Why did a random gas meter reader want to come into my home?
Posted by MeanCartographer9887@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 87 comments
Hello, I don’t know if anyone has any insight but I just wanted to ask as I got quite scared this evening. I’m 20 and was alone in the house today when a man knocked on the door at about 6-6:30 PM. He had a white shirt on that said something about electrics (but was definitely not a recognisable gas company). He didn’t have a clipboard or anything on him, not a badge or lanyard. He asked to come inside to do a gas meter reading.
I immediately felt a bit odd about it because I would assume if a reader wanted to come into the house it would be pre scheduled, so I asked if this was booked as my mother is the home owner and was out of town, he said it was a “random check”. He didn’t ask if I was the homeowner etc and said the meter is in the house, maybe close to the floor somewhere inside. At that point my two labs started barking and he then asked me if I just wanted to leave it. So I said I’m sorry I don’t know where the meter is, at that point he turned around and left. I then texted my mother to ask and she said it sounded really dodgy, our gas meter is outside and she said random checks don’t really happen?
I’m a pretty anxious person and am feeling quite paranoid now especially being in the house tomorrow alone again. I’m going to ask the neighbours if they had the same guy knock on their doors to see if he was going house to house, I’m not sure if that will bring any comfort however because I don’t know if that means it’s legit or not.
So my main questions are:
do random gas meter checks happen?
Are gas meters supposed to be inside?
Would only British Gas or our gas company check the meters or can any company?
Are you supposed to let meter readers into your home?
If it was dodgy, would it be a con or something else?
I hope someone can help. Thank you for reading.
Vertigo_uk123@reddit
Yes random gas meter checks do happen however it’s usually on a whole street basis.
Gas meters can be inside or outside. They are mainly outside though.
The company can vary as meter reading are often contracted out.
Do not let a meter reader into your home. Close and lock the door and go and read the meter for them. Take a photo and show them if they insist on seeing the meter.
All meter readers carry id with a verification phone number. Google the number to check it matches. Ask them to come back in 10 mins whilst you verify their id.
You did right. It sounds dodgy. If he was a distraction burglar then he was likely scared off by your dogs.
Jamericho@reddit
They aren’t just there for readings, they usually have to carry out gas safety checks. They have an obligation to do this every two years.
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
Yeah he didn’t give any ID nor a card to rearrange. It was very random. Thanks for the info, I’m glad I know now!
Jamericho@reddit
Yeah, my rule of thumb is if someone is claiming to be at your property for a reason but is reluctant to prove who they are, they are very unlikely to be legit. I’ve always been in jobs that require speaking to staff that require home visits of some sort - i’ve never met any that were not readily willing to prove who they are to customers. It makes their jobs far easier and customers less combative as it establishes trust off the bat.
As I said, if they were legit, you’ll definitely hear off them in writing.
MyNameIsMrEdd@reddit
I've never had a single inspection in the 8 years I've been in my house. Aside from the smart meter swap about 6 years ago, but that was part and parcel I'm sure.
noddyneddy@reddit
I have t had one. In the 24 years I lived here
Have_Other_Accounts@reddit
So, you did
MyNameIsMrEdd@reddit
It's certainly not every 2 years, and that was something I asked for myself. Not like a routine inspection by anyone
Ill_Cheetah_1991@reddit
Yes - every 2 years
been here for over 10 years any no-one has come to do a reading
however, some years ago I was living ina house that I had owned for many years - but circumstances meant that I was suddenly not home very much
hence energy usage dropped greatly
suddenly that HAD to do a compulsory meter reading "for safety reasons" as they need to be done every 2 years
funny that
he did mine - didn;t do any of the neighbours whose houses had been built at the same time and had also never had their meters read!!!
Jamericho@reddit
