Two words that plague me now that I’m in my 50’s…

“Slim Fit”.
I’m starting a new job in a couple of weeks and the dress code is more formal than my last workplace. So I need a wardrobe update.
I am neither slim nor fit.
It’s like the fashion world is shrinking. More and more of the clothes I’m finding are slim fit. And I’m not quite big enough for Big and Tall. I’m in this Dad Bod no-man’s-land.
Where’s Fat Fit? Dad fit? Regular guy who eats too many snacks fit?
Ugh.
Expat111@reddit
I’ve said for years that slim fit clothes excludes about 90% of males aged 17 and over. We’re have a crazy high obesity rate and they push clothes designed for male waifs.
Decent-Revolution455@reddit
I want to know why adults can’t have pants with adjustable buttons in the waist line like we got as kids. I could wear the same pants all year and just adjust the buttons for summer & outdoors vs winter & extra insulation.
8675309-jennie@reddit
There are very nice pants , Haggar is one brand, that have hidden elastic at the sides. I believe Dockers makes them too. A store like JCP or Kohl’s might have a sale especially with Father’s Day, Weddings and Graduation seasons upon us.
A regular belt covers the hidden elastic, too. Go for a flat front vs pleated. Straight leg, rather than tapered. These pants look professional. I even bought my husband a Haggar suit with the adjustable waistband. Not only are they
Look for fabrics that can be easily laundered and don’t wrinkle much. When you find the pair/brand you like buy several others. Even if they are the same color.
Competitive_Jump_933@reddit
That's Haggar's flex series. I'm a "robust" sized guy and have to wear a suit at workand am on the move a lot. The flex pants are a life saver! They also have the rubber strip on the waistband that helps keep your shirt tucked in.
Wrangler also makes jeans that stretch a little. My ass looks great in them!
8675309-jennie@reddit
I couldn’t remember what they called them. When I saw the suit separates, I thought it was genius. I mean, guys weight fluctuates as much as women’s, sometimes. (Maybe it’s an age thing?) Women have a lot of choices. Men, not so much. Suits can get uncomfortable. Especially if you don’t wear them everyday.
They even have golf shorts like that. Looks professional and you’re comfortable.
TOW2Bguy@reddit
I've been wanting to try out the Men's Warehouse Chillflex suits but do love my Haggar suit that is currently a bit tight though it was "athletic fit" and soooooo roomy...til i was less athletic, age 48-50.
iwantmy-2dollars@reddit
Holiday button, swim suit season button, transitional button…you’d make a killing!
jreed66@reddit
Because a belt can handle the difference between an inch of extra fat in the winter and your summer sweat bod
Expat111@reddit
Weren’t Hagar or Sansabelt slacks something like that? I remember in the 70s and 80s old guys (they were probably in their 40s) wearing some pants brand that, I think, allowed expansion.
talulahbeulah@reddit
Came here to say this. 99% of people don’t look good in anything slim fit. Thank god skinny jeans are over.
chartreuse_avocado@reddit
My ex husband describes pants of his chubby youth exactly the way you did. I had to check your profile because he described the Husky fabric texture the same way
Expat111@reddit
We both suffered the rashes from that material. Durable but terrible stuff next to the skin.
ProBuyer810-3345045@reddit
Yeah I think it was very similar to canvas maybe one step removed from it
VegetableRound2819@reddit
Wait until the man takes away your pockets too. Then men and women will join our sweaty, chubby hands and commence a joint rebellion against the tyranny of trousers!

