so can we impeach now??? i seriously dont understand how this is still playing out. Everyone involved should be in cuffs, their leader dragged down the street to congress and stripped of his power. This is the ultimate betrayal of the law and should be dealt with swiftly and immediately. If a democrat even said they thought they might do something like this, republicans would have already been storming the gate. I just...Im tired of seeing the end of a system I believed in fail within the first 6 months of being tested.
xlvi_et_ii@reddit
Because it's a coup - Republicans control all branches of government and plan to radically change America as we know it.
As the leader of the Heritage Foundation said - " the country is āin the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.ā
Every Constitution loving American should be on the streets demanding that the law is followed but the wider population is still apathetic about what's happening.
RegionRatHoosier@reddit
The tree of liberty is very very thirsty
Aimless_Alder@reddit
Peaceful revolutions in the last 100 years have a roughly 50% success rate. Violent revolutions have a roughly 26% success rate, and are less likely to transition to democracies if the revolutionary forces take power. The focus should be on peaceful resistance--work slowdowns, strikes, disruptions to key infeastructure--and violence should only be considered when all other options have become impossible.
Brief_Amphibian_3965@reddit
General strike now! I work in K-12 and summertime is a perfect opportunity for this
BenderBRoriguezzzzz@reddit
Or now. When kids are in school and it inconveniences EVERYONE. The more eyes the better.
Brief_Amphibian_3965@reddit
Except general strikes exclude K-12 teachers along with emergency workers. I get it but some kids would be at great risk of harm if they couldnāt be at school
Magnanimous-Gormage@reddit
Source. And peaceful revolutions are rarely called revolutions unless they succeed, so I'd say false comparison.
Aimless_Alder@reddit
Source is Erika Chenowith, the predominant scholar of peaceful resistance. I believe it's specifically from this video.

