Yes to this. Windows onedrive sends me these daily “on this day” emails with photos from my photo folder. I was looking at photos from a lake trip on this day in 2006 - that seems like yesterday and I feel like the same person in that photos, but then I think of all that transpired in my life since then - marriage ,divorce, death of parent, multiple moves. It sounds like a lot but it really did zip by.
The older you're "baby" gets, the more you realize, "Oh shit, when did I get old?" But damn if my mental age isn't 25, wisdom of a 90 yo and some days my body says you should be dead. It's very confusing. My parents looked and acted old at 50. That's a hell no.
Watching my kids grow is a reminder of this. Time was so slow while going through school k-12. College sped up dramatically, and once I had kids, WTF How are we here?
I don't think about this kind of thing. To me it leads to regrets and constant feelings that I've missed out and I need to do more. The reality is that I'm just doing the best I can with the tools I have. No regrets. No countdowns to death. No itemizing my various pains and whatnot.
‘No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away, until the clock wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone’s life is only the core of their actual existence.’ Terry Pratchett
While she is not physically with you, the things she did and the love she put into the world will still cause ripples for many years.
😢 I’m sorry for both your loss, as well as your dad’s loss. My husband and I have been together since I was 20 and he was 27. I recently turned 50. The older we become, the more I think about the reality that one day one of us is going to be without the other, and it hurts. It’s such a blessing to share so many years with your person. Yet, so sad to contemplate life without them. I hope your dad finds comfort in knowing the love he and your mom share will live on throughout eternity. ❤️
That's what my great-grandfather told me. My theory is that we don't really die, we just keep getting faster until the rest of time goes by in an instant.
They just go faster and faster it seems. I remember as a kid it seemed like it took forever to go from December 1st to the 25th. Days seemed like weeks or months. Now it's "Fuck, Christmas is already here again"...
50 was a non-event physically for me. I keep pretty detailed records of my workouts and at 50 I was still running mile splits at about the same pace from when I was in my late 30's. It's 55 when stuff gets weird.
Happy Birthday! 🎉 It does go quick. I’ll be 59 next week myself, and I still find it hard to believe that my cousin’s son who was born 6 months after I graduated high school is now middle aged and has 2 kids of his own.
The clock/calendar is fundamentally flawed in that it is strictly broken down into fixed intervals. A real clock would be slowing on a logarithmic scale to synchronize with the dilation of everything. Then our 60th year ‘feels’ like it’s the same length as our 16th. Makes sense anyway
I'm feeling everything in this thread. FWIW, I had a thought recently that has sort of helped: What did I do or accomplish from age 10 to 50? That's a ton of stuff. So pretending I get 40 more years...what else is out there still to do?
My back is jacked up, my shoulders are frozen, everything hurts, I'm not going to skate down any mountains again any time soon...but there's a lot I can still do. (Here's hoping we get another 40, anyway.)
I’m not working now. Haven’t been for 3 years due to a disability. Time is still fast. I’m never bored bc I don’t have time to be bored. I sleep a lot, I garden as best I can in the summer and I read. And now I have Reddit! I have so much to do that I never had time to do before this and I don’t do it. Part of it is the pain and part is I’m just happy laying here with my cats and listening to the birds. Time is sped up now too so it’s even worse. Wasn’t 1996 just a few years ago? And surely 2005 five was last year! It’s wild when you think about it. We are closer to death now. Sure anyone could die at any moment but we’re past the midway point of our lives. We need to hurry up and do whatever we want to do before we’re too old or in too much pain… it twists my mind to think about it
Sorry boomer here but I came to this thread because my oldest son is GenX and is amazing at everything he does. Works so hard, is a great sun, husband and father. Ok I digress.
I tell him this all the time because despite making good money, he rarely takes time to really experience life. He’s so worried about saving for the future and giving his kids everything and I see so many of your generation doing the same.
The key to happiness is BALANCE in using your time and assets to …as the song lyrics say “ to be home to your soul is ecstasy! Go on long weekends to see things you’ve never seen before or start a hobby that brings you joy. Travel the world one country at a time. Whatever you can do to fill your soul and expand your joy. Don’t save every penny for retirement. Too many people do the same and don’t make it to retirement, are unable to get around easily due to joint or back issues or life happens and you just can’t do it. Balance your work and play.
Right along with that is stop thinking you’re doing your kids a favor by giving them everything they want including paying their total college bill or DO for a house and/or a 60k wedding. The reason you’re a great generation of hard workers is because those boomer parents of yours, PIA they may be, taught you a good work ethic, showed you that hard work is how you get ahead in life. So why are you not teaching your kids the same. Remember the goal is t to be their best buddy, it’s to raise string, independent, resourceful humans,
I’m turning 53 next week and I still have adult imposter syndrome. Even though I stopped the drink and drugs working hard and being responsible I still think like the 20 year old I was yesterday-ish.
Happy birthday.
happy birthday bro.. I hit 55 in a few months and I still remember my first day of kindergarten... f--k me it flys by ..lifes that thing that happens to you when you're busy making other plans.
I can’t wait to be fifty. I can finally get people to leave me alone about how young I look or how old or fat I am so I can just age comfortably. I’ve seriously considered dying my hair grey for this reason but I don’t want to deal with dying or growing it out. I’m so sick of people’s opinions and projections and abuse over how they think that age number should look on MY body.
Consider if the last ten years (back to 2015) went by quickly. Think about that for a moment.
Then, realize the next ten will go by just as fast. People often say things like, “wow, I can’t believe it’s Thursday already,” or “can you believe it’s (insert holiday here)!!” And that is life. It just happens so damn fast.
When you want to put it in historical terms, WWII was only 30 before you were born, and 9/11 was 24 years ago.
Now, remember how irrelevant and distant WWII felt for some of us. The average 25-year-old has lived in a post-9/11 world and had a front seat on the rollercoaster of a dying empire.
I am kind of happy my ride is over half over because sometimes I feel sick and want to get off this ride.
To slow down time you've got to change up your routines. I heard this podcast about how, when we're small time crawls by, but as we age it flies. They said it because kids are soaking in new experiences and their minds have to slow down to grasp what's happening. As we age many many things become routine and there's nothing new for the brain to have to grapple with. We have to add variety to our lives to slow time.
TL;DR getting old means life gets predictable and your brain doesn't have to try, so time flies by
By now, whether you want to admit it or not, you have reached peak-midlife. This means you are probably done with the angst, regret and embarrassment of youth and have moved on to the ennui, regret and embarrassment of full adulthood. See the difference?
Happy birthday! I used to think ‘it’s just a number’, but turning 40 bummed me out. For a while, years even. But turning 50 was actually really cool. Affirming, in a ‘holy crap, I got THIS far?’ way. Almost 6 years ago now, still mostly positive about it.
Also, I suddenly had a tangible perspective on geologic time. Half a century! I felt closer to the earth. As in almost ready for a dirt nap…
I kid, I kid! Just the last line, the rest was sincere.
My father, may he rest in peace, told me, "your going to wake up one morning and you'll be 30, it happens just like that!" He was absolutely right. I turned 30 over 26 years ago! Carpe Diem!!
I'm still holding out hope that affordable replacement android parts will be a thing before I need one. I stopped having birthdays at 33 so I will die fairly young but I'm quickly approaching my 50th Canada Day of existence (no I'm not from Canada but it's been on every calendar I ever remember looking at).
I'm adopted, so I have no idea what genetics has in store for me (beyond the fun stuff so far, like genetic hypertension and cholesterol issues). Sometimes, it feels a bit like I'm twisting knobs but I figure work on what i can!
A BFF died at 34 so I now reflexively go huh - she’d be thrilled to be my age now for every bday esp since they are solidly all starting with 5’s. This is not to say you can’t be freaked out by it but it’s been instant perspective for
me and always will until it isn’t relevant anymore so to speak.

