they'll shift back to WFH when the leases run out? Surely they'd rather save money than not.
It won't apply to me but I wouldn't mind quieter roads, parking etc

Farscape_rocked@reddit
I struggle finding the right balance of cost and enjoyment with coffee.
At the moment I grind beans that go into a filter coffee machine with a cheap manual grinder. It's pretty good and reasonably cheap, but the lure of a £400 grinder is strong!
AllahsNutsack@reddit
How many coffees you drinking a day?
I have a Bambino plus and kingrinder hand grinder and it makes amazing coffee. Better than most coffee shops.
I'd probably not recommend the kingrinder now, but there's lots of good alternatives around that price range.
Set me back about 450 for that setup and it's more than enough imo.
I basically refuse to believe you can get coffee that is a lot better than what I am currently making. You'd almost certainly be paying a lot more money, for absolutely marginal gains in taste.
Farscape_rocked@reddit
I drink a pot a day, if my wife's also working from home then that's two pots a day, which is roughly 35g.
I have a no-brand hand grinder I got my brother from amazon in 2021, which I then got as a hand-me-down when he bought himself a nice electric one.
I've seen this since I posted that which is very tempting.
Ivebeenfurthereven@reddit
I probably don't want to know this, it'll be bad for my wallet.
What is the taste difference between a cheap and expensive grinder?
Farscape_rocked@reddit
Bodum do a £50 coffee bean grinder and it's a chopper. It has a rotating blade, like in a food processor. So the grain size is down to how long you whizz it for and I'm not sure how even it'd be.
A good grinder uses a burr which is adjustable so you can control how big your grinds are. How finely ground it is affects taste, and you want different sizes for different types - espresso wants to be more finely ground than a filter coffee. My hand grinder has this but I'm lazy and using a drill instead of the handle is noisy. I'd rather have this than the £50 bodum grinder though.
Electric burr grinders seem to be £200+, and the one I like is sold by my coffee supplier and is on the commercial end of things. But it looks nice and claims to be silent, and I need something that'll do a coffee pot's worth of coffee and not an espresso worth of coffee. I'll never actually buy it though.
Ivebeenfurthereven@reddit
Touché. Kenwood make a "coffee grinder" attachment for their (excellent) stand mixers - but it is in fact just a tiny food processor with blades. Glad I gave that a miss.
I wonder if the commercial ones ever come up used, could be an interesting restoration project. Probably far too big for home use mind.
DismalPhysicist@reddit
You can get an electric burr grinder for much less than £400! I have a Dualit one that was £80 and is pretty decent.
I'm also pretty sure that making a filter coffee by pouring over the water yourself from a kettle is better than the machines make it, but I have no proof of that...
Farscape_rocked@reddit
Hmmm.... might try that.
Since I posted I found a delonghi one for £50. Might give it a go.

"But emergency_mistake, what if you have an emergency mistake"?
I'll take my chances.
AllahsNutsack@reddit
So you only buy the cheaper third party insurance?
gloomfilter@reddit
It's not really your chances though... the only legally required insurance is third party, so if you cause an accident you have a means of paying for the other person's car. You might be able to cover that yourself, but if you paralyses them hand have to pay for a lifetime of medical care and lost earnings, you probably won't be able to.
If you have more than third party insurance - that's a choice.
Farscape_rocked@reddit
It works both ways. The idiot that crashes into you and writes your car off won't have the cash to replace it. It'd go to court and they'll have to pay you for the value of your car but it'll come at a rate they can afford, dribbling into your bank account for the rest of your life while you have to stump up for another car.

I drive an old shitbox. I could just chuck a bucket of water over it and get the Henry out for the interior. But I love a Saturday morning routine, about once a month, of getting someone to clean it.
It's even more ridiculous as I live adjacent to the footballery bit of Cheshire. So the car wash I go to gets a lot of flash harries in very high end cars. Then there's me, in an ancient old 1-litre car queuing between a Bentley 4x4 and a Ferrari. It's a total waste of money but I can't help myself; I do like a clean shitbox.

For me it used to be music. Specifically written music to be played on bass guitar. We (my wife was similar with saxophone and recorder music) now have boxes of music all over the flat we live in. When we started, we’d play it regularly, but nowadays most of it never sees the light of day. We probably spent several thousand pounds over the years, and it’s now worth about 50 quid, if that.

For me? It's got to be gadgets I swear will revolutionise my productivity. Often. But for a fleeting moment, it feels like I’m buying the edge that’ll shave hours off my week.
Sometimes it’s not about practicality. It’s about giving yourself that little spark of inspiration or joy. And if it adds even a hint of excitement or motivation to your day, maybe it’s not that pointless after all.
