Hats off to all the Gen X women with daughters

We didn't all name our daughters Stacey! ROFL
A thought I had the other night
Ok_Schedule5017@reddit
I am a Jennifer and I thought it was avoiding this mess with my daughter. Nope, she’s a Sarah
OreJen@reddit
I'm a Jennifer, my mom's a Lynda. Thought I'd dodged the issue with my kid. Nope, it was a delayed reaction. Their name is Alexa.
I_M_N_Ape_@reddit
Their.
OreJen@reddit
They are NB and go by Lex now. I do my best to respect that because either way they're my kid and I'm not a boomer.
I_M_N_Ape_@reddit
Riiiight...but I'm not her.
Zapper13263952@reddit
"Alexa, okay some 80s music."
"Is that 1880s or 1980s?"
Endless apologies but it had to be done.
Der_fluter_mouse@reddit
eatmoregrubs@reddit
I’m a Jennifer and my sister is a Sara and my sister in law is a Sarah.
DogLady1722@reddit
There’s like 3 Sara/Sarah songs, right?
Ok_Schedule5017@reddit
I don’t know
DogLady1722@reddit
My favorites:
Sara - Jefferson Starship
Sara Smile - Hall & Oates
Sarah - Prince
Sarah - Thin Lizzie
hfpfhhfp@reddit
Fleetwood Mac too, I think.
suffaluffapussycat@reddit
Sara - Bob Dylan
IcebergSlimFast@reddit
Yes!
My favorite verse: I stayed up for days in the Chelsea Hotel, writing Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands for you
nrith@reddit
Prince?
DogLady1722@reddit

stuck_behind_a_truck@reddit
What’s even worse is that those of us with Sarahs often gave them the same middle name.
GrizzliezRule@reddit
What is the standard? My son was going to be a Sarah Elizabeth if born a girl. I still reminisce.
OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit
Elizabeth is probably the most common middle name out there for girls. My mom, sister, wife, and MIL all have Elizabeth as their middle name.
stuck_behind_a_truck@reddit
and there it is
Ok_Schedule5017@reddit
My Sarah doesn’t have the standard middle name so at least she has that. It’s out there but not “common”.
HawthorneMama@reddit
I’m also a Jennifer, and our girl baby name was Minerva - not putting someone else through that nonsense
cinnamongirl73@reddit
I didn’t name any of my girls Stacey, however, I did name my oldest Cait. I was 15 when I had her, and all her friends would gravitate to my house, I’ve always been “Goth Mom,” and I’d walk out the door to hit a Goth club when she was in high school, and all her guy friends would loudly sing “Caitie’s Mom has got it goin on.” I’d get the teenage eye roll, and I’d laugh. She’s 36 now and she said they all see pics on sm, and they still sing it!!! 😂😂😂
zeldasusername@reddit
This is so cute
cinnamongirl73@reddit
Thanks! For me it is. For her? Probably not so much but she takes it well! 😂😂😂
Careless_Lion_3817@reddit
I named my daughter Laila for a number of reasons but turns out it’s now a very popular now 😅
zeldasusername@reddit
My girls would've been Niamh and Alicia
OhSusannah@reddit
I couldn't name my daughter Stacy because I don't actually have it goin' on.
discourse_friendly@reddit
Except we all accidently named our daughter Olivia
StormdancerVLDL@reddit
I was a teenager when I named my poor daughter Champagne.
I_M_N_Ape_@reddit
Lol. Socioeconomics.
Oldwhitedudist2@reddit
A girl I went to high school with named her son Wrangler. Because said child's dad was wearing Wranglers jeans when he was conceived.
elphaba00@reddit
One of my coworkers - an older Gen X - has a grandson named Stetson. He and Wrangler should meet up.
StormdancerVLDL@reddit
🤣
ungloomy_Eeyore964@reddit
I know someone who named their daughter Precious, spelled Preshuss.
newhappyrainbow@reddit
I work with a guy named Passion. His siblings all have totally normal names.
Turbulent_Peach_9443@reddit
“Just say no”
ApprehensiveCream571@reddit
That is rough.
sxhnunkpunktuation@reddit
Nah, Chammys are soft.
MissTibbz@reddit
No, we all named them Olivia instead.
HowdIGetHere21@reddit (OP)
Mine is Mikayla
MissTibbz@reddit
It was a joke like yours about Stacy.
HowdIGetHere21@reddit (OP)
I know, 😉
BIGepidural@reddit
Oof...
yeah well.. not all of us...
