Do I need to worry, possible burglary attempt?

We’ve just had two young boys knock the door at 23:15 and say their phone is in our home and had been tracked to our address, then they said it was at number 5 which is next door to us and that they’d knocked next door who said it was with us. Next door are a very elderly couple who I can’t see would have answered at this time of night as we don’t live in the nicest of areas. This feels like a scam or something but I can’t figure it out?? The boys were probably no more than 15. We’ve got 2 cars in the drive right now but during the week it’s only me home alone as my partner works away during the week so usually only 1 car here.
ItsUs-YouKnow-Us@reddit
I had this before. A known burglar knocked on my door saying he thought someone called Robert lived there. I told him that I knew he was a burglar and that if so much as a pot plant goes missing from my garden, I would pay his elderly mother a visit.
BobbieMcFee@reddit
Rob McUtlery?
VillagerN9@reddit
We had something similar to this happen before when someone knocked on our door at 10pm. My Dad didn't open the door but asked "who is it?" The guy didn't say who he was and just straight up asked "does Slav live here?'" Couldn't really see him because it was dark and our door has patterned glass but we could see he had his hood up. My Dad just said no and the guy just stood there and said "oh." I piped up at this point and said "you got the wrong address" and he just walked off. I ran to the front window to see who it was and the guy who knocked on our door kept his hood up and gets into a waiting black BMW. It looked like him and the driver had some words and the driver had an irritated look on his face. Then he swiftly drives off.
Now it could have been a genuine mistake on their part or if they were checking to see if the house was empty. It didn't help that they acted so weird about it. Either way I'm glad we didn't open the door
janquadrentvincent@reddit
Look see I feel shady saying this but I have been the person knocking on a door at an absurd point of the night. I needed scissors to cut some cable ties that were cutting into a friend's wrists and getting tighter. I will always be grateful they 1) answered 2) believed me 3) helped me. Sometimes there is a genuine need or a mistake. Sometimes not though.
PowerApp101@reddit
Always a black BMW.

Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
Sorry, your story is that you threatened an old woman?
ItsUs-YouKnow-Us@reddit
Nope. I threatened a burglar.
Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
You threatened their elderly mother.
ItsUs-YouKnow-Us@reddit
She never knew I existed. She was not threatened.
Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
You threatened to attack an old woman. Whether she heard you is irrelevant.
ItsUs-YouKnow-Us@reddit
No it isn’t.
Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
It's pretty pathetic.
If you're really going to act like a hard man rather than going to the police then threaten the actual perp, not his mum.
-Absofuckinglutely-@reddit
You watch Made in Chelsea. You don't get to have an opinion.
gremilym@reddit
Damn, that wallaby is depreciating fast.
Difficult-Level-3070@reddit
Perp likely doesn't care about threats to his person. Threats to his mother, for the random person he chose that acts like he knows his mother, are far more likely to stick
CollThom@reddit
Possibly he knows where the mother lives but not where the actual burglar lives? Which the burglar would have known and understood? As for threatening, I didn’t see anyone get threatened other than the burglar, who also got warned that their address could be found out from the mother, and then a visit would be getting paid to the actual burglar, where the person whose comment you were replying to could then “act like a hard man” to the burglar himself. But then that’s just what I inferred. We clearly look at the world differently though.
I am curious to know what your response would’ve been in that situation though?
ItsUs-YouKnow-Us@reddit
Ugh 🙄
AnSteall@reddit
You phrased this better than I could. 🤣
PipalaShone@reddit
"HELLO MR ROBBER WITH TOOLS, I'M GONNA GET YOU!" Or "I know your mum, I'll tell her if you rob me"
Hideious@reddit
I'd say the same thing but wouldn't ever hurt a fly. It gives them a shock of reality because there are people who absolutely will attack their family for their actions, they need to realise that is a possible consequence and its a matter of time before they encounter a lunatic.
One of my friends lost his elderly nan in the most brutal way (I can't say how because it would dox him) because his uncle was a theif and stole from a lunatic drug dealer. It's heartbreaking and has left such trauma on his family. This was years ago but it pops into my mind often it's so fucking tragic.
finbar_the_wonderdog@reddit
He did not threaten to attack her, he threatened to visit her. It coul merely to inform her that her son is up to no good again
Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
Then why didn't he say that when I asked instead of saying it was fine because she wasn't there?
Ecstatic_Record4738@reddit
Because it's implied
It's assumed people will have at least some intelligence on here. Wrongly though as you have proven
LordLuciferVI@reddit
Ah, because of the ‘implication’