I worked for metering for a major supplier for a decade and there wasn’t a “usage monitoring” process. There was a discrepancy process for key metering but that was to make sure the meter hadn’t gone void. (Older Key meters can very commonly stop working during power cuts - they go blank which disables the cut off for non-topping up). I’ve never heard of any process at my former company for checking up on old credit meters usage dropping. Not saying whichever supplier you are with didn’t have something on their system to flag up meter readings dropping, but I know the one I was at definitely didn’t.
Snooker1471@reddit
My other half is on their vulnerable register for BG if it matters. She as the named bill payer gets letters fairly regularly when she hasn't been buying a lot of credit (She has pre pay gas). She has actually been getting a tad annoyed about how incesant they have been in the last year. 2nd point they changed our electric meter to smart. Claiming it was end of life or whatever. Fine - she didn't want a smart meter but she relented as they wanted £150 for a non smart meter. After the smart meter was installed we were called away to a family emergency which resulted in us not being here for 2 months. This seemed to trigget BG as they not only sent letter saying our new meter needed inspected but they were not able to gain acesss as we were away lol - This went on with people turning up to the door and being informed over the ring doorbell that we had already sorted it with the "office" (Daughter was calling in collecting our mail and we had dealt with the fact that we could not be present to let engineer in. this happened like 3 times in 2 months with even more forcefull letters from BG insisting that we let them in....... When we got back we quickly arranged for the engineer to come in and do his inspection - He was audibly fuming, He said as much, His words "What are they playing at, This meter is brand new and is absolutely fine, There is NOTHING wrong with it". It's pretty obvious that they thought we were on the fiddle and the new install was some effort to combat this lol - In some ways it's a bit insulting...I can only imagine it is due to her being vulnerable that it triggers some sort of "They are not using enough" warning. Funny enough when they found a ileagle grow down the road from us they were bypassing the meter and seemingly had been for a couple of years...according to the landlord/owner...but yet the supplier hadn't hassled them in the same manner that they hassled us lol...if only they had checked a dozen doors to the right of us they may have hit the fraud "jackpot".
Rchambo1990@reddit
Point number 2 about gas meters.. depending on the age of the house as well, a lot of houses (probably pre 80s ish) have their gas meters inside in a cupboard along with the DNO head and meters for the electric. 1980s onwards they started putting them outside in the white enclosures
tobotic@reddit
Ours was originally outside, but after an extension wad built by the previous owners, that part of the outside became the garage. Then after we did a garage conversion, it became just a room.
Fruitpicker15@reddit
They'll charge you to move it back outside if they find out.
tobotic@reddit
We had the meters replaced with smart meters a few months ago, so I assume they figured it out at the time.
paunnn@reddit
Only medium pressure gas is not allowed inside. You're fine.
animalwitch@reddit
Yeah ours is under the stairs. We also just ping a picture of it to the gas company, haven't had someone come and check for years.
Rchambo1990@reddit
I’m on pay as you go, last person who came to look at my meter was 6 years ago because I knocked it with a bit of timber while renovating the living room 😂
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
So if it was legit then most likely my neighbours will have received a visit too? I’ll check with them tomorrow to find out. I wish I had thought to ask for ID or to phone the company but I just didn’t as I was caught off guard and he left pretty quickly after the dogs were barking so I didn’t get the chance to properly figure it out. Thank you so much for answering, I’ll definitely take that advice forward.
TheCarrot007@reddit
No. The days of doing a whole street are long gone. They do the jobs they are scheduled which means much driving between them.
MrMotorcycle94@reddit
I had a random knock on the door this morning at 8am to check my gas meter. I told them where it is and he checked his phone and said it would be in my kitchen. Took them to where I thought it would be and they completed their check. They where in my house for less than 2 minutes.

