Of the two, which is better? Ford or Chevrolet?
Grandemestizo@reddit
Ford and it’s not even close. Nothing Chevy makes is worth a damn except the corvette and that’s mostly a retired dentist’s marital aide. Ford has the Mustang, Ranger, F150, Bronco, and the raptor series. They’re seriously competitive in off road endurance racing, and unless I’m mistaken they’re the only American company to win 24 hours at Le Mans.
nate522@reddit
Man I couldn’t agree more. Every single model Chevy comes out with is literally a disaster in some way shape or form. Don’t even get me started on the ecotec
Primary_Elk5223@reddit
Imo, they are both pretty similar, but Chevy's are easier and cheaper to fix from my experience.
grassesbecut@reddit
Yes, generally speaking, Chevy parts are easier to get. Source: Own a '94 Ford that seems to be made from unobtainium these days... Meanwhile, equivalent GMC and Chevrolet trucks seem to have no issues getting anything they might need.
TwinFrogs@reddit
All American autos are garbage.
04limited@reddit
So many different variables it all depends on what you’re looking for.
Ford makes better trucks but Chevy makes better full size SUVs.
Chevy makes better electric cars but Ford makes a better 4/6 cylinder engines.
Interesting_Bill_456@reddit
What about Fiat/Stellantis?
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
I’m looking for opinions on Ford and Chevrolet.
Interesting_Bill_456@reddit
What's your budget and what class of vehicle do you need?
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
$25K small suv with BSI, sunroof, apple car play
Interesting_Bill_456@reddit
I was in a 2023 Ford Escape rental that was nice and I haven't driven one but I see a lot of people driving Buick Encores around me. You might want to start with those.
1990GMCTRUCK@reddit
New Ford over chevy. Classic Chevy over classic Ford.
slightlyused@reddit
By the car youI like and tickles you and take care of it.
I've been a GM man for 50 years and have never been stranded. I prefer GM styling and torquey motors.
YMMV.
HotmailsInYourArea@reddit
Really depends on the model, and that’s true of all brands. Every manufacturer makes diamonds and lemons, and a lot in between. It’s not so simple as Chevy bad hur dur
jtbis@reddit
Same shit, different buttholes.
Suitable_Boat_8739@reddit
Depends. What are we comparing and what year range are we talking.
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
Not new. Maybe 2019 - 2021
Suitable_Boat_8739@reddit
Well then, getting a car that wasnt abused and with the right history is probalbly more important than ownership. Ideally ypu would buy from a private owner and have it looked at by someone who knows what to look for on a used car. I would still stay away from CVTs and make sure the price is right, it makes no sense to pay 80% the price of a new trax for one thats 5 years old and has 70k or so on the odometer.
Party_Ad_3924@reddit
Trucks 2014 and newer = Ford, standouts are 2015 - 2017 5.0 w/ 6 spd, and 2018+ 2.7L. Trucks older than 2007 = GMT800. GM has gone downhill since AFM and DFM, and currently their 5.3’s have lifter failures, the 6.2L’s have a massive recall for failures, and the 3.0 Duramax while great, has a 150k mi timing belt replacement requirement.
bungy2323@reddit
Ford. Not even close.
SkylineFTW97@reddit
I despise pretty much everything they both make new, but Fords are more infuriating in their bad design IMO.
But if we go back at least 10 years or so, both had good products in some capacity. I've owned trucks from both and while I lean more towards GM there, old Fords aren't bad either. When it comes to their old small car offerings, Ford probably takes the cake there. I used to have a 2013 Ford Focus sedan (5 speed). It was way too heavy for what it was, the MPG was bad for the size, and the MyFordTouch unit was buggy as hell, but as a car, it wasn't bad. It was fairly easy to work on, was reliable enough outside of the infotainment, and it was fun to drive. Meanwhile the Cruze and Sonic weren't as good (unless you made the mistake of getting a DCT Focus). They were slapped together with little care and it shows. And unlike the old Cavaliers, they don't even have the robustness to make up for it. The Cavaliers are like Cockroaches, they're way harder to kill than you'd think at first glance. Even the Cobalts were better there, although not as solid as what came before. Plus the Cobalt had the SS. And the Focus had the ST (as did the Fiesta). So overall for small cars, Ford wins.
I also have another Ford anecdote, the cheapest car I ever bought was a 1999 Ford Taurus I got at auction for $150. It started up and drove off their lot, no major problems. And I barely put any money into that car, I did nothing but basic maintenance items. Still I dailyed that car for a year after my old Mitsubishi Galant got totaled and it wasn't even the car's fault it died. I was driving in the winter, hit a patch of black ice, and ran it into a curb where the transmission got cracked. It wasn't worth it to fix, but I do remember that car fondly. It was ugly, it was slow, but it treated me way better than it had to given what I paid. So it baffles me that they're so bad at making cars now.
Granted I also have a Chevy anecdote. My 1st car was a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500. My grandmother got it from one of her friends who didn't need it. She didn't need it either, but since she knew I was about to get my learner's permit at the time, she gave it to me. It was clapped out and had almost 300,000 miles, but it was free and I was a broke 15 year old. As they say, beggars can't be choosers (plus buying high mileage cars became something I did a lot of down the road, that Silverado isn't even in the top 5 highest mileage cars I've owned, although 1 of them was another GM truck). I put a ton of miles on it as my job at the time was making deliveries for my mom's company (on top of getting paid, she offered to pay for my gas and insurance if I did all her deliveries for her since she really hated doing it herself and I was cheaper than hiring a courier). It went from 278k to 330k in about 2 years. Unfortunately one of the head gaskets went and the transmission started slipping (plus it was 2014 when gas was still kinda pricey), so I sold it and got that Mitsubishi Galant I mentioned before. But it ran better and for longer than anyone would expect given how beat it was. And the guy I sold it to fixed it up and kept driving it. Compare that old LM7 to all the 6.2 failures now.
