Imagine you're based in DFW but want to be based in SLC.
Let's say 5 openings in SLC become available.
10 pilots around the company put in their bids for those 5 openings.
If you are the lowest in seniority in that group (least amount of time with company), then you are 10 out of 10 bidding for 5 slots. You will not be awarded SLC.
However, if you are #5 or better in that pool of people who want SLC, then you will be awarded SLC.

That's how it works. There are some other nuances, but that's the ELI5.

I'd add that even though there are 10 "vacancies" if someone upgrades or transfers themselves to another base they'll often be more than 10 awarded.

I believe the airline you’re talking about does transfers each month. So as long as theres openings and your seniority can hold it. That could be one month to several years.

Others have explained the base change process but keep in mind that some bases are aircraft specific. SkyWest is the only regional with a DFW and SLC base and DFW is CRJ only and SLC is a very ERJ-heavy base with limited CRJ flying, at least when I was there couple years ago.

Entirely depends on seniority. You start out at the bottom of the totem pole and as your seniority increases you can bid other bases.

I know it’s not Monday but I had a dumb question about basing. So let’s say a pilot just got picked up by a regional and wanted a base in SLC, but goes put DFW, is there a process to potentially move to SLC down the road? Or is the pilot just stuck? Like, do they have an advantage to pick their base the more senior they get or does it just depend on when an opening presents itself
