My spouse is *p r e s s e d* over the amount of speed tape on this 787, lol. (Departing SCL)

Speedtape is also a composite. š
I_Fix_Aeroplane@reddit
I mean, it's fine. The only thing that irks me is how poorly it was done. Not in an unsafe way, it just looks like garbage. They didn't round off the corners, and you can see the lower layers sticking out from the upper layers. Who did this, the apprentice with no oversight?
AirPleasant5311@reddit
My sister mom and dad flew from Easter island to Santiago with a Latam aircraft that had the same type of tape covering the whole wing.
It suffered an engine failure after takeoff and then safely returned back to land at the departure airport. Needless to say my sister cried the whole turn until landing.
HeliosRunner@reddit
tell me this is AI
Adjutant_Reflex_@reddit
Pretty standard for 787s that are due for a repaint. I was on an ANA last year that looked close to 50% speed tape. Itās not an issue.
bfgvrstsfgbfhdsgf@reddit
Think I might make white speed tape. Problem solved.
blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
I know that, but my spouse refused to believe me, lol.
Conscious_Raisin_436@reddit
In your spouseās defense, perception matters and airlines really owe it to passengers to provide airplanes which donāt appear to be duct taped together.
Itās like if youāre on trial for murder and your attorney shows up in board shorts. The shorts have nothing to do with his quality as an attorneyā¦. But that doesnāt make it okay.
Corleone2345@reddit
Thatās also why plane engines are almost always white or a light color. It is perceived as less heavy and therefore easier to stay up in the air.

losjoo@reddit
Speed tape is precisely defined by the FAA. That wing has exactly the number of pieces it needs. If just one comes off there will be catastrophic failure.
Make sure you let her know this and tell her that she needs to monitor each piece and inform the pilot if one comes off.
echoedsun@reddit
OPās spouse is a man (see below) - you and u/shikatanai (and Iām sure others) just assumed it was a woman! Would recommend having a think about why.
Horror-River-3861@reddit
A tHinK aBoUt WhY dude get over yourself lmao
DickRiculous@reddit
But how else can I imply moral superiority under a false pretense of wanting to help my fellow man?
DickRiculous@reddit
While Iāve been about as liberal as they come, I have been starting to feel like there are far more important things to worry about than making sure no one ever feels like I have an implicit bias or that no one is ever offended or feels like a microaggression has occurred. I would rather worry about stopping the dictatorship before it starts than quibble about perceived privilege or the paradox of tolerance. Iāve just decided to be equally intolerant of everybody now. Only worried about making sure my kid has the best future possible because I canāt fucking control a damn thing else in this world.
literallyjuststarted@reddit
Cause women arenāt usually into airplanes. Why else?
sasheenka@reddit
Thatās news to me. A woman with interest in airplanes.
pointsandputts@reddit
Would you say your fellow hobbyists are majority male or female?
sasheenka@reddit
I have no idea, I donāt know anyone in real life, male or female, who is into airplanes :)
pointsandputts@reddit
So would you agree that even in your circle āwomen arenāt usually into airplanesā as the comment you replied to said?
sasheenka@reddit
No, as I said, the only other person I know in real life who is into airplanes is my grandmother. A woman. I donāt know any dudes with the interest in my circle.
pointsandputts@reddit
Right. But most women you know are not if you only know one who is. So even in your circle āwomen arenāt usually into airplanesā if only 1/x is.
sasheenka@reddit
And since I donāt know any men who are into aviation, no men are, by your logic. Thatās just silly.
pointsandputts@reddit
Iād agree with that. Men arenāt usually into airplanes. See how easy it is to tell the truth instead?
sasheenka@reddit
So if men arenāt usually into airplanes why did you think the airplane enthusiast OP was a man and the spouse a woman?
pointsandputts@reddit
I didnāt. How did you arrive at that conclusion?
sasheenka@reddit
The person I originally replied to did. You just kinda hopped on, so I thought you thought the same, otherwise he whole convo is meaningless š
pointsandputts@reddit
I just thought and continue to think your logic is flawed and was curious as to how you reach conclusions. I appreciate your responses!
sasheenka@reddit
You say since I only know one other woman enthusiast and no man, that āwomen are usually not into airplanesā but I say by that logic āmen arenāt eitherā. I donāt think we will change each others views on that. I just try not to presume peopleās gender online.
pointsandputts@reddit
Good for you! Neither did I, but I didnāt feel the need to announce it until it was assumed that I personally did. Thatās why this whole thing is funny to me; your logic seems to indicate that you somehow represent a majority or at least a plurality of women as a whole. I think thatās really funny.
sasheenka@reddit
That was never even implied š

blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
Iām married to a man, and heās an engineer. Weāre from Alaska and have flown on some janky-ass planes in and out of some remote villages. He knows what speed tape is for, was just alarmed by the sheer amount of it.

