When Did You Last Measure Your Height? (I'm not as tall as I used to be in my 20s)
Posted by cosmic_reflection@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 92 comments
I thought I was just over 5'11.5. In any case that's what I used to be.
But I got a little suspicious about my height after a few people claiming to be 6ft towered over me. So I measured myself and I'm only 5'11 now!
I'm shrinking.
It was a bit of a shock at first but I felt better about myself once I thought 5'11 is actually a real good height to be!
My dad still thinks he's 6ft and I tower over him ha ha!
Blodeuyn13@reddit
Was 5'5" in the 90's, at my last measurement in 2023 I was 5'4".
feelingbutter@reddit
I was 6' when I was 18, and I'll be 6' till the day I die.
Enders-game@reddit
I'm just over 5'10. It's amusing to be taller than guys who claim to be 6ft.
feelingbutter@reddit
haha
jt2ou@reddit
Gravity sucks for all of us.
TheFugitive70@reddit
There are two groups of people that are 5’11”. People who are actually 5’11” and people who are 5’9” claiming to be 5’11”. People who are 5’10” always claim to be 6’ if they lie. I am 6’1”. I measured a few months ago. 73 inches. I get accused of lying about my height, but it’s always people claiming I’m 6’3” or 6’4”. The 5’9” guys claiming to be 6’0” say I’m at least 6’4” and the 5’10” guys insisting I’m 6’3” because they claim they are 6’0”.
maleficentgirl13@reddit
I'm 5'10.5 I always round up to 5'11. No shrinking yet.
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
I was 5’2” in 5th grade and I’m 5’2” now.
Key_Savings9500@reddit
I Had to measure myself, looks like I lost ~1/4” since high school. Down to just over 6’ now. I was about 6’ 3/8” when I graduated. This is a morning measurement. Not too bad for 34 years?
slowtreme@reddit
I just had a life insurance physical, I'm just a humble 5'6" dude and they logged me 5'8" at first. I said no way and made them remeasure with my shoes off and all that.
I'm close to 5'7" now and never measured that tall, including when I was 20s in the military.
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
I am shrinking, but my height is going into my feet, which continue to grow.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
About two months ago at my physical. 6'-4.5" tall. I grew I guess? I was always just 6'4". I even told the lady I don't think she is right but that is what she typed in.
LessIsMore74@reddit
A few years ago, at my annual physical they told me I was an inch shorter. I had them check again, because I'm always 6'4".
Still not really accepting that change. But it's not hurting anyone, so, so what.
WingZombie@reddit
Once a year at the doctor. I got taller after spinal fusion
archedhighbrow@reddit
It's measurement day, now I've got to know.
SquirrelBowl@reddit
Shrunk a half inch so far. I made the assistant re-check
GreatGreenGobbo@reddit
Yep I used to be just over 6' now I'm like 5"11 and a bit.
Sometimes_I_Do_That@reddit
I was the perfect height,.. 5"9' a good ol' 69 inches tall. Last time I was at the doctor's office, I came in at 5"8.5'. The doctor did say that over the course of the day, your height will change. So, I'm sticking with 5"9'
sarah-vdb@reddit
Both of my parents "are" 5'10" but I'm taller than both and have never measured more than 5'7". I'm kind of afraid to measure myself now...
ConsistentAd3157@reddit
I have lost 2 inches last i checked. I was 188cm, now 183cm.
GenXist@reddit
Walked out of a 7-11 yesterday, and the tape next to the door indicated I was 6'2". It says 5'11" on my driver's license. I'm probably 5'10" on a good posture day. I haven't had a good posture day in at least 25 years...
jaxbravesfan@reddit
I hit 6’4” barefoot when I was 14 years old. A couple of years ago, I noticed my younger brother, who is 6’5”, looked taller than me in a picture than he usually did, so at my next doctors visit, I asked them to measure me barefoot. Turns out I am now 6’3”. Was painful to change my drivers license when I got it renewed. My dad has gone from 6’1 1/2” to 6’0” and my mom has gone from 5’9 1/2” to 5’8”. I guess it happens to most of us as we age.
Supreme_Moharn@reddit
I was officialy measured (for military draft) when I was 17. I was 181 centimers back then. I am 180 centimeters now. So that's about the same as you. From 5'11.5'' to 5'11''
Happy to be just slightly under 6' because of all the 'must be at least 6 feet tall' shit you hear nowadays.
JJQuantum@reddit
Yeah I was 5’10” for my entire adult life until maybe 5 or so years ago. More like 5’9 3/4” now.
Alamohermit@reddit
I was 5'11" since the age of 17. About 3 years ago, my kid, who is 5'10", challenged this.
Doctor measured me. I somehow lost an inch between 35 and 47.
EddieIsNotMyRealName@reddit
Make sure you measure yourself in the morning :)
DRG28282828@reddit
I peaked at 5’3 and now I’m 5’2 1/2. I’m almost 58. Everyone I know is shrinking as well.
RenegadeDoughnut@reddit
Sometime between 40 and 53 I went from 165cm to 164cm and I’m still mad about it.
goaway432@reddit
In my 20's I measured 6'2". Thanks to some health issues I now am 6' even. Stupid degenerative disk disease.
