The world has lost faith in america as a global leader.
People in Korea didn't even know stuff like January sixth, they don't know that he ignores supreme court orders, or doge, or Medicaid, or any of that stuff.
But everyone, everyone knows about the tarrifs stuff.
tariffs arenât some penalty china paysâtheyâre a tax on americans who buy imported goods. if the u.s. slaps a tariff on chinese products, itâs u.s. buyers who end up footing the bill through higher prices. itâs economic nationalism dressed up to look like punishment, but it lands on american wallets. itâs a tax for the little guy.
Due to souring relations with the States, now America's foreign clients are being incentivised to start investing more in trades with other ckuntries instead
You know, like with China or Canada or even Europe...
And sure, trump can claim "good riddance we don't need them anyway" but in like 50 years once those international markets shift to exclude the States its going to come back to bite the country in the ass because the US's main global leverage is its trade
He will be dead in 20 years anyway. I don't think it really matters to him if he goes down as the best or worst president in history, as long as people are still talking about him 200 years from now.
I think the biggest unforeseen factor is that breaking from the status quo is very expensive. Countries will not usually opt for it willingly, and this has been a major factor in keeping everyone in line with existing US systems of trade and defence. Brexit is one example, and while I disagree with the very principle of it, a huge part of the problem was just the disruption.
Canada would probably like to reduce dependence on the US, but building infrastructure to export LNG by ship would have been a huge waste of money. Now itâs a completely viable project and will still be there after Trump if they build it.
Europe has been happy to spend 2% ish on military for the past decades, with a large chunk of this going to US companies, and military policy being essentially just US-led. Breaking from this to establish another system would have been very dangerous. Now itâs a complete necessity and will still be there after Trump.
Since Trump came into power, right wing populist parties around the Western world have been struggling in the polls. So I guess the one silver lining from this is that idiots from other countries at least took the USA as a warning and changed their minds lol.
I think it's more those who don't support right wing populism saw what was going on and became more motivated to get out and prevent it from gaining more influence.
The overall numbers show that right wing populism is still rising in support and the rhetoric has not changed yet and doesn't show signs of changing in the near term either.
How big was the shift in popular vote away from the right?
In Canada (where I'm from). The right wing party here gained vote share but a pretty substantial amount, and like my post said more people voted to stem the rise of the right it didn't take away from the support on the right, just from other center and more left leaning parties.
And the rhetoric from the right hasn't changed here either, has it changed where you are?
Last election the PVV got 37 out of 150 seats and became the biggest party. They rose to 49 seats in the polls last year, but now they are down to 28. A lot his former voters are also openly saying they are disappointed in the party for not delivering on any of their promisses.
Our system is very different from Canada, which means we have way more parties. That means disatisfied/protest voters have a lot of options to choose from, and are s lot less loyal to the far-right parties.
Geert Wilder's rhetoric has only intensified, but that is working against him now. Especially his far-right foreign policy stances (anti-ukraine, pro-israel, pro-Trump) have proven to be very unpopular, as the focus of the national discourse is moving away from immigration and towards defence and geopolitics.
Of course the die hard far-right types will keep voting for him, but the "normies" seem to be walking away from this party and this ideology en masse.
Ahh, yes your political rhetoric swung to the right quiet hard at least a decade ago, mainly from Syrian refugees iirc. Here in Canada we didn't experience as hard of a shift then, in fact elected one of the most culturally left leaders we've ever had which, accompanied by rhetoric from South of the border emboldened our right wing parties and fringe groups.
One can also point to Germany and the rise of AfD as another example supporting my position however.