My father, may he rest in peace, told me, "your going to wake up one morning and you'll be 30, it happens just like that!" He was absolutely right. I turned 30 over 26 years ago! Carpe Diem!!

I’ll join you in January my friend. It’s pretty wild?

If I were a car…I’d be an antique.

Arguably the best kind of car though. I love antique cars.

Happened to me 6 years ago. Frankly, I wasn't expecting to make it this far! Decided to start hitting the gym to keep some mobility.

I'm still holding out hope that affordable replacement android parts will be a thing before I need one. I stopped having birthdays at 33 so I will die fairly young but I'm quickly approaching my 50th Canada Day of existence (no I'm not from Canada but it's been on every calendar I ever remember looking at).
mucifous@reddit
It's gotta be nice knowing how old you are going to be when you shuffle loose this mortal coil ;)

That’s where I am Now. I need to keep this thing on the road until the finish line.

I'm adopted, so I have no idea what genetics has in store for me (beyond the fun stuff so far, like genetic hypertension and cholesterol issues). Sometimes, it feels a bit like I'm twisting knobs but I figure work on what i can!
1Pip1Der@reddit
No, actually, it doesn't.
Pour one out for absent friends.
devilsgrimreaper@reddit
pour one for each or just one for all of them?

They were your friends, do what you want.

I'll grab a handle on my way home then...lost too many.
mucifous@reddit
It has happened to every 50 year old so far.
Better?

A BFF died at 34 so I now reflexively go huh - she’d be thrilled to be my age now for every bday esp since they are solidly all starting with 5’s. This is not to say you can’t be freaked out by it but it’s been instant perspective for me and always will until it isn’t relevant anymore so to speak.

Please enjoy your youth; it's fleeting! Have a great birthday!
