New intelligence suggests Israel is preparing possible strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, US officials say

Worth noting it's from multiple US officials, not just one.
Jazzlike_Ad7734@reddit
So the US is warning Iran?
improbablydrunknlw@reddit (OP)
If they go through with this, I can imagine multiple scenarios where this leads to massive and full scale war in the middle east.
Oolongteabagger2233@reddit
Glad I'm not male aged 18-25 in the US
ExRays@reddit
Man during wwii men from age 18-45 were drafted. The age ranges are re-evaluated for every sufficiently large enough conflict. We can't sleep on this
hobojoe5012@reddit
We aren't as fit as they were in the 40s. They'd have to lower their standards to draft a lot of us lol
Festering-Fecal@reddit
Military recruitment is actually up right now.
Vulcan_Jedi@reddit
Look up Macnamara’s 100,000 in Vietnam. When they need people they will scrape the bottom of the barrel until the bottoms gone.
Kindly-Guidance714@reddit
Uh they were giving convicts reduced prisons sentences for a few draft years in Vietnam when things get bad that bar reaches hell.
hobojoe5012@reddit
I guess that's what the Russians are doing. You'd think drafties and conscripted people would lower the moral of the volunteer forces. It's hard to rely on someone to save your life when they have little training and may not be qualified lol
Gendarmerie29@reddit
As a military-aged male living in the US, I am not fighting any war for America's (or Israel's) dumbass politicians. While I have not taken a poll, I'd bet my life that there would be draft riots if Captain STDs tried to drag America's youth into another foreign war. The US government can't really mobilize the kind of public backing needed to fight a full-scale war abroad at this point. That trust has been squandered.
ClintBarton616@reddit
As a great scholar once said: I'll serve crack before I serve this country
Mo_ovarida666@reddit
Lmao like you will have a choice. When the propaganda starts, you will be the first one in line. Same shit happened during Vietnam, Iraq n Afganistan.
Gendarmerie29@reddit
I'm sorry but the internet exists. While the internet existed during the War on Terror, things have changed significantly since then. Enough people have seen footage from the wars in Gaza and Ukraine to know what kind of awful shit happens in wars.
There won't be a repeat of the War on Terror in terms of recruitment. People have grown increasingly skeptical of the government since the 2000s and are generally more critical of their nation today. To top it off, Americans have also grown increasingly suspicious of each other. One has to look no further than this past election season when some people were casually talking about a second civil war.
If a draft happens, then riots and resistance should be expected. The US government has done a good job of squandering a lot of the trust that the public placed in it. The only way a large number of Americans will support the US getting directly involved in a war is if there is another attack on US soil. Until then, the government can't expect much support in that regard. I'm certainly not fighting in a war started for questionable reasons.
Fancy_Exchange_9821@reddit
Different day and age for those conflicts. Have you seen the average American teen? Brainrotted beyond repair. You think they’re gonna wanna fight a war across the world 🤣
ryleg@reddit
Not today they won't. But they probably didn't before WW2 or 911 either (clearly Gulf of Tonkin was a failure from this perspective).
WAisforhaters@reddit
I don't remember people being super gung ho to sign up for military service after 911 out of some patriotic fervour, it was just a way to pay for college if you were poor
Tha_Dude_Abidez@reddit
No that’s not true. It surged massively along with police and fire applications
dashingsauce@reddit
The expectation is already that there would be riots.
Why do you think locking down borders ahead of time is so prescient?
AntiBoATX@reddit
They won’t draft you if you’re fat and blind! Majority of reddit is safe
redrumraisin@reddit
Me I'm trans, I'm safe from the draft but not from the camps.
remembers-fanzines@reddit
I'd say drafted men would just need to show up in a dress and lisp a bit, but they might end up working in a labor camp for RFK instead. The Corporal Klinger route to draft exemption might not be the greatest idea right now.
Wish I could put a /s on that.
Dull-Hornet-2596@reddit
Maybe two of my sons are safe then? Not by any means fat, but both have very poor eyesight. Legally blind without their glasses.

