I was not expecting one lesson to be this expensive ... Is this normal?

The end total was 574$ based in Quebec, Canada. Curious what other Canadians might be looking at ...
dumbassretail@reddit
What’s the weekly fuel adjustment? It looks like you’re paying $299/hr for the plane, which is pretty high for a C172. $200-225 is the going rate around here.
But yeah, flying is insanely expensive.
Sand0rf@reddit
Europe wants to have a word, I pay 280 dollar per hour excluding landing fees (Between 5 and 40 dollar depending on the airport)
WeakStorage4786@reddit
Wooow what. Calculated in USD I pay 170$/hr wet for a DA20 incl. instructor. Only have to pay for the landing fees (around 10-20$). Im in Germany.
And thats at a commercial flight school. Clubs would be even cheaper
Sand0rf@reddit
Welcome to The Netherlands... Flying Club/School on a controlled aerodrome. The 280 dollar is for the trainer aircraft (Robin DR400), the Pipers (PA28) are over 300 dollars per hour wet.
Beneficial_Respect_8@reddit
Vliegclub Rotterdam I assume.
Indo_Scythian@reddit
DA20 with an instructor is $175 usd in Vancouver Canada
DarthStrakh@reddit
Bruh I paid 160 wet with the instructor and he didn't charge for ground. I think I got lucky lol.
Palemka91@reddit
I really wish more countries would be like US in that regard (free landings pretty much wherever). I have to pay equivalent of 33 USD per landing on my home airport, it's nuts. We fly out to do our pattern work on other airports where it's free or more reasonable (like $5 per landing), but you always have to return eventually and pay that ridiculously high fee.

alexdwilliams91@reddit
I'm in Miami, Florida and my lessons are about half this 😳 Not sure about Canada prices but that seems expensive...
I fly an analog DA40 with a digital EDM and waas gps, it's $160/hr wet (no extra cost for fuel), no landing fee, instructor is $60/hr. So yeah a 2h lesson block is usually about $260-280 all in with ~1.6h Hobbs time including taxes
Hope you find a place that's a bit cheaper 🙏 Otherwise it might be less expensive to do training in the US
Figit090@reddit
Holy shit that's like OWNING the plane.
Shop around if you can, 😬😳
Significant_Green736@reddit
Oh man much more expensive than in the states! When I was doing PPL a 1.3 hour flight with 2 hrs of instructor would be about $400.

I freaking hate school that advertise “cheaper” rate then slap a ridiculous fuel surcharge in the end. Fuel surcharge is supposed to be temporary and it shouldn’t be 100 CAD!
StephHatake@reddit (OP)
Yea they advertise as affordable I was shocked when I saw the price for one lesson ... Small family operated mid sized ... Very old planes 172s
Mithster18@reddit
How are the facilities? If everything is looked after I couldn't care if the planes are old/new
StephHatake@reddit (OP)
They're okay, very small school little tiny building ... Yea as long as the planes fly and work properly I'm happy 😬
DisregardLogan@reddit
That’s the bare minimum
Friendly-Gur-6736@reddit
When I first started working on my instrument rating in 2008, there was a small fuel surcharge because we'd just gone through $150/barrel oil and the price of fuel kept fluctuating all over the place. But it was maybe $8-10/hr?
By the time I wrapped things up 8 months later they dropped the fuel surcharge as things had returned to normal.
I'd challenge why they're charging so much and if they come up with some pie in the sky answer, take my business elsewhere.
CompetitionLife2793@reddit
Which flight school? Looks a lot like my flight school in Quebec and they are charging super high just for a 172.

