Bring back the diners

Don’t y’all miss the Country Pride and Iron Skillet?
Remember how they had a counter for “professional drivers only” and we used to talk to each other. We could sit there, over a cup of coffee and a plate of toast and scrambled eggs and talk about rates and loads and mechanical issues, and what was good or bad, some politics, some religion…
Isn’t it sad that those spaces were rented to Popeye’s Chicken and Subway? Is a rancid Subway sandwich really a replacement for an almost burnt Country Pride steak? How sad.
Bring back the diners.
JimGordonsKnife@reddit
We used to sit around the various truck stop diners of America and tell tales, exchange info, bust balls.
Now, many in the industry sit alone in our trucks pounding bullshit poison food in to our rapidly deteriorating bodies.
This shit ain't what it used to be.
banglines@reddit
I'm a standup comic out of Phoenix, AZ, working on a “tour” that does pop-up comedy shows at truck stops. I know it won’t fix the food, but I think it could bring back some of the community vibe that’s gone missing.
Is that something you’d get out of the cab for?
Chamber53@reddit
That’s gonna be a tough road to make money on. You may grab one handful of truckers to sit in and I’m sure manny locals aren’t wanting to go to a truck stop a stand up act. Yiu sure you’re gonna do that? I don’t see it as sustainable at all
banglines@reddit
Making money off the show isn't an immediate priority, although it would be nice for the longevity of the concept (and I do think it can get there).
Up-and-coming standup comics want mic time (more at bats). In the city, you can hit AT MOST 2-3 open mics in one night... for a total of 9-15min stage time.
On top of that, its hard to gauge how good your "jokes" are because the majority of the crowd is other standup comics who have heard your jokes all week and more than likely have a totally different humor style than you (and they are also focused on themselves!).
Totally agree with you on the sustainability from the money side of the equation - it wouldn't be.
That10neGuy@reddit
I think it provides a good opportunity to try a broad range of jokes. You'd definitely have a varied crowd as long as you are able to post on multiple trucking related forums. I'd get outta the truck for your shows!
brokedasherboi@reddit
Oh if I saw a sign advertising it on my way in for the night I'd definitely watch. Don't get offended if not many show up though, oftentimes our breaks are barely long enough to eat and sleep so a lot of guys wouldn't spend their precious break time on it
banglines@reddit
I am sure it is different for each driver and no day is the same, but generally speaking - is there a time frame you would see most "optimized" for the show? A one hour time frame.
brokedasherboi@reddit
There's also plenty of times out breaks are longer than 10 hr, example shut down for the night at 6pm and don't have to leave until 7am. Just depends on the load
brokedasherboi@reddit
Yes it does vary a lot but I'd say 8 or 9 pm might be your best bet, that's late enough the lot would already be mostly full but early enough a lot of people would still be awake
JimGordonsKnife@reddit
I'd definitely make an effort to check that out.
banglines@reddit
We are wicked early in this concept, but if you do want to stay up to date - check out truckstopcomedy.com for updates. There is an email list as well. We are hoping to do the first show in June somewhere in Arizona - some promising leads so far!
jaylew1981@reddit
Pull into the truck stop early, and set up your collapsible A-frame advertisement board stating the deets for the show that night. We all pass by it going into the truck stop for food or fuel. And let it rip during show time! I think this would be an awesome idea. Maybe drivers will film you and post you on YouTube. Get enough vids on the tube to do a show at the huge truck stops like on i80 in Iowa. I fully back this idea!
banglines@reddit
I'm currently running into an issue with red tape at corporate truck stops. I will talk to managers and etc. to get permission to run the show, but I always get funneled to someone at corporate who won't give me the time of day.
To combat this, I've been focusing on locally owned mom-and-pop truck stops (unfortunately there are so few).
Have you seen any other vendors at truck stops before? Church on Sundays or anything like that?
Orthonut@reddit
That sounds fun. I would.
Asavery91@reddit
Yes
Wernher_VonKerman@reddit
The rawlins TA has a country pride, I’ve stopped there for gas as a four-wheeler a couple times on road trips west. I recall it being a pretty pathetic little truck stop though.
Filamcouple@reddit
It was better before TA bought them out. But I always went to the West side of Rawlins and stopped at Gay Johnson's. That place was old school.
AndromedanPrince@reddit
Gay Johnson's? 🧐
Filamcouple@reddit
It had NOTHING to do with penis, I promise.
Wernher_VonKerman@reddit
That place seems to no longer exist when I look it up on google. Did it become the flying j? I know that one, never stopped at the real thing but scs software models it as a “haulett”.
Filamcouple@reddit
The original building burned down and was rebuilt decades ago, and shortly thereafter Flying Squirrel bought the location.
Ok-Indication-8992@reddit
Being a comedian in truckstops I hope you are ok with sarcastic heckelers
Notols@reddit
I totally love wasting $40 on a microwave dinner and eating in a grimy booth while some 40 year old with meth teeth asks me how everything is every 2 minutes.
Jondiesel78@reddit
I have a question related to this. Something I've been discussing with my wife. We're also in the beef business, and have property adjacent to three truckstops. If I opened a farm store that sold high quality steaks, and put in a pavilion for drivers to grill their own steak, how many would be interested?
Filamcouple@reddit