Effective-Ebb-2805@reddit
I think the current administration in the US, as corrupt and incompetent as it is, is not THAT stupid. They have to know that if they start a draft, more people will die within the US borders than without because of it. Whoever is tasked with rounding up draft-dodgers who, unlike Trump during the Vietnam War, can't buy their way out, with either bullshit or money (which Trump used successfully), will end up wishing that they were on the front line, rather than shooting it out with their very well armed fellow Americans.
I know whoever shows up at my house to try to throw my kid into a meat grinder started by Israel, just because Netanyahu wants to stay in power and out of prison, better be prepared to put their lives on the line. They will DEFINITELY NOT receive a warm welcome.
jbruce72@reddit
Anybody with morals would go to jail before picking up a weapon for America. If they want to arm and train like 30% of a population that doesn't agree with the military industrial complex and the empire we have forced upon the world that's on them. Would probably be a really dumb move though.
Familiar-Method2343@reddit
It's literally what is happening in Ukraine. They didn't let any men 18-50 out of the country
Dull-Hornet-2596@reddit
I have three sons in that age range 😬
bikumz@reddit
Hell I know it’s a lot smaller but I believe Ukraine is what in the 60s for being able to be conscripted? Or was at some point.
dashingsauce@reddit
I believe they started there and worked their way down; keep the reproductive age population alive so you can, well, repopulate.
bikumz@reddit
I did a little dig and it was AFTER you have trained once you’re trained you’re in reserved and can be called upon service until your 60s
Fancy_Exchange_9821@reddit
If there was a draft in this day and age there’d be another civil war
0220_2020@reddit
My dad graduated high school during the draft era of Vietnam. I was reading his yearbook and a lot of his friends had written very affectionate and provocative messages. My aunt had to explain that they were practicing pretending to be gay to avoid the draft. Or were they?!

Striking Iran will certainly get us one step closer
Unfair_Bunch519@reddit
Once a country has no air defenses its war-fighting capabilities are over. Iran already has a degraded air defense and both Israel and the USA have used local militias as a warm up match. Russia is not a good enough friend to give its allies nukes.
SquidTitsOMG@reddit
That’s just not true. While we can and do cause major damage from afar, there will logistically always need to be boots on the ground to make any real gains anywhere.
mark my words: there will never be a major war where the winning side does not rely heavily on humans engaging in direct combat.
i do think you will see several future losers of major wars who disagree with this prediction

SkyPleasant5707@reddit
or tormenting the rest of the world for another thousand years
Logical___Conclusion@reddit
The wild card is Russia which has a defense agreement with Iran.
There was some indication that Putin would not attack the US when he said that there would be "regional" consequences for a US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, but it is not clear what would happen with an Israeli attack on Iran.
If Israel uses nuclear weapons against Iran (which some experts have said would be required), Russia could respond with nuclear weapons of their own, and the US may respond to Russia with nuclear strikes as well.
A full scale worldwide nuclear war could easily wipe out most of the human race.
Mojave0@reddit
Do they though? Because from what I’ve seen regarding there 20 year partnership it stops short of a mutual defence clause similar to that of Belarus and NK and you also have Kazem Jalali, Iran's ambassador to Moscow on record saying it’s not a mutual defence pact