Hot_Lie5935@reddit
Hey OP, to answer at least some of your questions: - gas meter readings are often taken at seemingly random intervals - gas meters are usually external but sometimes they can be located on the rear or side of the property - providers often employ contractors to actually attend and read the meters to you can see all sorts of company names (they should still have and display ID though)
Meta-Fox@reddit
Please take this as friendly advice rather than an attack:
Never let anyone into your home without first verifying who they are. I'm a guy and I wouldn't think twice about asking to see some ID and at least phoning the company in question (after finding out the contact details myself) to verify that they are who they say they are.
There are far too many horror stories of people having their houses robbed and whatnot as a result of some lowlife masquerading as an official just to 'case the joint', as it were.
The chances are low, don't don't me wrong, but not zero. And complacency is the killer of common sense.
Hot_Lie5935@reddit
I’m not offended and it’s good advice in general. BUT the fact you’ve heard horror stories about people being broken into following confidence tricksters etc speaks more of the prevalences of social media than it does ten actual risk of such instances. Think about it: someone gets burgled - back in the day it might make the weekly published local paper; these days, if there’s even a slightly interesting angle it’ll be propagated over various social media sites. Repeatedly. Fear serves no one.
warriorscot@reddit
You are thinking about it in a slightly risky way, the chance of someone knocking on your door and asking for entry and it being for nefarious purposes is actually pretty low... because it is an uncommon event in 2025 for someone to do that at all.
However if you look it from the perspective of the people that present themselves at properties seeking to gain entry how many are doing so for a nefarious purpose it is much much higher. And of course a 100% of people that break into homes or surveill homes prior to breaking in by deception do so by deception!
Given how rare it is now for meter readings as it is largely no longer a thing for electricity and increasingly water and the regulations generally mean gas meters should be outside if someone is seeking entry the risk that it isn't on the level is actually getting on to be fairly high and if you know you don't have an indoor meter and someone asks to check it.... well you know exactly what's going on.
We are now at the point where if someone does do this the correct position is "sorry you haven't made an appointment, please have your customer services contact me to arrange an appropriate time" and shutting the door.
Meta-Fox@reddit
That's fair, and I won't deny that I have the same misgivings about social media perpetuating fear unnecessarily.
That being said, best practice will always win. As I previously eluded to, the chance is never zero. I'd rather err on the side of caution than take that risk every time, especially considering my suggestion isn't particularly arduous to implement.
Though, I will also admit that I currently live in a...let's call it 'unsavoury' area at this moment in time. I'm not arrogant enough to presume that my current feelings aren't at least a little biased as a result.
As you said, fear serves no one. But a healthy dose of caution serves all. At least that's my take on this particular subject.
Stay safe Internet stranger! =)
Hot_Lie5935@reddit
Again, all fair points. I suspect my perspective is somewhat warped by a previous career which, as a side element, involved managing the physical security arrangements for about 150 properties which were regularly targeted for break-ins, ram raids etc. Essentially, what I had to accept is that you’re only ever as secure as your weakest point; from a domestic perspective - your windows. You can have as many multi-point locks on your windows and doors as you like but if someone is willing to make noise they will get in - hells, I have a spring loaded hole punch I use for joinery work that will shatter any dg window you’d care to press it to.
Security is mostly about making your place less inviting than their next option.
Meta-Fox@reddit
Ain't that the truth with your last statement. Ha ha.
I've done my best to secure my current property (window locks, deadbolts and whatnot), but living on the bottom floor of a small block of flats across the road from a social club that's regularly plagued with altercations (I've had to call the police myself 3 times in the last 2 years due to a ruckus happening a little too close for comfort), there's always that underlying feeling that one day someone might take a chance swing at my street facing door/window.
I decided to install a Ring doorbell along with a small, inexpensive camera in my window that's constantly recording on the off-chance that they A) May deter a thief and B) Will hopefully capture any illicit activities that may happen while I'm out. Though it's a guessing game as I'm also aware that this may inadvertently make me a target, because who installs such devices if they've nothing of value?
Nonetheless, this was a refreshingly enjoyable and interesting conversation! Cheers for the insight from another perspective.
Side question: Knowing now your previous line of work, is there anything that you would recommend people do as a general rule of thumb?
Hot_Lie5935@reddit
Rule of thumb observation: if you’re ever considering buying or renting an end of terrace property - don’t. It will be hit first and it will be hit repeatedly (ease of access and escape is just so much higher than the rest of the street).
As for additional security measures, I’ve already mentioned that windows are the weak point of any property (depressing as it sounds, I’ve lived on an estate in Leeds where neighbouring properties literally had iron bars running vertically across their ground floor windows jail cell style - not something I’d recommend). Don’t make it easy for them - don’t leave your window on vent when you’re not in the house, don’t leave your keys in the window locks or leave the handles unlocked. Don’t leave your valuables on display.
Most thieves are opportunists - don’t get their attention, don’t make it easy.
Meta-Fox@reddit
Sage advice, thank you. Hopefully it benefits some fellow Redditors too!
Unfortunately my current living situation was born out of necessity, not choice, but your comment about end terraces was something I hadn't considered before and makes perfect sense in retrospect. I'm plugging that one away for future reference!
Thanks again for the engaging conversation, it's all too rare online these days and I wholeheartedly appreciate it!
RikB666@reddit
What a wholesome exchange of thoughts. It's only 7.15am and already my day has been made.
dtdink@reddit
And that, in a nutshell, is it. It sounds a bit mercenary, but you just need to be more difficult than the other targets.
It's a bit like that old joke about a group of people being chased by a tiger. You don't have to out-run the tiger, you just have to out-run someone else in the group...
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
Thank you for answering. So him saying the meter is inside was not an accurate assumption (I know he was wrong because it’s outside, but I’m saying if he was a meter reader then saying it is inside is in accurate?) I didn’t feel overly comfortable as I was alone and in my pyjamas at that point. It just felt a bit too late in the day and a bit too random. I almost did let him in until he said it was a random check and at that point I realised it wasn’t essential and may well be a scam
Metric_Mushroom@reddit
If he was genuine he would have shown you his ID
Hot_Lie5935@reddit
Yup. Gas meters are external to mitigate the consequences of a leak from the connections from the main to the meter and from the meter to the house’s supply. That he claimed it was inside the property is suspicious (though he could just be an untrained numpty from a contractor).
Once again: if you’re ever uncomfortable = don’t let them in (this applies to anyone up to and including the police unless they have a warrant).
Grouchy-Nobody3398@reddit
In our street they are all internal, per the regulations when the propertys were built (late 1960's) unless the house has had a front extension when the gas board have insisted it is moved outside in line with the current regulations.