turns out being a technology and service based economy is much better than being manufacturing based when there are now tons of factories and cheap workers in Asia.
No, that's when the US started being the world's most powerful nation. Before that, it had merely the largest economy. The US economy overtook britain around 1890-1900.
Overtook the economy of the British Isles? Yes. Overtook the economy of the Empire? Not really. The main reason for the overtake in the 40s was decolonial efforts and European bankruptcy from the war, not really from anything special the US was doing
Enjoy your new manufacturing jobs, Americans! Pay is 0.79$ and the workweek is 6am til 8pm for 6 days a week. When (not if) you get hurt thanks to the hazardous working conditions, you will ne fired without compensation and immediately replaced.
These were the jobs you were so angry at the Bangladeshi's and Chinese for taking from you, right?
Unfortunately american wages are extremely high so it would be extremely costly to manufacture donestically. So much so that unless tariffs were astronomical to the point if economic ruin it wouldnt be worth it
This, is something sold for 10$ is made in china in 1 hour paying 0.1$ the worker (made up number) + shipping cost + tariff.
How much is it going to cost in USA if the worker producing the good is going to be paid 8$?
Rocked the boat and gained nothing for it but making all of our closest allies annoyed and threatening our very good deals for cheaper raw materials. Glorious commandant does it again.
Trump caused Australia to have the largest labour (left) election win in recent history mainly due to a fear of "Trumpism" infecting our government. Similar thing happened in Canada and Germany.
Trump has given the world a great example of exactly what not to do.
Nah, I'd be more likely to believe Musk's dumb ass played 4D chess to get conservatives to buy electric cars than believe Sleepy Don was pulling reverse psychology.
Fotzenfritz is anything but left. Sure, not a completely insane lunatic like the republicans, but the CxU is still highly conservative, while the SPD just kinda goes along with them for now. Now sure, the Left Party did rise to a respectable 8,8%, but it's hard to tell, how much of this is thanks to Trump - he was only in office for a month before the german elections, though his usual, uhm, politics, might have played a part. Not like he was quiet about his plans before.
It's only until recently that I realized democracy is not in fact a sure thing. I was under the impression that star wars type emperor Palpatine shit would never happen in my lifetime.
I now realize that democracy really is something that you have to fight to protect.
When my president (korean) was impeached i was like "is this really a big deal? Because it's called martial law, but really it's just declaring emergency powers which is what Trump does all the time. Probably fine, let's not rock the boat"
Now I realize you need to nip that shit in the bud straight away, and that i was wrong.
(Fun fact: no, no they are not. Sure, AfD has more numbers, but they're still only like 20% and literally nobody wants to work with them. The one time the regular conservatives talked about it, their own people rebelled against them.)
Germany, but it's not all a change. The CDU/CSU have been (essentially) at power for decades. It's just that the extremist party is also growing increasingly stronger.
The biggest losers were the social democrats and liberals, then the greens.
Canada was actually a heavy loss for the conservatives though AFAIK.
Most MAGA folks are dirt poor redneck farmers whoâve been screwed the hardest by the very GOP policies they cheer for. Trump loves the "poorly educated" and itâs not a compliment. Their lives are anything but easy, and instead of demanding better, they been working hard on dragging everyone else down with them
I cannot comprehend the hate for immigrants. I beleive most of the hate co.es from people who don't live in areas with actually high numbers of immigrants like south Florida. The vast majority of them are just regular people.
If it's anything like in my country, it's probably even people from smaller towns that experience very little foreigners, but got influenced by the fear mongering on social media.
It's just like anon/4chan, isn't it? The guys who've never felt the touch of pussy wanting to explain how ~~women~~ females work, since they discuss it all day every day with their equally incel bros on a saharan pearl-diving forum.
While that's an exaggeration, Trump is more popular among poor people than rich people.
Maybe he's also popular with billionaires, but there's not enough of those to actually matter in terms of votes. Your average person earning 200k is less likely to support Trump than your average person earning 50k.
Maybe he's also popular with billionaires, but there's not enough of those to actually matter in terms of votes.
Their personal, singular votes might not matter ... but the amount of influence they bring on board (cough cough, donations) absolutely do matter in terms of total votes.
I concur. Where I live, MAGA run the gamut between farmers, retired folks, wage slaves and straight up unemployed. The only connecting factor is that they're pissed at something in life and Trump gives them a reason to spread their pain to everyone else while making them feel like heroes.
Case in point, at my shitty gas station wagie job I encountered a man who was very well off by our town's standards who said that tariffs made it so poor people had incentive to go get "more jobs" in place of "illegals" who were stealing all of it. Another man, whom I know for a fact is a fellow wage slave at Wal-Mart and consistently complains about not being paid enough, agreed and said that if more Americans worked like he did the country would run fine.
There is no connecting factor in being stupid, everyone is stupid in some aspect. It is a connecting factor to fucking hate your fellow man because you're miserable and it feels like no one else is.
You'd be living in fear 24/7. That's why they voted for him in the first place. They watch Fox or Newsmax constantly, and the only way those networks can keep them engaged is by terrifying them. It would be an awful life to live.
I saw a skeet that was like "In exchange for absolutely nothing from China, America has agreed to take the gun off of its own head, but will continue aiming at its foot instead" or something and I laughed so hard and then I felt sad
What happened to no tax on tips and Canada as a 51st state? Can you give a straight answer and not a typical trumpanzee whataboutism? Dude clearly reversed his stupid tariffs for what gain exactly?
"we literally don't have to buy their shit" given how there's practically nobody else that can produce said shit, you quite literally in fact DO have to buy their shit.