TOW2Bguy@reddit
This is exactly why I dearly miss Levi's Silver Tab "Baggy" jeans. Mine seemed to fit and last 15-20yrs-ish.
Then there's the orange tab, the red tab, and the silver tab differences in durability and quality themselves.
Dismal_Estate9829@reddit
There are plenty of young dudes in slim fit that shouldn’t be. Genz lacks any self awareness.
maybeRaeMaybeNot@reddit
suggesting a better fit of clothing = body shaming. FYI
Dismal_Estate9829@reddit
FYI. My generation tells the truth. I don’t subscribe to your nonsense. Overweight is health too?
maybeRaeMaybeNot@reddit
I guess? I’m told there are all shapes to healthy.
My kids never had their grandma go clothes shopping with them and it shows. 😂 brutal. Loving, but brutal .
Dismal_Estate9829@reddit
I don’t believe “There are all shapes of healthy” exists in medical journals but I’m no doctor. When I was a kids they taught us facts without social beliefs, today they seem to put emotions above facts. Why is a large percentage of Americans obese today compared to 20, 30, 40 years ago? If overweight was healthy then why was everyone in better shape? We were taught what we needed to be healthy. The medical/pharma industry doesn’t make the same money with a healthy society. Just the phrase “fat shaming” for “suggesting a better fit” is nothing but propaganda used as an excuse to be unhealthy….. “ just watch us dance and sing about Jardiance! You don’t need to do better. try just take our drugs!! My healthy “fit” weight is between 195-205ish. A few years ago I let myself go and hit 267 and never felt worse in my entire life, i got winded bending down to tie my shoes, I was about 46-48 years old and developed sleep apnea, my wife thought I was dead more than once while sleeping until I let out a demonic screech once I started breathing again. At 51 I’m back to 205 and feeling fantastic and I breathe all night long now. My skin is better, more energy and I’m even in a better headspace. Nobody can convince me overweight is healthy…nor is enabling people delusions. “Hey, do these slim fit jeans make me look fat?” “They don’t flatter you…. Maybe try another pair”is not shaming, it’s telling the truth. In my big days if I put on a pair of jeans that gave me a moose knuckle/muffin top combo I wouldn’t need anyone to tell me they’re not appropriate.
dazylynn@reddit
Are you diabetic? Because Jardiance is intended for a diabetic to help lower A1C(blood sugar). Some similar newer drugs have a bonus side effect of sometimes also helping to lower weight. For diabetics on these types of drugs, it's a boon to help people by lowering their A1C AND potentially addressing the obesity everyone's been bitching about, which ALSO helps to lower A1C.
I am salty at the implication that these types of drugs are some easy fix for an otherwise lazy slob to somehow "skip the line". For diabetics on these drugs, it's a double-win to help address a disease we didn't choose, to improve the A1C AND the weight. It's no different from being on heart meds to address heart problems, or antidepressants to address those problems, or acne meds to address chronic acne, or....etc.etc.
Dismal_Estate9829@reddit
There are people taking these drugs for weight loss, not diabetes. And if jardiance isn’t one of those drugs…my bad. There are plenty of slobs getting these meds for a quick weight loss while diabetics struggle to obtain them especially at a reasonable price. I’m salty that there are commercials pumping any drugs to the public through happy dancing commercials, it’s a big part of the issue we have this country. Sell them to medical professionals and not advertise to the public. It’s not ok.
You only cherry picked one part of my point because it’s a trigger for you and missed what I’m saying. That’s ok with me. 👍

The clothing stores don’t need to be hurtful. Just put slim, regular, and “uses CPAP” on the pants and I’ll know what to buy

They should label them “snack bag”, “regular bag”, “family bag”, and “party bag” based on my experience.🤭

We had this conversation at work somehow in the company store. All of the women’s sizes are a slim fit, which is teeny tiny. Looks like a 10-year-old would fit in it and the only options for women were white shirts. The men’s store had navy and gray.

sowdirect@reddit
They have a lot of loose fit clothes at old navy last I checked. The slim fit is kinda going out and a lot of the clothes are being replaced with the 90s fit. Which my son approves and appreciates (he is a teen) he is also not quite husky but isn’t a skinny guy either. Some pants even had waists where you could winch them in with a button on the inside. They had slacks but this was before December. Check online.

As a woman who has a medical condition that causes my legs to be abnormally thick no matter how thin the rest of me is (lipedema), the 20 years or so that skinny jeans and leggings were the only type of casual pants you could find were an absolute horror. I wear a suit to work everyday. I am most definitely not slim-fit. Never have been, never will be. Was a lineman in highschool, broad shoulders, barrel chest. I guess that I sport a dad bod now.
When I'm looking for work clothes, I filter for classic fit, and athletic fit. I have never been, and will never be, the guy on the magazine cover.
Your best bet is to go into someplace like Men's Wearhouse and actually get measured. I know my measurements, and know who I have to cheat up and down on by buying, trying on, and returning.
I also know that I have to buy suit separates instead of a complete suit because the drop between the jacket and trousers isn't enough for how I'm shaped. I will spend as much, or more, on tailoring than buying what fits. And the tailored trousers never do fit quite right.

