Do you know anyone who fell down a conspiracy rabbit hole during COVID? What are they doing now?

I remember quite a lot of people online saying lockdown will never end etc. I'd love to speak to them now.

I would love to speak to them too, but all of them left my life for good after I had the Covid shot and supported it openly on Facebook. I am at my 7th dose now and no way are those people coming near me, THAT concentration of nanobots would kill them on the spot, or worse :D I have in the meantime recovered from losing most of my social bubble, and realized it had been the wrong one all along.

My partner worked in a call centre shortly after the last lockdwn ended and had one caller who INSISTED everyone who got the vaccine would be dead within 5 years, and most would be dead within 3. I do wonder what he's thinking now and how he's going to feel in a year's time when the supposed deathdate will have passed for most.

SolkaPL@reddit

Oh I had the same thing about me. That I have 3 years left of living. Once I've passed those 3 years I was told that it is actually 6 years. From time to time I hear now that 'it will eventually happen'. In my mind I do think that once I reach 80 and I got cancer, they will tell me that this is all due to covid vaccine.

It's actually 6 years or they've used boosters or 5G to cancel/delay the death as they have a more sinister plan now or something nonsense like that. Whatever happens he won't admit he was wrong

New theory time! We did all die from the vaccine, (stay with me!) and now we're all stuck in a purgatory, one where we all work ourselves to death and the cost of living increases dramatically and unpredictability every few weeks.

The current UFO whistleblower grifters have all spent the past 2 years chatting about catastrophic disclosure whilst providing easily debunked pictures, they went to months , then a fortnight and when nothing happened and the supposed whistleblowers didn’t provide any evidence it’s suddenly 2027 and it is all mystical and gods n angels that defy basic observation so that’s why no evidence . It’s bizarre but people keep paying for seminar tickets n buying books. as an aside if the world is invaded by aliens in 2027 I will die with apologies on my lips.

There's also a hearing in Japan today. Mexico had some last year And you're right, lots of their govt people have been very interested in the topic, for a very long time, some fascinating quotes here https://www.uap.guide/quotes/introduction I mean we had an official UFO office until 2009 (Nick Pope & co) I suspect it's less public now and likely any actual investigatuve work we've outsourced to the Americans, especially since the Rendlesham incident

Yeah Maussan is a parasite of this topic and has been for decades. Hijacks every avenue possible for his own publicity and hoaxes. That was not the intention of those hearings though, and literally occupied the last 10 minutes. Essentially noone (aside from one Mexican senator) was aware that was going to take place. Completely overshadowed the prior discussion and left Ryan graves embarrassed.

When I got my first dose of the vaccine, the woman who was administering it explained it all to me and asked me if I had any questions. I said I did not, and she seemed to express some relief over this as some of the questions she was getting were completely crazy. Yes. Me. I fell down the rabbit hole. Honestly, I still think we weren’t told the full truth about Covid. I never believed the outlandish shit like glowing blood or the vaccine making you magnetic. However the story that it happened naturally, didn’t come from a lab, and that the only possible solution was a “vaccine” (in truth most were new gene therapies actually) was something I was always highly skeptical of. It showed me the media is a tool used my government and big Pharma. Your life isn’t as important to them as profits. The medical establishment isn’t here to promote health. No one said get out and exercise, eat well, take vitamin c, and reduce factors that increase comorbidity. I think the “conspiracy theorist” tag was used liberally as a means of discrediting critical or independent thought. I’m not sitting here with a tinfoil hat, but they showed their hand that it’s profits over lives, that they aren’t beyond lies, and that most people will blindly follow authority. I recall having classic whooping cough and being told I had covid. A little digging uncovered my doctors got paid 3x more if they treated me as a Covid patient vs a whooping cough patient. I called them out on it and told them they’re a disgrace. They didn’t care. I lost all faith. All of this said, where am I now? I watch far less news. I’ve started running and eating much better. I treat my health as my responsibility so far as I am able to. I’ve not been sick or been to a doctor in two years, thankfully. I moved to a place with better air, less stress, more nature. Life is good. I follow the philosophy of “tend to your own garden”.

View on Reddit #56909650

CustomerNo1338@reddit

I hate to leave you with a “trust me”, but I did the effort to find it circa 4-5 years ago. So I don’t have the primary source anymore. However I found an NHS document which detailed payments a practice would receive when diagnosing a Covid patient. I compared to the standard and there was a circa 3x uplift if i remeber correctly. One could argue it’s because it cost more to diagnose and treat, but it also unfortunately created incentive to diagnose any respiratory illnesses observed as Covid. They were however paid an additional £12.58 per covid vaccine given. Considering most practices receive around £150 per patient per year, that’s a circa 8% uplift alone.
View on Reddit #56944394

torontodon@reddit

I worked in the nhs in GP practices for 30+ years including 15+ years as a manager of a practice and some of those during covid and most of those years were working on the finances of multiple practices and can tell you that they are not paid for giving any diagnoses to patients. So I’d be very interested to see any evidence you can provide of this that isn’t faked. GP surgeries are paid for giving ALL vaccines to encourage them to ensure that patients get all necessary ones and pay for the staff to run those clinics etc (so right from childhood vaccines through to flu & pneumonia jabs). Can you imagine how many extra clinics and staff costs (both medical and admin to book appointments, be there when the clinic was open etc) surgeries had to endure as many people as possible got the vaccines? They are paid for giving vaccines just as they are paid for meeting targets to give smears, contraceptive advice, ensure diabetics are seen regularly etc to ensure these areas isn’t neglected.
View on Reddit #56945593

CustomerNo1338@reddit

Okay, so can you tell me with certainty that GP practices were NOT provided extra funding for treating a person with Covid, during the pandemic?
View on Reddit #56950807

torontodon@reddit

I am not aware of any funding for treating individual patients with Covid. Do you know any different? I know there were funds which could be applied for for surgeries which had extra costs due to Covid ie overtime for staff for extra clinics. Extra costs for home or nursing home visits etc
View on Reddit #56988329

CustomerNo1338@reddit

Maybe I need to stand corrected. I can’t find the source, despite a few hours of hunting. I swear on my life and that of my family that I read an nhs official document from their site detailing increased payment rates for treating patients with Covid. I’d shared it with family and we had discussions about how it creates a bad incentive. I know this sounds like a cop out but I think many of the docs that were publicly available at the time were either since removed or retracted. I’ve seen many cases of that since. Things I know for a fact I’ve read seem to vanish. Videos I’d watched also just vanish. More so on the Covid topic than others but I’ve seen it occur elsewhere. For now, I’ll change my opinion then.
View on Reddit #56992339

torontodon@reddit

Sorry for the delay- I was looking into this as much as I could and asking people who worked in GP practices during COVID etc and put simply could find nothing backing payment per diagnosis etc. were you able to find anything? To be honest even if they did exist and were then taken down from the NHS websites (which would be weird as I can easily find evidence of things like the scheme I mentioned even though that’s not still running) I’d expect someone somewhere to have put it on the internet.

View on Reddit #56921984

It’s been proven to have come out of a lab, yet because people were told that wasn’t the case, they go on supporting that stance long beyond the reality coming to light. Yeah they probably were. For the reasons I’ve just said above lol. They are absolute leeches. It doesn’t mean there wasn’t a virus that was killing people though… both things can be true. Ultimately, people can only take responsibility for themselves - make your own choices. But most anti-covid people I know will actively avoid hugging/kissing others if they have a common cold because they don’t want to catch it. It’s the same thing. I’m not saying you needed to have a vaccine - you can make you own decision on that - but to basically dismiss the whole thing and act like it didn’t matter because ‘Pfizer’ is selfish and ignorant.

I had two, and i don't think covid was fake. I do have some non-Reddit-approved covid opinions though. e.g. I suspect a lot of the restrictions etc didn't make a blind bit of difference to the eventual outcome. Isn't it weird that this was basically our entire lives in 2020 and 2021 and now we barely talk about it? And when we do talk about it, it all sounds completely mad?
View on Reddit #56923274

Jaded_Valuable439@reddit

Because it was mad. It was a mental time and none of us knew what the fuck we were doing. The restrictions probably did make a difference to the spread though. Of course it did. How do viruses spread? By contact with other people… reduce the contact and reduce the spread. The problem was, like you eluded to, is that the big billionaires and the government who were making money of this situation weren’t following the same rules as the rest of us. And now it’s caused divide and fascism. Look at us now, sat on Reddit posting paragraphs and calling each other idiots (not me and you directly but the comments as a whole) - instead of going - hang on, something isn’t fucking right here

Your take is so interesting. I never considered myself an antivax but I didn’t understand why the vaccine would be enforced to someone (for example if you wanted to travel) if you already have had covid two times and could prove it with a simple blood test? The vaccine would be useless in this situation as you had been already exposed. I got vaccinated and all, but, like you, I felt they treated people like cattle, I had covid twice before the vaccine rollout, and I had covid at least once more after being vaxed, similar symptoms all times. I would love a debate on this enforcement without falling into conspiracy holes.
View on Reddit #56901379

CustomerNo1338@reddit

Another great point. All the studies andI’ve seen on it and virologists I’ve listened to speak to better outcomes for people with natural immunity when compared to the vaccines. The only reason i can see force a vaccine on persons with natural immunity is profit. There was so so much profit for Pharma, and I’m sure there were substantial handouts to policy makers, or through stocks they’d bought. For what it’s worth, i was never anti vax either. I think vaccines aren’t without their own risks though. As a simple example my dog developed a chicken allergy directly after his second round of vaccines. So I did a deep dive into medical literature and it’s a known phenomenon that if you introduce certain proteins while a vaccine triggers an immune storm, the immune system may misidentify that protein as harmful and attack it. I digress though. I think my central point is that it was less of a public health act and more about lining pockets.

