Most of the time your find they’re plastered. Newer houses are a mix now between plastered throughout or being dry lined throughout. You can’t tell the difference after it’s painted to be honest with you.

Definitely sounds like it’s been dot and dabbed and the joints have been taped and filled. If it’s dot and dabbed you won’t see any screw holes. From a corner measure 1.2m and have a scratch with a nail of something sharp. It should be like polyfiller. But it may be a cut on one end though

Tape and joint is a very common way of drylining, builders do not need to plaster the whole wall, just the board joints. The preference to plaster (skim) or tape and joint depends on the part of the country you are in.

I thought you’d use plasterboard then skim on top of the whole wall to get one smooth finish? Didn’t realise you could just throw board up and only worry about the joints. My house is from 1930. Plasters an inch thick on every wall.

The board manufacturers produce tapered edge board for tape and jointing and have done for 40 (ish) years. Tape and joint is much quicker than skimming. House builder and DIY friendly sizes of board are available in square edge or tapered edge, commercial sizes generally are only tapered edge. A plasterer can still skim a tapered edge board. The two long edges have recess that is approx 3mm deep and 60mm wide along the edge which tapers to nothing. You run joint compound along the taper, bed a tape (paper or fibre mesh) then go over with a further layer of compound to feather out, before finally building out the joint to the full width.

The boards are feathered edge so they taper. This means you have a space to tape and fill over all the screws and leave a flat continuous board.

Not that I can see :/ they've painted over it but majority of it came off with the wallpaper, honestly cannot see any seams screws or holes. We're so confused it's like just one massive plasterboard the size of my wall

Good tape and joint is indecipherable from skim plaster, most commercial properties will be tape and joint. Tape and fill the joints, spot the screws then sand back flush.

It's annoying peeling the wallpaper for because sometimes the top skin of the board comes with it... can I even paint over that, or do I need to get the boards skimmed?

Nope. My last 1987 build (London) had no plaster. They use feather edge boards (sloped edges not flat) and then tape and fill each joint till it looks seamless. Plaster can feel nice to the touch but this way looks fine to me and in some ways I found it much more serviceable.

Some builders do this on new builds. It looks fine when it’s papered but as soon as the wallpaper is scraped off the walls are knackered and need plastering properly. It’s really just passing the cost of plastering on to the buyers.

My dad told me years ago that plastering the whole wall was the 'English' method and that Scottish builders just plaster the joins.

They don’t on new builds, joints and screws are filled in then sanded back flush, the plasterboard is then painted over. Can’t really tell the difference but the walls are definitely softer than a skimmed wall.

Are they plasterboard walls, if so I know most will just put that up and call it a day or “skim” over even just the joints in boards . If they’re brick walls then I don’t have a clue lmao

Built in the 80's, whole lot is brick as far as I know 😶 they've just painted over it really so we're looking for any gaps/seams between the boards atm

Ah I get u now , yeah it’s not uncommon to not skim a full board but just the joints instead . Just falls down to why waste time and money on the full thing when u don’t need to I think
