12 years is enough.

I decided yesterday to hang my keys up for good. I've been a driver for 12 years now, and am done. It's been a rough, and thankless job, and I am tired of crap pay for little gain. It's hell on a body, and hell on a relationship. It was good while it lasted, but it's time to peace out. Keep the rubber side down drivers, and hammer down!!
kakarota@reddit
He'll be back, boys. i give it a month.
But for real, though, best of luck, my guy! I had to leave trucking 2 years ago. But once im done with what im doing, im going back to trucking i miss it every day.
Few-Chemical-5165@reddit
In 23 I had been driving for 31 years. I had to quit to take care of my family. My parents. Dad was dying of cancer, mother of alzheimer's. And I will never go back trucking, because of the way it's turned out, it is gone total dog shit. I mean, yeah, you couldn't bring me back if you paid me a hundred dollars an hour. I still wouldn't do it. $250 an hour. Maybe, but not for crossing the border into the states. That'll never do again
Artyom_33@reddit
Not because he wants to, but because the economy is starting to take a shit & trucking is (almost) recession proof.
Mistermeena@reddit
Just wait until he has to start talking to humans, pissing in toilets, and showering barefoot...
westernmoron756@reddit (OP)
Lol, who knows I might come back after being gone for a bit... I've heard plenty of "I'm done" stories!!š¤£
kakarota@reddit
Yup, plenty of im done stories. I had an old timer tell me when I first started "you got 2 years to quit trucking, past 2 this is the rest of your life" I thought he was just a crazy old man but ohhh man was he right at year 3 I said fuck it and left for 3 months and came running back. Then again, at 5 , I did the same thing after a week. Idk why I keep doing it to myself.
santanzchild@reddit
2-3 years once you get that first job that actually pays. Hard to purposely take a pay cut at that point.
1987genz@reddit
I'm going back to a job that pays really well. You're right though. It's hard to look at other jobs and what they expect from you for WAY less money. Sometimes it's hard to realize how good we got it with such a small investment in "education" if you can call it that! š
Perfect_Opposite2113@reddit
Yeah as soon as I had to deal with people all day on regular basis I appreciated the solitude of driving. I do miss being around people I actually like though.
TheIncredibleMike@reddit
I only lasted 18 months. I'm a Nurse now.
truckitorfuckit@reddit
13 years and counting. The grass ain't always greener on the other side. Its green where you water it. Good luck
Artyom_33@reddit
Brother;
The powers that be are choking & poisoning the water.
truckitorfuckit@reddit
Its a big club and we aint in it. One weird club
Artyom_33@reddit
Correct.
Dispatch & planners are snorting meth off if underage prostitutes while we're getting shit for "not being up early enough to get the 'goods loads".
CEO's are banging their 3rd mistress in their midlife crisis-mobile while on the way to their yachts after complaining "no one wants to be a REAL trucker anymore"
Shippers & receivers treat us like garbage while smoking da Mary Jane in the docks & seemingly loading the cargo by hand, piece by piece.
And don't even get me started on some of our brethren; be them flip-flop jockeys washing their feet in the sinks or the hood rats that act like they're the only person in the truck stop with a gun or the unwashed hilljack's that act like showers are for the proletariat...
Goddammit... I need a new job. Or win the lotto... not even a BIG one, just big enough to not work anymore.
truckitorfuckit@reddit
Who broke your heart bro.
Agreeable-Cat8077@reddit
youre just driving for shit companies
legendarygarlicfarm@reddit
How are you guys still not making good money after over a decade?
forsakensinner92@reddit
I've been driving for 13 years or so, for the past 5 i keep telling my wife "just 5 more years and I'm done driving". I don't know if I can do anything but drive, I've grown a very fond dislike of people and being around them.
scallywagsworld@reddit
Iām a foodservice truck driver and my job is a bit hard but I love it. Youre just soft, got soft hands, maybe you should buy a bag of concrete and harden the fuck up
Oz_The_Explorer@reddit
The fear of never seeing Northern California, Oregon and Washington again, the fear of never passing through Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona, keeps me from quitting.
The fear of never seeing all those beauties again drives me into depression. I can't quit.
Good luck to you š«
yeah-no-yeah-no@reddit
Good for you!! Congrats on making a very very solid life choice.
Iāve been doing this job for 6 months and my mind is blown how ANY one could deal with it more than 2 years.
HowlingWolven@reddit
Somehow Iām at year five or six.
