Weird how war and CBDC is so low on the polls, Trump said we're gonna be the crypto capital of the world, he didn't say we're gonna be the constitutional money capital of the world, had all the tech bros with him at inauguration, talking about getting rid of pennies and stuff like that. The war? Come on, we've got Israel bullying Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Palestinians, We're bombing Yemen too, we've got the crisis in Sudan, we got Ukraine and Russia, NATO countries gearing up for war and bullying between them and Russia, Germany's defense budget was 88.5 billion last year, India and Pakistan, China still building up their military for a possible Taiwan invasion

So, I have the 'tism, and have a lot of routines that I like to keep. One of these is going to a convivence store and getting a few items. I get 2 energy drinks and a can of zyns on my way to work, and i've been doing this 5 days a week for the last 7 years.
When I first started doing this, my total would be maybe $7-8 dollars. It would go up every few years, but not drastically. Now, the same 2 drinks and a zyn can is close to $20 total. It went up a ton in the last 2 years to the point I dont bother anymore.

I too remember the days when monster was 2.15 and good cigarettes were 12.34 and I thought that was obscene. Now monster is 4.19 at my gas station and all cigarettes in my state are 15. I quit both tbh. I can still get a case of 36 diet cokes for 8 bucks, that'll be sufficient.
BicycleNo69420@reddit
I smoked Marlboro 100s. When I started they were like, $5 and change. I quit when they went over $10/pack and I know people now paying $20. I'm so glad I quit
Gray_Salt@reddit
Oh man, a twelve pack around here is 10-12 bucks.
nw342@reddit
I used to buy offbrand zyns 3 cans of 20 for $3.33. That was the deal 2 years ago, and now they're $8/can.
My theory is that they sold them at a loss until they got enough sales (people addicted) before jacking up the prices.

It's really, really sickening how much politics has been allowed to take over this sub. Not one but two posts right now are full of hate and vitriol, judgement, and the sad thing is when I searched, it's not even true. Why are these posts which are so easily de-bunked allowed to stand? Why are such hateful and non-constructive comments allowed to stand?
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
You should see how bad it is behind the curtain...
solorna@reddit
Okay, please start using automod to help you. Unconstructive comments may lead to removals or bans. Remove with automod. Hand out temp bans and then permanent ones.
I'm unhappy with the political situation also, but manage to express this without screaming motherfucking magat at everyone who posts something I disagree with. Evil Zionists made the power go out! (That is sarcasm.) Posting here should be a privilege and not a right. Off topic comments may be removed. Remove them!
Already I do not recognize hardly any names that have been here for years. That were providing on topic, factual information. I went way back, there are less than a dozen I can find, and usually downvoted to hell despite their sources. They are not showing up in Weekly threads, either, which leads me to believe they have unsubbed like myself and are only stopping occasionally. We are circling the drain here. No one who is going to provide any info worth hearing is gonna do it while screaming abuse at anyone else. Ban.
GuiltyYams@reddit
I hear you on this but you are leaving disinformation up - those weather warning posts are sickening. News sources and users on this sub from KY have confirmed repeatedly that warnings were sent and staff was onsite but the posts providing this false narrative are still up and users here are being straight up abused for providing actual facts. I have to ask why. Why leave up this once you KNOW it is false, you KNOW people are out of control with abuses on that post. Not only did you leave the original one up but approved a second post spreading the same BS. I feel great sympathy for people who are just perusing by and seeing these types of thread titles and just believing it. There is no reason for this to turn into a r.worldnews or r.politics fiasco. I hope this doesn't come across as too harsh and I am keeping in mind that I am not seeing the backend that you are seeing nor do I even want to imagine it. But this is scary.
Neon-Predator@reddit
New sub here, and I literally came here to post this. I'm here for information, not r/politics regurgitation. Mods, do your jobs. If you don't want to, I'd be willing to.

Regarding measles, I just saw this come across my feed from another subreddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ContagionCuriosity/comments/1kp73la/measles_sign_at_chandler_regional_medical_center/
I obviously can't confirm if it's true or not, but it does seem relevant. Regardless of whether/how much you trust the CDC and other public health officials to be pushing out accurate information to the public in a timely manner, a local hospital posting a sign like this in their ER before more widespread warnings start going out is the type of thing that I'd expect to see in an "intel" sub.

Bought a rhubarb plant.

Ok, one thing I would like to say, is about zombies. If they were to come, would the military be prepared? I read through conplan 8888, and they weren't all that prepped...
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
Wasn't the virus supposed to take everyone off guard and be airborn?
Naive_Donkey2639@reddit
No, not all of them.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
Ah, fast or slow zombies?
Naive_Donkey2639@reddit
well, they had plans for both fast, medium, and slow.