holl0918@reddit
Everything here looks acceptable except the fuel. Wtf is up with that? I fly a 190hp IO-360 and only burn ~$45 USD/hr, so what gives?
melintheskies@reddit
This seems high for only 1.3 hours of instruction. At my school that would cost around $300 USD ($160/hr wet 172N, $60 CFI fee). So around $412 CAD. That fuel adjustment is insane, why don't they just charge by the gallon?? Anyway, like everyone else is saying, get your own headset. My first headset was a Kore Aviation headset that you can get for under $200 USD. Wasn't the best, but I still keep them around for friends ever since I upgraded to my beloved Zulu 3's.
JustDaveIII@reddit
I fly/rent in Upstate NY and in SoCal. So costs shown are USD.
A 172 is $188 (NY - Class C) / $150 (SoCal - Class G), gas included, Hobbs time. No landing fee.
Instructor is $70 (NY) / $60 (SoCal).
Headset rental , IIRC, is $5. NY has a sale each year, buy 10 hours get 12 hours.
In NY some CFI's go strictly by the Hobbs time while the newer ones charge up to 0.3 for "pre/post brief" time.
NY has no tax when it's Dual Received. No tax at all in SoCal. No credit card surcharge in either place. NY used to until the law changed in 2024.
Other places in SoCal are about the same. Prices go up vs Airspace type. No other place in NY within 80 miles and is a Class C airport.
Since your airport has landing fees, then I'm guessing it's not a small one so I'd advise looking at other ones.
At many places in the USA there are "Clubs" that offer lessons and are very cheap as their hourly rates are low and many go by Tach (not Hobbs) time for the plane. So the cost is about 35%-40%% lower than what I've shown for NY.
One of the NY Clubs rents the 172 for $125 wet on Tach time with an CFI at $40. Yeah, that's cheap! The only reason I haven't joined one in NY is that I don't fly there much and the 2 Clubs there are much further away from me the the Class C airport.
Yes, the Clubs do have an initiation fee ($300 - $600) and a monthly fee ($40 - $55) but if you are flying 40-80 hours a year taking lessons it's well worth it. Heck, even at 15-20 hours a year it's pretty darn good. Most Clubs let you have a couple of lessons before you have to join.
AggravatingCry7101@reddit
in ontario, for a 1.5 i pay almost that much(looks like you had a 1.3 if im reading this right) at an uncontrolled airport. so its a bit more expensive but not by much, maybe like 20-30 dollars for like.. 18 ish less minutes?
Jwu6@reddit

jwpc59@reddit
To be fair, they are flying Archer II with G1000
0stephan@reddit
Probably would do it. My 141 does $275 wet+instructor for c172S G1000, and $20 less for 172R steam gauge. I don't remember what the multi-engine costs are, not there yet
jwpc59@reddit
I think it’s like $500/hr for multi.
chrisbayley@reddit
I’m paying around 490 an hour for my lessons in Ontario which I thought was still a bit high
Professional_Read413@reddit
Fuel surcharge is insane. Mine was like $20/hr and it still pissed me off.
Gas is probably way more expensive in Canada though, we were paying around $7.50 for 100LL
Uffda-man@reddit
Landing fees and headset rentals? You’re being scammed. That nickel and diming is terrible!!
An instructor is so much per hour. The plane is so much per hour wet. So an hour brief and an hour flight is all you should be paying for.
Find a new school.
Curious-Owl6098@reddit
$574 CAD for 1.3 hours of flight time?!!? So $413. For everything you’re paying $317 an hour for the plane and CFI. Flying is incredibly expensive but this is too much. I would say a rate between $180-$220 an hour for the plane and CFI is a definitely a good deal. $250-$280 more on the expensive side but not unheard of. Anything over $300 unless you’re flying a high performance Airplane like a cirrus is too much. I’d switch schools if you can. Also, I’ve never seen a place charge for a headset rental. Seems excessive.
rhapsodydude@reddit
That’s expensive compared to cheapest options but might be ballpark if you hang out in those rich neighborhoods in eastern township. Main thing like others said the total wet rate is too high for a clapped out 172. Depending on your commute situation you need to do more research around the area. I’ve personally found the north shore to be cheaper. Eastern Ontario may also have good options. Call those schools to find out their rate and waiting time. Also, What really doesn’t help is that “generous” QST isn’t it?
fhfm@reddit
415 freedom units for 1.3 of dual in a 172 is a bit bananas, unless they’re new-ish planes. Landing fee is from the airport, not much you can do there, headset rental is horseshit. If they’re anything like the rentals I’ve seen at any school, they’re maybe $100 brand new, and they’re gonna be 10+ years old.
For comparison, my club does $150/hr Hobbs wet for a 172 and 50/hr for a CFI. That said, I think our newest 172 was of drinking age when Clinton was in office, so there’s that…
StephHatake@reddit (OP)
The planes here are wicked old ... 💀 So not paying for that .... Any headset recommendation? Not sure I want to keep paying 10$ to wear mid headphones mic has touched many lips ...