SUPRA239@reddit
Then you need to get with a different company
santanzchild@reddit
If you are still making ctap pay and being trayed like it after 12 years you did something wrong in your career. Better luck in your next chosen field I guess.
westernmoron756@reddit (OP)
I've moved up alot in the industry. Pay in general isn't worth what the field takes from you. My last driving job I was making .85CPM and getting 3500 miles a week. But to not be around family, friends, or just have a life is not worth any amount of money.
santanzchild@reddit
See thats not crap pay. That is pay that you don't consider worth it. I understand the sentiment but the phrasing is misleading.
xDoomKitty@reddit
Yeah $3k a week seems............. above average to me lol
santanzchild@reddit
It's reddit man. These people feed on each other's entitlement. They all seem to think they should make more than the ceo or they are being treated like slaves.
yeah-no-yeah-no@reddit
Uhh hate to break it to you buddy, but truck drivers are literally the modern day slaves
santanzchild@reddit
Yes slaves totally made six figures and owned nice homes and cars.
The fact you feel comfortable making that comparison is disgusting.
yeah-no-yeah-no@reddit
Six figuresā¦which when a trucker says that it means 90-120k, which arenāt that much in todayās economy, man. But keep living in your fantasy of having a kush corporate executives job!
xDoomKitty@reddit
xD shit be cray cray
yeah-no-yeah-no@reddit
Alright, but tell him really truly belittling things this time around, damn yo.
santanzchild@reddit
Truth is truth. Don't blame the industry for you problems.
crudeshag@reddit
Ok
CashWideCock@reddit
Quitter.
binderdriver@reddit
Wish I had been smart enough to realize that when I was at the ten year point....I'm still doing it now at my 40th year......smdh...
yeah-no-yeah-no@reddit
Iām deeply sorryā¦.damnnnn 40 years, you sir have suffered, this I know, you poor soul. Hopefully youāll be reincarnated as a tech-bro that works for a company thatās 100% remote (work from home) have mad benefits and a padded corporate expense account. This is the dream I wish for you, youāve earned it in this lifetime
binderdriver@reddit
Thank you....I think that would be the least I have earned....lol
RKK-Crimsonjade@reddit
I hope you find something fun in your next job. My āco driverāat Roadway express retired from yellow freight in 1976 after 22 years. Then he bought a gas station . Then in 1984 he started back at Roadway till 2006 I think. He still owned the gas station btw and since he was 72 in 2000 he had social security and the teamster were paying him 3k a month and still was make 1.5k a week Retire for sake, donāt be like him selling his farm 10 years ago. Freaking ReTire
welcomehome777@reddit
12 years is a lot longer than many make it. You held in there. Gained life long experience, met a lot of folks, good and bad. You probably pushed yourself like you never have before and learned you could persevere through it all. Made some money and some friends. You did well. Iām 5 years in and have already decided Iām going to do whatever I need to do to be out of this truck at the 10 years mark. Trucking isnāt what it used to be. Your family, health, and sanity is not worth what trucking has to offer now. And thatās just the sad truth. Good luck to you and your future endeavors. God bless!
westernmoron756@reddit (OP)
Thank you much, I have always said I wasn't gonna make this a life long career, but almost did. I'm gonna go back into the culinary field, I was a chef for 4 years before I got my CDL. I hope the best to you as well driver!
bootloops30@reddit
FFS get a roach coach find a place we can park tired of all this crap food out here
Ricemunchr@reddit
i wonāt like when i was 20 i was back and forth about culinary school but decided i didnāt want to take the 20k debt at the time which is very little in tuition standards..
i picked up my cdl earlier this January and plan to become a driver and solely purpose to stack my income to eventually start a restaurant business.
welcomehome777@reddit
Trucking took me from $30k to $80k in 2 years. But also from 40 hour weeks to 60-70 hour weeks gone from home for days/months. Thereās money to be made but at a cost. Your plan is smart, go get the money, save it and dip. PS: went from 180 pounds to 230 pounds as well. Stay out of the truck stops. Especially if you are like me and have no self control.
Ricemunchr@reddit
man iām a sucker for pop and iāve heard thatās the number one killer for drivers lol be heard stories of drivers getting free drinks and snacks based on how much fuel they pumped.
gfinchster@reddit
24 years in and going to semi-retire, have 2 young girls at home and I want to spend the last half of their life with them. Going to take early social security retirement and work something different to make up for the pay drop. Iām sure it will take me a while to adjust to waking up in the same place everyday.
Present-Ambition6309@reddit
Thank you for your service, my family appreciates it. Be well, best of luck in your future endeavors.
It is hell on the body, youāll drop weight fast once out of it a few months. I think trucking has more of a revolving door than most county jails. Take care of you first, always and in everything you do. š«”š«µšÆš¤
ignoreme010101@reddit
Best of luck man, am glad you're leaving of your own choice :)
chico-dust@reddit
If I had to do OTR again I'd be right there with you. Cause ain't no way I can do that 9 weeks out 3 days off crap again.
JankyMark@reddit
Yeah otr aināt it nomore
Kkalemauser@reddit
Good luck on your next adventures.
Been driving trucks for 20 years. Got fed up at the 12 year mark. Came back to it.
Try local work.
hera_the_destroyer@reddit
Take that experience and go get a cushy city or state job.