And it looks like the people will let it happen. They're literally too scared of their neighbors. Americans are soft people.
We'll see tho. They might stand up for themselves any day now.....
HeathersZen@reddit
Hard times create tough people. Tough people create good times. Good times create soft people. Soft people create hard times.
This is how regions and/or the whole world turns in roughly 80 year cycles.
Isaiah_The_Bun@reddit
No, that's an oversimplification. Stalin was tough as hell, did he create good times?
Empathy is a backbone of peaceful democratic societies. Forcing unnecessary hardship on eachother to make people "tough" is one of the many things breaking society down.
Oh well tho. Embrace your suffering I guess.
HeathersZen@reddit
Of course itās an oversimplification. All truisms are.
HeathersZen@reddit
Not apathetic. Just realistic. Protests donāt do shit. If they did, Occupy Wall Street would have resulted in substantive changes. The entire country could show up and theyād just wait it out.
HippyDM@reddit
Protests don't do shit, huh? Civil rights, equal rights, 40 hour work week, and about a thousand other things are here only because of protests. If you're looking to do more than protest, I support that fully, just know that all plans, even good plans, sometimes fail.
HeathersZen@reddit
I never said that protests have never done shit. I understand history. I said that since OWS, the ruling class have learned they can just wait out the protestors while working to undermine them in the media and attack their edges until they crumble.
Name a single protest since then that has generated meaningful, lasting change.
HippyDM@reddit
"Protests donāt do shit."
Literally the comment I responded to, followed by an example of exactly 1 protest movement that failed (sadly, I might add).
HeathersZen@reddit
So, despite the clarification you choose to hear the words you want to hear rather than what I just told you I meant.
Interesting. Perhaps you might want to invest in listening and grace rather than needing to be right on the Internet.
HippyDM@reddit
"Name a single protest since then that has generated meaningful, lasting change."
That's a bit disengenuine, don't you think? You could say "European countries don't commit genocide. Name a time after 9/11 when a european country has commited genocide."
Protests have been effective, and also admittedly non-effective, since the beginning of social living.
TeamRedundancyTeam@reddit
Believing protests don't do shit is very convenient but it ignores an entire history, even recent history, that proves it wrong. Stop spreading this anti-protest bullshit.
snailboyjr@reddit
LetsJustDoItTonight@reddit
Protests don't do nothing, but they have been WAY too heavily relied upon over the past couple decades, and have become pretty much the only way people push back anymore.
Protests can be effective, but only within a broader diversity of tactics like strikes, sabotage, work stoppages, etc.
People stopped getting their hands dirty and stopped backing up their peaceful protests with legitimate threats to capital if ignored, so now they've kinda just become, at best, a networking event.
warpedaeroplane@reddit
Yup. People show up and hold a sign and chant and go home feeling like they did something while the bad actors laugh at them and continue their destruction.
We have somehow convinced ourselves we can throw off a tyrannical yoke without using the only tools that have ever proved effective in doing so. Iām so tired of this protest rhetoric. It wonāt do shit if thereās no threat behind it. Thereās a reason that when right-wing gatherings take place and everybody has their AR and plate carriers that the cops give them protection and perimeter - firstly, those that work forces yada yada and thatās big, but also because without fail, the majority of protests are composed of soft targets who are cosplaying resistance and think that their water bottles and goggles are going to make them look tough. When an entire crowd can circle cops, and the cops donāt feel any more endangered than they did before, the power dynamics are set. Intervene, also tackled, cuffed, grounded. Speak up? Record? Fuck it, you aināt beating the ride.
When that same crowd makes it clear that a lack of peaceful acquiescence can lead to other more forceful typesā¦itās almost like thatās how we got here as a nation.
The campaign against the tools of liberty, by those who claim to love democracy, is hastening the death of both.
Coz131@reddit
Occupy wallstreet failed cause they did not have mass support. Americans don't protest enough honestly.
Aimless_Alder@reddit
Protests can be very effective if they meaningfully disrupt the operation of the economy. There just needs to be a critical mass of support before that happens.
Luchalma89@reddit
Republicans just had to be told that Democrats were stealing an election and they stormed the capitol. How might that day have been different if there were a million people there?
SenorBurns@reddit
On the bright side, they had to be whipped into it for months beforehand by the entire right wing propaganda machine, and they were bussed in by the thousands, and even then, way fewer attacked our Capitol than attended the shit rally.
Magickarpet76@reddit
Key difference there between what they did at the capital and a peaceful protest. Part of me thinks doing something like that would be a measured response on the left to what is happening now...the actual destruction of the US democracy.
Another part of me thinks there really needs to be a general strike now. Protests inconvenience a city for a day, people protesting while also not working or buying things for a longer unspecified time would speak louder.
HeathersZen@reddit
Thank goodness there aren't that many idiotic rubes who have the money and/or ambition to travel to Washington.
JakefromEarth@reddit
Occupy did precipitate change, just the reactionary kind. I don't think it's a coincidence that the culture war ramped up shortly after that movement showed that working class people could unite against the wealthy elites.
south-of-the-river@reddit
Occupy Wall Street failed because the people there did not have a unified plan, and started dragging every social issue they could into the mix. As a result it was very easy for the media and in turn the public to dismiss them.
smittenpigeons@reddit
I think the injection of identity politics was entirely intentional. There was a unified class consciousness building. As soon as it gained momentum there was a huge influx of people interested in infighting. But actually for a period of months there was intelligent dialogue and a lot of structure based on a common goal, overturning Citizens United. There was a lot of organization. Resources for first aid, a system for water and kitchen. It was working well and building up to a point. Then (Boston but it seemed coordinated with what we heard elsewhere) there was a surge of outside influences and things changed. Actually, since that summer has been the rise of identity politics and class consciousness seemingly ignored.
MiserableStop8129@reddit
Ok forget occupy. 2020 saw the largest protest movement in US history. What did it get us? More money for the police state.
south-of-the-river@reddit
Do you mean the anti covid protests? Where corpses were being loaded into freezer trucks while smooth brains were protesting about being told to wear masks?
Personally I think that given the lunacy around the whole event, that's a poor escape example. Theres been many successful protest movements, which is why we don't have special seats in buses and women can now vote. Don't act like protests don't do anything.
MiserableStop8129@reddit
No, Iām talking about the millions of Black Lives Matter protesters across every major and midsize city in the US.
south-of-the-river@reddit
Oh yeah, that was just classic "only in America" sort of stuff, please keep in mind that this is the internet and not every domestic issue of yours is a major thing for anyone else.

