Do you find that rain brings a comfort that sunny/warm weather doesn't?

I find it puts me at ease for sure. I can't explain it, but I just feel comfortable when it rains. Granted, I only feel at ease with it when I have a roof over my head. I wouldn't voluntarily go out and get drenched in rain, but watching it, hearing, just brings me comfort.

I know it's personal preference, but I am just so surprised and shocked at how many here enjoy the rain and welcome it, even at this time of the year. I find my mental health and my mood in general takes a massive beating during gloomy periods like this. It's not too bad if it's November/December etc when it's expected. But as we've had weeks now of fluctuating, cloudy weather with only occasional sun, I am just finding it very difficult. I am considering a SAD lamp just to see if that gives me a little boost. I work from home, and so maybe that's an aggravating factor. For me, anytime it's blue skies, sunny, bright, my entire mood shifts upwards and I feel way more upbeat and energised.

I agree with you, it's unreal how much better I feel when it's sunny. I used to scoff at the idea of going on a pool holiday rather than a more cultural trip, but I went to Tenerife in October last year and I came back totally energised. I'm not made for winter

Agreed. I’m happiest in 30°C heat though, during the heatwave last year i think I was the only person who didn’t complain lol. Love sleeping in the warm, walking around the house in shorts and not cleaning my floor constantly because the dog has walked in wet paw prints everywhere.

If you don't need or want to be out in it, being cosy inside while it rains outside is very comforting. I'm also finding that as summers seemingly get hotter, and the ground and plants more visibly parched, every year there's increasingly comfort (or perhaps relief) in summer rain.

I would disagree, I’m a big fan, and seen them quite a few times, and whilst Brian isn’t as interactive as other performers, he does interact with the audience, as does Stefan. They’re also quite strict on no phones too, so it’s a different experience I would say to seeing other bands. All in all I’ve seen them 3 times on this tour, and would recommend!

I’ve seen them live 3 times pretty spread apart. I was 12 the first time, 20 the second time and 27 the last time. And tbh I loved them every single time, I think they perform great, and sound so good live! You’re right about them not being as energetic on stage as some bands, but it’s still a great show and I think their performance style suits their vibe.

They do sound good, but compared to some artists who really make an effort to engage with their audiences, Placebo does fall a bit flat. The one I went to, not so much as a comment about the town they were in or anything, just a sequence of songs and then leave the stage.

That's not uncommon, I've seen loads of acts like that. We're there for the music afterall. It can be nice when they go off script a bit, but I don't tend to hold it against a band/artist if they just stick to playing the songs. Not everybody has that sort of confidence to have a great stage presence.

I would say they used to be a lot better than they are now. Brian seems to get laryngitis or whatever it is a lot and it has an impact. They’re not as interactive as they used to be either. It’s still worth it if you really like them.

I hate my body so I love a washout summer. When it's hot, I can't wear the kind of clothes you should because people give me horrible looks in public. When I was slimmer, I would wear shorts, strappy vest tops. I still wear that at home. But when I go outside, I feel the need to wear a cardigan unless it's absolutely boiling... And then I'm uncomfortable the whole time. I have ADHD and binge eating is a big part of that, but I didn't know until I was diagnosed at 25. It's still a struggle because you hit tolerance, so you eat more again, then to reduce your tolerance you have to stop the medication. Which means binge eating again! It's been pretty warm this week and I've been sweating in my cardigan because I had to go out for appointments. Seeing all the slim people showing off their bodies, which I could have had if I didn't have this crappy genetic disease. Then it rained today, so I could wear my summer raincoat! It's thin material so not too hot, but when I wear it when it's not raining, people stare at me and make comments like "aren't you hot in that?". Yes, but I look like a whale underneath. But today it was raining, so most people were wearing raincoats.

I can absolutely relate to you here. I got invited out to the pub with a few mates when we had the last spell of sunny weather and I spent the whole day beforehand stressing over whether I could get away with wearing a jacket to hide my hideous, lumpen body. I decided that being hot and potentially uncomfortable was better than being self conscious in just a t-shirt. The first greeting I got was; "Bloody hell, don't you know it's summer!"

My cousins own a cafe in Belfast and they notice that on sunny days they get far more customers as more people are walking around the city. This summers constant rain means they’ve had a lot less customers, so the rainy weather actually makes it worse for them financially. June in Ireland was sunny and warm, whereas this July has been super wet and dull, they’ve had customer numbers drop almost in half. Just shows you how rainy dull weather can really affect some areas of the economy quite negatively.

Please, just enough of summer. I never liked it, never will. Those who do, please, stop judging me for praying for rain, hail, snow, and cold. I have to go to work just like you, and I'd happily do so with a brolly, rain gear, or a jumper if it's a wee bit nippy. I'm sorry if I sound frustrated, but I had to do groceries, cook and clean my entire place, and I'm drenched in sweat, and I can feel the migraine coming. Doesn't help when the heat and the sun are both triggers for the headache. They said it would rain the entire week, and all of a sudden its 26 deg outside with the sun bright enough to euthanize an ox.