Lightspeed refurbished. 3 pairs no issues. Great ANR. One friend had a cord issue and they swapped him another set.
fhfm@reddit
What’s your budget? David Clark h10-13s are a great “intro” set. Only problem is you’ll wanna upgrade later on but the damn things won’t quit on you so you can’t justify it! Haha
Between DC, Bose and Lightspeed, you really can’t go wrong. I’d see if anyone around the school has any of the above they’d let you try
Are all the schools in your area that expensive? That’s gonna start to add up real quick, especially when you get into your xc flights
CorkGirl@reddit
I bought my DCs refurbished a few hours in and they're still immaculate. They just keep going! Bose are fancier etc but DC are workhorses. And you can usually sell on after if you decide to move up or give up.
lovelyfeyd@reddit
DC is also has amazing customer service. They refurbished the headset I got secondhand and made them look/sound like new.
CorkGirl@reddit
Oh that's amazing! So used to companies using inbuilt obsolescence. Love them even more if they're trying to keep their products keep going and going.
StephHatake@reddit (OP)
I've heard good things about the Clarks !! Yea I'm not sure if the whole fuel charge is normal... ? The person who made my bill was new to the school so maybe he messed it up?
And with the flying costing this much I'm not sure what my budget might be now might opt for the lower 300-500 range ...
I need to research other schools and see what the heck is happening ...
Thanks for the tips!
fhfm@reddit
Have a look at the lightspeed sierra. At least in the states, they’re around $5-600. Probably the cheapest ANC and Bluetooth headset worth spending your money on. I have A30s, used a buddy’s lightspeeds on a trip a few months ago. I got my Bose’s on a nice discount and still had serious buyers remorse after using his

Flightcom denali anr's are pretty alright as well, been flying with a pair of the yellow ones for the past 2 years, and they're pretty cheap. Anr is decent, idk what the comparison to other models is though.
Tuhks@reddit
For starters I would look up whatever your school is renting you. Mine was charging like $20 to rent out some cheap Rugged Air headset, so I found the same set on eBay for like $60. You can always upgrade but at the very least own the shitty pair you're already using.
AZtLI2020@reddit
My school gives them for each flight free… I didn’t know this was an oddity. They are all DC and I bought my own. But when I bring friends along it’s nice that they just give them for free with the rental. 76’ 172 with 6 pack and g430 for 170 USD wet…
StephHatake@reddit (OP)
Smart suggestion!!! Thank you! I might as well havey own even if they are as shite as the rental ones !
OZZMAN8@reddit
Just buy the cheap crappy black shiny ones. I flew maybe 600 hours in them and they are still my backup pair or wife's pair. These prices are rough. Also make sure you are actually getting 1.3 hours of instruction outside the plane, because they are billing you for it. That's almost an hour and a half, not just a quick debrief. I never charged walkaround and debrief time but understand those that do within reason.
blame_lagg@reddit
A used passive DC headset will work well in a 172.
Imlooloo@reddit
No one is mentioning the $75 in freaking taxes alone? Wow.
StephHatake@reddit (OP)

Dirty_Power@reddit
No, that’s way too much, that’s almost $400/hr for just the plane wet, Most pleated I’ve rented I used to figure it was $300/hr wet.
That $130 fuel charge is crazy. Fuels like $2.50 or less now. That’s like 15 gallons of fuel in a plane that only burn 7-8 per hour
GuppyDriver737@reddit
Man my 172 rental is 155/hr wet.. you are paying waaaayyy too much. Plus the instructor should be about 40/hr.. you should be looking at around a little over 250$ per lesson here in Colorado.
Aviator91990@reddit
Well that’s really expensive where I’m from (US). I pay $175/hr wet and $50/hr for instruction. The weekly fuel adjustment doesn’t make sense to me. I’d think for $199/hr that should be the wet rate of the 172. Unless you are flying a really nice one…one thing I’d say is get yourself your own headset as soon as you decide you are committed. Might as well own your own rather than spending the money on a rental. If there are other schools in the area call around and see what their rates are. Also, if you can fit and the school has them train in a 150. Should be cheaper/hr
T0gaLOCK@reddit
Extremely expensive.... Anything more than $180/hr for a basic steam gauge 172 with a gps is asinine.
juice_jpg@reddit
Usually fuel charge is part of the aircraft fee? And usually the FI time is charged separately, not as part of the aircraft. Look, it’s a weird way of structuring an invoice, probably as a way to try to scoop more cash. But $500 odd in Australia is common and I think we have a similar exchange rate.
bddgfx@reddit
WTF is a “weekly fuel adjustment”? My school charges $180 an hour for a C172S and that includes fuel. $299 is close to Cirrus hourly pricing.
Flying is expensive but jeez this is nuts.
texas1982@reddit
For real. I was renting a 300 hp Cherokee 6 and it was coming out to about $260/hr
texas1982@reddit
300 for a wet 172? What happened to the janky 172s we used to use to learn in? Don't use these schools that attract you with flashy G1000s. Find an FBO with a questionably legal 172 and a CFI that just needs the hours.
NoConsideration6532@reddit
That’s not bad! The same price of the 141 I work at! 275 for a Cessna and 110 for instruction which my school pays the instructors $20 out of is definitely fair! Don’t forgot all the mandatory grounds at $110/hr as well! Oh, that’s in USD btw which from my understanding would be even more than CAD.
There’s a student who’s a little slower to learn here and needs extra hours - up to 60k for private, what a great deal!