Fyi, there are no gene therapies against covid. The concept is nonsensical: covid does not integrate into the genome, so there's nothing for gene therapies to do. (mRNA vaccines are not gene therapies.)
View on Reddit #56899379

SisterRayRomano@reddit

An ex-colleague who I had as a 'friend' on Facebook started to post increasingly unhinged stuff daily on Facebook sometime in 2020 once the news cycle focused on the development of Covid-19 vaccines. It was like watching someone lose their mind completely in real time. His posts started out some mild skepticism that wasn't out of the ordinary (posts about news articles discussing potential side-effects of vaccines, which were widely reported in the mainstream media when all the trials were happening), but that phase didn't last long, and his posts stared getting weirder. It then turned to the most common kind of vaccine misinformation that you see across social media (cherry-picked sentences from journal articles meant for qualified health professionals plucked out of context by a lay person - "spike proteins", "mRNA"). Then it snowballed, and he started posting numerous articles and videos that he'd found on obscure websites that mentioned Bill Gates and microchips being injected into people to control them. The last I saw, it turned into numerous rants about George Soros and a "cabal" of people conspiring to create a 'new world order' - full-blown antisemitic conspiracy theory nonsense on the level of David Icke. This guy was well-educated, seemingly totally normal before (we got on really well at work) and he's the last person I would have expected to fall for all this stuff, but he was fully radicalised by social media misinformation as far as I'm concerned and it was sad. He completely trashed his own reputation (I saw many people, including colleagues and former colleagues calling out his bullshit as this went on). I stopped using Facebook shortly after so didn't see what came after, but last I heard from an old colleague, his wife left him because he was so obsessed with this stuff and wouldn't stop going on about it 24/7.

Former work colleague who i worked with way before Covid and got on well with so remained connected via fb. When the first Covid vaccines appeared he started posting stuff like ‘I still work in pharmaceuticals, and these vaccines have come out too quickly, if you aren’t in an at risk group you should consider if you want to get one’ Eventually I got bored of seeing this so I muted him from my feed. Fast forward to about a year ago (when I had forgotten about this) I thought to myself, I haven’t heard from (Dave) in a while, let’s see what he’s up to He was now so far down every conspiracy rabbit hole you can think of that he had lost his job, wife and kids had left him and he was now fronting a podcast and selling nasal sprays that would counteract vaccines. I hope he sorts himself out, he was a nice guy and good colleague

I’m a clinical scientist. My conspiracy-theorist, drug-addled cousin didn’t pass his GCSEs. Despite this, he’s pretty adamant the ‘scientists’ he gets his information from are legit, that his ‘research methods’ are more robust than mine, and that I’m merely a Big Pharma shill (would love to know when I’m supposed to expect my commission)
View on Reddit #56864692

CanStatus6714@reddit

And I'm a student at a top UK university and it's been my experience debating with 'scientists' online that they lack any knowledge of scientific epistemology, and are unable to think holistically far outside of their discipline. This is why as someone with ADHD who healed ADHD by healing trauma, I have everyone from the gullible masses to neuroscientists telling me trauma doesn't cause ADHD and my lived experience is a lie, purely because they don't have the capacity to combine knowledge of epigenitics, brain plasticity, trauma, and psychoanalysis. Oh but they're great at performing statistical analysis and engaging in extreme reductionism. So your arrogance is greater than your brother's ignorance.
View on Reddit #57046323

JennyW93@reddit

I actually do believe that trauma is the crux of many cognitive processing and neurodivergent disorders, and a lot of my work has involved interdisciplinary work because I agree that our current norm is too siloed and lacks holistic insight. But despite having got my PhD at a top UK university and then working in several, I’ve never once described myself as “a student at a top UK university”, because that’s a statement dripping with arrogance. But you do you, mate.
View on Reddit #57046593

CanStatus6714@reddit

Sorry I meant cousin. And yes I'm aware that interdisciplinary work exists, but I don't just mean within science. We must combine science with psychoanalysis, and even metaphysics. Yet mainstream science hasn't even been able to link epigenetics with brain plasticity and development, which is basic undergraduate knowledge. There was once a study showing the use of hypnosis instead of anaesthetics for a surgery, and the observing clinicians muttered to themselves that it must have been staged. A woman with stage 4 cancer once experienced spontaneous remission and her doctors concluded that there was never any cancer in the first place, because that's somehow easier to reconcile than unexpected remission. Just like the same people who told me I couldn't heal ADHD now tell me I never had it in the first place. I also healed IBD through probiotics way before it was even looked into in the mainstream. It's clear I've got my own personal axe to grind, but the rot in the system is undeniable. Anything that can't be taken apart and reduced down to easily reproducible components and chalked up in a report is not just ignored, but dismissed and attacked. So the reason I replied to you at all is because I want people to know that ignorance exists at all echelons. Your cousin who failed his GCSEs cant be expected to understand epigenitics but scientists are. I apologise for attacking you, but my attack is on the mainstream culture within academia as a whole. There are many scientists who do understand and speak out, but guess what? They're the ones slandered in the media as quacks and frauds.

OK, cool. I will take your objection seriously for a moment. The big disaster for a government, from a tax POV, is when highly skilled people and moderately wealthy people leave. (The super-wealthy leaving is not necessarily so bad as their tax affairs are usually pretty well screen from government interference already.) So anyway, if, say, doctors are leaving, after the nation has spent money training them, that would indeed be bad news. But my point is that the biggest fans of conspiracy theories are not usually in the comfortable upper-middle income and education brackets. It's usually Gazza from down the pub isn't it? If Gazza and friends were to leave (spoiler: they won't) the economic consequences would be negligible to positive.

Maybe your hanging around the wrong people? What I appreciate with theoriest vs non is they are usually more open to question things, not just accept things. Not all theorists believe everything theorists spout either , but the people I associate with are able to have normal conversations without insulting others. How does your system work when high educated people, rich people leave and people stop having kids. It kind of collapses at some point, who pays for the retired? Who funds government projects? look at what's coming for Italy, Japan, and especially south Korea.

Why is it "my system"? Sure, you're right, a bunch of countries are going to have (or are already having) demographic crises in coming years. But that's not got a lot to do with the fucking relentness dumbness of conspiracy theorists. No doubt you will now classify me in the "insulting others" category but I can assure you if you knew how many hours of my life I have wasted trying to gently educate people who believe patently false things you would hopefully grant me the right to be a bit pissed off.
View on Reddit #56957821