Human_Activity5528@reddit
I checked my hight last year. Thought I'd be shorter, but no. I'm 176cm and not 174cm as I used to think. So nothing really changed at 46yo
Comedywriter1@reddit
I was nearly 6’5” when I played basketball in high school.
I reckon I’m 6’4” or 6’3” now. “Beaten down by life,” I say. 😂
Ask-8922@reddit
When I got my drivers license renewed. I’d lost 1/2 inch.
Reader288@reddit
I haven’t measured my height in a while
But my uncle, who’s in his late 60s told me he is shrinking. I know it’s part of aging, but it’s very hard to accept.
whats1more7@reddit
It was in the last year or so and I ‘grew’ half an inch. I’m 54. It’s completely bizarre, but I think it’s because I started doing yoga and my posture has improved significantly. So maybe check your posture!
mossryder@reddit
This. Between 40 and 48 I've 'gained' 1 1/4".
No yoga here though. I did get sober from alcohol in 2018 though?
mossryder@reddit
Once a year. I'm 6'2". Was 6'3/4" when i was 21. I'm 48 now.
GaryNOVA@reddit
I just had my last physical in March.
omibus@reddit
I used to be 6’2” on the nose. Now I have to stand SUPER straight or I end up a diminutive 6’1”.
DaveFoucault@reddit
I have never measured my height; I have both New Zealand and EU passports and DLs and neither of these required you to list your height. My Dad, my wife and my son - who are all considerably taller than me - have both just always told me I am 5’8” so if it ever came up that is what I have always said; but it has never been confirmed by measurement. Maybe I am a bit taller or shorter than that. So I have no way of knowing if I have shrunk in stature.
sporkmanhands@reddit
I was 74” barefoot 30 years ago Now I’m 73” IN SHOES
my neck and back have crinkled a bit
islandcatman@reddit
Spinal compression is real. I shrank about .5in. as well. I also have degenerative disc disease. A life of lifting awkward heavy shit. We do shrink. Decompression feels good, I dont think it reverses anything. I'm am not a doctor.
NotAtAllExciting@reddit
My drivers license has 5ft. I’m sticking with that 🙂
venerablem0m@reddit
Funnily enough, I gained almost two inches in height after seeing a chiropractor for my neuropathy. Wherever he did loosened the ligaments in my spine I assume.
Of course it was right after I ordered my only bespoke freediving suit from Italy. It arrived, and I thought I'd measured wrong... nope! Thankfully neoprene is stretchy, lol.
octopiper93@reddit
Look, I was fully grown at 14- 4’11. I got nowhere to go but down. The only reason I might do it ever again would be to check if I’ve legally become a midget.
pinkcheese12@reddit
I was the tallest girl in my 5th grade class at 5’2” and never grew any taller. Last I measured I was pretty close to 5’1” and currently have 9 year old students taller than me.
atomic_chippie@reddit
I was 5'4, now 5'3.
MiniPoodleLover@reddit
Umm, you should be going to the dr annually, and they would measure your heigh, weight, BP, pulse, blood oxygen, and presumably a panel of blood tests appropriate for your age, health, genetics.
Good luck bud
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
I go annually and they've never measured my height
doglady1342@reddit
I've been to the doctor 3 times this year and they didn't take my height. Two visits were for medical releases to participate in higher risk activities. The first form was just a signature. However, in the second visit I brought a multi-page form wanting very detailed information....and they still didn't measure my height.
I do occasionally measure my height at the gym.. they have a doctor's scale. My height hasn't changed....5" 7-3/4".
MiniPoodleLover@reddit
I meant on health visits
Ok-Description-4640@reddit
I just went last week. They weighed me and asked my height. I said 7’4” and the nurse just wrote (something) on my chart with no reaction. Maybe I really am?
ryamanalinda@reddit
Are or were you really 7 4? That is lover 2 feet taller than me.
paciolionthegulf@reddit
It irritates me so much to be asked how tall I am when it's right there in the chart. I give a ridiculous answer every time. No one ever calls me on it, the doctor never looks at that information, it's just a little performance. Such a waste of time.
That being said, a nurse at a different, unrelated office didn't ask and instead actually measured me this year... then told me my current height. Rude.
MiniPoodleLover@reddit
Interesting. I've been going at least annually since age zero I'm guessing, I've moved several times in my life and had perhaps six different doctors. Never have they not weighed me, measured my height, taken pulse and BP. The blood oxygen is only the last decade or so as far as I can recall.
Old_Goat_Ninja@reddit
I’ve never had a doctor measure my height. They’ll weight me, BP, etc., but height they just asked me.
ryamanalinda@reddit
I have had a doctor measure my height since I saw a pediatrictian
HillbillyEEOLawyer@reddit
Me either. Can’t remember last time my height was checked at the doctor.
_TallOldOne_@reddit
I’ve been going to the same physician for 20 years now. They have never measured my height.
gameraturtle@reddit
My doc’s office assistant asked for my height when I started there and have never asked or measured since. I do get the weight, BP, etc.