mikasjoman@reddit
Have you considered LSA planes? There's a reason PPL is becoming less popular - it's too damn expensive to get the certificate and too expensive to fly when you start flying yourself. After all - this is a hobby and flying at $300 US is just too much for most normal income people to have as a continuous hobby. PPL has a huge drop off both during the training but also after getting the certificate.
I decided against the PPL after talking with my PPL friend. He could count on less than five fingers the time he has actually flown with more than two people over many many years.
LSA certificate here in Sweden is easier medical, about 5k USD for the cert vs PPL at 30-40k USD. And 65-80 USD per hour to fly vs $280 to insane fees for PPL. LSAs have great range, lower stall speed, upward 290km/h speed, 600kg MTOW. And if you upgrade to LAPL to take more passengers, you can use the LSA hours to keep the expensive LAPL/PPL certificate valid - at least here. Also they usually let you shave off half the LAPL/PPL hours if you come with a valid LSA certificate.
All my clubs planes also has emergency ballistic parachutes built in it to the airplane in case of emergency. Also, if you actually decide to buy an airplane, guess which one you'll actually be able to build, buy and afford? ;)

sparky-6603@reddit
There must be a mistake. 'Weekly' fuel adjustment is wrong. Just call some other schools in the area and specifically ask about their surcharges but it won't be that bad.
Over here on the Leftcoast we think we have it bad but it's not that bad (e.g. 203CAD rental for a C172, 39.22CAD fuel surcharge, $3.5 damage waiver $79 cost of flight instructor either in the plane or on the ground).
Userchecksoutskie@reddit
Landing fee ?!
Callsign_Orca@reddit
Flying is expensive but that’s a lot for 1 hour flight in a 172. I pay $125/hr wet $45/hr for ground/flight instruction.
Sad-Hovercraft541@reddit
Is the briefing cost 1.3 hours of ground briefing, or the 1.3 from the instructor fee for the dual flight? Canadian average is 300 per hour on a dual flight for a 172, so assuming the 199 + 100 includes the instructor in the air, you're looking at pretty typical prices. You'll have to go to a lower cost of living area for a little cheaper.
CorkGirl@reddit
Quite expensive. I don't like the fuel surcharge - it's a trick a former school used on us when prices were particularly high. That school failed. Locally in the UK my club charges £229 dual for the C172 which is about $425CAD. They try to keep their prices competitive. Flying is a pricey hobby most places, unfortunately. Cheaper in the US I think? But it's all just burning money.
Rubik4life@reddit
Hello Fellow Quebec pilot. 😊
Lazypilot306@reddit
Da fuck landing fees?
bobobibi520@reddit
I used to instruct out of a flying school in Vancouver. The rates were quite similar to this. We cost somewhere between 280-310 per hour of dual instruction on an old ass 172 from the 1980s. Pricing was fairly similar to all the reputable schools within a 2 hr drive.
The fuel was expensive at our airport. I’ve seen it vary from 1.50$/L to 2.35/L for AVGAS.
Whenever, I took students crosscountry training. We would always try to fill er up at other airports because the gas was so much cheaper(especially when we did transborder) it would knock off like 70-60$ a hour for them.
The 69$ briefing per hour for a class 3/4 instructor seems close to what we were charging too. Make sure you actually got 1.3 total hours of ground instruction on top of your flight time.
This was all pre Covid numbers. So I’m sure inflation has hit hard everywhere.
Honestly, these numbers don’t seem too bad if you’re in some metropolitan area. Shop around if you can. But if you think this is expensive… you don’t want to see the numbers for a twin engine plane. We used to laugh and make a joke that it was a dime a second in fuel. Which was actually cheaper than what it was costing us….
googhacker@reddit
Come over and do your training in the States. I've personally never seen landing fee and normally the airplane rentals are wet. You can get 199 wet for C172.
pewdiepastry@reddit

Sticky_Corvid@reddit
Not at any school I'd be comfortable flying at. This is a normal rate, somewhat higher though. I use to pay for rotary lessons so this is still much cheaper.
pewdiepastry@reddit
1 hour of dual in an R22 costs me about $390 at a reputable school in AZ. Not sure if you're in US or Canada though.
Sticky_Corvid@reddit
Yeah, sounds right. But that for exactly 60 minutes though, my average training flight is anywhere between a 1.3 & a 1.6. So theres thats plus whatever the instructor is charging like $60 an hour probably.