Fullofpizzaapie@reddit

Its not your system, but your statement. I wouldn't call everyone on the other side of the fence that doesn't exist, wise either. Just because people don't classify themselves as a theorist doesn't automatically make them have a higher iq. I prefer people who are willing to question anything and find out for themselves vs people who would rather live with blinders on and then say, oh.... There's no way I could have seen this coming. Don't you recall all this huffing and puffing from legacy media in the 90s about 'over population ' there are going to be too many people etc etc when in fact the opposite is true. Back then you would have been classified as a theorist, when maybe you did your hmwk and are smart. I don't see how insulting anyone makes a point, besides someone not having self restraint. Have you ever learned anything that was true from the theorist?
View on Reddit #56958610

jtr99@reddit

When you say "theorist" I assume you're talking about "conspiracy theorists"? It seems to me you're setting up a false dichotomy. Surely there is a happy medium somewhere between being an unthinking drone who never questions the status quo at all, versus being an irritatingly smug idiot who after half an hour online thinks they've discovered something that all the world's earlier scientists and thinkers have missed? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Recent history sadly tells us that the average person is not great at evaluating sources, thinking critically, or appropriately deciding when to adopt a tentative theory as probably true, or vice versa, when to drop a much-loved truth as probably false. Bayes theorem gives us a fantastic basis for reasoning about these sorts of questions, but regrettably it doesn't get talked about by many people except statisticians, and even among them it's not universally popular. Now you may see all this as a failure of education -- on that we would agree. "Theorists" who have anything valuable to contribute (i.e., good scientists and philosophers) don't behave like the normal conspiracy theorist. They don't cling to some wild and self-evidently kooky idea. They don't imagine themselves to be keepers of secret knowledge, known only to a discerning few. Instead the best of them tend to be modest, to acknowledge the possibility that they could be wrong, to seek to put their views to the test in the fire of empirical observation, and to do their best to explain their ideas clearly to others. In my experience most conspiracy theorists are unhappy people who feel somewhat powerless in the face of global events (don't we all?) and retreat into a kind of delusion about grand conspiracies in order to feel as though they are part of some secret society. To feel important, basically. They look forward to the day the whole social edifice comes crashing down, so that they can say "See! I told you! I told you George Soros was funding Jewish space lasers!" They haven't really considered that they will fare no better than the rest of us in the ensuing Mad-Max wasteland. You ask whether I have learned anything true from them. Sure. I've learned a lot about human gullibility, the retreat into delusion in order not to feel small, and the Dunning Kruger effect. Regrettably I have not learned a lot about the phenomena they usually want to talk to me about, be it vaccines or climate change or the hollow Earth theory or whatever. I note that you didn't answer my moon landing question.
View on Reddit #56974004

Fullofpizzaapie@reddit

Conspiring theory is a derogatory term, it's just a theory, same way asking a question is just a question. It makes people feel superior and an easy out when having to discuss people by first putting them down. Same goes for a hypothesis it's just a hypothesis. Questioning things aren't wrong or right, unless you go against the cultural narrative. You do realize most of our greatest minds at some point or another were ridiculed for their ideas, some even persecuted, then after enough time passes proven right. Time after time this happens, some people are way ahead of the rest and we don't celebrate that do we, we ridicule and destroy them. Non scientists also get this happen time after time, the legacy institutions trying to prevent change. Most of greatest contributors were at one point or another considered 'conspiracy' theorists even when their experiments checked out, alot of thinking went into it , alot of proof of their hypothesis. Sorry must have missed that one about the moon, honestly I'm not 100% sure about that anymore, there are a lot of weird things about if you look with an open critical mind. Like how come we never went back, how come we apparently don't have the technology to go back, obvious video feeds of physics in a non gravity environment not acting correctly like water staying in a cup, videos that have bubbles in space, flimsy doors flopping around, videos of people clearly using some kind of suspension rig to show they are floating, videos of one object dropping to the floor while the other floats. Ever wonder how come we never see stars on these video feeds up past our atmosphere? Have you seen the picture of the first people on everst vs the . Moon, you think they'd be happy? Over the moon? But they look depressed alot of weird things, in this day and age shouldn't we have a live feed from there by now or clear crisp video from the moon? Should be simple to prove, send someone up there, and we can all watch with our high powered telescopes. I asked did you ever learn about a conspiracy theory actually being true? If not says alot right because there are alot of examples unless you choose not to look. The example of overpopulation is a clear one, but you want to focus on human gullibility? It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled, that I would say is the majority of people.
View on Reddit #56976857

jtr99@reddit

Dude... everyone loves an underdog story. I get it. Scientific understanding often moves slowly. Painfully slowly, sometimes. But for every Ignaz Semmelweis or Alfred Wegener there are 10,000 people who really are just lone kooks. Statistically, if you think you have seen through the veil that obscures reality and have access to some new and glorious knowledge... you haven't. The example of overpopulation is not as clear as you seem to think it is. It's not very mysterious, really. Lots of people used to worry about overpopulation because the human population curve looked pretty damn exponential at the time. Now that it increasingly becomes clear that it's probably a sigmoid curve, and the population will level off and even fall sometime soon, people have different concerns. That doesn't suggest any sort of conspiracy to me. Both seem fairly rational responses to the situation as it was understood at the time. If you genuinely think that, on the balance of evidence, there's any serious doubt that Armstong and Aldrin landed on the moon in '69 then I don't know what to say to you except that your bullshit detector needs calibrating. >It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled On that we agree.
View on Reddit #56978295

Fullofpizzaapie@reddit

My point about overpopulation is to highlight you would have been considered a conspiracy theorist as most are labeled who go against the grain, even as an academic. Again i don't have to call you names like me being a narcissist. Same for scientists going against the grain, people can call you names but truth is more important. I find It very strange you haven't learned a conspiracy theory that was true, says alot about you. Don't seem open minded to not look even, not one... It's very Interesting. There are alot of examples, but all you focus on human gullibility. Maybe it's a mirror reflecting on you? As I said about the moon, the amount of weird things about it, I'd rather focus on alot of these anomalies that go against the narrative. I'm not 100% convinced, the same way when someone says a vax is 100% effective and safe without the rigor of testing I know or a fact that is bullshit. Low and behind it was.

Exactly, but the conspiracy theorists have turned it into “you can’t leave your 15 minute city, you can’t own a car, there will be fences around each 15 minute city, it’s government controlling the people” They’ve turned something really positive into a dystopian nightmare! The irony is for most people growing up in the 60s,70s, 80s, they already lived in what would be considered a 15 minute city, but because “government” put a name on it, it is now considered the enemy! I grew up in towns where everything was within a short walk, it was wonderful!

I lived somewhere rural and have moved into a city centre. It is a really quiet spot, between a victorian graveyard and the cathedral. My car only moves 3 days a week, tops. I am fitter, because I walk everywhere. I am shopping in local shops and saving a fortune, for example my kid wants a clip on fan, on Amazon it is 12.99 in the local hardware store it is 9.99 and that money goes directly into the local economy. The 15 minute city concept is such a positive thing.

Conspiracy crackpots believe that the purpose of a '15 minute city' is to keep everyone locked down to essentially no further than 1 mile from your home, as in you won't be able to travel further than 15 minutes walk from your home. Read 'Bad Pharma' by Ben Goldacre if you want a good summary of some of the problems with the system. One of the obvious issues is that drug companies do a lot of trials, then often only publish the successful ones. Most drugs are made available on the basis of a 95% confidence interval, which means that 19 times out of 20 they're showing a real effect, against a 1 in 20 chance that the results are by chance. But if you do 5 trials, 4 fail and 1 succeeds, the positive result is much less meaningful, there's a much greater probability that the effect seen in the study is from chance. There's also quite a lot of fraud, although I think that's more in earlier stage, academic research than in the clinical stage research which shows whether a drug actually works. The academic system for handling fraud is extremely bad.
View on Reddit #56889132

Reetpetit@reddit

I worked with a senior psychiatrist who was part of a team that uncovered the fact that large drug companies were not publishing adverse trials demonstrating adolescents committing suicide at alarming rates on their antidepressants. Which subsequently led to improved regulations. We should absolutely be mindful of the potential abuse of the system including outright misinformation and corruption by large pharmaceutical companies.
View on Reddit #56890451

Yeah, it's a shame that most of the public debate about this is misinformed, because there are changes which really should be made. Another point would be around marketing, some of the claims that were being made about Oxycontin being less addictive for example. Or the replication crisis in a lot of psychology and other social science. There are some fairly huge scandals there. I did read that the rules had changed around negative trials, did they fix the issue do you know? Or is it a partial fix?

It doesn't matter how much you point out how absurd this is, where even nations whose media is openly hostile to the side the WEF is protecting are still not covering these stories, they will insist it's you that has been brainwashed for daring to believe that internet nutjobs are not the font of all knowledge. Similarly, you get the ones who believe all scientists are part of it too, which means they can reject any scientific proof. Ultimately, "knowing the truth" from their conspiracy of choice is what they think proves they are smarter than 'the sheeple', and admitting that in reality they are pretty dumb and gullible is hard for them to do.

Moon landings are the classic one for this, no serious person has ever come forward to support the idea they were faked, none of the hundreds of thousands involved in both the effort itself as well as those spying on it. The USSR confirmed it, China confirmed it so did many independent science bodies and astronomers all around the world and political spectrum. Yet they still insist the government is powerful enough to not only control all those people but also prevent their cold war foes saying a thing.