paintingdusk13@reddit
Ironically, slim fit is getting harder and harder to find as it's been a thing for 15 years and fashion is circling back to straight and bootcut. I prefer slim fit and several of my favorite brands offer less option in slim fit now than previous years.
However, you misconstruing what "fit" means in this situation, which doesn't mean "in good shape" but rather defining "slim" as the style, or how the pants fit.
Slim fit was a response to the skinny jeans/pants phase, a slightly looser, less snug fit than how skinny pants fit
MiniJunkie@reddit (OP)
Ah, gotcha!
UselessOldFart@reddit
I make (or try to anyway) snarks about it, but in a serious note, give Brooks Brothers a look, maybe? They have a wide range from skinny marathon runner to didn’t-make-the-NFL-draft-now-in-accounting fits. If there’s an outlet nearby you can save a to , especially if you score “retail store” stiff lurking there. I had to find nice stuff for my work previous environment (banking), and going that route kept me in the appearance game but didn’t put me into crushing debt.
Good luck friend!🙏

Honestly, this is going to sound so weird, but look at Duluth. They have "khaki type" pants and button downs and they fit normal men. My husband loves every pair of pants he's owned from there. Unless your new job is like suit and tie formal, then maybe notm
cdjreverse@reddit
I hate to say this, but as a dude in a similar physical spot as you, I find that Old Navy is surprisingly good for men's clothing right now. I used to be a Banana Republic boy for work clothing (khakis/button downs/sweaters), but they are nothing but tight/slim fit. A buddy turned me onto Old Navy's tech-fit clothes.
MiniJunkie@reddit (OP)
We have one nearby - I’ll try it! I sorta assumed the quality was lower and the clothing wouldn’t last.
libzilla_201@reddit
Old Navy has a lot of their larger sizes online and not in the stores. Ask me how I know...
cdjreverse@reddit
As u.plantsrpeople-too noted, Banana Republic, Old Navy, the Gap, and Athleta are all the same company at different price points. Historically, Banana Republic was at the top in terms of style, quality, and price. The Gap was in the middle on those fronts. Their Khakis and T-shirts were staples in the 1990s and 2000s. Old Navy was at the bottom and more focused on weekend wear/casual.
At some point in the last five or ten years, IMHO, Banana Republic has fallen off a cliff in terms of quality and fit. BR still has some physical presence (esp. in outlets) but it's not worth the money or time to shop there anymore (and it was my go to spot for decades for business casual, clubbing, and even a few good suits). The Gap has just become a non-entity that gets licensed out (which is how I've bought Gap clothing at Sam's).
Meanwhile, Old Navy has somehow risen up in the ranks both in styling and quality.
It's not great. But I love how they have enough stretch in their pants to look good for a dad bod.
I think everybody has kinda gotten more skilled at making fast fashion and so the bottom tier brand has been pushed up quality wise. Plus, Old Navy had better physical locations by being the "cheap" brand to withstand the storms that have happened in the clothing market due to work-from-home and covid/post-covid.
Tl'dr - Old Navy is not bad quality actually.
TotallyDissedHomie@reddit
Old Navy is decent quality, tons of size/fit options for khakis

You need traditional/classic fit. I tend to narrow my searches at places I shop online to those fits to filter out all the slim and extra slim stuff. The "traditional" fit shirts that work for my dad bod are Brooks Bros ("Madison fit"), Nordstrom ("traditional fit"), Bugachi ("classic fit.")

I’m pretty average build. Not fat but not skinny. I do a lot of hiking and while I can get into slim fit pants on the waist, my calves never fit. Only malnourished rock stars and goths who drink black coffee and smoke clove cigarettes can wear them.

As someone who buys slim fit that is still too big, despite being a size 14, I appreciate it but I need super slim fit. They haven’t changed the cut in 100 years (or at least since the 80’s) and they are really forgiving in the waist/hips area.

Also ... "slacks."
LocoDarkWrath@reddit
I’ve been frustrated lately trying to find polo shirts that fit. Size Large is really tight in the shoulder large and chest. Tight like my nipples are obviously showing. But when I go up to size XL it’s like hold parachute Batman! It’s like it jumps 3 body sizes not 1. What’s up with that?
cash4chaos@reddit
Brooks Brothers is my go to!
DaCouponNinja@reddit
Most of the guys I’ve noticed wearing slim fit are also neither slim nor fit. Well-fitting and quality materials are going to look as good as whatever is currently fashionable. If it’s in your budget maybe get a few key pieces tailored to fit you with a slimmer silhouette but not egregiously slim