If you're on a busy highway, or close to a large metro area. Just have a well lit parking lot, showers, and a convenience store with reasonable prices. Offer several different reasons to stop. I've always thought something like this would go over good if it was in walking distance of a typical fuel stop. In my mind I always saw a pool room with free wifi, and if it's legal they could buy a beer (from your store) and shoot some billiards.
Jondiesel78@reddit
I'm off i75 south of Atlanta. I wouldn't have room for parking, but I would be as close to the truck stop parking lots as their store.
SuperTruckerTom@reddit
Exit 201 or 205? I live in Pike County myself.
Hardly anyone goes.to Buckner's anymore. My wife is from Jackson. Are you the white fence 2 ponds on 36 going to Barnesville?
Jondiesel78@reddit
Beneficialsensai@reddit
Talk to each other? I miss that.It ain't happening nowadays.
AndromedanPrince@reddit
last thing i wanna do after driving all day is talk to other people lol
PuffinPastry@reddit
Is this new? I've only been away from OTR for 8 months, but they were there when I left.
Old-Wolf-1024@reddit
There are still a few diners out there, you just gotta know where to find them. I do kinda miss the green chili stew from the Giant truckstop on I-40 and at one time Iron Skillet had a lock on liver & onions(almost as good as my momma’s). Unfortunately I sat thru 5-6 too many yarns at the truckers counter from all those ex-SEAL,federal marshal, triple digit,24 hour west coast turnaround fellers I could handle.
FlyingMjunkY@reddit
Gotta love those damn Marshall stories.
Internal-Delusions01@reddit
Spent 3 yrs OTR and went to the Iron Skillet maybe twice. It was crap on both occasions.
Alternative_Edge_775@reddit
Last time I sat sat down to eat at a Country Pride, there was a.. let's say "mature gentleman" talking about how he had to leave his gun at home because he's too hot-headed and how much he hates homosexuals.
He went on about it quite a bit.
SuperTruckerTom@reddit
777 in Tucson exit 268.
TA in Tallulah LA was awesome till Covid killed the buffet.
Soon as you cross West into NM on 40 first exit is good food.
Montana I-94 O can't remember the place. Near Big Horn
haulhand@reddit
That would be the Triple T in Tucson it’s still decent but they put it up for sale so it will probably go away.
Russel’s at the first exit in NM on 40 used to be good until TA bought them now they are just another TA dive.
Wide-Engineering-396@reddit
When yall started meal prep, cooking in trucks the restaurants went bye bye, we are own enemies
Supertrucker82@reddit
There's a king of the hill episode about this exact thing.
Ok-Youth1323@reddit
Waffle Houses exist.
Mediocre_george@reddit
Having dinner with other drivers is NOT a selling point.
onlyBotsdownvote-me@reddit
You had to be there.
Mediocre_george@reddit
20 years ago, I bet it was great. I've been driving for 8 years now, and I learned very early on that it is rarely worth trying to converse with my fellow drivers.
Onefoot199@reddit
My first month or so solo I was struggling to back into a spot, and this dude came ober and helped me.
Told him I appreciated it, he said we'd all been there. He then proceeded to tell me how "the blacks" were ruining America.
I left. I stil had a couple hours left on my clock
Jaycool10@reddit
From Sugar to Shit
Mediocre_george@reddit
This, exactly. I've just had too many times where a simple, polite "evening, how are you" was taken as "could you tell me all about your religious and political beliefs?"
Own-Load-7041@reddit
I dunno, while eating at a country pride I watched the boss add water to the food on the buffet. I thought, just swap it out for new food. The hermie sanders food is awesome though.
lexi_berkman@reddit
And 70’s uppers.
RedlineM5@reddit
Nah. Don't need old timers telling me I don't deserve what I worked for because I haven't "paid my dues".
Comprehensive_Curve1@reddit
Back in the good ol' days where they didn't punish you for moving over to let 'em on the interstate; when they'd slow down two miles and hr for 30 seconds to let the line of trucks pass; when all you needed was a CB to find the best deals on lizards and assorted party favors.
I had a brand new stick shift truck assigned to me for a while though, so there's still some good left in this world.
mintleaf_bergamot@reddit
It seems like the whole trucking culture has changed so much in the last 30 years. Not only are the diners and truck stops gone ... so are so many other things that came with being a trucker years ago. My brother was a long haul trucker for most of his life. He loved life on the road and had such a camaraderie with his fellow CB buddies and truckers. He knew every highway in the U.S. He often brought home people he had picked up along the way. All of the truckers back then hated their dispatchers. Today I'm not even sure truckers talk to a dispatcher. In his early career, there were no limits as to how many hours my brother could drive a day -- that shortened his life considerably, considering the drugs he took to get from one place to another. But it was a life he loved. When he was going in and out at the end ... he was on the road, shifting gears, driving a truck. Did anyone else drive during these times? How are things better now? Worse?
Vegetable_Living_415@reddit
Like everything governments touch they ruined it. Nowadays you got not only the government but insurance companies and brokers dipping their fingers into the companies demanding things are done their way.
On top of that there's the culture collapse, low pay, low paying freight, low volume of freight, high fuel cost, cheaply made trucks that are still overpriced that break down constantly. Just some examples.
Filamcouple@reddit
You are correct about everything, especially the culture collapse.
Chamber53@reddit
lol, no I don’t miss it. I can count on one hand how many times I choose to eat at iron skillet (or the like) and sat on that counter. And I moved my seat on a few occasions because some truckers are insufferable when trying to spark up a conversation with.
heebro@reddit
Strike 1: Country Pride
Strike 2: Iron Skillet
Strike 3: Having to go to TA or Petro just to eat the shittiest diner food in the country
Swing and a miss