Well, of course they did have to get a moon programme running, because for maximum verisimilitude the film set on which the fake was made was located on the moon. It's obvious!
View on Reddit #56897505

Wise-Application-144@reddit

Yeah I mean the launch was open to the public and witnessed by thousands, it was tracked on radar by the hostile USSR that were competing in the space race, it was visible on military and civilian radar and telecoms trackers, and there's a special laser reflector at the landing site that you can test yourself with basic equipment, and probes from India, China and Russia have photographed the landing site. At that point, a conspiracy would need the involvement of hundreds of thousands of people across various hostile nations and civilian and military organisations.
View on Reddit #56877659

sygrider@reddit

So does that mean this theory extends to the Cold War being fake?
View on Reddit #56878962

Wise-Application-144@reddit

I guess so? That's kinda the problem, there are so many witnesses that you need the invovement of them, their heirarchies, their governments etc. NASA had tracking stations across the globe, and AFAIK military and civilian radars could easily track the spacecraft out to a certain point. And anyone could point an aerial at the spacecraft and hear the comms. And presumably Russia would have been closely tracking it with similar capabilities to NASA. Plus thousands of people saw the fucking thing blast off into the sky. So I think NASA would have needed to fly an empty Apollo spacecraft to the moon and back because even the general public could test whether there was a spacecraft really out there. At some point, even if you wanted to fake the moon landing, it would become much easier just to do it for real.

The beauty of conspiracies is that they don't need to be consistent. They can be completely elastic and ephemeral, what they claim this week can be completely different to what they claimed last week. They don't even have to come to any logical conclusions. As long as they 'question the official narrative' and make people think that the actual experts may be wrong, that all that's required of them.

Ex colleague, an engineer who I really looked up to went all out and blamed all of COVID on 5G. It was so crazy because she'd do a lot of research and for things like mask effectiveness against blocking out viruses etc. she would have proper scientific sources, yet other things seemed to come from 20 minute YT videos which spoke about 25 different things and made no sense. You'd ask her, so I don't get this video what's it about to try to get her to dissect it and she'd just avoid answering by saying 'look for yourself' and 'the answer is in front of your eyes'. Said it's a crime against humanity to force vaccines on people. She deleted all her socials as she was getting backlash on there and for her, everyone not buying into conspiracies was crazy. I do wonder where she is now and where her mind is at. I don't think I'd be able to have a conversation with her though, as much as I wanted to.

Keep in mind that when talking about covid, a conspiracy theory is just a fact that hasn't become verified yet. When there were rumours of heart complications due to some vaccines, it was blamed on "preexisting health conditions" (god I never heard that phrase so much in my life as during covid) and anyone who blamed it on the vaccines was just a crazy quack conspiracy theorist antivaxxer. Then, lo and behold; turns out they were completely vindicated when some vaccines did in fact, cause heart complications. Now, I was not one of those conspiracy theorists. I simply believed that there hadn't been enough time between the outbreak to the rollout of vaccines for the medication to be completely 100% tested, naturally because time was of the essence. I was also too young to be eligible for the vaccine that was being rolled out to the elderly and sick first (I also saw a lot of theories that it was being tested on weak subjects first to see if there were any major complications in a short period of time. The disabled and elderly were guinea pigs). So I couldn't get the vaccine. In the meantime, I had covid once; the delta variant. This was between lockdowns and It was at my partner's brother's (already reduced to 60 people) wedding reception. Normally I'm a reserved and introverted person so weddings are so rare I can say I've only been to that one as an adult and teenager and I'm 26 now, so catching It was just unlucky. I wasn't going out partying and spreading germs like the media made It seem. It was just a worse cold but I've also had much worse colds on top of that. My partner at the time had severe laryngitis, and I actually said to them "I'd rather have covid that what you have" because they were genuinely crippled by it. They had the vaccine to please their grandma (at the time suffering from Parkinson's) and my partner's mum made her take it "just to make grandma happy" because she bought into all the news stuff and was constantly glued to her phone every single day, reading and fretting over things that often weren't true or highly exaggerated for dramatic effect. Meanwhile, I was hiking up hills when my "isolation" ended and I could manage that just fine. No shortness of breath or this mysterious "long-covid". Then I just decided that if I can survive it, what's the point in a vaccine? It seemed unnecessary after that. Also, important to mention that the vaccine does and did NOT stop people from carrying and spreading it; contrary to popular belief that people not taking the vaccine were just selfish and putting other people in danger. They weren't. I had covid a second time, this time from work from one of the residents because I work in a care home. Hot bed for contagious diseases. This was Omicron, and was so tame I barely even noticed it until I did a test and it was positive. This was waaaay after the second lockdown so this was when covid was already starting to fade from memory and be forgotten about. A big reason I also didn't want the vaccine was because of the media manipulation and peer pressure that was feeding into it that also wasn't compatible with my previously stated opinion that there wasn't enough time to test it properly. So not only did I have the choice of putting it in my body or not, but I was also made to feel ashamed and harassed for not doing so. This made me dig my heels in even more because fundamentally you should not need to feel bullied to take any kind of substance, especially one that has a spotty record. This was mostly from the elderly in their classic attempt at ageism, blaming young people for spreading it because the news was fear mongering and constantly showing graphs of affected age groups... But also failing to mention that young people were the "key workers" expected to go to work during a global pandemic. So for a few years, I was constantly subjected to ageism from my dad and my partner's family including her grandparents and mother. One thing covid taught me is how the elderly treat the news and media as gospel, as if they could never do any wrong at all. Just gobble gobble gobble, gobble up all of that tasty propaganda, fear, and prejudices that old people just love so much. It got to the point where I was no word of a lie starting to hear them parrot back exactly what someone said on the news like it was verbatim word for word; that's when I knew the propaganda had very deep roots. Old people are sometimes ageist but the pandemic was the worst of it, because they genuinely saw every young person as if they were a walking sack of disease or something. Every old person would avoid me, cover their faces, not even talk to me. This one time, there was a very narrow pedestrian trail with three old people talking either side of the path. I had no choice but to walk between them to which the old man commented sarcastically "six foot seven inches, that's two metres". I literally had no choice, what do you want me to tell you to move and have your conversation somewhere else? I even saw this lady walk halfway up someone's driveway covering her face like dracula just to avoid walking past me, and this was long enough after covid for it to seem like an exaggeration and overreaction. This was when I became cynical of the whole thing and everyone who took it seriously. Don't get me wrong, I took it seriously enough but it just made me realise a lot about people. In normal life before the pandemic and even today, people don't mind stepping on your toes, rubbing shoulders, and spitting in your face day to day. But when their own health is at risk, all of a sudden those same people are concerned about social distance and pretending to protect other people? I realised that people were only protecting themselves and highlighted the extremely selfish behaviour inside most people; not the unity and community that they would have you believe. They like to draw comparisons between the pandemic and the blitz during WW2 and that classic British behaviour of British people "coming together", but it wasn't like that at all. It was less community and calm rationing of resources and more like panic buying and treating everyone; even your own family like a leper. The dark side of everyone really shone, but it was thinly veiled as some noble sense of sacrifice for the greater good of all. What a joke it was. And on top of all of this, I wasn't a conspiracy theorist. I just had far too many negative interactions during the pandemic that I became cynical and jaded with the whole ordeal. It was the best time of my life because everywhere was empty which suited an introvert like my just fine on the rare occasion I actually did leave the house, but my mum however, was very much the conspirator. She genuinely believed there was some kind of social control going on, or that the vaccine (not yet proven) caused health complications. Every conspiracy out there, she was part of it. Now with us both not having the vaccine, she thought I was still on her side and she would constantly rant to me about all these posts or theories she found on Facebook, to which I would just nod and falsely agree to keep her happy. Even I have to admit some of her theories were definitely very far out, but imagine my surprise (and her ecstatic vindication) when some of those theories turned out to be fact.

I have a friend who was a nurse during Covid, she kept putting up posts calling people sheeple and telling us all to 'do our own research', but the best one was when she said she didn't see the point in washing your hands because you couldn't wash your hands in water that was hot enough to kill the virus... The WHO and other medical bodies did actually say that masks wouldn't make much difference, or could be harmful because of poor hygiene when taking it on and off, earlier on in the pandemic. There is actually a kind of opposite conspiracy, they downplayed the effectiveness of masks, because they didn't want to create a rush which would make it more difficult for healthcare workers to get access. I actually think people have said afterwards that was at least partially true. There was also a strong push for a long time to make out that transmission was through touch, which actually turned out to be nearly nonexistent, and then only through droplets in breath, rather than aerosol. The droplet concept was also as I understand a settled dogma about transmission of these kinds of viruses which needed to be overturned. If the droplet concept was true, then people did not need to wear masks as long as they socially distanced from one another. In the touch transmission route was true, masks could do more harm than good because people would touch their masks, then touch other things and transmit the disease. In that context it's not unreasonable to medical professionals to transmit what was supposedly settled before the pandemic, and which we were told repeatedly early on.