HowdIGetHere21@reddit (OP)
That's not a bad thing! I mean, there could have been a whole generation of Stacey's, lol, just so we could play that song 😜
BIGepidural@reddit
You know whats crazy- I didn't even realize I did that until I was changing her diaper when that song came on and I was like "Holy shit" 🤯 lol
To be fair, we named her after her Polish grandmother, Stanislava and that turns into either Stella or Stacy for short and we chose Stacy because her grandmother used Stella so I did not do that with any intention 😂
HowdIGetHere21@reddit (OP)
That's even better! Lol
BIGepidural@reddit
Yup accidental awesomeness 😂
Pypsy143@reddit
My name isn’t super common but I didn’t want my daughter to be one of 5 in her class like the Jennifers, Michelles, and Melissas of our youth.
I gave her a real, but HIGHLY uncommon name for 2001 - Peyton.
Then thanks to stupid Peyton Manning coming onto the scene shortly thereafter, my poor daughter had to share her name with multiple girls AND BOYS in her class. Argh! I tried so hard!
HowdIGetHere21@reddit (OP)
I named my son Mackenzie, because I had it picked out for years after Mackenzie Astin, Sean's little brother. Little did I know it would become a popular girl's name! Ugh
BIGepidural@reddit
Dude I named my son Braedon in 20001 before the "aiden" everything trend when kids came out like fricken bobble eyed synonymed minions 🤦♀️ I feel your pain
Silly-Mountain-6702@reddit
those that come after know no end of horror and shame
r/tragedeigh
Coyote_Secret@reddit
Dear god…
dadofsummer@reddit
It’s still pronounced Urine, no matter how you spell it. This person only ever heard it pronounced as pee-pee apparently.
Silly-Mountain-6702@reddit
it's z, they've never heard science words, not part of tictok
dadofsummer@reddit
I thought the trend of the generations after us (X-73) was to use more medical like terminology when talking about “private areas”.
Silly-Mountain-6702@reddit
"terminology" has five syllables, it's a non starter, mate
OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit
I still occasionally think about the time I met a woman named Diariah.
Conscious-Magazine44@reddit
Oh my.
DragonMom81@reddit
I tried to stay off the top 100. 🤷🏼♀️
strugglingwell@reddit
This is what I did. So the names are uncommon, but not unheard of.
Mysterious-Ruby@reddit
I named my daughter after Billy Joel's daughter. Then Amazon stole it.
OreJen@reddit
OMG same! (Well, the song first introduced me to the name and I thought it was pretty. Unusual but not weird.)
Mysterious-Ruby@reddit
Exactly. Unusual but not too unusual. I love her name.
OreJen@reddit
Mine just goes by Lex now, lol
Mysterious-Ruby@reddit
Should we file a class action against Amazon for stealing our daughters name?
recruitzpeeps@reddit
Same. Sigh.
MrsBeauregardless@reddit
My three sisters and I were all in love with Billy Joel. When he married Christie Brinkley, my oldest sister said, “I hope she falls down and scratches her face.”
mazerbrown@reddit
I think we got so tired of Jennifer, Brittney Heather, Tiffany and Michelle that we rebelled.
FrauAmarylis@reddit
Crystal, Angela, Sherry, Brandy, Teresa, Kimberly.
Lots of those.
HLOFRND@reddit
I’m on that list and it was awful. 😭 There were four of us in my 3rd grade class. I don’t think there was ever a year where I was the only girl in the class with my name.
Littleleicesterfoxy@reddit
Yeah I’m a Michelle and there were four of us in my tutor group
Cobra-Lalalalalalala@reddit
Grass is always greener. I didn't meet someone else with the same name until I was like fuckin' 30. And that's still the only other one to this day. Having a 'unique' name...kinda sucks. "How do you spell that?" "What does it mean?" "Is it a family thing?" Jesus Christ, leave me alone!
Besides, every Jennifer I ever met was cool as fuck. Or maybe there were just so many and I'm only remembering the cool ones.
JohnnyCashMoneyGreen@reddit
Christy, Christine, kisten
depressedinthedesert@reddit
I’m a Heather and honestly I didn’t think it was popular, although my mother debated between Heather and Jennifer. When the movie Heathers came out I started hearing Heather all over the place. 😁
Ok_Schedule5017@reddit
I am a Jennifer so I definitely wasn’t doing that to my daughter.
ER_Support_Plant17@reddit
Same, I checked all potential names on the Social Security website. Nothing in the top 10 and nothing in the top 20 with a rising trend.
BizarroMax@reddit
Our daughters are Anneliese and Margaret.
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
My mom gave me the most popular name for girls for the year I was born. In every classroom there were a minimum of three other girls who had the same name as me. So I named my daughter after an Irish Goddess. Thus far, she hasn’t run across any other girls with her name. Unfortunately, most people mispronounce it, which annoys her to no end.