Shopping in the “Big & Tall” section of your local department store is disappointing. They have clothes for short & fat or tall & skinny but if you’re 6’4” and used to be built like a linebacker, but now you’ve tackled too many donuts, you’re SOL.
Euphoric-Use-6443@reddit
Just buy what fits!
BucketOBits@reddit
The good new is that you don’t have to be slim to wear a slim fit! And slim fit doesn’t have to mean tight.
If off-the-rack stuff doesn’t fit you well, it’s time to find a good tailor.
You can do this—I believe in you!
watch_them_fly@reddit
Second the tailor. It actually doesn’t cost too much in the long run and your outfits will look much more expensive.
BucketOBits@reddit
Yes!
I always tell people that a good fit is more important than having super-high-quality clothes. The average person isn’t going to be able to tell much difference between a suit that costs $500 and one that costs $3,000, but the average person can immediately tell the difference between a suit that fits well and one that fits poorly.
I’m a huge fan of average-quality, great-fitting clothes.

Depending on where you're getting clothes from, they sometimes have a tailor on site. I didn't know JC Penny's had a tailor until I started selling suits there. I don't know if that's still a service they offer, it was many years ago, but if you see something more professional than t-shirts and jeans it could be worth an ask.

I have the opposite problem. My husband has lost weight and is short. I’m buying his pants in the children’s section. Pants in the men’s section are all too big. It’s worse than it sounds. Finding pants that don’t look childish for him is such a headache. Even jeans look like what they are kids jeans. 😩

As a dad bod guy I’d recommend athleisure clothes that stretch. The Fabletics don pants are great, and come in regular fit (don’t buy slim). Just join for 1 month to get the sale and update your wardrobe. The polos are good quality too. Probably 50% of my wardrobe is Fabletics, the other half lulu I got off eBay for cheap. Stretchy fabrics for the win!
glasspheasant@reddit
I’ve had the opposite experience. Used to wear stuff baggy (as most of us did) so it was XL shirts all the way. Modern times took me down to a large shirt. These days I’m having to buy a medium shirt in most brands bc l am swimming in a large. I think America continues to fatten up and clothing continues to adjust accordingly.
allothernamestaken@reddit
With men's dress shirts at least, "slim fit" isn't just for slim guys. Even if you've got a gut, they may look better on you since they won't be billowing out over the waist as much.

Sometimes slim fit a size up is the perfect thing. If you have to squeeze into a L, then XL slim fit is the next size up.
I think clothing sizes are going exactly the opposite way. They are vanity sizing, particularly men's pants. I actually wore 36s for a long time but Levi's wants me to feel good about myself so I fit in a size 34 now. I got a pair of Vuori pants in 36 (real pants usually are true to size) and I can take them on and off without unzipping them.

Take my word, no matter what body type you are, formal wear should always be tailored for best fit. Generally everything off a rack is not going to be flattering anyone. You could end up looking like an awkward 14 year old going to a formal dance that’s never dressed up before.
Go to a store that specializes in suits, and start there. Find some pieces that fit decently and take it to a tailor for a perfect fit. And for reference, pants are usually the easiest to figure out a proper fit for, but sport coats I always recommend taking them in a little bit at waist level to give it some shape.

