Which person or institution widely seen as a “villain” in UK culture or society actually deserves to be seen as a hero?

Dentists/ Dental staff. People are quick to blame and hate dentists for their own problems. Receptionists bend over backwards to find help for patients more than GP ones (ours give out of hours numbers if we have no appointments or ask dentists for advice/ pass on messages rather than blankly say no). We have to cope with scared, anxious and patients in a variable amount of pain. We arn't there to be abused and demanded, we can only advise and try to get you out out of pain. They are the good guys. If you don't like what they say or want to do, that's your choice to go or find elsewhere. If you think they are tying to just make money off you , don't do what they advise but don't later complain you have pain and can't find a dentist. 80% of people only go to the dentist when they have a problem or think they need treatment when they have pain. The whole point of looking after your teeth is to stop problems starting and regular check ups find them early to stop them getting worse and fix them BEFORE they start causing problems. Many people don't understand that logic. Imagine if people had the same attitude with cancer. They or a GP find a lump or a problem in a test but because you have no debilitating or painful symptoms, you fob it off until its literally killing you or too far gone to treat without life changing treatment. Dentists don't just make your teeth look nice and sort pain out, they are real people and can recognise many other things you might not be aware of. We have spotted oral cancer and other issues when patients have told us their other social and medical problems and found connections to ask their GP about. I am a dental nurse and personally have spotted and help find 3 cases of cancer in patients out of 20 we have reffered just to check with a 2 week referral. We have helped kids in foster care learn how to look after their teeth, helped people smile again and helped perfect their smile enough to have their photos taken at their wedding. No one likes to have stuff done at the dentist but they are not their to be mean, they are there to help. They exist for a reason. I'm sorry you hate me the moment you meet me because of where I work.