OreJen@reddit
I was almost named Rhiannon, but my mom and dad told his grandma who'd raised him. She said "What the hell kind of name is that?" And they named me Jennifer.
ER_Support_Plant17@reddit
Hi Jennifer!
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
🙋🏻♀️
DreadGrrl@reddit
That’s my sister’s name, too.
BIGepidural@reddit
My best friend has 3 sisters named Jen. A bio sister, a step sister and another step sister that was placed for adoption and named jen by the adoptive parents.
I'm not even kidding. Thats a real thing
ER_Support_Plant17@reddit
Yeah we’re pretty much the borg at this point
stuck_behind_a_truck@reddit
No, that’s “Hi Lisa!”
JenninMiami@reddit
Hello, fellow Jennifer! 🙌🏼
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
Howdy! 🤠
Street-Recording-513@reddit
One of them is a shitcake… enjoy!
AppropriateAmoeba406@reddit
I feel like high school was 50% Stacy, Laura, Sarah, Jennifer, and some version of Catherine.
MrsBeauregardless@reddit
Don’t forget Tracy, Kelly, and Heather.
BIGepidural@reddit
You rang?
Fire_Trashley@reddit
What did I miss? What’s wrong with the name Stacey?
MissMaryEli@reddit
Stacey’s mom has got it going on.
BIGepidural@reddit
Thats me. And yes I do 😅
Didn't realize what I did until after she was born 🤪
Mor_Ericks28@reddit
My daughter is Casey. I ALWAYS change the lyrics.
DogLady1722@reddit
My name is Tracy. ONE TIME, when that song first came out, my husband sang, “Tracy’s mom has got it goin on!”
Then he remembered that my mom, who is the biggest “B,” also isn’t exactly good looking…..
Then he changed it to, “Tracy’s the mom, who’s got it going on…”
Got sick of that REAL FAST!! 😂😂
Fire_Trashley@reddit
Ah. I thought it was something new.
RunRunRabbitRunovich@reddit
Nothing I’ve only ever met 2 Staci’s
SpookyBeck@reddit
I'm a rebecca with a daughter dahlia.
stacywebb@reddit
My name is Stacy. I’m a 54 yr old man. Parents were hippies. F*** that song.
S99B88@reddit
I think of Stacy Keach!
CallmeSlim11@reddit
Some people have too much free time.
fusionsofwonder@reddit
Shouldn't they all be Heathers?
slasherbobasher@reddit
My daughter’s name isn’t Stacy but I still have it going on! Or so I delude myself. :D
CyndiIsOnReddit@reddit
I named my daughter after my mom. Laura. It's a beautiful name that wasn't very popular at the time.
InsectAggravating656@reddit
I named my daughter Carsyn because of Phoebe Cate's character in Shag (Carson) 🤣
Fickle-Milk-450@reddit
Now there’s a movie that doesn’t get enough love! Harley Ralston wasn’t a bad name either.
No_Breadfruit_7305@reddit
I have an Abigail
73rd-virgin@reddit
Now I'm thinking about King Diamond.
LadybugCalico@reddit
Me too!
sugarlump858@reddit
My kids have normal names. The first name is hyphenated, though. My brother's first name is hyphenated, and I always thought that was cool.
shechemistOr@reddit
Thanks cuz I am tired.
Simple-Purpose-899@reddit
Did you know there are at least 29 ways ways to spell the name that sounds like "Kayley", and that's only the ones starting with K? Yeah, our daughter does hah!
azlulu@reddit
I named mine after a tomato. It really fits her.
DogLady1722@reddit
Hothouse? Beefsteak? Grape? Heirloom? Roma? Cherry?!
WHAT IS IT?!! 😂😂
(Mulva…IYKYK!)
azlulu@reddit
Roma
Mulva! I haven't heard that in years!!
DogLady1722@reddit
I love Roma Maffia, the actress!
My husband never watched Seinfeld.
I had to explain that the other day to him. One of his friends said Mulva, when another said they had forgotten someone’s name.
azlulu@reddit
I didn't know about that Roma. Roma Downey was an actress people asked if I named her after.
Nope. Just the tomato, the city, a weird dream I had when I was pregnant. She says she can't have any other name.
DogLady1722@reddit
Our daughter’s name is Emily.
She was our infant foster.
Our 5yr old couldn’t say “Serenity.” He kept calling her “Sir Emily.” Plus he was into Clifford the Big Red Dog at the time!
As soon as she was freed at one year old, we named her Emily!
That son is almost 24, and our daughter is 17. Our son still occasionally reminds her that he named her!!
azlulu@reddit
May all of the good things in this life and the next be given to you all!
You're amazing.
DogLady1722@reddit
Awww thank you so much!
And to you also!