LeeAbeats@reddit
I think most drivers get their food to go now.
nikifullerton@reddit
It costs over $20 to sit down and eat now. Meanwhile wages haven't gotten any better.
QuietRightSlick@reddit (OP)
It costs $20 to eat at Popeye’s or Arby’s, anyway.
nikifullerton@reddit
Not if you skip the drink and fries...
dbxbeat@reddit
Ok, $16 then. It's still too much for bullshit food.
nikifullerton@reddit
I just order chicken thighs at Popeyes or cheap "value menu" sandwiches... two or three of those never cost more than $10. I skip the sides and have cold drinks in my truck.
StealthyNoctowl@reddit
But I can eat it in my truck with my own youtube video
onlyBotsdownvote-me@reddit
Who would... why would anyone skip...? Why not also skip the sandwich? I'm not "nickel-and-diming" it, here.
GhostOfLulcifer@reddit
Not at Waffle House
nikifullerton@reddit
Yeah, but finding a Waffle House I can park near and walk to isn't always easy, there's only a few in the region I work in that I know I can walk to or park at. But I definitely love WH and don't need a menu when I order... I know what's on it.
These days I mostly eat food that I buy at a grocery store and store in my portable fridge, and reheat in my microwave. For my 30 I might grab something, but 30 minutes isn't enough time to sit down, but I do very much miss full service restaurants that aren't Dennys or IHOP.
BeenThruIt@reddit
Waffle House went from 9 and change to $16....
StonedTrucker@reddit
Everything went up but at least you get real food from waffle house. If you're lucky you even get a friendly waitress
BeenThruIt@reddit
I do loves me some well made waffle house. It's amazing the difference between a well run one and a... not good one.
GhostOfLulcifer@reddit
....this might break me if true
JulesWinnfielddd@reddit
Ew, both of those are fucking trash. I'd rather eat my dollar bills directly than that shit
TaiPax@reddit
I still know a bunch of Country Prides and Iron Skillet but I do know some are gone. (Please close the popeyes in dexter MI and reopen the Country pride.... thats such a bad popeyes.) I miss the soup and Salad bar. Eat that as a meal and get the rest to go. Two meals for the price of one.
What I'm surprise at is when I do sit down and eat a meal. Its not really any slower then getting something from a fast food place.
dbxbeat@reddit
Had a great conversation with a couple drivers at a truck stop in Brampton Mills West Virginia the night before a big ice storm came through. It was also their fried fish night. I'm a newer driver, I only had less than a year and at that point but it was so welcoming and I felt like I was part of something I had never been a part of before. That's one of those highs from driving OTR that you can't get anywhere else.
That and listening to Art Bell while driving through the Mojave while the sun is going down. I'm local now, and anytime anybody ask me if I miss driving OTR, I tell them there are a few things I miss but I would never do it again.
stankneggs74@reddit
Midnight radio has never been the same since Art left.
ChoneFiggins4Lyfe@reddit
I often wonder what happened to Mel and his hole.
Theofus@reddit
I don't drive anymore, but those were my favorite places to eat! I even did the "who made this" theatrics and tipped the chef that made my steak! One of my favorite memories from trucking.
stankneggs74@reddit
Wait. They got rid of Country Pride AND Iron Skillet!? That Skillet in Remington, IN was oftentimes either my send-off or my welcome back on the way through.
Gonzotrucker1@reddit
Can you imagine eating next to some of these flip flop pajama wearing no shower in a week guys fresh out of mom’s basement?
Daddgonecrazy@reddit
At least their feet are washed in the restroom right? 🤣
QuietRightSlick@reddit (OP)
If they brought back the diners, that might give those guys incentive to shower. Maybe they would like to be presentable for the waitress, who might flirt with him.
Gonzotrucker1@reddit
They don’t know how to talk to women.
g0d_help_me@reddit