I agree and I think large numbers of people feel the same way. I have a theory that rain and rainy weather, way back in our development, meant there were less predators and/or other tribes cutting about during a storm, so your space, your cave, dwelling etc, felt that bit more safe as the risks of attack were lower in a rain storm.

Yes - I lived in Manchester for 5 years or so before moving to other side of Pennines and I actually really miss the rain. Especially the summer rain that occasionally leant itself to thunderstorms. I mean, don't get me wrong - if you get unexpectedly stuck in it or it ruins plans (as it's having a good go at with the cricket, currently) then it's a fucker but I miss those summer days where could walk around in shorts and not be bothered I'm gonna get soaked because the rain isn't unpleasantly cold and it just feels uplifting. I hadn't really appreciated until I lived it how very *very* much less rain the east side of the Pennines gets. I think West Yorkshire is (very much anecdotal and could be misremembered) a degree or two colder but it rains on *loads* fewer days.

I’m from SW Scotland living inLondon now. Londoners and foreigners living there always claim to “like” the rain. They get a rainy day every now and then, not usually windy and rarely that heavy. I grew up with real rain. Rain that didn’t seem to end for a month. Summers distinct from winters because the day was longer and the rain was warmer. Rain accompanied by wind rendering an umbrella useless. The rain lasted long enough that you HAD to go out and couldn’t just wait it out being “cosy”. Puddles didn’t dry, grass was saturated. Rain is only annoying to me. Definitely never brought me comfort.

As others have said, if you don't need to be out for whatever reason and it isn't days of it, I quite like a little rain. Less so now I have a child as a day spent reading, watching movies or otherwise pottering around the house tend to be made up trying to occupy a young child and not hours of watching mind numbing TV. Also now I live quite close to a river that flooded earlier this year and was about a meter away from back fence, heavy rain is a little stressful. So in theory yes, but in my current situation, less so.

For me if it’s sunny there’s a feeling you have to be out doing something, to make the most of the weather. I’d feel guilty just sitting watching TV for example. When it’s rainy then there’s no expectation, you can chill at home guilt free. Maybe that contributes to the home comfort feeling

Me, my mum and sister stupidly decided to take the dogs out for a big walk yesterday. I mentioned a few times that we’re due thunderstorms and they just shook it off and said it would blow through and it won’t be that bad. Fast forward a couple of hours, we’re lost in the middle of open fields, soaking wet with the wind lashing at us when they finally admit it probably won’t blow through. I secretly loved it because it made getting home all that much more cosier.

It's the opposite for me. I hate the rain. I'm a very outdoorsy type person and I don't like feeling wet/damp very much. I honestly don't think I have any real indoor hobbies or interests so I feel like living in the UK is like a lesson in frustration, boredom and depression because the weather impacts my life so much. Sure you carry on and ignore the fact it's pissing down and carry on anyway, but it defiantly detracts from the enjoyment. I have spent most of my life growing up, living and working in warmer / dryer places (Southern France, Spain, all round Africa and the Middle East) but returned to the UK more or less permanently when I was in my 40's and can honestly say that the weather here is at the root of all my issues and frustrations about living in the UK. I mean, I have been waiting over 3 weeks to paint a shed. I need two dry days. It doesn't even have to be sunny. It's mid July FFS!

There is more to it than being cozy and the sound of it being soothing I reckon it's an evolutionary quality in humans as rain indicates life, crop growth, it means the swelling of rivers and grasslands becoming vibrant, it means that the animals we needed to hunt will be out eating the new shoots from the rain. I personally think that's why we find it soothing.

Absolutely. When you are forced outside with no reprieve, rain sucks. You typically just end up cold and damp, it gets harder to do the things you need to do due to your hands getting cold and stiff, objects getting wet, and like in general becomes that less pleasant and more uncomfortable. Rain when you have a choice however, can be lovely. When you know the end game is being back home where you can warm up and dry off, the cold and wet becomes a temporary thing that you can easily website and enjoy the experience of - the feel of the rain, the smell of the atmosphere, and just watching how the water alters everything around you. Similarly, when you are home already, there is definitely something comforting in being able to turtle up, all cozy in your little bubble and listen to the rhythmic sounds of the rain, knowing there will be that fresh, clean, post-rain atmosphere outside to enjoy afterwards. The sun that everyone clamours for? I generally find it too hot, uncomfortable to be out doing much activity in, and something that wears me out far quicker.

I hate it. It's terrible for my mental health to be home all the time. This winter was terrible. We had snow in APRIL!! (I live in Rossendale) I've moved away from city (Manchester) for many reasons and one of them is to be able to go on walks. Rossendale has a lot of pathways. I can see horses, sheep, cows and ALPACAS!! For free!! I miss my alpacas (they are not mine but I can dream). We've already had too many rainy weeks. Months even. I am sick. June was the only month where we could do some stuff. This is depressing. Staying at home every weekend it's not comfortable and it doesn't bring any joy.