It seems Israel is looking to start a fight with Iran so they can kill all the people in Gaza and claim it was Iranian missiles.
ScientistRemote4481@reddit
No
This is Middle Eastern Slap game
It never really turns into a full on battle, it's slap for slap, like it was before, Israel will decimate the Nuclear Plans of Iran, Iran will launch big rocket attack that doesn't do anything but is flashy and big, and we are back to normal, that's how it's been for like, I think well over 20 years now
Accurate_Return_5521@reddit
Give me one example please?
Do you really think the corrupt cowards hiding in Tehran can do anything??
Let’s imagine an attack that destroys all nuclear facilities, all coward IRGC facilities and sends the ayatollahs to paradise. What will Iran do ?? Plus there is a very real and big possibility once the coward IRGC is also sent to paradise the Iranians will start a revolution
Then_Deer_9581@reddit
You didn't hear that from me but that's the case. Quite a lot of people in Iran hope IRGC bases get bombed to crap (without damaging civilians) so they can start something.
kupobeer@reddit
God help us all.
Effective-Ebb-2805@reddit
I would think that's what Netanyahu is hoping for. As things stand, he knows the only thing keeping him in power and away from prison (not to mention unventilated by far right, Zionist, Israeli bullets... just ask the ghost of Yitzak Rabin) is the little genocidal war in Gaza. Now, more powerful members of the international community are putting pressure on him to stop that crime against humanity, so he's afraid he'll have to make peace, which will surely get him out of office.
If there's a larger war, he feels he'll be safe. What a repugnant, soulless monster...
toxiccortex@reddit
Most likely will. Iran has hypersonic missiles and has more ballistic missiles than any country in the Middle East. Even without russia being an ally they have the capacity to destroy every U.S. base in the Middle East. Consider the fact that the Iranians PROVIDE Russia with military drones for the war in Ukraine
SeigneurMoutonDeux@reddit
Why? That didn't happen when Israel carried out Operation Opera and bombed the nuclear facilities in Iraq?
--Muther--@reddit
I dont. I also don't think they should do it, but i don't see how a limited strike on nuclear facilities in Iran spills into a wider conflict. We have seen the ineffective response Iran can muster already, its proxies are already decimated and frankly the rest of the Middle East hates Iran or can't muster a response either.
It's a shit situation frankly. I am appalled daily at what I see happening in Gaza also. I dont support Israel in this action, or any frankly.
Dull-Hornet-2596@reddit
They hate Iran, but I’d wager they hate Israel more.
NumbEngineer@reddit
Shit dude i thought the same when iran directly attacked israel and there was a pretty damaging response by Israel. I am shocked that didn't spiral.
Chogo82@reddit
We know Israel has taken out all the air defenses in Syria and most of them in Iran. This means Israel has air superiority and by extension, the US, specifically Diego Garcia base where a bunch of B2 bombers flew to a few weeks ago.
The Iranian sending troops and weapons to Russia is likely a bid to try to get additional air defenses for events like this but even then, the US and Israel together should easily be able to take out those air defenses with the array of weapons they have.
This is all a posturing tactic right now of giving Iran the choice between the carrot and the stick. They can go nicely by signing the deal or it’s going to be bombing. The only factor is how much air defenses Russia and by extension NK and China can send them.
thedoofimbibes@reddit
With the US being forced to step in to preserve Israel’s existence without them resorting to nuclear deterrence. They simply don’t have the manpower and manufacturing capacity to survive a sustained conventional war (Gaza doesn’t count, they’re not fighting a near peer adversary with tanks and aircraft there) without outside support. They never have.
Fancy_Exchange_9821@reddit
sounds like another monday in the middle east