Well in that case remind him about all the times heās designed something ugly but effective.

generalhonks@reddit
Oh man, when I worked the ramp, I used to see some aircraft come in with tons of speed tape on sections pax couldnāt see. CRJs are the worst offenders for some reason.
blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
Yeah, but to be fair, CRJs are workhorses with nearly impeccable records, no? So, maybe the key is⦠MORE SPEED TAPE.
generalhonks@reddit
I mean, I have nothing against CRJs. Iāll take a good old CRJ-900LR Next Gen over an E170 or E175 LW. Iāve never had a CRJ break down on my ramp, only E-jets and narrow bodies.
AggressorBLUE@reddit
To save money they switch from speed to masking on the areas you cant see
erhue@reddit
to be honest, it's shockingly bad... This wasn't necessary on older aircraft. It's now with composite wings that suddenly this stuff has become commonplace

Yup, theyre in for warranty work. Have to strip and sand those wings. Also for uv damage, hence the peeling.
Pattern_Is_Movement@reddit
Tbf I've been flying for 40 years and I've never seen that much speed tape. I'd be a little unsettled at least.
McCheesing@reddit
Curious if this is unique to the composite wing? Iāve never seen close to this much speed tape on a metal-skinned airplane
AggressorBLUE@reddit
IIRC its due to the new type of primer the airlines have to use due to environmental regs. The older zinc(?) based stuff was solid, but also apparently liquid cancer.
spazturtle@reddit
Zinc Chromate is what you are thinking of.
McCheesing@reddit
The EPA strikes again!!!
TMK there used to be a condition called ārooferās jawā or something of the like, which was basically jaw cancer from holding galvanized (zinc coated) nails in their mouths. The incidence decreased significantly on the advent of the nail gun.
Zinc primer being liquid cancer definitely checks out
PowwowPuffer@reddit
Yes, comparatively paint has trouble adhering to the composite materials. There's various reasons why, but chemical reactions, wingflex, and UV radiation from sunlight are most likely contributors
strat-fan89@reddit
Temperature change at altitude is a real paint killer! I see it in gliders, those that get flown high in the mountain waves age a lot quicker than those that live their lives in lower altitudes.
ABoutDeSouffle@reddit
High altitudes also have a lot more UV hitting the plane.
strat-fan89@reddit
Yes, also true!
Ancient_Mai@reddit
UV exposure on composite structures is no bueno. From my understanding the added flex of the composite wing is hard on the paint too. So it gets covered up with tape to prevent the degradation of the composite.
Adjutant_Reflex_@reddit
I wish I could post my picture in comments. Just went back to see if I was misremembering and nope, there was even more than OPs, haha.
Busterlimes@reddit
Weighs more than paint, do they account for that during fueling? Is this why my luggage is so much more expensive to check than 20.years ago.
81Ranger@reddit
To be fair, it's not like Boeing is inspiring confidence in people, lately....
tankmode@reddit
why dont they just make the paint be āspeed tape the whole wingā and call it a day
zackks@reddit
Absolutely correct. Chipped paint that exposes primer or underlying composite is the real problem as the resin used in 787 composite degrades too fast in UV.
FuddsterCapo@reddit
Prior aviation maintainer Air Force. Not an issue and weāre proud of over using that tape! š

ploki122@reddit
I don't think they're saying speed tape is a safety risk. I believe they're saying that pilots/airlines will fly dangerously damaged planes patched with speed tape, frequently enough there you don't have enough fingers to count the number of lawsuits that were won.