He was really good at the start of the pandemic and then either he got sucked into the rabbit hole from spending too long online or he decided to keep making money from his YouTube channel as the pandemic wound down he’d have to start catering to the anti vax crowd. The truth is he was not a researcher and he didn’t know how to interpret research properly as he would cherry pick certain studies or interpret them in the wrong way. I am a researcher and stopped watching him when I noticed him doing this. Billions of doses of the covid vaccines have been administered worldwide, there is an enormous amount of safety data on them and they are safe as much as any med (all will have a tiny proportion of people who get side effects). Masks weren’t 100% effective at preventing COVID transmission no but they reduced risk especially if everyone was wearing one. It seems like scientific illiteracy was really highlighted by the pandemic and people seemed to think if something wasn’t 100% effective it wasn’t worth doing and there was some big conspiracy about it or that because the NHS didn’t collapse after all that meant we shouldn’t have implemented any mitigation measures etc.

Really well said. I gave him a chance initially but he blatantly misinterprets data, whether it's intentional or not it's extremely uncool. People get sucked in by hearing the word 'nurse' associated with him and his harmless-bumbling-old-man charm, comfortingly circling things in pen. The mask thing is really frustrating isn't it, especially as they're not new, it was just new for everyone to be wearing one. The oxygen depletion myth is particularly annoying. I was in hospital for 30 hours at one point during the height of the pandemic (spine problem). Having obs taken every two hours, fully masked the whole time. My oxygen sats went UP while I was there, from 94% to 96%.

The problem with masks was that although they do work, they only work if used properly and in the right context. Everyone was walking round with pretty handmade cloth masks over their mouths. Or keeping one surgical mask for 2 months. I knew people who were washing them and re-wearing. Also they would have been most useful at home where people were living in close quarters. Not in a supermarket 2 metres apart all going down one way aisles.

'Trust the Science' often meant listen to the journalists and MPs who heard it from someone paid to tell us something and was often said by people with no qualification in the subject area. Someone says to their English teacher that a biology teacher told them not to take the Covid vaccine and the English teacher replies with 'Yeah, don't listen to your biology teacher, what does she know about science?' She started off very frightened of COVID, much more so than my family (still cautious due to various health issues). She then found out that the death rate was "only 0.5%" (she had thought it was much much higher) and that there weren't special bins for face masks. She thought this was proof that none of it was real. I said well 0.5% is still a lot of people, and that people don't take any things out of bins to rub them in their eyes. She ended up blocking me on everything because I wouldn't take heed, but didn't block my mum. Within months she had gone from "COVID is fake" to being very very afraid that "the UN army" made up of Muslim immigrants was going to kick down her door and forcibly vaccinate her. She cashed in her pension, she sold her car and bought a van so she can escape with her animals if necessary. She is frightened of "chemtrails". She thinks this is all part of the signs of Armageddon. She even thinks the moon landings were a hoax. This woman was NORMAL in 2019. Second post I've seen on this thread which mentions a UN army. Why am I only hearing about this now? I feel so out of the loop. I mean, how do people think this army (how big is it?) was recruited and trained? And why bother with a UN army made up of Muslim immigrants, when we have our own army made up of perfectly competent squaddies who'd shoot their own family if a Rupert with pips on his shoulder ordered them to?

I said why wouldn't our army do it and she said it's because the UN army will defeat "our boys and girls" or the government will betray us. Then the UN will take over the world as the government: with no individual countries and no religion allowed (including no Islam). She believes the point of the vaccine is to depopulate the world down to a few million for easy control, so I said well why would the UN vaccinate you rather than just shoot you? She thinks men arriving in small boats without documents are the UN army gradually being brought in and being posted around the country - I said why wouldn't the UN just send them in in far greater numbers on planes mixed in with ordinary passengers? None of it even makes sense on its own terms.

I don’t know how you can take them seriously though. Back at the start of the pandemic they were saying it was 5G mobile masts causing covid, then they were saying covid didn’t even exist, then they were saying the vaccines had microchips in them, then telling us we’d all be dead within two years of taking the vaccine, then saying whenever someone died from covid it was actually the vaccine that killed them. Are you saying most of what I just wrote turned out to be true? How come I’m not dead or vaccine injured?

The person I know who got super into 5G/antivaxx conspiracies during covid has very much kept up that lifestyle. Tbf she had a really successful independent gym before lockdown and she went out of business due to the restrictions. She went straight into the arms of the anti lockdown crew. And then she ended up starting a small food truck, travelling around festivals. Once she was surrounded by the hippie festival crew every single weekend of each summer it wasn’t too long before she ended up full crazy conspiracist. So I do have sympathy for how she ended up there. But I think she could have carried on having a lot of personal training clients still, even without a gym of her own anymore, if people weren’t distancing themselves from her and her views.

No, because there’s no distinction. The same science behind the other vaccines was behind the Covid one. The same testing applied. The same level of acceptable risk applied. If you believe otherwise, you’ve fallen for a conspiracy.

If you really think everyone’s reason for not injecting was because they believed it was a conspiracy then you’re refusing to see the bigger picture and aren’t worth interacting with. I firmly believe the intentions of those behind the vaccine were good and there was no ‘world order microchip intentional future complications’ malice behind it. Have I fallen for a conspiracy or am I just a person with their own thoughts and concerns based on the information given to me by the relevant authorities/government? I’m sorry but if you still have this view in 2025 you’re simply thick.

It was to be ‘hard’ exclusively. Give-over do-gooder.

Had you recently contracted and recovered from hepatitis when this happened? Was the hepatitis vaccine rushed out in response to a virus with a <1% mortality rate and a far smaller rate when talking about young and healthy individuals? Did the hepatitis vaccine fail to prevent future infection and transmission? Did over 90% of the people who received the hepatitis vaccine report at least one side effect, whether mild or severe after their dose? Did you require a booster every 6 months in order to keep up with the ever changing problem? What an absolutely moronic comparison, however I can’t say I’m surprised considering the kind of people I’m dealing with here.

I know quite a few who went down the ’scandemic’ rabbit hole and now have just pivoted to chemtrails, great reset etc. But I think many people don’t realise that there was another kind of conspiracy theory during covid that’s still going now. It’s that covid is actually so bad that if you get it even once it will give you brain damage, and if you get it multiple times it will basically fuck you up. There are people who believe it to be an ‘extinction event’ or a ‘mass disabling event’ (depending on who you ask) and in ten to fifteen years all the people who aren’t still wearing FFP3 respirator masks indoors at all times (or even full-on gas mask kind of things) will either be dead or have so much brain damage they will be unable to function. Scientists are either complicit, or they have been brainwashed by ‘covidiots’ to ignore all the evidence. You won’t see these people as they pretty much hide away in their homes and only come out if they’re wearing an absolutely solid mask (with the seal around it checked by a DIY method that’s shared on various websites). Most of them work from home and don't have kids so it's pretty easy for them to live this lifestyle (although must be playing havoc with their mental health to be so isolated). They are very, very angry that not *everyone* is doing this. Their rhetoric about the ‘unmasked’ sounds eerily similar to the rhetoric the ‘scandemic’ people trotted out about people who *did* wear masks (‘sheeple’ and so on). They also believe they've been lied to about the vaccine but in a different way to the other lot; they are angry that they were told the vaccine would stop you getting covid, and it doesn't. They think we should be putting all our efforts into a vaccine that completely stops covid and are very angry that scientists seem to have 'given up'. They read all the studies that come out about covid. Anything that says covid is worse than we think they absolutely believe even if it's a pre-print, or a tiny sample size, or a study on rats or whatever. Anything to the contrary? They condemn it, usually by saying it's a pre-print, or a tiny sample size, or a study on rats etc. I know about this because initially, before the vaccine came along, I was very covid cautious myself, so I got to know some of this group of people online. And watched as they never moved on. In fact other people getting back to normal just made them double down even more. And anyone who does move on is condemned. Reminds me of a religious cult where people are 'shunned'. I don't think it's nearly as well-known as the other side of the covid stuff.

My dad wasn't a super conspiracy theorist at the time but he's since gone off the deep end with them. Honestly, I was a denier at first ... I will openly admit I was wrong. I did get 2 vaccines - covid still took my health from me. The virus almost killed me, destroyed my lungs, caused brain and endothelial damage. I've had Long Covid going on 3 years, no treatments no cures. 80 symptoms at one point I was bedbound unable to speak breath or see, before the pandemic I was climbing mountains. Then I was unable to walk 5 feet. 3 years later I'm down to 4 symptoms but life is still difficult having CFS/ME .. MCAS and autoimmune problems. **Don't be stupid, get your vaccines, eat healthy, stay active and enjoy life ... it can be taken from you in the blink of an eye**

View on Reddit #56924064

I think it was a case of lots of people sitting around at home bored, unable to do their normal routines. Of course people where looking up stuff about Covid online, because it was the big overwhelming event in everyone's lives lots of grifters took the opportunity to grab a new captive audience, and the social media algorithms just took it from there. I was a little bit 'sceptic' myself, not that though it was all made up or a Chinese bio-weapon, nor did I go down the anti-vax route, but I was very sceptical about the effectiveness of mass lockdowns and thought they where a sledgehammer to crack a nut. The algorithm did try to drag me down the full on conspiracy route but thankfully I resisted. Pert of me wonders if perhaps much of the toxicity in modern online discourse got massively accelerated by covid. I do feel sorry for lots of kids who effectively had to live a 2-3 of their most important formative years 'online' and I suspect much of the online radicalisation of young men started to occur then.