onlyBotsdownvote-me@reddit
That was the real value of sitting down at a diner with other drivers. Every single one of them has driven for 20 years, and there's the entertaining story of how they got the best of a DOT officer.
hesslake@reddit
There is still one in Grand Rapids Michigan
Pvt-Hawkeyes@reddit

Minty_Doe_Boi@reddit
There also one still in York Nebraska and Amarillo Texas
Mediocre_george@reddit
Man, I have never gotten a worthwhile meal out of the 76th street truck stop.
Some of the other local guys rave about it though. Either they have horrible taste, or I've been unlucky the 3 or 4 gone I've eaten there. Probably a little of both.
Minty_Doe_Boi@reddit
There’s still an Iron Skillet in Nebraska

There's still a couple iron skillets and country prides here and there.
Rasty1973@reddit

FreeAndRedeemed@reddit
Yup, I’m glad some of the TAs and Petros are replacing the with Black Bear Diners.
fretman124@reddit
I’m not a trucker.
You guys talk of being able to eat and chat….
In 1985 I was driving a 24ft U-Haul from Rome Ny, to Sacramento. I was in the military and changing stations.
Near Waco Nebraska I ran into a blizzard. My first indication things were going to shit was when the semi in front of me was blown off the road. I tried a motel, no joy so I stopped at the truck stop. There was probably 200 trucks there. It was late at night and restaurant was closed but they had the coffee pots running. There were about 20 drivers sitting at some tables, all the booths were empty and the lights in that half of the place were off. I sat a ways away just listening. In a bit one of them called me over and offed a seat.
I sat there and talked with them until way late…. My dad was a retired weighmaster in Oregon. I mentioned they may not like him much and several of them knew who I was talking about. Said he was good guy.
It was a night I’ll never forget. I ended up curled up in a booth sleeping till morning. The freeway was hella washboarded when I left and over about 30 miles shook both bumpers off the U-Haul. All of it was quit the experience
williamsdj01@reddit

The TA in rawlins has a country pride… stopped there on road trips west a couple times as a four-wheeler. Awful dingy ass truck stop though.

There's still an Iron skillet in Kingdom City, MO. I go there often enough I don't have to order. 😅
Vegetable_Living_415@reddit
That's a hell of plus isn't it? 😁
StealthyNoctowl@reddit
I was at the Boise Stage Stop and some driver like twice my age just kept rambling about his truck. As a 24 year old I just want to eat and go to bed lol. I dont need to hear someone's life story
UrbanIronPoet@reddit
Man, those were the days!
The crazy-shaped iron skillet plates, real food piled high at the buffets, and the nonstop chatter of truckers from all over the country chopping it up like old friends. Strangers would talk your ear off just because that’s how it was. Nobody was antisocial back then.
And who could forget when they switched the hours of service system to with the CS 2000 nonsense I think that what it was called back then, mannnnnn Truckers everywhere were heated. Protests broke out, especially that wild scene down in Laredo, truck stops packed, drivers posted up with bullhorns, voices echoing through the night like it was a party and a protest all in one 🤣 🤣 🤣
Trucking used to be soooooo fun, man. The money was flowing. There were so many loads, you’d have to tell your dispatcher, “Chill, that’s too many give me a breather!”
Those were the golden days of the road man.
mike-2129@reddit
I remember it. What was the other TA restaurant. Country pride and there was another one. Iron skillet was petro.
justhereforthefunnyZ@reddit
I really miss the salad bar all you can eat for 10 bucks with a drink. Only healthy option on the road back then.
onlyBotsdownvote-me@reddit
I'm embarrassed to tell this story. But back in the late '90s, I was in a real big hurry. We were on paper logs, and I just was wishing that I could find a quick bite to eat, and keep on rolling. Can't we get a McDonald's or a Subway?
Well, my wishes came true. Now, I long for a square meal with vegetables. Soup, salad, and a kind waitress to take my order. My, the times, they are a changin'.
Gonzotrucker1@reddit
Remember the Willams? They had good food.
onlyBotsdownvote-me@reddit
