In your opinion what's the best song?
Posted by WavishingWickWude@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 146 comments
I saw this on private social media tonight and I was interested. I guess it's basically whats the one song that you could present to the world and most people would agree its a great song. The only criteria would be that if you played it to the world, the least amount of people would disagree. Almost everybody would think it was a well written song about things we could all agree on.
VeniceBtich@reddit
Probably something by led zeppelin, I can't decide which.
Iwantedalbino@reddit
Well it’s not Tenacious D - Tribute.
Dougie Maclean - Caledonia would be my nomination but I think that ticks the latter of your last two sentences more than the former.
colinah87@reddit
Caledonia just turns me into a bubblin mess. Being Scottish and not having not lived in Scotland for 15 years now it gets to me more and more every time I hear it
Iwantedalbino@reddit
I first started really listening to it on the way to the hospital to pick my wife and baby up. We’re similarly displaced and I was a shambles by the time I got to the hospital.
dpr60@reddit
The long and winding road…don’t leave me standing here
Either that or America…’Kathy I’m lost’ I said, though I knew she was sleeping
Fit_Definition1412@reddit
Something inside so strong - Labi Siffre
Morganx27@reddit
To go for a slightly more obscure pick, I'd say To Shoot Another Day by Rosalie Cunningham. She's criminally underrated, very 60s/70s style.
ImNotThatJudgemental@reddit
I think this might be an impossible task. I don’t think you’d get enough majority consensus worldwide for one song to come out on top. Suggestions on here are, unsurprisingly, English language songs with western tonal values however, there are billions of non English speakers in the world who would not consider these songs greater than a song from their own culture.
Even within a western sphere, there isn’t consensus. I performed a cursory search of the best French songs of all time and non of the songs commented here came up.
It is also dependent on what you want from ‘the best’ song. Is it more important for the song to sound uplifting or do the lyrics need to resonate with the listener.
Perhaps a better way to look at this is if an intelligent alien came to Earth and asked for one example of what music means to us, what one song would you present?
Even then, I still don’t think we could do it. I for one don’t know enough about other cultures music to even begin to approach this and I suspect I’m not alone.
Just for fun though I’ll put my two pence in and say: Ne Me Quitte Pas by Jacques Brel.

Placebo - Drag
lemorgan@reddit
Did not expect to see this on this list.
What a fucking banger!
Herne_KZN@reddit
Ode to Joy (which I’m counting as a song since it has vocals in the 4th movement)
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark (specifically the live recording from Rio)
The Highwaymen - Highwayman
The Kills - Future Starts Slow
Joy Division - New Dawn Fades
Queen - Who Wants to Live Forever
Souxie & the Banshees - Cities in Dust
NIN - Dead Souls

Pump up the Jam by the Belgian band, Technotronic.
tobotic@reddit
Interestingly, Pump Up The Jam by the Belgian band Technotronic has a tempo of exactly 125 beats per minute, the same speed as a cat's heartbeat at rest, which is why it was chosen as the Canadian national anthem.
South_Leek_5730@reddit
Technotronic got their name by combining the word 'techno', meaning a sort of dance music, and 'tronic' meaning 'tronic', the original 12-inch release of Pump Up The Jam came with a free horse.
DaysyFields@reddit
Bohemian Rhapsody
tobotic@reddit
Bohemian Rhapsody isn't a song. It's a whole playlist in a trench coat.
WavishingWickWude@reddit (OP)
Always great, but doesn't make you feel anything on an emotional level.
Willing-Confusion-56@reddit
Wut?
atomic_mermaid@reddit
That literally wasn't part of your criteria.
secret_willy@reddit
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Africa - Toto
Yesterday- The Beatles
And that’s coming from someone who listens to mostly soul and R&B. BR is a masterpiece in every single way. The production on Africa is perfection and Yesterday is just simply a beautiful piece of music.
I know they seem like common choices, but they’re common choices for a reason.
flyingokapis@reddit
Mr. Jones - Counting Crows
tobotic@reddit
That's not even the best song on its own album.
Round Here is. Fight me.
flyingokapis@reddit
Fight you over an opinion?
Nah, I'm good.
Enough-Ad3818@reddit
Excellent choice
bowak@reddit
If playing to the whole world then presumably it'd be something like a classic song from a 70s or 80s Bollywood movie that I've never heard of!
I'd like to pick Faithless - Insomnia, but suspect it's a relatively narrow age range that really love it.
So I think I'll go with Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer as it has to be one of the most widely known songs that people will spontaneously sing song to and we've all been down on our luck at some point.
Crookfur@reddit
You'd be surprised. My Dad (in his mid 70s now) who mostly despised most techno, rap and any pop post 1985 absolutely loved Faithless and not just because of thier outstanding sets at Glastonbury. Something about thier stuff just clicked with him.
bowak@reddit
Excellent - I hope I can remain as open to new music now I'm about the age your dad would have been when Insomnia came out.
WavishingWickWude@reddit (OP)
For reference, the general agreement was that God Only Knows by the Beach Boys and Mr Blue Sky by ELO was close to the top. I don't know what the top would be, the thought is overwhelming. Maybe In My Life by the Beatles?
EyesOpen111@reddit
I bet you are from UK! Me too!! I love ELO! Mr. Blue sky, All over the world, Last train to London etc. 👍
tobotic@reddit
What are the chances of meeting someone else from the UK in r/AskUK? Must be one in a million!!
West_Yorkshire@reddit
You can't really pick a best song. Music invokes emotions and "best" isn't an emotion.
Uplifting? Happy/Sad/Beautiful? Sorrowful? Those are good descriptors for songs.
MoonmoonMamman@reddit
Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw one of those reaction videos where they get the village elders from the arse end of Afghanistan to react to western media and they played it for them and they all seemed to like it and think it was good (they were also pleasantly surprised to hear ‘Bismillah!’) So it definitely has universal appeal.
tobotic@reddit
I happen to have a Spotify playlist specifically of my answers to this sort of question. Not the songs I like the most myself, but songs I wouldn't be surprised to hear had won a survey of most popular song. The playlist is, in no particular order:
Yes, two of those songs are covers.
There's no Beatles (but John Lennon solo), no Rolling Stones, no Oasis or Blur, no Bob Dylan (but Watchtower is there), no Michael Jackson. Many of those would be in contention for the greatest band or artist, but this is just based on single songs.
alwaysribs@reddit
Going home (local hero) - mark knopfler.
Bum-Sniffer@reddit
Some of the answers in this thread are laughable lol. I know music is subjective but there are some really niche genres in here that is anything most would dislike.
I’d probably go with She Loves You by the Beatles or something. They aren’t my favourite band but are universally enjoyed