Thanks - you live and learn.

Good to know! See I’m not at all knowledgeable about this stuff so I didn’t know if he would have to be well trained or not to do his job, but the fact he made it seem like he had to come in and then suddenly didn’t want to when my dogs barked definitely made me immediately unsure of him. Perhaps I’m being too judgemental of a guy who isn’t well trained and could be scared of dogs who knows!😂 but better safe than sorry hey. Thank you for your wisdom I appreciate it. I’ve been worried throughout the evening not knowing who to ask. I’ll definitely avoid letting people in going forward!
billybobsparlour@reddit
I wouldn’t let a man I didn’t know in my house where I was alone. You did right.
cloud__19@reddit
Just FYI, and the most important thing is the part about not letting people inside if you're not comfortable, but gas meters absolutely can be inside so that in itself doesn't make any of this suspicious.
cdhr1@reddit
My gas meter is inside my house, under the stairs.
DMC_addict@reddit
Mine is inside my house and my electric is outside, so not always external
cloud__19@reddit
My gas meter is inside.

It sounds like it may have been a thief. Always ask to see Id and close door on them whilst you phone their company to check if you're unsure.
Practice it in your mind, ask them for a card and say 'i will just close door while I check' then phone to check company
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
Thanks for this advice. I definitely need to practice this because I didn’t know what to do at the time.
Ill_Cheetah_1991@reddit
They have to have proper ID
and you have to be able to ring the company and check they are scheduled to be there
if they resist either a request for ID or to wait while you check
ring the POLIC£ immediately
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
Thanks for this advice! I wish I had thought to do this.
EFNich@reddit
They turn up randomly usually, they don't make an appointment.
They all carry ID and will make a point of showing you. You can ring the company and check the ID number and/or name before letting them in.
This doesn't sound like how it usually goes so your spidey senses were probably right!
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
Thanks for answering! That’s good to know. I’ll definitely do that if it happens again
quick_justice@reddit
This will happen because you pay for consumption that you self-report, and accuracy of that should be sometimes verified, to prevent unsavoury characters from scamming.
If you are vehemently against seeing random inspectors, smart meter would help as it takes self reporting away. They are not for everybody of course but that’s one of the pluses they have, along with accurate billing and real time consumption reporting to both you and the provider.
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
Thank you for this advice. I’ll pass it onto my mother to consider! Could well prevent further unease.
thisisgettingdaft@reddit
I have had gas meter men turn up often over the years. My meter is in my cellar. I am probably naive and let them in (and have to awkwardly move stuff to clear a passage to the cellar) and it takes minutes and they leave. Sometimes they wear a uniform or lanyard and sometimes they don't. It is not unusual - or was not but maybe is in the age of smart meters. But if you don't feel safe and don't want to let them in, that is absolutely your right and you are probably more sensible than me in that regard. You are quite within your rights to ask them to leave, ask for ID, ask for a number to call to check they are legit. It is definitely a thing, though so I would not worry too much that he was not genuine.
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
Thanks for answering! I might have been a bit paranoid but it just felt odd for some reason. Yes I’m trying to not think too much about it anymore, if it was the gas man then hopefully it can be read another time and if not then I’m glad he didn’t come in.
Fragile_reddit_mods@reddit
I personally don’t let random people into my home, if you don’t have an appointment then respectfully please leave.