I love the rain. I remember 2 years ago, as my dad was dying of cancer, I suddenly had a thought that he will never experience the feeling of rain hitting his skin again. It really opened my eyes and made me super grateful for the small things in life we take for granted. Now, whenever it rains, I walk outside and allow myself to feel that cold refreshing rain hit my skin, because I never know when it'll be my last. There's something so humble and regenerating when you stand there, head tilted back, just letting the rain hit your face. I urge all of you to try it at least once. Forget about getting wet, or cold. You can dry off and warm up after. Just take a minute to really feel alive in that moment. It's beautiful.

I’m in the North East of England and it’s been raining now for about 12 hours non stop. It’s apparently going to rain all day too (currently 6:20am). Yes. My no1 relaxing thing to do is to curl up in my favourite chair in the conservatory and read a book listening to the rain pattering on the conservatory roof. It’s so peaceful. I think rain also takes away some of the laziness guilt: on a nice sunny day if I’m off work I feel like I ought to be either out enjoying it, or doing something productive. On a rainy day you can shrug it off with “oh it’s raining so can’t do much, have to have a duvet day”.

Yes, but only what I call ‘proper rain’ - the kind that I can hear and smell. I moved to the UK from the tropics and was actually surprised at how little of that you get here. Feels more like there’s just more frequent drizzles. Where I’m from, it can rain *heavily*, without stopping, for like 2 weeks during monsoon season. With climate change the yearly storms there are becoming more catastrophic but I think historically and culturally we tend to romanticise rain. We have a lot of love songs set in the rain, for example. Kids love playing in the rain (it’s always warm there) and generally I think it also gives everyone some relief from the constant heat. I think I tend to associate rain with positive feelings because I grew up in that kind of culture.

I like both - they bring different levels of enjoyment. However, rain definitely gives me more 'comfort'. Assuming it was a day with nothing on: It instantly gets rid of any pressure to have to go outside and do something worthwhile in the good weather. It's like a free pass to actually accept that you can stay in and play videogames, watch films, read a book. I also like that it gives you an excuse to snuggle with your partner, get wrapped up in a blanket, put on a good cup of tea. Also, it's really nice seeing & hearing the rain & knowing you don't have to go out in it. Everything I just said gets taken away if you actually have to go do something, or if you already had plans. Then, sun gives me more comfort because it literally makes it more comfortable and easy to do whatever I wanted to do.

No the opposite. The rain and cold makes me in pain, my joints swollen and I take much more pain relief. The sun and the heat make my joints and back much less painful and I take less pain relief. I used to like the rain when I was camping hearing it tapping on the tent but on the whole it causes me pain. Also rain and wheelchairs aren’t a good combo- your hands get wet and cold and your legs get soaked as they stick out more than people standing!

Right now I'm layying in bed and liistening to the rain outside. Very relaxing. Just as well as I live in Wales. If you like the sound of rain look up soundscapes on YouTube. You can't 8+ hour recordings of rain in the city, in the rainforest etc. I WFH and I often have them on as audio backgrounds. It's a happy medium between silence and listening to music ( which I sometimes find distracting)

Yes, but it’s contextual. For example, here in the UK it rains all the time, and getting wet on your way to work is the least but comforting. However, if there’s just been a dry spell and it’s raining while you’re at home with no priorities for the day then you’re spot on.

Rain frees you from the unconscious stress of feeling like you have to socialise or get out and about. If it rains all weekend and on Monday, someone asks what you did at the weekend, you are much more comfortable saying, "Bugger all, it was pissing down." If the weather was warm and sunny, you feel like you have to say you went out and about, did this and that. I'm not sure if I explained that properly, but hopefully, you get the idea.

I’m not a fan of the heat, so yeah, I like it when it rains outside. It’s been very helpful currently when you compare the temperature here to many other countries at the moment. I also like the sound of the rain, which helps me concentrate, like any other white noise. I’m not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but it clears the air of pollutants and other particles, which helps to make you feel better and prevents hay fever, if you suffer from it (which I do).

I love wet weather, to a degree. I have spent many a wild camping night with the rain pounding down. I have also ridden plenty of mountain bike trails in the wet. However, soaking rain can be one of the most miserable experiences ever. It gives a sense of calm that other weather cannot. If it's not too heavy. I know that plenty of people that say wet weather is the best, and plenty of people that say sunny weather is best. I would classify myself right in the middle, I love both. When you have built a shelter that keeps the rain out, has a roaring fire and somewhere comfortable to sleep...I have had the best night's sleep ever. Its very unique in that sense to me.

I walked for an hour with the dog in gentle yet persistent rain this afternoon. There was no one else about, and I had a decent coat on with a good hood and waterproof shoes. I thought how lovely it is being out in the rain when you have gear that keeps you warm and dry. "There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing".

Sometimes, but it has to be just right. Before we had kids I enjoyed some rain, it was an excuse to play some game and have a lazy morning. Rainfall when it gets too hot is great, that musty smell, reminds me of holiday. But that long non stop cold drizzle Feb-April can go fuck it’s self, also when rain messes up my plans, can equally get fucked.
