This is the story of Swedish diplomat Folke Bernadotte:

Folke Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg (2 January 1895 – 17 September 1948) was a Swedish nobleman and diplomat. In World War II, he negotiated the release of about 450 Danish Jews and 30,550 non-Jewish prisoners of many nations from the Nazi German Theresienstadt concentration camp.

On May 14, 1948 – the day that Israel declared its independence – the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 186, which established the United Nations Mediator in Palestine with the responsibility to “promote a peaceful adjustment of the future situation in Palestine.” Six days later, Foke Bernadotte was unanimously chosen to be the United Nations Security Council mediator in the Arab–Israeli conflict of 1947–1948.

He was assassinated in Jerusalem on September 17, 1948 while seated in the last car of a three-car convoy flying the UN flag that was on route to Jerusalem. He was murdered by Yehuda Cohen, who was a leader of the paramilitary Zionist group Lehi (aka Stern Gang). Yehuda Cohen was also the unofficial body guard of the first prime minister of Israel, David Grün (aka David Ben Gurion).

The following day, LEHI (aka Stern Gang and predecessor of the IDF) sent a letter to the press stating that:

“In our opinion all United Nations observers are members of foreign occupation forces, which have no right to be on our territory.”

Folke Bernadotte was seen by the Provisional government of Israel (lead by David Grün) as a danger to the ambitions of the Zionists to establish a state on both sides of the Jordan river.

Although the identity of the murderers remained unclear for the broad public, it soon became obvious that LEHI was responsible. For UK and Swedish intelligences services (and higher ups in the diplomatic corps) it was an open secret that Cohen was behind the killing.

Salient detail:

When Swedish economist and diplomat Dag Hammarskjöld, the then second secretary-general of the United Nations, travelled to Israel in 1958 in the role of a mediator in the Suez crisis between David Ben-Gurion and Gamal Abdel Nasser, and visited Ben-Gurion at his Negev home.

Ben-Gurion’s decision to seat Cohen at the diner table —a man implicated in the murder of a Folke Bernadotte —next to Hammarskjöld was not only perceived as a deliberate affront by the UN secretary, it was also an open threat to the latter, which was well understood and clearly acknowledged when Hammarskjöld loudly stated: “I will never come here again.”.

This is at least 30% not even including those who would support Israel for practical reasons. I mean the only people they are bombing is Hamas and before that Hezbollah. Both of those Iranian proxies who we are also against. If we stopped supporting them we lose an ally and gain practically nothing. We were never going to have a good relationship with the Iran axis anyways. I mean I'm not saying the middle east is widely peaceful or anything and Israel was literally begging the US to coordinate air strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities a few weeks back. They are literally the most bloodthristy nation state in the region.

Also I find it funny and a bit saddening you subscribe to propaganda from the most immoral army with documented open hostility towards journalism and diplomacy. The UN estimates the Palestinian death toll to be above 53 000, over half of which are women and children. Are those all Hamas insurgents? I don't think you're that stupid to believe that. I mean the money we give to Israel is really not that significant compared to what we spend on our military already or our total budget. We haven't really been dragged into any conflicts by them up to this point, mainly just supplied them with weapons with which they struck mutual enemies. Calling them the most immoral army is a bit much don't you think? Are they really less moral then Russia, China, or Iran. I mean we are allies with countries all over who have far less freedom of the press then Israel, it would be a bit ridiculous to view that as a deal breaker. They seem to be perfectly fine with diplomacy towards their neighbors not aligned with Iran. Yes the death toll is tragic, and I'm sure many civilians died too, bombing a dense urban area will cause that. I think Israel winning is best for everyone compared to Hamas or Hezbollah if you think that makes me evil or stupid so be it.