___VenN@reddit
I'm just getting my first car and these bastards are going to cause a new oil crisis through a massive war in the Middle East?
Panda_tears@reddit
So like, maybe a stupid question but, if the Iranians want a nuclear weapon, why not just concentrate the whole of your efforts in one location, bring everything you could possibly need under one roof, and layer it with air defenses and military assets?
SeigneurMoutonDeux@reddit
Stuxnet enters the chat.
They did that. Israel and the US infected their systems with the Stuxnet virus and set the entire program back decades.
THE_Black_Delegation@reddit
Iran is less than a week from a nuclear weapon at any given time...according to US reports anyway. I would consider Iran a undeclared nuclear power at this point. Same as Israel....
owencox1@reddit
then it's still a single point of failure, even with mass defenses. makes offensive planning much easier
renomegan86@reddit
Read elsewhere that this leak could be on purpose to head off any action from Israel on this front to keep them from sucking the US into it. Israel wouldn’t be able to do that without the US’s help.
improbablydrunknlw@reddit (OP)
While I like the idea, isn't Israels whole military built to fight Iran alone? Yes their primary opponent is Hamas, but they're built for Iran.
MyCatIsLenin@reddit
Israel could never defeat Iran. How on earth are they getting there?
improbablydrunknlw@reddit (OP)
Syria is on board now with the removal of sanctions, they're not going to rock the boat this early on to spite Israel
Ghost_of_Durruti@reddit
China won't tolerate being deprived of Iranian oil. Russia would be interested in giving the West a black eye. Without US support, Israel would be squashed like a bug by those two countries in a full blown war. Anyone can read about Israel's pressure points and bottlenecks.
The_Demolition_Man@reddit
Russia cant do shit. They're suck in a major war remember?
China can't project power all the way to the middle east.
BaldBeardedOne@reddit
With soft power they might
4chanhasbettermods@reddit
Soft power won't squash anything. They don't have the economic levers the US can use against state actors.
ridefakie@reddit
Israel doesn't have the bodies. The real danger is if turkey and other Muslim nations view Israel's bombing of Lebanon Syria Egypt Iraq Iran Libya Yemen a worry they too will be hit. Israel is basically the mad dog in the region willing to bite anyone that gets close and if you kick the dog to keep it away, the owner and his friends will come attack you. Iran operates in this way but much more subtle.
Sabre_One@reddit
I disagree.
Iran is simply a bigger country and has ballistic missile capability. Israel has the technology, they don't have the volume. There is a reason US, UK, Jordan, and even Saudi Arabia all stepped in to defend Israel from a missile attack, and why even the US had to push their logistics hard to restock after all the intercepts.
Additionally, Israel relies heavily on US munitions to keep the warfront going; they don't have the production capability for a long-term war.
renomegan86@reddit
Essentially yes, but it’s also incredibly reliant on US funds and equipment. They can barely outfit their soldiers as is. Given the deal the administration is working on with Iran, they would want to avoid being put in this position. (Although funnily with the arms deals announced last week in Qatar, the US is already arming both Israel and its enemies)
GuiltyYams@reddit
In my dreams.
CyroSwitchBlade@reddit
That's not ture.. Israel controls syria's airspace now.. they have a clear path into iran.. they don't need to go all the way around anymore.
4chanhasbettermods@reddit
This is likely why Trump pivoted to recognizing a Palestinian state. Trying to put pressure on Israel not to go through with this at the risk of losing support. Likely didn't have the results they hoped for, so now they're onto the same strategy the Biden administration attempted with leaking the satellite images of Israel staging for the Oct 26th attack on air defenses.
Unfair_Bunch519@reddit
There is no grand strategy with Trump, Netanyahu did something to snub him while the Arab world threw parades to celebrate trump’s arrival. This is because Trump saw the Middle East as having more respect for America than Israel.
4chanhasbettermods@reddit
No one's claiming there's a grand strategy. Jesus fucking christ it's insane that people cant discuss geopolitics without someone whining that Trumps not getting dragged enough.

Expensive_Watch_435@reddit
As much as I really want to agree with you, the strikes were probs decided on day one. In my mind it was decided around the time Israel smoked every ounce of air defense Iran had
_reality_is_humming_@reddit
I agree with people saying this is not going to happen and that this leak was likely on purpose.
Attacking a nuclear facility would be, without a doubt, the single dumbest thing they could do. Its a redline for nato if Russia does it, it would be a red line for the world if anyone does it. The fallout is the issue, and if the cloud of dust blows towards an innocent nation then all bets are off. Anyone attacking a nuclear facility or firing a nuke has signed their own death warrant on a global stage.
No-Preparation-6516@reddit
Something_Awkward@reddit
It’s not new at all. It was made before Biden left office and was first reported by WSJ, not CNN.