Hey, I want to know why a 787 would have this much tape, but sadly everyone's going to respond to your wonky title.
ItsJustSimpleFacts@reddit
Paint doesn't stick well to the carbon fiber. carbon fiber needs the uv protection from the paint. When the paint peels they speed tape it to keep the air frame protected until the next repaint.
nj4ck@reddit
Is this a fixable issue, do they eventually get repainted with a paint that sticks better, or is this just how it's always going to be with carbon wings?
Top-Treacle9964@reddit
This is the current situation when paint peels off even if they find a better paint that adheres better it will still peel after awhile

All aircraft in the fleet are rotated around the network, airlines donāt use particular planes for particular routes :)
blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
Thatās probably more accurate. My Spanish isnāt great and she mightāve (rightfully) misunderstood me asking about the crew, not the plane.
747ER@reddit

blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I was actually really surprised a 787 flew the route. I wasnāt thinking it was that popular of a destination.
Bobbytrap9@reddit
Why do they do that actually?
igloofu@reddit
They actually sometimes do fly the same route repeatedly. For example, I watch streamers from LMPA almost every day. There is one daily roundtrip for BAW from EGGK. Almost every single day it is the same A320 G-GATU.
747ER@reddit
Yes, smaller airlines like BA EuroFlyer will sometimes do this. Itās not as common with large airlines like LATAM.

AdElectronic822@reddit
Thats normal with Latam, they love to see their planes lost their paint, ive seen A320s with big patches of paint lost and the anticorrosive paint only.

/don't cut that cable tie, it's structural
bears-eat-beets@reddit
There's a colonial woman on the wing. She was churning butter and dressed in traditional garb.
Fairycharmd@reddit
not again
ABoutDeSouffle@reddit
Yeah, I would run from that plane screaming. I know it isn't structural, but that's not a great look at all.
Fairycharmd@reddit
that itty-bitty tiny amount of speed tape is like mosquitoes on your car bumper. It really does absolutely nothing to the aircraft.
Fairycharmd@reddit
Point out to him that speed tape is a bit like bugs on the car before you need a carwash. it doesnāt look very nice but itās not bothering anybody.
Honest: the airflow over the wing is not bothered remotely by that tiny amount of speed tape.
I only signed off as QA for the 787, donāt take my word for it.

Iād be a bit pressed too, but I always remember the words of my late Dad, who traveled 200k miles a year on airlines for work: āif the plane aināt safe, the pilot wonāt fly it.ā
(Note: Dad did not pass away in an aircraft disaster, thank goodness š )
tiefseeastronaut@reddit
The Thai 787 iāve been on January 2024 had double the speedtape on its wings. :ā)
Lawfull_carrot@reddit
About 8647 pieces
alex9001@reddit
Short answer is theyāre just to protect the carbon fiber from the sun (since paint is gone).Ā
If we knew masking tape would stay stuck on at 500mph then it could just as easily be masking tape insteadĀ
FOXYRAZER@reddit
that's like a thousand dollars of tape lol
SomeBiPerson@reddit
expensive as hell, as is everything for the Aviation industry
kamaradski@reddit
speedtape saves lifes...
...but it wont keep your wing on
moar_bubbline@reddit
That's actually aesthetic as hell, I love it (and speed tape too)
Tolstoy_mc@reddit
It's a Boeing so they only need to worry if the tape is on the doors

Speed tape makes it go faster. There is a reason itās called Speed Tape.

Wayfinity@reddit
I think you're thinking of speed holes. It's an easy mistake to make and I can't understand why they haven't added any here.
interstellar-dust@reddit
Add both. Make them go supersonic. Make $$$$. Make Boom go bust. š¤£

My god! You're a genius!

jwakfie@reddit
Iām guessing this a latam flight
Stoney3K@reddit
That's a known issue with the 787 because the paint is very prone to chipping off and the speed tape protects the carbon fiber underneath it.

wwhijr@reddit
When you land in those bad neighborhoods sometime you take damage. Speed tape is the best way to cover the bullet holes and get back out of Dodge.
Clustershag@reddit
I know itās fine, 100 mile an hour tape is the best, but an airline that neglects their planes this much does not have a good maintenance program.
KoenigseggCCR@reddit
I love SCL, have flown in and out a few times. what a beautiful country!
Vakua_Lupo@reddit
For goodness sake Paint your Plane ASAP!
JLZ13@reddit
Boeing was due to release the painting SB and the concurrent edge & cap seal SB last year... Which will solve all this speed tape issue.
The new date is June, but I doubt it will be released
railker@reddit
If you wanna cough up the few hundred grand to repaint it and down it out of the fleet for a week, go for it. š Bet you won't get long out of it before it's got tape on it again. Permanent solution still in progress.
Pooch76@reddit
Iād like to see hobbiest build and paint a scale model with speed tape like this lol
SeniorEntertainer993@reddit
Just tell them they have to do that because the wing is made of plastic
ImReverse_Giraffe@reddit
Tell her that airline companies care a hell of a lot about keeping their planes. They don't want to lose a plane in a crash. If its not flight worthy, its not flying.
blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
Iām married to a man.
jdelaossa@reddit
Tell her the aircraft was in a shooting⦠and that the tape will be rated if she speaks too much
blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)