Yes. And that's coming from an Eastern European from a country with history of Russian oppression and the looming threat of invasion and destabilization by Putin. Other armies don't hold their enemies in such casual contempt that they film gender reveal demolitions or tiktoks mocking children for not having access to food. They don't storm prisons where soldiers who committed abhorrent warcrimes such as raping civilian prisoners of war. Nobody else has this level of vitriol and entitlement. Russia does war crimes but is not THIS indignant and entitled about it. Israel isn't even in a symmetrical war, they're literally shooting fish in a barrel and crying about it when people call them out on war crimes. They want their cake (both physical and cultural genocide of Palestinians) and eat it too (unlimited political, military and financial support of western allies with zero condemnation or sympathy towards towards Palestinian civilians).

Diplomats go there and Israel has the gaul to tell them in not-their-land where they can go and apparently when they step out of the zone of interest (because diplomats could actually not see the crime in the authorized path), shoot. The Israeli military fired warning shots at a large delegation of European and Arab diplomats on an official visit near the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, drawing swift international condemnation.

Delegations from more than 20 countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Canada and others, were on an official mission to see the humanitarian situation around the besieged camp, according to the Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which called the incident a “deliberate and unlawful act.”

Video from the incident shows Israeli soldiers firing toward the delegation as it backs away from a gate blocking the road. At least seven shots can be heard in the video. One member of the delegation cautions the group, “be close to the wall, be close to the wall,” as they walk away from the scene.

“The ministry holds the Israeli occupying government fully and directly responsible for this criminal assault and affirms that such acts will not pass without accountability,” the Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the visit to the camp - the site of a major ongoing military operation that has destroyed more than 100 buildings and impacted thousands of families - was coordinated in advance. The military said it launched an initial investigation once it became clear that the group was a diplomatic delegation.

“The delegation deviated from the approved route and entered an area where they were not authorized to be,” the military said in a statement Wednesday.

“IDF soldiers operating in the area fired warning shots to distance them away.”

The IDF said it will reach out to the delegations about the findings of the initial inquiry and “regrets the inconvenience caused.”

The Palestinian Authority said the visit was announced 10 days in advance and that the group had been at the gate for more than 15 minutes before Israeli soldiers started shooting.

Roland Friedrich, the director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in the West Bank, refuted the Israeli military’s version of events, saying that its explanations “do not fully capture the severity of today’s event.”

“This incident is a stark reminder of the lax use of excessive force routinely deployed by Israeli security forces in the West Bank, often with lethal consequences,” Friedrich said. “This raises serious concerns over the way rules of engagement are applied to unarmed civilians.”

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, said after the incident that “any threats on diplomats’ lives are unacceptable.”

“We definitely call on Israel to investigate this incident and also hold those accountable who are responsible for this,” Kallas said at a press conference Wednesday.

Italy’s foreign ministry summoned Israel’s ambassador in Rome for an official clarification.

“The threats against diplomats are unacceptable,” the country’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani added in a social media post on X.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said that Israel’s ambassador to France would also be summoned following the incident, calling it “unacceptable,” while Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said that his government summoned the head of the Israeli embassy in Madrid.

On Wednesday evening, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen told CNN’s Isa Soares that her country will be summoning the Israeli ambassador to Finland in response to the military’s actions.

“Any deviation of any route – it is not an excuse,” Valtonen said. “It is prohibited to open fire against civilians, even under the laws of war. And, of course, these people were also under diplomatic protection.”

A host of officials from other European nations condemned the shooting, including representatives from Ireland, Belgium, Slovenia, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and the United Kingdom.

Foreign ministries from countries including Jordan, Egypt, Turkey and Qatar also strongly condemned the incident.

“This attack, which endangered the lives of diplomats, is yet another demonstration of Israel’s systematic disregard for international law and human rights,” Turkey’s foreign ministry said.

“The targeting of diplomats constitutes a grave threat not only to individual safety but also to the mutual respect and trust that form the foundation of inter-state relations. This attack must be investigated without delay, and those responsible must be held accountable,” it added.

Clarification: This story has been updated to reflect the shooting incident occurred near the Jenin refugee camp, not within the camp.