The thing about it being a Chinese bio-weapon was always my favourite response to these people. ‘Covid is a scam it doesn’t exist it isn’t killing people’ ‘It’s been invented by the Chinese as a bio-weapon’ …which one is it? And the usual "plandemic/scamdelic" it's all just a plot by "Big Zoom" to make us all do video calls for hours a day and that will kill all the dolphins or some bollocks. When I knew her she was quite metal/punk so I wonder if the accompanying anti-establishment tendency from that was the root cause. Also at my last job we hired someone who was an anti-vaxxer and thought Covid was all a big con. This was a job that involved him transporting elderly and vulnerable people about. All the other transport crews had been fully vaxxed from the get-go, as we counted as NHS staff. He also thought Neuro-linguistic Programming was a legitimate thing.

I worked with a bloke who had fallen so far into a climate change rabbit hole that he had landed back on the side of the scientific consensus that climate change both existed, and was man-made. However, he believed it was because Elon Musk was controlling global weather using starlink satellites in order to sell more Teslas, and that the ultra rich could pay Musk to ensure the weather was desirable for certain events. I found alm this out when he very confidently declared that the weather would be good for the Jubilee, because the Queen had paid Musk off using tax money.

We only found out about his death because he never bothered to update his emergency contacts to reflect that his family wouldn't actually consider his death an emergency for any reason other than he left a house full of unsecured firearms. He at least did us the favor of going quickly. His poker/ drinking buddies held a memorial for my father at a bar. I did not attend. If I lived in the same country, or even in the same state, I still would not have attended. It's been a lot quieter online recently. Luckily I only really had one person in my life that went down that route. According to her, lockdown was permanent until the jabs could depopulate the planet within 2 years. She's moved onto more fringe stuff now that thankfully doesn't come up in day-to-day conversation as long as you don't mention things like brushing your teeth. At one lunch, we'd managed to avoid any madness until near the end when I asked how someone's kids were doing and she leaned across the table and whispered "do you know they're normalising pedophilia in schools now?". SO CLOSE to getting out unscathed but no, I fell at the last hurdle on what I thought was a safe bet question. She believed schools were softening up kids for the global satanic death cult and the evidence was a book about a kid and his uncle having sex. I googled a few key words when I got home and found an old cartoon picture book from the 90's in America about a kid who's parents were in a toxic marriage and ignored him, his uncle slipped into his bed one night and molested him and he then turned out to be gay. The book ended with a psychologist helping him understand that he wasn't gay, he was just craving the love his father never gave him. It was some fringe, homophobic nonsense that was definitely not being read in UK schools. She's seen a screenshot on one of her "look what they're doing now" social media groups and took it as gospel with no context whatsoever. Things are much calmer now. Thank fuck. That lunch was wild.

Oof. This sounds exhausting. I think that all this conspiracy nonsense isn't a new phenomenon, it just has a new platform. I'm absolutely certain that people like your acquaintance - paranoid, very vulnerable to suggestion, and yet shockingly stubborn about their established beliefs and decisions - have always been out there. But they used to be isolated. Poor old Beryl down the road would go off about how the squirrels spy on her when she's in the bath and her family would nod and smile and make sure that she had enough bread and firewood for the week. Everyone in the pub would give a little groan when someone set Steve off again with his ranting about how the elves are getting into his pantry at night and spoiling his milk. Communities absorbed and coped with these people (or shunned and exiled them, sadly) but - and this is the important bit - they were few and far between _so they very rarely had the opportunity to meet and share their delusions with each other_. But now all the Beryls and Steves can meet on the internet, and they see other people who think _just like them_ and it makes them feel validated and confident. Like they're onto something. Like all their feelings of paranoia and suspicion were correct all along! And they're so certain, and so ready to devote their time and energies to their projects that they're dragging other susceptible people onto the bandwagon.
View on Reddit #56866282

SatinwithLatin@reddit

Plus, once their group grows to a certain size they catch the gaze of professional grifters and/or wealthy dipshits who are also highly suggestible. And suddenly their views are featured on fucking mainstream and *further still* they get themselves a political representative willing to tolerate *and act upon* their delusions.
View on Reddit #56868100

goldenthoughtsteal@reddit

I think this is a key point, vulnerable people were hard to target, because they were isolated, hopefully with some community support to shoo away the grifting scumbags. But now , with Social media they can be gathered and harvested by the Russell Brands of the world, with their delusions being reinforced by online echo chambers. It's going to take humans a bit of time to adjust to Social media, I'm sure the same problems happened with the advent of the printing press, but change is quicker now, maybe we can't adjust fast enough.

We didn't see the ones fountaining nonsense all over the internet because there just wasn't a platform for them to be spreading it around. I reckon there were plenty of people out there with this mindset but they didn't get any encouragement from the people they were in contact with so it largely stayed under control. This doesn't surprise me. Perhaps it's another conspiracy theory and I'm just as bad, but I've read a few times that far right groups were floating a lot of the conspiracy theories in order to identify suitably malleable people for the radicalisation pipeline...

You're absolutely right about the covid conspiracy -> far-right radicalization pipeline. But few people realize just how well-organized it was. Remember those 'White Rose' stickers everywhere? No that’s not a theory. That’s basically what the whole Cambridge Analytica scandal was about. They developed the tech to psychologically profile people using social media data then target them with content specifically designed to appeal to that kind of personality to radicalise them or get them to vote for something completely against their own interests. The UK government classified it as weapons grade technology yet that didn’t stop them allowing it to be deployed against us!

The real conspiracy (not really a conspiracy as it’s not hidden though) is how social media is being deliberately used to basically radicalise people into supporting fascism. It’s scary how well it works.

I don't think it's been hushed up, it's just that people don't care. If you're savvy enough to understand how it worked then you now know and you don't give your information so freely to social media companies. The rest either don't understand or don't care.
View on Reddit #56874880

Decent investigative journalism would present it in a way that the less savvy understands how it impacts them. Using post office horizon as an example, many more informed people knew something was wrong for years, but action to resolve it only commenced after the story was dumbed down into an ITV drama.

A big driver of conspiracy thinking is trying to create a reality where you know what's happening, and that it's happening for a reason (no matter how nefarious). Much better to think you're the only one who knows what's going on rather than accepting you have no control
View on Reddit #56881264

MesoamericanMorrigan@reddit

Actually I’d much rather that not be the case. I base the plausibility of conspiracy theories on the evidence available and the likelihood of such a thing truly occurring. And once you know the shit that HAS been proven to occur in the past, you begin to realise how much more never comes to light officially, and little the powers that be actually give a shit about us. This knowledge does not make me feel empowered. I’d MUCH rather just believe bad things simply happen because dumb people in power make dumb mistakes. Which also happens of course.

A teacher, his wife and their two young children were neighbours of my relative. 0ne of the children had a severe liver issue (my family member described him as looking like a member of The Simpsons) so they were delighted when he eventually had a successful transplant. When lockdown happened the teacher did lock down properly to protect his immuno suppressed son. Then the vaccines came along. He went full on tin foil hat conspiracy level. Abjectly refused to allow the kids to get vaccinated. Despite all medical advice including the transplant team. Despite medical advances being the sole reason his son was still alive. Despite his wife pleading with him. In the end she managed to get the kids vaccinated, but asked a relative to be there when she told him because she was so scared of how they would react. He flipped out. They are now divorced. He lives in a bedsit near the kids. Still insists vaccines are sent from the devil and that big pharma are slowly killing us all. There is definitely corruption and even conspiracies at all levels of society - always have been and always will be. The problem comes when people start trying to formulate connections and intent to bring order to it and then it ends up fucking useless because you can't hone in on the valid points amongst the madness.

They transitioned to being vegan and joined the Hillsong church. Some people just need a black and white view of the world to feel okay. COVID conspiracies were just what veganism and god is for them now: a way to cope. Holding nuance in your brain as constant of reality is incredibly taxing and mind boggling. The idea that governments lied AND the creation of the vaccine was not all bad is hard to hold onto for many. Easier to paint everything with the same brush: government = bad, vegan = good, god = good.