🙏🏻❤️
DogLady1722@reddit
Oh I loved “Touched by an Angel,” with Roma Downey!
It’s awesome when you have a special reason for your kid’s names! I’m glad she loves it!
I’m going to copy/paste my daughter’s name story here.
PithandKin@reddit
“Beefsteak , dinner’s ready!” 😂
azlulu@reddit
Goddammit Roma! Now what did you break!
DogLady1722@reddit
😂😂
JohnnyCashMoneyGreen@reddit
My kid is named Michael. It goes way back. To like the 50s lmao
Mysterious-Vehicle72@reddit
My ex (thankfully) stopped me from making our youngest child’s name: “M’alee” and went with the usual spelling of Emily.
PahzTakesPhotos@reddit
My sister-in-law is named Stacy. (there's almost 16 years between her and my husband. They were not raised together).
Unfortunately, she wasn't in the age group for the song and neither was my mother-in-law.
We have a fairly common last name, so I gave my daughters names they could nick if they married someone and took a less common last name. Kathrine and Christine. We've always called Kathrine "Kathy" and she goes by "Kat" at work and when she was in college. Christine has always been Christine and even as a preschooler, was vehemently opposed to being called anything shortened from it. (except for "Teeny". My husband calls her that).
LogicalStomach@reddit
I know 12 Katherines, 6 Christines, and 13 Christinas total - - friends, acquaintances, and people via work. Christine/a #20 I kept accidentally calling Sarah or Rosina. I think it's because I didn't have room in my brain for another Christine/a.
Thanks goodness for the 2 that go by Tina.
PahzTakesPhotos@reddit
My Kathrine knew 11 Ashleys (one was Ashleigh) and 6 Sara/hs. My Christine was the only one in her class, which was surprising.
My son is Jason and I really expected there to be more Jasons, but the popular boy name at the time was Josh/Joshua.
My kids are millennials- Kat is 35, Jason is 33, and Christine will be 32 next month (there's 2 1/2 years between Kat and Jason, but barely 16 months between Jason and Christine).
ContessaChaos@reddit
Some of y'all got too cutesy with the spellings. Now, look at the /r/tragedeigh generations. LOL.
worshipperofdogs@reddit
My name was the fifteenth most popular the year I was born. My daughter’s name wasn’t even in the top 200 (but is a “real” name and normal spelling), but it’s moved up almost 100 spots since then. I wish my mom had been just a little more creative.
FickleAcadia7068@reddit
I have a Lillian
middlingachiever@reddit
Any parents of a Kevin?
DogLady1722@reddit
“Kevina?”
“That’s exotic!”
Like in that 1985 movie “Just One of the Guys.”
middlingachiever@reddit
More like the Soundgarden song Full on Kevin’s Mom. Much better than the Stacey song.
DogLady1722@reddit
I’ll have to listen to that.
I was just going with the “Daughter’s name” theme!😂
DogLady1722@reddit
Wow interesting!
Lots of theories as to what it means, I see.
MrsBeauregardless@reddit
No! All the Kevins I knew were mean.
Automatic-Record7385@reddit
We named our daughter based on what her nickname would be. The name had to be fitting for both young and old people. So, we decided on Margaret. I am so glad we did. She is one hell of a Maggie. She is kind, but she will take you down a peg or two if you look at her cross-eyed.
Julios_on_50th@reddit
My daughter’s name is Emily. She is awesome!

Sir Emily! Love it! What a sweet family you have 👏🏻
DogLady1722@reddit
Awww thanks!
queenofcaffeine76@reddit
Mine is Emilee. Husband wanted a nontraditional spelling and I wasn't about to have a tragedeigh on my hands so I told him Emilee or Emilie, those were the options.
TealTemptress@reddit
My kid renamed herself a planet.
Affectionate-Map2583@reddit
I hope it wasn't Uranus.
DogLady1722@reddit
OMFG I just fell off my bed!!
TealTemptress@reddit
The one with the rings.
I got a tattoo commemorating her changing to her gay name.
MrsBeauregardless@reddit
My daughters have cool names, I think. One thing I think is funny, all the girl names that, as a child, I planned on naming my daughters were the cool names when I started having daughters, so they were off my list.
I often wonder if everyone named their daughters Olivia because of Olivia on Sesame Street, because she was totally the reason I loved that name.
Melekai_17@reddit
OMFG. I just realized my generation is responsible for the “using y in place of any other vowel in names” fiasco. Whyyyy? I don’t have girls but if I had she was going to be named Madeleine.
Playful-Escape-9212@reddit
i apparently do not "got it goin' on", because i did not name her that. We gave both our kids (one of each gender) each a "fancy/formalish" name and a short one so they could choose.
Former_Influence_904@reddit