I fly in Ontario and I thought these rates were reasonable. I'm assuming the rental time includes the instructors time, so the fuel surcharge gets it to a comparable rate to what I pay.

Landing fee? I thought GA aircraft generally didn’t have to pay these at most airports.
flightist@reddit
Generally true in the US. This isn’t the US.
Plenty of free airports to land at in Canada too, but not this one, evidently.
heysoundude@reddit
No it isn’t the US. Right now, for the next few years and possibly longer, this Canadian is very happy about that even if I don’t like and didn’t vote for who’s holding the reins.
flightist@reddit
You are getting absolutely and unambiguously getting soaked on that fuel surcharge.
Comfortable-Reveal75@reddit
Well I pay $164 an hour for a p28 g1000 wet and $51 an hour for instructoring
StephHatake@reddit (OP)
What does wet mean? Fuel included?
Stoned_Crab@reddit
Yes
StephHatake@reddit (OP)
Damn why am I getting scammed 😵💫
Comfortable-Reveal75@reddit
No worries my school litterally don’t know how they let us pay that
action_zacked@reddit
You got it! You’ll hear “wet” and “dry” rates
Trubester88@reddit
My flight school was $155 per hour for the plane and $55 per hour for an instructor. You are paying quite a bit. I am partnered with an aircraft, Cessna 182 RG, and my typical fuel cost is $95 per hour… and my instructor is so incredible he doesn’t charge me at all.
InTheGreenTrees@reddit
Everyone’s first thought “get a headset”
dabflies@reddit
$199 should be the price including fuel, I know things are more expensive but should not be $300/hr including gas for a 172
ryancrazy1@reddit
Since fuel prices went up every “wet rate” also has a “fuel surcharge” added…
drain-angel@reddit
Holy shit lol and I thought Vancouver was bad. That's East Asia GA level of pricing.
Get your own headset and find a different school. $100/hr fuel surcharge is nuts......
ryancrazy1@reddit
“Headset rental”. Wow
_-Cleon-_@reddit
At my US school, I pay an hourly rate for the plane, and an hourly rate for the instructor. Gas and headset is included with the plane rental. I don't pay extra for briefings - that's included in the hourly rate for the CFI. And no landing fee at my airport (it's small and untowered).
My usual cost for a \~2 hour lesson is usually between $350 and 400.
What the hell is going on up there in Canuckistan? The "fuel adjustment" is just bats.
Worried-Ebb-1699@reddit
You need to buy your own headset. The wasted money you’re giving them could be used towards your own.
Philly514@reddit
I’m based in Montreal and we charge around $400 wet per hour. Seems like you got fucked on fuel, no way a C172 uses more than 8 gallons..should have been 60-70 max.
andrewclarkson@reddit
That strikes me as being a lot. It's been a while since I was renting but here in the US I'd expect to pay somewhere around $130-$200/hr wet rental(meaning fuel included) for a 172 and around $50-$70/hr for the instructor on top of that. The variability is down to how old of a 172 we're talking about and where in the US we're renting from. (all of that in USD)
I've never seen other fees like that. $100 for a fuel adjustment? They're charging you for a briefing? Those two seem pretty excessive to me, fuel here is normally included with the rental. I can kinda see headset rental although it seems cheap- when I rented they just had loaners they didn't charge for. Landing fee also... I guess if the airport is charging it that's fair but here you usually don't pay landing fees where the aircraft is based.
experimental1212@reddit
Prices vary wildly in different locations for instructor fee, plane rental, and fuel prices. To answer the question you'll have to look at local competitors. You might be paying too much, you might have a great deal, for your area.
DramaticCattleDog@reddit
I pay $210/hour, fuel included, to rent a 172SP with a G1000.
Instructors in my club charge about $75/hour IIRC.
throwaway642246@reddit
Fuckin woooooofff.
I do not know what is normal in Quebec, but man that seems high.
For reference, $574 CAD = $415 USD
My lessons in a “basic” 172, are $174/hr wet, plus my rate of $85.
So you are looking at about $250/hr for (in my opinion) very high quality instruction from an independent flight instructor and I am based in Phoenix, AZ.
Phycosphere@reddit
Even with converting to CAD that’s on the pricier side. Rates at my club are $155 hr wet for a 173 and $75 hr for instructors
If the planes are new 172sp’s it might make sense
bobdole145@reddit
welcome to flying, no that’s not normal it only gets more expensive from here. lol
rFlyingTower@reddit
This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:
The end total was 574$ based in Quebec, Canada. Curious what other Canadians might be looking at ...
