i might be grandpa simpson shaking my fist at clouds here but not every cool, unique or interesting thing is "iconic". sometimes the are just cool, unique or interesting.
casade7gatos@reddit
So you’re iconoclastic.
worrymon@reddit
I was called that once and it was only hours later that I realized it was meant as an insult.
casade7gatos@reddit
I think of it as mostly positive, but I’m being silly and iRonic here.

Econoclass
casade7gatos@reddit
Got the icon ick.
islandcatman@reddit
Dirty....dirty, dirty dirty 🐈
ialsohaveadobro@reddit
Tolstoi has thundered into the chat
casade7gatos@reddit
Never read him.
GreatGreenGobbo@reddit
Yeah it should be wicked awesome.

Pertinence to GenX - Posts may be removed if they are not pertinent to Generation X in a specific way.
This includes non-specific ramblings, any sort of conspiracy theories that have nothing to do with GenX, or posts about people who happen to be GenX….and that’s it.

Every so often I'll suddenly see a particular word everywhere as though everyone in the world just discovered it and are trying to work it into their dialogue.
For example one day a few years ago everyone started saying "optics" for some reason.
I don't know if it's some kind of mass psychological phenomenon or if it's a social media algorithm thing but I do find it kind of annoying.

I noticed this a few years ago and I think it has to be a social media thing. A Suddenly everyone starts saying “wholesome” and “demure?” Right now “writ large” is making a big comeback.
thumpingcoffee@reddit
I also hate "sent the internet into a frenzy". Probably got 4 upvotes on Reddit
phironuthi@reddit
I believe the word we used was AWESOME! When in fact, everything was not awesome.
GenX-1973-Anhedonia@reddit
Absolutely tired of hearing iconic thrown around for everything. You can add "game-changer" and "generational talent" (mostly used for athletes).
noscrubphilsfans@reddit
"Game-changer" is definitely the one I can't stand.
JtownATX01@reddit
Add POV, especially when 1/2 the people use it incorrectly because they don't understand it's a film term meaning Point Of View...from the camera. It is not a damn picture of yourself
Shibboleeth@reddit
It's the end result of a marketing driven culture. Everything has to become the penultimate superlative.
In the 80s everything was "the New[ |er|est]", the 90s was "Extreme," the 00s was "Classic," (once we got past the 9/11 bobble), the 10s I don't recall because I stopped paying attention to marketing.
But now it's iconic, apparently.
texicali74@reddit
In the 90s, it actually would have been “Xtreme”
kling_klangg@reddit
Definitely agree with iconic/icon. Grail and white whale are currently my most-hated descriptors (I am in a couple vintage/thrift store reddits lol).
JumpyFondant@reddit
I’m sick of “insanely”
slightlyused@reddit
Also, "gate keeping" and "gaslighting" being used wrong and overused.
rangeo@reddit
Yes
And if it's not Iconic it's surreal
rodeler@reddit
Whatever.
TravelerMSY@reddit
Yep. Words get worn out time from people using them inappropriately. Some examples…
Luxury, bespoke, artisanal, iconic, epic…
Careless_Lion_3817@reddit
What does it even mean really?
Ghost-of-Sanity@reddit
Add GOAT to the list. And the fact that it gets used for people who are brand new at whatever they’re doing. Sports/music/movies/etc 🤦🏼♂️
NineInchPythons@reddit
I hate all the words people use these days. Even the normal ones.
SprinklesOriginal150@reddit
I’m not bothered by iconic - yet - but every time someone says “I’m obsessed!” I start to wish my hard of hearing days would arrive sooner.
AdObvious1695@reddit
You’re right, because those things are not iconic:
"Iconic" refers to something or someone that is widely recognized, respected, and representative of a particular culture, time, or group
ialsohaveadobro@reddit
I think at this point it means "emblematic of one's idiosyncratic way of living"
modernistamphibian@reddit
Where are you hearing it? Just asking b/c that's not a word I hear a lot. It's probably more accurately used than "unique" though lol.
ialsohaveadobro@reddit
My gf says it a lot. She's 32
The_World_Is_A_Slum@reddit
I’m fucking sick of “Amazing”. “Iconic” is right up there.
Imnotsureanymore8@reddit
Everything is iconic and slaps
PahzTakesPhotos@reddit
My old person yelling at a cloud thing is how everything is a hack now. "LIFE HACK!! Take your clothes out of the dryer when it stops to avoid wrinkles!"
Stop it already.
But I do agree about everything being "iconic". Some celebrity got dissed and their response to the diss is ICONIC. Some celebrity got a haircut and it is ICONIC.
But t hat's partially my fault for reading celebrity news. Oh- LIFE HACK- don't read news that annoys you!
BandidoCoyote@reddit
Those stupid videos that say “you’re using it wrong” while a finger wags. “Oh, you’ve been using your coffee mug to hold coffee? Turn it over, wrap rubber bands around it, slip a couple forks under the bands, and you have a drying rack for your sponge!” No, that’s an entirely stupid way to dry a sponge. I am using my coffee mug the way it was designed to be used . . . As a mug!
Live-Blacksmith-1402@reddit
I think those people don't know the difference between the definition of 'wrong' and 'different than you'... but WTF do I know, I drink coffee from a mug.
BandidoCoyote@reddit
If they get you watch, they win. So I think they know exactly what they’re doing. But I think they’d draw more views with something like “clever ways to use a coffee mug”
Live-Blacksmith-1402@reddit
I never had tiktok before I got rid of all my social media. I don't watch that shit!
Madeitup75@reddit
Agreed.
I also don’t want to hear/read “toxic” or “red flag” anymore. They just mean “thing I don’t like.”
MaximumJones@reddit
This post is far from iconic. 😎
whatcouchsaid@reddit
And certainly ironic…
dystopiadattopia@reddit
"Epic" is worse
pocketdare@reddit
I'm tired of everyone thinking that everyone else is gaslighting them.
jessek@reddit
It’s one of those words like epic or awesome that are now just to describe mid things normal life. Been going on forever.
69hornedscorpio@reddit
If we all know about the cool unique thing, and it had an impact on us, it is more likely to be iconic
ZuBrain@reddit
... don't you think? A little too....
(Did you hear it?)
unsurewhatiteration@reddit
This is an iconic observation from an iconic generation. I'm sure this will iconically go down in history for later iconic generations to benefit from.
Iconically.
Recon_Figure@reddit
Definitely.
Quintessential is another one I've heard more often.
mid-random@reddit
I tried it, and I think I like it, especially in reference to musical/acting performances, and industrial design.