Pinchaser71@reddit
I haven’t had it checked but my license says 6’2” which it always has. That said, my son claims to be 6’2” and I he is noticeably taller🤣
Why-did-i-reas-this@reddit
Same. I was just over 6’2 and now I’m probably 6’.0.5”. My daughter is 5’11 and I’m still taller than her though. At least when she’s not wearing heels.
hocfutuis@reddit
Last time my sister was up. For some reason, she was convinced she's shorter than me, and was also trying to give me a different height. You know what siblings are like...Anyway, she's been taller than me since about 1996, and I've been the same height (166cm) since 1995, so I won that one!
Alltheprettydresses@reddit
I shrank, too. From 5'3" to 5'2". I was last measured to qualify for a surgery where BMI is one of the deciding factors. Half an inch shorter made the difference.
73DodgeDart@reddit
I’m 6’2” and as long as I don’t ever measure my height again I will remain 6’2”!
Resident_Lion_@reddit
let me stop you at your first sentence and tell you this: any dude who gives their any height with a decimal point, i automatically deduct the decimal + one full inch because they're definitely lying.
Weeitsabear1@reddit
Haha! Women do the opposite. Always subtracted my height unless I needed to be taller officially.
Weeitsabear1@reddit
I'm a tall woman, at one point (I thought??) 5'9.75" Did some modeling when young, only reason I mention it-I stood at times with groups of women that height or even taller. I was always eye to eye with the ones who were 5'9.5" to 5.10.5" The other day for giggles, I decide to measure myself up against the wall, mark the line and measure. 5'8.5"?! I'm wondering now, was I ever really close to 5.10" or just assumed I was because I was tall? I can't trust the measurements from the dr. office, I've had the gamut from 5'5 to 6'0 (5'.5"-I wondered at the time what interesting stuff that nurse might have been smoking on her break??). This whole getting old thing really sucks.
ryamanalinda@reddit
I'm short. I come from a long line of short people. Im Prolly shrinking. Im 5 2. (My mom was only 4 11) 5 2 Is pretty average for females in my family. The boys average around 5 6. Outsiders that are of ACTUAL average height that get invited to family parties always comment "i feel like a giant and feel unsettled"
Haven't measured. No need to. The only brother who may have measured on a regular basis was a pilot in the military, I guess to make sure he could still reach the rudder pedals.
I'm still gonna be short no matter what.
gameraturtle@reddit
I was 5’8” when I left college. About 10 yrs ago I was down to 5’7”. I’m pretty sure I’ve shrunk a bit more, but I am avoiding a new measurement.
doglady1342@reddit
Don't ignore that. There are things you can do and also medications that can slow bone loss. Lifting weights can build bone density. Generally, GenXers are still young enough to get a handle on this and stop the shrinking in its tracks. We are also old enough that plenty of us have enough bone loss where they could easily break a bone if they fall. I have seen several older people who have taken falls and broken bones, including my mother. She broke her ankle in her early 60s. That injury aged her at least 10 years. She went from being vibrant and energetic to seeming elderly and frail in just weeks.
overmonk@reddit
As a teen, I was close enough to 6’2” that any pair of shoes put me over. At 55, I am barely 6’1”.
Pinepark@reddit
I’m down to 5’9 3/4. I was 5’10 1/2 in HS. I wear my hair in a giant messy bun on the top of my head so people usually think I’m 6 foot tall. lol.
The last time I was measured was at the dentist oddly enough. My primary care doctor never measures me.
No_Dance1739@reddit
Just got measured at work actually. Still 5’11”
basementguerilla@reddit
I was 5'10 and 3/4 at my senior high school physical in 1992. At my physical a few months ago I was 5'10 and 1/4. I also weighed more at age 51 than I did at age 18. I understand getting fatter, but I have to get shorter too?!
muscadon@reddit
I'm still 6'3" as far as I know. I still bang my head on stuff constantly.
Willing-Shape-7643@reddit
My drivers license says I'm 5'2" my doctor says I'm 4' 11" and 3/4.
The-0mega-Man@reddit
Your hair is thinner. Sorry to say.
4jules4je7@reddit
Some nurse told me I was 5’10 in 1995 and I have stayed with that number all my life since. I work in healthcare now and know that we base medication on weight, not height, so who cares? I’m still 5’10 in my shoes so there.
wophi@reddit
Not sure but what blew my mind is I was 6'2", my dad was 6'4" and I am significantly taller than him.
He is 85, I am 51.
Quintipluar@reddit
Fun fact, most of us are taller in the morning by roughly half an inch, give or take.
Throughout the day gravity compresses the cartilage in our spines, making us shorter. But when we lie down to sleep that pressure is relieved, and the spine expands again.
Shortening from age isn't much of a fun fact unfortunately. The loss of vertebrae elasticity and bone density is gradual and permanent.
Phantomtastic@reddit
I've lost over an inch since Jr High.

I've lost abiut 1/2 an inch in height since my 20s. I'm sure I'll lose more as I age. My grandma was 5'5" at my age. When she died, she was just under 5 feet tall.