Confident - Justin Bieber
WavishingWickWude@reddit (OP)
Is this a real answer?
Ok_Strength_3937@reddit
Why wouldn’t it be?
WavishingWickWude@reddit (OP)
Because it was a Justin Bieber song. Of all the hundreds of thousands of songs, there's no way it's a Justin Bieber song. God love you, I hope you're ok forever but it's definitely not Bieber.
bowak@reddit
You didn't ask people to pick their favourite though, your criteria were the song most people would agree on.
Willing-Confusion-56@reddit
It was ops opinion, which you asked for. Don't be submissive of someone's choice.
GloriaIsNotMyName@reddit
I mean you did ask people, "in your opinion" you can't tell someone off for doing that, which is the point of an opinion. I don't like Justin much either, but I'm not gonna tell other people to do the same
_djh2@reddit
Damn you all old
bowak@reddit
How can you tell? Bearing in mind that OP asked for the song that most people in the world would agree on, so not necessarily the song each person would pick for themselves.
Spunkallthemoney@reddit
Talking heads this must be the place
Tootskinfloot@reddit
Good Riddance by Green Day. It's such a short, sweet, and timeless song. I don't think I've met somebody who says they don't love it.
bowak@reddit
If this same question was asked in 20 years or so this would be my choice - but even then, there are vast swathes of people who won't know any Green Day, even though they should.
Blackintosh@reddit
Motley Crue - Kickstart my Heart.
It has long served as my motivation song.

bowak@reddit
If I remember correctly the Guardian gave the Shatner-Ben Folds album 0 & 5 stars as it broke criticism.
Baconated-grapefruit@reddit
I came here to say this. It's unironically superior in every respect.
WavishingWickWude@reddit (OP)
Love it. And also Mile End and Help the Aged. All wonderful.
trcr3600@reddit
Mile End is class. Very underplayed and underated.

Living On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
Not the best musically but any big event i’ve been to where it’s been played over the PA peeps can’t help but sing along.

I despise this song. But one reason is that everyone loses their minds when it’s played even though it’s trash.

The Odyssey, by Symphony X. Sure, it's 24 minutes long, but reaching the end feels like a genuine accomplishment.
Ok-Train5382@reddit
If the most people like it, it’s probably just the most inoffensive song. I wouldn’t consider this the best.
Maleficent-Arugula40@reddit
Bittersweet Symphony
ed-uk@reddit
Twinkle twinkle little star. Great little melody, feels from all the verses, just timeless and beautiful.
Enough-Ad3818@reddit
Enjoyment of music is subjective.
My opinion of the best song is "Came Out Swinging" by The Wonder Years, or "Backroads" by Lonely The Brave.
watchyam8@reddit
Best is subjective. Music means something to one person, nothing to another.
I’m in my 50’s and a very happy memory is listening to an old “reel to reel” tape deck with my late father. He liked ‘The Shadows’ so I nominate ‘foot tapper’ - one listen and I’m there. Happy. Means sod all to others and feel free to mock its hokey nature or lack of coolness.
But -to me- it’s the best. Cheers, Dad.

Drunk_Cartographer@reddit
lol. Give me your opinions but my opinion is best and I need to tell everyone what I think.
Scarred_fish@reddit
Too many criteria that can sway things but two top the list by far.
Imagine - John Lennons best performance both as writer and musician, captures the spirit of humanity and hope perfectly.
Bohemian Rhapsody- Queens masterpiece is an explosion of emotion, andbody wo isn't affected by it must be pretty much dead. So powerful both musically and lyrically.
Alive_Ice7937@reddit
Crazy - Gnarles Barkley
txfuib@reddit
My heart will go on - Celine Dion
MidnightRambler87@reddit
I’m sorry but I have to respectfully disagree and say it’s a god awful song.
sihasihasi@reddit
I wasn't that keen on it, and then we had a holiday in Cyprus, and the bar in our hotel had a cassette of Celine bloody Dion, and simply played it on a loop. I definitely hate the song after that.
MidnightRambler87@reddit
If you wanted to associate a song with the word dirge, this is it.
InevitablePerfect762@reddit
Personally it's not even my favourite by The Killers, but I would have maybe said Mr Brightside, everyone still goes crazy when that song plays.
_a_nice_egg_@reddit