Some people just don't seem to have the ability to accept that there are no grown-ups and almost everything is chaos. There has to be someone in charge, either good or evil. There seems to be a lot of overlap with conspiracy nuts and the religious and far-right. Everything is good or bad, no nuance. Not having a daddy running the show makes their brains short circuit.

My dad is still living a fairly normal life (has the same job, still goes to the pub) but it has soured most of his inter-personal relationships, including ours. It’s hard to stomach anything but a completely surface level conversation with him now. I tried so many times but it’s become more and more deluded and hateful that I just don’t have it in me anymore. It’s sad, he’s only in his 50s but I don’t think he’s the same person he was before.

Yes I do. She's getting divorced now. They actaully fell down multiple conspiracy rabbit holes. Antivax, obviously. But also "radiation" and "alternative medicine/big pharma" big time. She got divorced last year and I don't blame her soon-to-be ex husband much. It became an ***absolute ballache*** to spend any time with her. It was an obsession. You couldn't use your phone near her. She doesn't have WiFi in her apartment. Whatever you were eating, they'd tell you why it was poison and XYZ options were "healthier". Any ailment, any medication you were taking was also poison from "big pharma", and there was some magic "alternative" oil/root/herb for it. And this is how bad she was with me, a friend. She must have been twice as bad behind closed doors with her husband.

I know someone who was a default contrarian before the pandemic started, and when it did, I knew she'd be caught up in all the anti-vax and anti-mask stuff. The kicker for me, however, was the fact her mother, with whom she was living, was being treated for cancer at the time of the pandemic, and was highly immunocompromised due to chemotherapy. Her idiot daughter still refused to wear a mask or get vaccinated. I already knew she was a selfish twat, but in that moment it was absolutely beyond doubt. Her mother was dead before the second lockdown.

It depends how you look at it tbf, I think halfway through lockdown with the rules changing back and forth, a lot of people realised that the government had no idea what they were doing but there were still some people who blindly lapped up everything they heard on the news, only for the party gate scandal to happen. Like I don’t think vaccinations are inherently bad but I didn’t get a covid vaccination, simply cos I didn’t trust it, it was developed very quickly- I’ve had a few friends around my age (26) develop mysterious autoimmune issues in the past few years (they’ve been vaccinated), that being said that isn’t enough to conclude that there’s an issue with the jabs (correlation doesn’t always equal causation) I think it’s healthy to question things to some extent but it’s important to recognise when people are taking things too far.

These are people who don't have many friends or hobbies by choice, or because they're just unpleasant to be around. I thought he would have let up since the covid debacle quieted down but he's been manipulated and sucked down into these conspiracy theories further by people online. He believes almost any modern conspiracy theory now, fluoride is used to poison people, masks and some government thingy are mind control operations, there are pyramids on Mars, the medicines by big pharma are poisoning everyone to sell even more medicine, we are cross-bed with aliens, chem trails... He also manipulated my grandma into that stuff, she even joined a small party that consists of mostly antivaxers. They both stopped watching official news entirely and now only inform themselves through these conspiracy YouTube channels and similar. I also noticed they both had Telegram downloaded. It's all really sad. I know they aren't stupid, they've just been manipulated so much, I don't know what I could possibly do to help them out of it, and get them back. Yes that is certainly a debate to be had. The issue was when Covid hit we didnt know how deadly the virus would turn out to be for the average person, it was brand new and therefore nothing was known about it. So the decision was taken to protect everyone, not just the vulnerable. But there is a valid argument that the second lockdown could have been avoided or vastly reduced in terms of scale, given a lot more was known about the virus by then.

I developed an auto immune disease after taking the vaccines (not a single symptom prior to 2022 so different your sister’s situation). Now this could be purely coincidental but I can’t help but shake that nagging feeling in the back of my head that they may have contributed to me developing said auto immune disease. I’m not in one camp or the other definitively but it can’t be proven either way, so people who say that the vaccine may have caused their illness could be right.

Viruses triggering the onset of an autoimmune disease is the prevailing theory for the autoimmune I have, however, it’s still just that, a theory. I completely agree that more research needs to be done and I’ve been assured that it is. Nothing has been proven to be the cause. I’m not in anyway anti science or anti vax but I think some leeway can and should be given to those searching for reasons as to why they have now got a disease that they didn’t previously have. Lots of things that were said to be “good” for us back in the day have now been proven to be more harmful than they are good and that could be the case with the Covid vaccine. As I said previously, if it can be proven one way or the other then I’ll be fine with it but just shouting down people because the have a different point of view regarding the Covid vaccine doesn’t really help, it just creates more division. I’m sure people will read this and immediately make a judgement of “this person thinks they’ve been red pilled or whatever” but that isn’t the case. I have an open mind and as of yet, there is no irrefutable evidence one way or the other.

Oh yeah sorry I missed the word vaccination on first read 😅 it's not unheard of for vaccines (it's a risk with every type of vaccine apparently) to trigger or exacerbate autoimmune responses but extremely rare, people will hear "it's possible" and run with it.

I had a colleague at the time who was massively pro-Israel. I didn't have much knowledge about the country at the time, but he singlehandedly turned me against it with everything he told me, long before the current escalation. I have a friend and colleague who went right down the rabbit hole. I noticed it first when he left a letter his wife had written to their kids school on my desk in work. The letter demanded that her kids should not be made to wear face masks due to lung worms found in them. I asked him about it and I wish I hadn't. Lung worms, yellow cards, chemtrails, flat earth, 15minute cities the list was endless. It peaked when his wife accidentally poisoned the family with bleach. She'd seen something about storing water in a large container and adding chlorine to purify it before drinking rather than just drinking tap water (UK). She got the quantity of chlorine (bleach) wrong and over the space of a fortnight poisoned them all. Drs struggled to find why they were ill until she mentioned the bleach. All are well (physically) now and my friend is a little less obsessed but he has now become a devout Christian. I put it down to people just wanting answers to things and not worrying about whether they understand the answers.

I sort-of did, but the main fear - which I think is still valid - is that the technology is there for a technocracy. There are already IRL examples of this in different portions of the globe. Trust in government was/is so low, you sort of expect them to be capable of anything. It's a borderline hyperbolic example, but post-2024 America is a prime example of how quickly a Western society can go down the pan. Fortunately I snapped out of the COVID conspiracy stuff once I realised we still have *most* of our 'checks and balances' still intact. But you've still got to be vigilant.

Colleague who lives alone, I would argue did not survive the lockdowns, or at least his personality didn’t. He spent ridiculous amounts of time on fringe theories starting with anti-vax, specifically Covid, though the illness itself “wasn’t real” of course. He was the first person I knew who got Covid but it was very early on and pre-testing so this was never confirmed and he denies he ever had it. He obtained and took ivermectin and maintains that this kept him safe from COVID, which didn’t exist but we all know the conspiracies don’t have to be consistent. Since then, he’s been completely radicalised by Russian propaganda and by the ultra right. According to him, Russia is the best country in the world, the Donald is the only non-corrupt Western leader and some “rapture” type event is coming. Just last week he described migrants as “devils”. I think he forgot he was at work until he saw the look on my face before I verbally reprimanded him - we are peers, so I not much else I could do. He’d deny it if I went to HR. Honestly, most people still believe the theory that the pandemic is over. Like, dozens of people in the UK die each week of COVID still in 2025, and millions have been disabled with Long COVID, and we just all pretend it's "like a cold" despite the overwhelming medical and scientific evidence. It's not like we need to go back to lockdowns. A few simple measures that have been effective elsewhere in the world suffice - wear masks on public transport, make clubs pubs and restaurants ventilate 5 times an hour, and stick air filter boxes in classrooms. But there's no will to do that, and even suggesting it makes your average Redditor seethe.

He passed away just after Xmas after multiple strokes and organ failure. He left behind two teenage boys and a loving wife that has never recovered from her loss. He was 46, fit and healthy. Yes! The first family member: She was always low-level alt-med (she worked in a local heath food shop) and vaguely antivax, but now she spends 90% of her time online promoting "cranio-sacral therapies", which are like chiropractic if you removed any hint of research & qualifications and filled the gaps with feelgood memes. Apparently, China cured all their Covid cases overnight by just tugging and poking at people's skulls and spines. Also she's a doula now. And despite being previously apolitical she's now certain that Keir Starmer is Hitler. But she's generally nonconfrontational and her "cranio-sacral therapy" practice is pumping out lots of AI-generated pictures of smiling babies &c. The second: Aging hippy. Had also been long-term antivax, absolutely thrived on provocative campaigns during lockdown (including a massive group hug in the town centre which attracted about a dozen actual attendees, one of whom I know to be a freeman-on-the-land). He stormed out of a local green party group. Now he's much more confrontational. Tried to stand in a local election but he failed with the paperwork (imagine the Northern Independence Party but if they were into chia seeds and free love). Now he spends all his time campaigning against vaccines and wind turbines (and also bitter personal fights with other local Greens even though they too are fighting the wind turbines). I am 100% sure that he'll segue into a different fight next year, and the year after... he's just addicted to the buzz of telling everybody that they're deluded sheep. The third: Before covid she had occasionally dabbled in conspiracy theories but not drastically so. Always a heavy drinker at home, surprisingly got a lot more healthy during lockdown (I was the opposite). Then her Covid conspiracy theories veered into more political stuff, she bounced around a couple of different campaigns before finding a home in Reform. Now her worldview is about 50/50 split between political conspiracy theories (ie Rotherham rape gangs had government support) and conventional Reform stuff.