Sure, we could decouple from China. But how about we try not to do it quite literally overnight, in the process shocking global financial markets, which in turn affects consumer sentiment, which in turn affects spending, which leads to a recession, which leads to loss of jobs, which leads to a worse life for 95% of people
Biden talked a lot during his terms about constantly talking with Xi Jingping. If you want an example of them actually walking around together, there's a story about them at the Filoli Estate that comes up commonly. And Biden claimed that he'd "traveled 17,000 miles" with Xi Jinping, especially around Tibet. Which, seeing as Tibet is under authoritarian rule by China that plays fast and loose with the Tibetans' human rights, seems disturbing to me.
It was frequent, though, during his terms that I'd see a speech or address of his and he'd bring up spending a lot of time with Xi Jinping. Long talks, long walks, etc, etc. Xi Jinping referred to Biden as "my old friend", which, despite Biden('s advisors/handlers) denying it, seems like a likely-true description.
I mean, if you supported the Biden administration and want to run purposeful interference for it, sure, that response makes sense.
Any degree of desire to see both sides would likely facilitate one to remember how often Biden publicly spoke fondly of spending time with Xi, despite the PR condemnations.
I'm not even American, don't care about your geriatric homes escapees you call presidents, but it's always funny to see belligerent opinated claims without source or actual backing.
The 17,000 miles one? The claim itself is false, yes, but Biden did claim it, and that's what I'm talking about. He believed it, assumedly, that he spent that much time with Xi Jinping and happily said so.
Also, there are more sites fact-checking it, but that first result is also Fox News, so good luck marketing them as trustworthy on Reddit. Again, the validity of the claim itself wasn't my concern.
Investing in critical industries to build up how? How would they have been price competitive without leeching off taxpayer money... forever? How would they be able to compete in the market place? What stops China from dumping and predatory pricing? The US is simply unable to compete with China and build up its own manufacturing base without protectonism to prevent the massive cost advantages China has from ruining any nascent attempt at building up industry. Trump was a pussy and folded.
Well, by critical industries I meant mainly the CHIPS act which tried to bring some semiconductor manufacturing into US, and as stated, that I think is the best way.
If you brought something that China makes into US with tandem tarriffs, you could encourage domestic consumption of said produce, thus strenghtening that industry and ensuring its growth. What stops China from dumping could be the fact China is a capitalist country and as such its industries are privatized. Could they pressure the company to fuck with US by dumping? Yeah, but so far they havent played that card
Whether you like it or not capitalism relies on exploitation. If you in your "developed country" want to have a middle-class that can afford commodities the chain must be profitable so somebody must work for cheap. If you detach from the countries who do the exploitation (most of them in Asia and some in the center and south of Africa) for you that somebody becomes yourself. We are all hypocrites for allowing a system like this but let's at least acknowledge it.
So shouldn't everyone opposed to this system of exploitation be in favour of the tariffs? Or are they too busy being upset about having a markup on their slave labour temu shit?
See, the system is crooked in a way where to be opposed to the system you must educate yourself and to educate yourself you have to be an active part of it (buying clothes, a phone...). This process goes on to numb your opposition to said system. So in short, no they don't have to be either in favour or against the tariffs to be opposed to the system and yes we are all too busy upset about our AliExpress package delivery.
I'm a volunteer firefighter and most firefighters are Trump supporters. They are genuinely beyond parody they will say the exact same things that people make jokes about, and they will just repeat themselves with zero self awareness when you call them out.
I actually think that Trump is some kind of cognitohazard because I don't want to call these people morons but anytime we talk politics at all.....well.
How do people not understand that the United States is never going to be the industrial powerhouse it once was, because that America was very much a byproduct of the Industrial Revolution and as we developed further we transitioned to a service economy. China is basically having the peak of their revolution right now, that's why they're able to mass produce so much. The idea that we can somehow kickstart industry in the states again is foolish for many reasons, most of all that it's simply cheaper to use the existing industrial economies then try to force the U.S to regress back into a similar economy.
For those tempted by rightwing right, there is no direction except back. They are taught never to consider that the future could be bright because the entirety of their philosophy is that change is bad because their lives have gotten worse as they age, so obviously we have to go back to their childhood when things were good. It's infantile and pathetic
They're so close in some ways to seeing the bigger picture, but they get caught up in a delusional view of a past that never existed. They identify the problems but fail to understand their cause or how to solve them. There are things from the past of the nation that should be preserved, but often these things are the ones right wingers want to tear out from root to stem. In their pursuit of the mirage on the horizon they abandon the oasis they had. They don't want to preserve anything, tradition doesn't matter, it's only a mask used by those grasping for power to placate the disillusioned and hopeless until they can cast it aside. We've seen it before, and we're seeing it again now.
By destroying relationships with our closest allies, engaging in insider trading and market manipulation, causing interruptions to vital supply chains, costing American families thousands by making inflation worse, and of course exempting Russia. Outta here with this bullshit.
America right now is like that kid in high school who is a complete dick to all his friends because his friends are weak and have no backbone to stand up for themselves.
Except our âfriendsâ are actually strong, independent individuals and arenât afraid of cutting ties with a toxic person.