I'm not fat, but I've been powerlifting for 20 years, so my body is not exactly in line with the slim fit and skinny jean type stuff that seems popular today.
I buy a lot of stuff online, but I've had great luck with Levi's 569 jeans to fit my quads, butt, and calves. I haven't had to wear khakis to work in a while, but I used to stick with the Dockers No Iron khakis that they carried at JC Penney. Those seem to have a little bit more of a loose fit to them and they were easy to care for--just grab em out of the dryer and hang them up. They'd be mint.
Golf and polo shirts tend to be a little tight in the sleeves, but otherwise are fine. I like the Nike golf shirts. Dress shirts are harder because I have 17+ inch neck, but I need a sleeve that is closer to 31-32". Generally, when I find a shirt that meets those criteria, I end up with a whole tent of fabric around my mid-section, so tailoring can be warranted. You may find that tailoring your dress shirts is a requirement for your body type also. It def makes an improvement in how you look and feel.
OskarBlues@reddit
Slim fit is on the way out anyways. Looser/baggier/boxier clothing is becoming a thing again.
Jebgogh@reddit
I wear the "athletic fit" shirts and pants but am not very athletic and only slightly fit. They are not a slim as the slim fit but not so big as the "husky" sizing. Pants are the hardest for me and I have had good luck with target Goodfellows believe it or not for cotton style chinos and khakis. More room in the crotch and bum through the thighs with thinner as it goes to ankle/cuff so not that kinda silly big cuff opening as the straight legs.
I go less formal on pants as find them more comfortable and go cotton oxford button down shirt for better looking than the polo shirts a lot of guys default to. Wearing the oxford makes people think you are management versus the workers in polos as stupid as that sounds but I had had it happen multiple times with my boss on job sites. And if you work where it gets cold a tweed sport coat is warm and looks good and is functional with plenty of pockets for phone, wallet. And if you have a sudden more formal meeting a tie works wonders as so few wear them anymore outside of a suit. Throw one in with an oxford and everyone in the polos looks the same while you stand out and look professional. And women are suckers for ties. Dont know why but every time i have meetings and wear a tie - women comment on it.
maddog2271@reddit
Yes slim fit is the devil and unless you have a physique approaching that of Brad Pitt in fight club you probably won’t look good. you need to find “regular fit”, which does still exist. also watch out for slim fit clones like “tailored fit”, ”athletic fit” and so on. it’s all just slim fit basically.
RVAblues@reddit
Ugh. I hate that. I’m in the same boat size-wise. For the time being. I decided to see if a GLP-1 drug would work for me. It’s only been a few months, so I’m certainly not slim by any stretch, but I can at least sometimes comfortably do “2X” sizes now.
But yeah, buying a suit last year for a funeral was…less than optimal. They just don’t make nice clothes for bigger dudes. The fashion world thinks we just want to wear nothing more formal than a bowling shirt.
kabekew@reddit
I have a similar issue and I've found Untuckit's men's shirts in both regular and relaxed fit my dad body well. Also Bugatchi's line of shirts (classic fit). They generally taper in at the bottom and I think were made for realistic bodies instead of male models.

These 90s style jeans didn't look good on me in my 20s in the 90s and especially not in my 60s. I'm lucky I'm tall and slim but it doesn't help me with finding clothes. It's frustrating because now i'm old enough to buy whatever I want (within reason) but I can't find anything that fits.

pumkinut@reddit
As someone who is naturally thick, my calves and thighs are genetically ginormous, slim fit equates to "Don't Even Try"
Usually with slim fit pants, I can't even get them up to my waist, because of my thighs. I so miss the days of relaxed fit. I could actually buy new pants and wear them. Now I need to buy pants where I know the waist size is too big.
gaddnyc@reddit
"slim fit" mens pants are really ridiculous. There is no way a man in his 50's should be walking around in what looks like yoga pants. There are some "baggy" trousers on Abercrombie and Fitch that I wear as biz casual and they look great, you won't look like a 90's skateboarder.
Appropriatelylazy@reddit
There was some point at which I stopped looking at the label for size and started trying on a range of sizes to find the one I thought was best suited for my body.
And then ripped out the label upon purchase!
I've never had clothing tailored but it sounds like a very good suggestion for dressier outfits when you want a more custom fit, too!
CTDV8R@reddit
Ralph Lauren has shirts in slim fit, custom slim and classic fit. Search by price, they often have items on sale which are out of season for some people and perfectly acceptable for many others - I feel like most of the time the times I find for my husband are considered last season but still completely fine for us. The benefit of good quality clothes is that they will hang better on you and last much longer.
Find a decent tailor and buy the best quality you can afford, it will be a bit of an investment however it will be the right choice long term. When I first started in the work world I had a few basic pieces tailored to me, kept rotating them and then each week would add a new blouse, skirt or slacks. I have pieces from 20 years ago that still look very good because they were better quality and a neutral style.
Congratulations on the new job!!
conspicuousmatchcut@reddit
Don't worry, slim fit is on its way out. Only millennial Republicans wear it now. I don't know what the best stores are in Canada (as an American, I'm jealous!) but you should be able to search for straight fit or athletic fit or relaxed fit in a lot of retailers.

I'm in the same boat as I have the typical dad bod, but everything made is for slim. I'm not fat, but I'm not slim either. I just prefer a relaxed/loose fit pants, but not baggy like the 90s. And for the love of god, open cuffs at the bottom. I don't want them to sinch at my calves and ankles. I rode a bike exclusively for 6-7 years growing up, I have thick legs.
