So… Emirates wants a new A380.

Just read about this today.
Very very recent News.
Do you think we might soon see the A380neo soon-ish?
Maybe powered by 4 Rolls-Royce UltraFan Engines.
eruditezero@reddit
Airbus has zero interest in this as it would be completely uneconomical to do.
xXCrazyDaneXx@reddit
...depending on what Emirates are willing to pay for the aircraft. The unit price would be astronomical, but it could be done.
Realistically though, Emirates aren't going to pay the price that would make it profitable for Airbus to do.
discombobulated38x@reddit
There's no way Emirates could afford to pay for an entire flight test campaign for a new aircraft and engine pairing purely off their order.
BlaxeTe@reddit
Emirates currently has 13.5b USD cash reserves at the moment. (https://www.emirates.com/media-centre/emirates-group-achieves-record-profit-of-aed-227-bn-us-62-bn-in-2024-25/)
They could afford it, however it would not be smart
SpaceBoJangles@reddit
Why would it not be smart? Their business model is exactly what the A380 was intended to support. The 777X family is very nice, but does not reach the level of passenger capacity nor prestige that the double-decker affords. The name of the game right now is premium cabin space, and no aircraft does it like the A380.
CessnaBandit@reddit
Thats not enough
discombobulated38x@reddit
That is impressive - they could afford to do it maybe once with that
xXCrazyDaneXx@reddit
Aren't Emirates owned by the ICD? Which is literally a branch of the government of Dubai...
eldodo06@reddit
Plane manufacturers don’t make new planes just to satisfy one airline. The future for Emirates is the A350 and the 777X. They need to accept it.
twarr1@reddit
“Plane manufacturers don’t make new planes just to satisfy one airline” Unless that airline is American Airlines
spicesucker@reddit
Didn’t AA straight up just state that was making a new 737 and Boeing felt they had to follow?
coloradokyle93@reddit
Or Pan Am, or whoever it was that ordered the 747SP
mattrussell2319@reddit
Not intentionally, at least …
Late-Mathematician55@reddit
Just wondering how far behind their 777X delivery schedule is?
discombobulated38x@reddit
Not at all
I am unable to specifically comment on that, however I can very definitively say an A380NEO isn't happening unless the N in NEO stands for No Engine Option.
juanmlm@reddit
A glider A380 would be interesting.
GreenSubstantial@reddit
Needs a A340 Zwilling to tow it. Or maybe the Stratolaunch Roc, which is a 747 Zwilling concept in a modern way.
DullMind2023@reddit
I read somewhere that Qatar has a spare 747-8 that they want to sell…

Might become the new VC-25B right?
PotentialMidnight325@reddit
No, never. It would be a insane undertaking to restart the whole supply chain. The final assembly linens line gone too. The building houses a A350 FAL. Where do people get the idea that you just can restart a production line?!?
Sustainable_Twat@reddit
I would love to see an A380 with modern technology, but alas, in my humble opinion, I don’t we’ll ever see it.
danflood94@reddit
Airbus has completely repurposed the production line for the A320S. The investment wouldn't be worthwhile. They made no money on them last time around, and now we are talking about a new production line with very limited numbers for Emirates. Just not happening.
Slash787@reddit
It's been a month since this news.....Airbus will not make it.