I know people who didn’t get the vaccine as it wasn’t “tried and tested” and they “didn’t know what was in it” - yet some of them happily hoover up a gram of coke every other weekend, or will get weight loss jabs without asking any questions! 😂 Tbf they are doing pretty well (other than the casual drug use!).

Yes my neighbour went full crazy, she was always a little bit crazy but she refused to get the vaccine during COVID as it would kill us all off within a year. She never got the vaccine and being in her late 60s she is still isolating now. She used to be quite outgoing but I've not seen her since pre the pandemic, and I would normally see her every few weeks. Now she only communicates via email.

Had to unfriend a few as while I don't mind their company in real life, the nonsense they posted on socials bought the devil out in me! At the time of the first lockdown my cousin, who has always been quite radical, began posting things on Facebook along the lines of it being a conspiracy, can't believe we are all falling for it, it is just the Government etc wanting to control us, it is all a lie etc. It was daily to the point I selected the option in Facebook to stop seeing her posts in my newsfeed. A couple of months later I thought, "Oh I'll just check in to see what she has been posting". I was confronted with images of her in hospital on oxygen. She had got COVID (she didn't have the jab), and had come very close to dying. She was in hospital for about three months, needed help breathing for a good couple of years, and still is very unwell as a result - she was back in hospital last month as a result of an infection she got.

At my work we deal with a lot of these types. Mostly people who were 13-18 when covid started so now are adults (18-24). With therapy to tackle their issues and be able to rejoin the world. The majority of those we see are in their words "black pilled" they hate society, government etc so have just become NEET's (Not in education employment or training) So numb themselves with drugs/porn/alcohol etc. Some have gone down the hating medicine and vaccines route which we can't do much for except therapy and talk out their issues. Usually some kind of medical malpractice has happened to them or in the family and it scares them from ever trusting the NHS again. The majority (When I say majority I mean a good 95%+) have mental health issues, have been victims of abuse etc. So it's easy to see how they've been taken advantage of and fallen down these rabbit holes. We do our best to help these people and for those we help it makes me so happy.

The deeper she fell, the more extreme her views became. It moved on to a new world order, transhumanism, lizard people etc. She began believing that transgender people are 'the mark of the beast' - myself, being trans, was a sign of the times and I was sent as an omen to warm her. She tried to convince me my mother was a pedophile for allowing me to begin HRT (at 19). I moved out. Haven't seen her for over a year as she genuinely made me spiral a bit. Yes, and they haven’t left it behind - the vax *is* killing us, but it wasn’t engineered properly so it’s slower than the governments wanted. Has now also moved onto chemtrails, in a big way, polluting the local FB groups by hijacking peoples’ innocent posts with this garbage. I spent a while carefully trying to explain how for every moment this has been supposedly going on, tens of thousands of people would need to be involved, worldwide, and some of those would be on low wages, and could make themselves immensely rich just by approaching any media outlet with the proof to expose it, as it would be the news story of the millennium. But they haven’t. For the fifty or so years it’s been a thing, no-one has, anywhere, Apparently, or so I was told, they wouldn’t do that as they would be implicated. Oh and I’ve to do some proper research (despite me actually BEING a researcher), and I’ve been sent quite the list of YT gems to help me do so. I think I’ll pass. I really mentally struggled during lockdown as I was entirely on my own, so spent a lot of time on social media (I know) and her Instagram stories about how everyone falling for it was a sheep were really triggering. Unfollowed her and got an Instagram message almost instantly saying ‘thank you for your support’ and she blocked me. Just looked at her Facebook and it seems she found God as well during this and his homeschooling her kids (about 3 and 6 I’d say) because she doesn’t want them to be infiltrated by the world. Not to be rude but she was never the cleverest girl and fell for a lot of MLM scams and the like, so feel sorry for the kids. I am not saying at all that all religious people are conspiracists but her page reads like something g straight out of Far Cry. I was called a conspiracy theorist for not taking the vaccine, not because I thought it was going to kill me, but because I had already caught Covid twice by the time they were rolling them out and thought there was no point since I was effectively fine the past 2 times. Made sense to me. I was essentially treat like a criminal and friends stopped talking to me. After everything settled, those same 'friends' tried talking to me, by which point I didn't want to associate with them. I'm doing great, and the friends that did get vaxxed are also doing fine I think. So no one died and people really needed to stop freaking out. Does that count?

I know an elderly bloke who I used to work with who was always inquisitive and funny. Now he's switched to crass jokes which reference conspiracy theories which skirt the line of inappropriate. Due to him being *very* good at his job fixing problems and him being old, he basically gets away with it. Can't imagine anyone at the start of their career getting far with what he can come out with.

Found religion, smokes a tonne of weed, now thinks demons are real and inhabit our bodies to carry out tasks for the Devil. Still bangs on about how Covid wasnt real, and how anti vaxxers were treated as badly as Jews during the Holocaust.

I know two. One was a mums group friend who started to believe some “Covid is fake, lockdowns and masking are part of a conspiracy to make it easier for a cabal of global elites to kidnap and traffic children to harvest adrenochrome” stuff he started reading about online. At the same time she was also very worried that she would catch Covid, die alone in her house without anyone realising leading to her toddler starving to death as well. It escalated to her becoming paranoid about gang stalking, people marking her house with symbols so her son was going to be kidnapped and such. I am very, very glad that she realised she was unwell and got psychological help, she’s now doing great. The other was my brother who I’ve talked about on Reddit a lot, mainly on the Q-Anon Casualties subreddit which really helped me process thing. At his worst he threatened to kidnap my children to prevent them from getting vaccinated. He’s now…. Ok I guess, still very alt-right but he’s functioning, owns a business, got married and had a baby girl. But the video of her first steps has Tucker Carlson interviewing Putin on in the background. We still don’t speak.

I thought i could kind of tread rhe middle ground but I think i have possibly lost my covid vax nutter friend now. She sent me a video of a doctor waffling on nonsense about spike proteins and she really was silly to send me that because I've got a degree in bloody pharmacology and this GP probably did one module of pharm in 1967 and never thought about it again so I sound like I'm a right know it all cow dismissing it out of hand. I understand that she doesn't understand that if the spike protein really was building up in your body and you couldn't excrete it on a cellular level you'd have much bigger problems than the vague long covid these people are claiming and taking a single dose of the quack med (not bioavaiable orally) that they claim fixed them overnight is an obvious case of the placebo effect working on a psychological sypmtom. But she sees a qualified medical doctor saying she took a chemical known to destroy the covid spike protein in vitro and her symptoms vanished overnight and it makes sense to her. That woman is a doctor and I'm not a doctor so why would she believe me? You cant win and shes not spoken to me since. Sigh.

I was one of the first people wearing a mask in public the moment I realised they couldn't contain the known cases in the UK. Some guy came up to me in B&Q telling me it was a load of rubbish and mocking me in front of others. It really annoyed me at the time but I'd love to know if he survived and if he did, what he thinks now.

Yes. My best man from my wedding. Covid came along at the same time as the breakdown of his long term relationship so he focused his anger on the world of covid. I haven't heard from him for a few years but a friend said that he still pops up on Facebook from time to time writing angry unhinged responses to things.

Yes, one. Covid conspiracies were a gateway drug for him to lots of other conspiracies. Lost a lot of friends and family over it and even the family that still speak to him find him exhausting and shut down the conversation any time he tries bringing it up. It's hard to work out whether conspiracy theories are his hobby or an addiction.

Judging from what I see on TikTok there's a whole load more flat earthers. Any time someone dies unexpectedly there'll always be someone saying "Vaccine!" even it turns out it was suicide. And of course any young person getting cancer must have caught it because of the vaccine.

I dealt with a customer just after lockdown who started by telling me about how he was into bitcoin early and was one of the first billionaires. I probably wouldn't have believed him, except all his address details checked out in a very expensive part of London. He then went off on one about how he'd been looking up all of burial and cremation records for all council regions in Kent and London, and that there had been no increase at all in deaths. Proper weirdo