Oddly enough, I had one today. I missed it, and they put a card through the door.
The company was Morrisons: Morrisons Data Services joins M Group Energy: Data-Driven energy solutions
The card said they wanted an electricity meter reading. It gave a link (the one I just gave), so I followed it and gave my reading, along with a photo of the meter. They actually wanted the gas reading, so I completed it.
The thing is, we have a smart meter. However, they are obliged to do a manual check at least every two years.
So it was quite possibly not a scam the OP experienced.
The golden rule is to ask to see identification.
RJT6606@reddit

ConsistentCatch2104@reddit
Our energy company does this once or twice a year. Just taking a reading to make sure the reading you submit are correct.
Although they should probably show some kind of ID or something. I’ve never asked just let them in. They are gone in 2 minutes.
Purple_Pizza_4287@reddit
We had one turn up at our house a month or so ago. Apparently they are meant to check the meter every 2 years.
TheRunnerBean@reddit
My gas meter is in my living room in a cupboard next to the external wall. Remember as a kid meter readings being a much more common thing
shredditorburnit@reddit
Just take my approach.
Doorbell rings.
It's someone I don't know.
They have a few seconds to explain themselves.
Failure to do so to my satisfaction or interest and I tell them to leave and close the door.
External-Piccolo-626@reddit
Yes they will do random gas meter checks, especially if the meter hasn’t been getting read by the owner/tenant and readings updated.
We have the same chap doing it now for 10+ years.
Our meter has just been moved from under the stairs to outside, as more and more will be.
Mina_U290@reddit
You don't have to let anyone into your house that you don't want to for this kind of thing.
I always refuse them unless they make an appointment. They never bother, despite it being a disability issue, so I don't let them in.
ToriaLyons@reddit
I've had the same thing happen - on my own, someone wanting to come in to read the meter.
He was very gracious when I said no - I think that's a sign. I suspect they've been told not to push it when it's a single woman or someone seems unsure.
I didn't recognise the company name either - took a Google. I posted on my local Fb group about it, and they said it was kosher.
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
That makes sense. Asking on a local Facebook group sounds like a good idea! If I have no luck with my neighbours I will definitely try that!

Problem is, checks take time and in my case, he was well gone by the time I felt comfortable enough to let him in!
Shoddy_Story_3514@reddit
Random checks do happen but tend to be less so with smart meters.
The huge red flag for me is no lanyard and not giving his company name or his own name for that matter. But even if he had done you would stil have made the right choice as its easy enough for people to fake credentials.
Difficult_Listen_917@reddit
I had the same thing happen today, had a paper ID that looked printed off a home PC and showing me a screenshot from Offgeb website about standing charges. I told them to fuck off.

Absolutely random people turn up on your door. Probably more familiar to those of us of a certain age though, especially when there were less utility providers to choose from.
Back when I was a kid, it was British Gas and Manweb, and their meter readers wore their uniform and were employed direct.
Nowadays they contract the job out to a third party firm that will not resemble your supplier at all. I think sometimes you might get a card in the post a few days before saying they’ll be in the area and will knock.
The task takes 30 seconds so they are not making appointments and special visits that someone needs to wait in for…that would be an ineffective use of everyone’s time.
The fact that your meter is outside is all you need to tell them if it happens again. It might be that it hadn’t been noticed on the job request and a lot of people do still have inside meters. I have on occassions asked them to wait on doorstep and I’ll go take photos of the meter for them but my meter is in a bedroom and you have to sprawl across a bed awkwardly to get to it.
So yes, it could have been dodgy but also yes, it absolutely could have been legit. You were however right to exercise caution since if they can’t provide official evidence of who they are. If it was legit, they’ll just mark that they couldn’t get the reading and future readings might be estimated for a while.
MeanCartographer9887@reddit (OP)
Thanks for your response! I’ll definitely move forward with caution and will use my new knowledge about my meter if it’s ever contested again! I wish I had the luxury of hindsight in knowing what to say at the time, but either way it’s a good lesson learned.

That sounds like someone was casing the house I'm afraid because you're completely right that that's not how it's done. They've heard that you've got two large dogs though so chances are they've put a big cross by your house, not going to be worth the risk for most burglars. You did the right thing in not letting them in. In future though, avoid telling people that you're alone.