MemoryIllustrious782@reddit
Which airline is this? Maybe Iām spoiled always flying Delta and Alaska but never seen a commercial liner use this much while still in normal service.

blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)

This man also freaks the fuck out if Iām driving a stick shift in a foreign city to the point where I threatened to blindfold him because thatās as much good as he was doing, lol. If ya canāt see it, it canāt hurt you!
icanfly_impilot@reddit
I mean, your spouse on some level deemed it acceptable by not removing themselves from the aircraft prior to pushback
blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
In our marriage, Iām the one obsessed with aviation so he looked at me and said, āthis shit is normal, right?ā And I said, ādo you see me getting off the plane?ā He was not okay but also reeeeally wanted to go to Easter island. Ha!

New slang unlocked.
Pressed, Iām assuming it means stressed?
blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
Yes! Like stressed or strained or uncomfortable.
philocity@reddit
What the hell does pressed mean
blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
Stressed. Strained. Uncomfortable.
BeardedManatee@reddit
Is that a xennial play on "depressed"?
blissfully_happy@reddit (OP)
I always take it as my students saying theyāre stressed, not depressed.
Sp4rt4n423@reddit
...I mean this with respect. Speak like an adult. Not your student. Pressed makes no sense. Stressed I understand.
chunkymonk3y@reddit
Why are you getting so pressed over this?
Sp4rt4n423@reddit
I guess I'll get downvoted back to my era when we used full words. :(
iknowwhatyoudid1234@reddit
What era was that were you speaking proper old timey English or are you just a hypocrite?
Sp4rt4n423@reddit
I'm not a hypocrite, because I don't use words like pressed, sus, ts, cos, in conversation. So I suppose I come from different era.
iknowwhatyoudid1234@reddit
Ya but language is constantly fluid and evolving always has been always will be. Not really fair to say someone isn't acting like an adult because they recognize and adapt to that. It's kind of like how the older generation thinks the younger generations music sounds like shit.
Sp4rt4n423@reddit
Music and language are two different things. You can't just shorten a word like "cos" because you feel like it. It doesn't make it a word.
iknowwhatyoudid1234@reddit
So you have never abbreviated anything? You've never said bro and you spell color colour? You've never used any of the slang from your generation?
kdegraaf@reddit
Yup.
The zoomers are welcome to yeet me back to that era, fr fr ong, no cap.
Skibidi.
BeardedManatee@reddit
I'm imagining someone saying, "yo if DE-pressed means I'm sad then what does pressed mean?" And they decided that it meant stressed.
igloofu@reddit
Could also be like "pressed for time" or "pressed for results". Like have 'had pressure applied to do [X]". Dunno, something like that.
BeardedManatee@reddit
I like it.
shadowbannedlol@reddit
If you have a lot of pressure on you, then you are pressed
BeardedManatee@reddit
That does make sense.
UnfairStrategy780@reddit
As someone who is well aware of speed tape Iād have to admit Iād definitely double take that much being applied to the wing
Efficient_Sky5173@reddit
More companies should do that.
Busby5150@reddit
May not be a safety issue but it is certainly a bad look. Kinda screams low budget.

Sir, it is time to move with the advancement of technology! That, my dear sir, is photovoltaic tape. It actually capitalizes on the amount of time the plane stays above the clouds to harvest solar energy and assist with powering the engines. /s (Sad I need to add thatā¦)
WeatherGuys@reddit
What other business do you pay top dollar to use, only to see tape covering all the worn parts? Understand why it's needed and that it's definitely safe, but it adds to air travel looking like it's tired and falling apart.

I get that itās speed tape, but itās not the quality but the publicās perception of quality/safety that matters. This isnāt good optics for any carrier/manufacturer.
railker@reddit
Well good thing every carrier/manufacturer is doing it, then. A350's got the same issues, was it Qatar in a big fight with Airbus for a few years over it? Can't remember.
Jhopsch@reddit
This will only become a more common sight as the US descends from grace. The early signs of decadence are already showing in major cities, public services, etc
Still_Suspect_7233@reddit

Hugo_5t1gl1tz@reddit
Duct tape that costs $100+ per roll