TL; DR I'm extremely disappointed by both companies because I know they can do better from experience.
doubtsnail@reddit
CHEBBY HOSS but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want a 5.0 10spd f150
NarniaMouse@reddit
What is better: Apples, or Oranges?
The inherent problem with this question, is that both car makers have dozens of vehicles, and over 100 years of car making.
So you're comparing what equals to thousands of variables...by narrowing it down to just their names.
Ensure all the Ford/Chevy arguments back and forth, lol.
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
I’m looking at the small SUVs from both manufacturers. The Escape or the Trax, Trail Blazer.
Mister_Rogers69@reddit
Stay away from the Trax
Research the engine and the model for reliability concerns no matter the brand. The 2.0l ecoboost in the escape is a proven engine with most pain points ironed out over the years, but it’s still not perfect. Sometimes you just get a good or a bad one.
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the advice.
NarniaMouse@reddit
It's still a matter of comparing specific traits about each.
Do you want more leg room? One will have more than the other.
More MPG?
More cargo space?
Shorter or longer wheel base?
Color options?
Transmission options?
Again, a myriad of variables to compare between the two.
Make a list of specifically which things you're looking for out of a vehicle, and then go with the vehicle that ticks the most boxes. But it won't be narrowed down by name.
Good luck :)
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
Thanks Just trying to figure out which would be more reliable. You know, I don’t want to engine to die or the transmission to fail under a 100K miles.
Suitable_Boat_8739@reddit
Just about any new car is very unlikely to fail under 100k miles, even the most ubreliable examples your almost garenteed to make it to 100k. Its really the question of if it will make it to 200k without major repairs.
Tbh if those are the options i would maybe be more tempted by the trax for the cheap option and the escape if you want to spend a good bit more to get a lot more but get a st line or higher, you want the i4. That said, at the price of the escape i would start thinking about a prius.
Legitimate-Fly4797@reddit
Escape 100%
2fast2nick@reddit
I had both, enjoyed both.
Severe-Present2849@reddit
Depends on what era.
Imo Ford has been just about 15% better/more premium throughout most of history until recently.
Laz3r_C@reddit
Both have their pros and cons, both new are considered trash, both old are considered great. It's literally pick your poison.
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
Oh, dear!!! Uh, ok. Of course, I’d like a Toyota or Honda but they are higher in price.
123revival@reddit
We've got a panther platform that is 17 yrs old. It's been ours for 5 years. We paid book value ( 4500 ), and have spent about 1500 in repairs. Plus tires and oil changes. Our cost of ownership has been something like 8500, so about $140 a month. It's got 65,000 miles and a lot of life left in it. I don't think you can get a honda or toyota and have your cost of ownership beat that
Brazenmercury5@reddit
Yeah, but they’ll be multitudes more reliable and hold their value way more. You’re better off spending a little more now than lots more in the future.
Kootsiak@reddit
Both can be great or terrible, depending on the year, model and drivetrain.
I've had a few incredible Chevy/GMC full size trucks that are worked to the bone on a daily basis that were as reliable as a carefully loved Toyota. I've also owned GM products that were constantly having problems.
Essays could be written just about Chevy vs. Ford full size trucks in the 90's, their entire history would need much more.
SuddenLeadership2@reddit
The older fords and chevys will outlast the new ones any day of the week
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
I feel like that about older homes too.
TheBupherNinja@reddit
Depends on what you want.
Upbeat_Experience403@reddit
In the older vehicles I always preferred fords I just thought they were a little easier to work on. On a new vehicle I would probably just flip a coin
Amazing_Farm2563@reddit
Well I was a ford guy till my company sold me a 2009 2500 hd for 1$ I love it it just a work truck which is all I need I'm never getting rid of it
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
Well, congrats on that.
boiyo12@reddit
Both have good cars and absolute turds.
Im more of a ford guy solely because I prefer how ford cars look over chevy.
New_Appointment_9992@reddit
I’d rather push a Ford than drive a Chevy.
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
Alrighty then!
scuba_steve77@reddit
Why not have both I have an ls swapped foxbody. Chevy engines, ford chassis you have the best of both worlds.
jazzdabb@reddit
If a functional infotainment system (CarPlay / Android Auto) with physical buttons where appropriate is important to you then no question Ford.
I’ve owned 4 Chevys and 3 Fords. The Fords were all my best and most trouble free vehicles other than my beautiful Soul Red Mazda 6 (RIP).
VeraLeighC@reddit (OP)
Interesting. Thanks for your response.

Ford > chevy any day. Gm is awful except for the cadillacs and corvette.

They both have some really cool cars, and they both have some major stinkers.

Theyre the same. Ram is just as good as well.