south-of-the-river@reddit
I'm saying that you are acting like protests don't matter, which is horseshit. You have this one example that you're using to discredit the entire concept.
BLM wasn't so much an organised protest, as disorganised chaos. No shit you're going to end up with more police spending when cunts are burning down police stations.
ThicckMeats@reddit
No. It failed because big media convinced everyone at home that there was no plan
cellocaster@reddit
So what was the plan?
ThicckMeats@reddit
Occupy wallstreet. Itās a total false premise that a large scale protest like that āneeds a planā any more than the George Floyd protests needed a fucking āplan.ā That was propaganda from the beginning, and you ate it, apparently.
south-of-the-river@reddit

Temporary_Onion9949@reddit
You say that but I'm pretty sure not that long ago all of France protested over workers rights and got their way. Protests don't work so well in the US because we're so wildly divided on every single friggin issue and no one is willing to compromise or have civilized discussions in any meaningful way.
Ricky_Ventura@reddit (OP)
I agree and if I may I'd like to rephrase.Ā Americans have very little national identity.Ā American comes second to Liberal/Conservative.Ā American comes second to Black/White.Ā American comes second to rich/poor.
This makes it difficult for many Americans to stand up for other Americans.Ā They only see the alternative with which they don't identify.
Temporary_Onion9949@reddit

First like the old workers of the world party destroy national borders, dismiss trading values like stalin did with the orthodox church.
Destroy the middle class or what you like call the bourgeoisie. Keep all the workers on a forced equality unless you are a member of the inner party.
No incentive or merit based progress, only if you follow a DEI dogma can you possibly get ahead.
Take control of the majority of news outlets and brsinwash the public that men should play in woman's sports.
Take control of school systems and absolutely do not allow a different viewpoint.
Basically if you are unqualified and undeserving and as long as you are suffientlty anti nationalist or patriotic you may rise to the globalists cabal ala soros and Rothschild.
But you know this right?

Unfortunately, the last nine years have demonstrated that Americans, as a group, really care about money above all else (and are too stupid to understand what actually affects their income). The political will to impeach won't be there until massive numbers of people are unable to pay their mortgage. We just need to hope that happens before the coup is complete.

For the senate you have to flip 3 Republicans on top of every Democrat agreeing for impeachment.
Vice versa, you will need to flip 3 Republicans on top of every Democrat agreeing for impeachment for Congress.

The Constitution still exists.
It would just mean that the congressmen who refuse to impeach are complicated in the unconstitutional actions.
There is a breaking point even if ~20% of the population is too deep into the cult to see reason.
The economy will have problems pissing of normal people as well as those with money. That "big beautiful bill" is either going to stall or ruin/kill people. At some point the supreme court will either have to hold the admin in contempt or show they lack the balls to do anything. Other countries will continue to distance themselves and establish alliances/trade without the US.Ā

Expensive_Watch_435@reddit
Lol dirty little secret my ass, the people in Russia can't even publicly criticize Putin without catching a fine or a sentence. Propaganda only works so much.
SpockShotFirst@reddit
A common technique among pollsters is to divide survey respondents into two groups. One group is given a list of three politicians and asked "How many of these politicians do you generally support?" The second group is given a list of four politicians -- the first three plus Putin. The difference between the two survey groups is Putin's estimated support.
Propaganda works.
