Well he's not wrong. I'm taking an online math class. The teacher says I need to use adobe app to upload my assignments. Long story short the app requires a subscription to use and even when I get the fucking subscription it will not upload the assignments to the shit college website. I email her that it doesn't work and I am frustrated that I have spent more time figuring out how to upload the assignments than learning about math. She emails me that it should work and gives me a link to the app. About as helpful as a fucking hole in the head.

I spent three years studying history in my twenties, dropped out and have now been pursuing an engineering degree for a year and a half or so. Some of the classes have an online option so I've been doing a lot of prerequisite courses at night after work. The public education system here sucks. There's little to no incentive for teachers to be, for lack of a better term, good teachers. As long as your class is passing and you do nothing controversial, you can hit tenure and be lazy AF for the rest of your career. There are awesome teachers , and they certainly make an impact and did in my life, but overall it's a machine-like system designed to crank out worker pawns that can, at bare minimum, be a functioning member of society.

where the hell do you live where teachers leave at 3pm and have summers off? most teachers stay way longer than 3pm grading, preparing lessons and maintaining contact with their students' parents(unpaid). Its not uncommon for teachers to spend most of their weekends and vacations working as well(unpaid). even then the real question is whether they earn enough money to even get by. there are plenty of stories of students seeing their teachers working a job in retail during summer break to get the bills paid.

Fortunately, I'm a teacher in an Asian country where people actually care about learning. But, something you should consider is that lots of teachers take grading home or stay late planning, preparing, and grading, so the end of the school day is rarely the end of a teacher's work for the day.

At my school, we are expected to sign up to teach summer classes, so I teach year-round (and that's while having two jobs).

Unfortunately, I've seen both local and non-native teachers reinforce bad grammar and spelling mistakes. There are some native English speakers from the West that don't belong in teaching or that make too many mistakes, but you're obviously improperly generalizing. Your comment sounds jealous and toxic.

But it reminds me of the time in China that an employer showed me their star teacher from "Canada" and she was Russian (obviously born there). Thick Russian accent and grammar problems. Those are the people we should be condemning (the fake native speaker and the business).

My issue isn't even with whether they're teaching them correctly, my issue is specifically that hard earned money is going into unearned hands by virtue of those hands being white.

You yourself acknowledge that many are unprofessional. I've met professional teachers who I liked. I still didn't think they were actually necessary for English education and that their roles would've been better suited by just having kids read books from a young age, on their own.

The unprofessional teachers weren't just bad at English, they shouldn't be anywhere near kids. Back when i was tutoring, one of my calculus students told me that his English teacher at a public elementary school called a kid "a fucking idiot" for walking in on him while he was testing a kid.

You're right about racism being an important component. It's well-known that White teachers tend to get paid more than POC.

I believe the greatest benefit of having a Western Native English Speaker as a teacher is for teaching pronunciation and irregular expressions that don't seem to follow grammar rules.

Unfortunately, public schools in Asia tend to have the least-qualified and perhaps least-professional foreign teachers. The first foreigner I met in Vietnam was a public school teacher from a random non-English speaking African country. He seemed like a nice guy, but I wouldn't want my kid learning English from him either. It would probably be worse than just having an educated local teach him English.

I don't think it's even that long ago that a very qualified black teacher from America was kicked out of the school because he was black. The mothers complained and stated that they should be getting their money's worth. Just completely shameless behavior that made me embarrassed to be korean.

Truth is, I agree with you, and think a native speaker is necessary to actually fine tune some stuff. The only thing is that I feel as though most east asians don't actually need to be super fluent in English, and that that time is better spent developing other skills, and that at a certain point it's diminishing returns.

You'll notice that to this day, Koreans will use English words to make thing seem more 'modern', so I feel as though the unnecessary emphasis on English stems from an inferiority complex dating back to when korea was a underdeveloped shit hole.

I feel as though people like 'tyler' famous English teacher, intentionally preys on this type of stuff and peddles nonsense like

"Americans don't say hello, they say good morning, if you say hello, they'll think you're weird and bad at english"

Unfortunately, it's difficult for a Black person to be hired at my school as well (but not impossible). The White assistant directors are actually not to blame, but the locals in the Board of Directors. That's similar to your experience, I suppose.

However, my English center has many Black teachers and they are better teachers than many of the White teachers that I know. I think being aware of the race issues pushes them to try harder out of necessity.

Well, I think about English being used to make a place look fancy is comparable to using French for an American restaurant. It's not only Korea that does that.

The workload and work-stress situation is not quite so simple. There's a reason why many of my colleagues would dread to teach kindergarten and even first grade. Those lower levels demand a lot more in-class energy and creative planning for stimulating activities. I don't mean to disrespect the students, but it's a lot like herding animals that often don't want to be herded around unless something is very exciting to them.

The benefit of upper-primary and older students is less in-class energy and arts and craft creativity needed by the teacher but the trade-off is having to grade more written work and taking home more grading. Each age group has its unique challenges.

My school is not like that, but I've worked at schools with high student workloads before. I don't have a strong opinion about it. If your kid gets light homework but you have some other activities to keep them busy, that's fine. But if they're focused on Italian Brainrot and Skibidi Toilet and semi-perverted Anime every evening, then the homework until 11 pm would be a better alternative.

I teach band to beginners, have longer summers than most teachers, and never take anything home to grade ever since the class is skill-based. I'm expected to offer summer tutoring but nobody ever signs up for it since the regular class already costs money. After this week I'm becoming terminally online for 4 months, will still be paid in that time, and will start my classes again in September.