Tarrifs is the tax that China collects from its citizens when they import.
Do you understand that China lowering their tarrifs (i assume that's true, idk) does not mean that America got more money?
Do you think the incentivization for import by lower tarrifs will upset the amount of trade America has lost?
LeoDaWeeb@reddit
In theory though, doesn't lower tarrifs mean the Chinese would be willing to import more stuff from the US, thus making more money?

Nothing. US has never been the world's 2nd most suitable destination for manufacturers, so people continued to move from China to southeast Asia.

No, that's when the US started being the world's most powerful nation. Before that, it had merely the largest economy. The US economy overtook britain around 1890-1900.
ZenPyx@reddit
Overtook the economy of the British Isles? Yes. Overtook the economy of the Empire? Not really. The main reason for the overtake in the 40s was decolonial efforts and European bankruptcy from the war, not really from anything special the US was doing

Poopy-Mcgee@reddit

Sure, we could decouple from China. Past_Idea@reddit

Acronym_0@reddit
The way Biden was doing it
Investing in critical industries to build up.
Granted, Chinas main leverage are the rare earth metals, that one is hard to solve
Mitchel-256@reddit
You mean Joe "I love taking long walks with and giving loving handjobs to my best friend, Xi Jinping" Biden?
Acronym_0@reddit
I know I sound ignorant, but what actions did he take to earn that nickname?
Mitchel-256@reddit
GabMassa@reddit
Source: Trust me bro
Mitchel-256@reddit
I mean, if you supported the Biden administration and want to run purposeful interference for it, sure, that response makes sense.
Any degree of desire to see both sides would likely facilitate one to remember how often Biden publicly spoke fondly of spending time with Xi, despite the PR condemnations.
GabMassa@reddit
You didn't even post an article or anything.
I'm not even American, don't care about your geriatric homes escapees you call presidents, but it's always funny to see belligerent opinated claims without source or actual backing.
Mitchel-256@reddit
That's why I pointed out specific items that'll get you hits from a simple Google search. Because that's all it takes.
If you took the ten seconds it takes to search "Biden Jinping Filoli Estate" or "Biden 17,000 miles", you'd have your questions answered.
But belligerence is what matters to you, so I don't think that's actually what you wanted to do. You just relished the opportunity to act smarmy.
GabMassa@reddit

HobbitousMaximus@reddit
Literally the first result says it's false.
Mitchel-256@reddit
The 17,000 miles one? The claim itself is false, yes, but Biden did claim it, and that's what I'm talking about. He believed it, assumedly, that he spent that much time with Xi Jinping and happily said so.
Also, there are more sites fact-checking it, but that first result is also Fox News, so good luck marketing them as trustworthy on Reddit. Again, the validity of the claim itself wasn't my concern.
xinorez1@reddit

Past_Idea@reddit
Investing in critical industries to build up how? How would they have been price competitive without leeching off taxpayer money... forever? How would they be able to compete in the market place? What stops China from dumping and predatory pricing? The US is simply unable to compete with China and build up its own manufacturing base without protectonism to prevent the massive cost advantages China has from ruining any nascent attempt at building up industry. Trump was a pussy and folded.
Acronym_0@reddit
Well, by critical industries I meant mainly the CHIPS act which tried to bring some semiconductor manufacturing into US, and as stated, that I think is the best way.
If you brought something that China makes into US with tandem tarriffs, you could encourage domestic consumption of said produce, thus strenghtening that industry and ensuring its growth. What stops China from dumping could be the fact China is a capitalist country and as such its industries are privatized. Could they pressure the company to fuck with US by dumping? Yeah, but so far they havent played that card
fuukingai@reddit
You're brain rotted on propaganda and it's showing
Weeb_twat@reddit
But you're not reliant on Israel though, quite the opposite in fact...
Actual-Team-4222@reddit
Whether you like it or not capitalism relies on exploitation. If you in your "developed country" want to have a middle-class that can afford commodities the chain must be profitable so somebody must work for cheap. If you detach from the countries who do the exploitation (most of them in Asia and some in the center and south of Africa) for you that somebody becomes yourself. We are all hypocrites for allowing a system like this but let's at least acknowledge it.
gbmaulin@reddit
So shouldn't everyone opposed to this system of exploitation be in favour of the tariffs? Or are they too busy being upset about having a markup on their slave labour temu shit?
Actual-Team-4222@reddit
See, the system is crooked in a way where to be opposed to the system you must educate yourself and to educate yourself you have to be an active part of it (buying clothes, a phone...). This process goes on to numb your opposition to said system. So in short, no they don't have to be either in favour or against the tariffs to be opposed to the system and yes we are all too busy upset about our AliExpress package delivery.

WickedMagician@reddit
For those tempted by rightwing right, there is no direction except back. BitMixKit@reddit