Update on the peppermint situation. Still no peppermints in town. There are the shitty no brand, no peppermint, ones that taste exactly like toothpaste but I'm not that desperate.
GuiltyYams@reddit
You are in some weird Stephen King-adjacent town with no peppermints. Because of last week's post (I was the one who checked my local Walmart stock online) I went down the candy aisle yesterday. Plenty of peppermints in bags, the round kind you are wanting plus those not-as-good ones that are kind of globe shaped and melt quicker.
wellblessyourcow@reddit
I am in an extremely small town and the problem is probably something like “single source peppermints all made by same company actually and just wrapped differently” or “small value item no longer earned its space on the truck”
GuiltyYams@reddit
Might try office supply store if you have one.
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
That's weird. Mint is one of the easiest herbs to grow, IMO. I've got tons of it growing around my place and every year there's just a bit more taking over.
HabaneroShits@reddit
I can't explain why your town has no peppermint candy. Checking my local stores it's still in stock along with real peppermint oil in the baking section.
Reading up on peppermint production is nothing but bad news though.
The fungal disease Verticillium wilt infects the roots of plants and can lay dormant for a decade.. Total yield in the US has dropped by 83% since the peak in 1997. The only option is to start new fields free of the fungus which is why peppermint farming has largely moved west over the years. Unfortunately you can't get further west than Oregon and Washington without moving production across the Pacific.
USDA annual peppermint production stats
wellblessyourcow@reddit
My own personal apocalypse. However at the farmers market I did place an order for peppermint candies (three kinds!) with a candy maker. So a win for the community. I guess
splat-y-chila@reddit
You can grow some of your own mints, and it's a downright weed. I bought starter plants from various sellers on Etsy and you wouldn't believe the amount of mints that exist!
kheret@reddit
Because of your prior post I checked the Dollar Tree candy selection at the checkout, and instead of the stuff they used to have like circus peanuts and peppermints they just had “trendy” sour candy.

Prepping question: Some people recommend getting hiking or work books as part of one's preps. Forgive me if these are stupid questions, but (1) in what situation would the boots be necessary and (2) can it be any other type of shoe (e.g. old running shoes)? I mostly live in old running shoes (new ones for running, old ones for general use) and wanted to avoid an overbuy but underuse situation.
Thanks!
splat-y-chila@reddit
You know, I wear my boots around everywhere actually. Winter time: yes, to keep the snow off my ankles. Summer: yes to keep bugs and mud off my feet. Quick trip to the store: yes! Just shove the laces in to make them slip ons. Quick hop out to the garden through the tall grass: yes because they're coated in bugspray so they can keep the ticks off. Have to go into work: yes wear the fancy suede version instead of the polished leather version.
The ones I get don't even need breaking in (Timberlands, if you're looking).
RedditMadeName@reddit
Thank you! They are definitely much more cushioned than the old running shoes.
Astereon@reddit
It's always good to have a pair of boots. Boots are great for every day footwear even of you're not a prepper. They're much better at protecting your feet and giving longer term comfort if you're going to be on your feet a lot.
Running shoes are good but may wear out faster over time compared to boots. Especially boots that are made for hiking or utility. Most are also waterproof which you don't get with running shoes. I like Merrell and Keen boots myself. They're a good balance of quality and affordability (Keen for work or utility boots and Merrell for hiking).
I would suggest a good mid-height boot for general use but many companies also make hiking or utility 'shoes' which have all the features of boots but in the shape and fit of a tennis/running shoe if that's your thing.
RedditMadeName@reddit
Thank you! I'm well stocked on the wool socks and got a pair of boots today.

I don't shop in physical stores all that much, mostly because I've been stocked up for a while, or get things delivered. But today had to kill some time in an open air shopping mall so stopped into a bunch of stores.
In many of the stores, I could personally tell they had removed a few smaller product stands but still looked pretty full, so if you weren't aware you wouldn't notice.
Most of the clothing retail stores had LARGE sections of discount/clearance areas, as if they aren't sending those back to the warehouse, and are instead using that to help fill the store.
The one that shocked me though was a small mom and pop toy store. They have 4 rooms in this store, with the last room being as big as the other 3 rooms combined. And they had 10 store employees moving what little remaind from the last big room, into the main front room to make the store seem fuller (but even that trick wouldn't work, it was sparse). And putting up brown crate paper to block the 3 entrances into the big room with "Employees Only" written on it. The employees at the store were exchanging contact information and talking about how they weren't sure if they'd see each other again since shifts were being cut and "they'd likely be out of a job soon."