West_Guarantee284@reddit
They threatened to tell his mother on him is how I read it. So many grown men are still shit scared of the wrath of their mothers.
TheUndeadBake@reddit
I think it's more like "I will tattle tale on you"
Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
Well they've repeatedly not said that and even said it was fine because she wasn't there. So no, I don't think that's what they were meaning at all.
finbar_the_wonderdog@reddit
Or maybe they were joyfully winding you up whilst you dug yourself a bigger hole by getting ever more dramatic
Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
God I hope not, because that would be the driest, most low effort windup ever. I'd feel cheated.
Can I ask you why, when there are two meanings to what they said and they've implied that I was right with my assumption, you're so determined that they meant the other meaning and I'm in the wrong here?
PipalaShone@reddit
No one implied anything. Everyone else but you inferred that they would tell on the robbers to their mum. You inferred that it meant a violent attack on an older person. Says more about you, pal.
Mr_DnD@reddit
Omg thank you, I could not have said it more concisely than this.
finbar_the_wonderdog@reddit
Can I ask where you are from?
It seems fairly obvious to me, from the UK, that he was goading you. Regardless if your suggestion is correct he did not threaten an old woman it was (potentially) a veiled threat to a man about his mother. slightly different, but enough to give him an opening to have some fun. And then you made it worse for yourself my changing the story from a (direct) threat to threatening to attack. Then you try to use the fact that he has defended himself (because he was too busy winding you up) as a justification that you must be correct.
Then finally you do the classic " well if was a wind up i am not bothered and it wasnt funny"
Yes of course there are two meaning to what he said. thats the whole point of a veiled threat.
And truth be told the op admitted he was threatening the burglar. But you took it upon yourself to say what the threat was (whis was never disclosed) and at no point did they either threaten the mother or threaten to attack her. Thats the only reason why you are in the wrong here!
May the OP should come back and clear it all up for everyone?
ItsUs-YouKnow-Us@reddit
You’ve hit the nail on the head mate. I saw this little internet super hero was assuming all over the place and thought I’d let her roll with it.
Whether the burglar thought I meant I’d have a chat with his mother, revenge burgle his mother or go psycho on her didn’t really concern me. Never in a month of Sundays would I do anything towards an innocent old lady. But he didn’t need to know that. He just knew in that instant that I knew who his mother was when I said “Perry, I know you’ve just gotten out for burglary. If so much as a plant disappears from my garden, I shall be round to see Sylvia first thing”
I should add, this elderly old lady this internet clairvoyant is so concerned with… she was nastier than her son. (She’s dead now) She used to terrorise the neighbourhood back in the day. Including putting a nail in all four tyres of my car, just because I dared to tell her grandson to stop kicking his ball against it. She put a paving slab through the Indian restaurant window because they were closing up as she attempted to go in. She and all four of her sons took turns in going to prison. I think the police bought their Christmas party forward when she died.
I hope this explanation lets this vigilante sleep better tonight. Sorry that my “Low effort” wind up has cost them so many downvotes.
swallowyoursadness@reddit
Is there a high effort way to wind people up? If you're making an effort to wind someone up then you're wound up yourself. Low effort is peak wind up tactics..
Street_County7108@reddit

Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit

JimmyJonJackson420@reddit
They have several times your just being obtuse. Not once did he say I’m gonna go punch the shit out of your mother but you so desperately want him to mean that and he doesn’t, so what now?
your_mum_made_me_cum@reddit
The correct interpretation of the message has been explained to you several times over at this point. You can pretend it didn't happen, but it definitely did. It is impossible to read to this point in the reply chain without seeing it.
PipalaShone@reddit
No one implied anything. Everyone else but you inferred that they would tell on the robbers to their mum. You inferred that it meant a violent attack on an older person. Says more about you, pal.
jasovanooo@reddit
it doesn't matter what you think.

RainbowPenguin1000@reddit
Can’t believe you’re getting obliterated with downvotes for this reaction.
IHeardOnAPodcast@reddit
Staggering ignorance or getting the complete wrong end of the stick does usually get obliterated by downvotes, so I can.
Silly-Fox-9421@reddit
I'll pay your elderly mother a visit is definitely a threat of violence lol. Whether or not he actually would is one thing, but anyone in the real world would take that as a violent threat.
Mr_DnD@reddit
No. It's veiled and not even implicit. Rather "your mum will know what you've done" is the MUCH more common interpretation.
The benefit of it being ambiguous though, is that since it could mean violence, the thief might think "could this person be a violent lunatic and should I proceed to rob him".
IHeardOnAPodcast@reddit
No, it's a threat of "I'll go and tell your mother what a naughty boy you've been". The only potential violence here is what she'll do to her son when she hears.
dontgoatsemebro@reddit
Why is the "elderly" in there then? That only serves to convey frailty.
Ch1pp@reddit
To imply he actually knew who the mother was.
dontgoatsemebro@reddit
Disagree, and also how would you feel if I paid your elderly mother a visit?
Ch1pp@reddit
Nah, you're welcome to. My mum would fuck you up and take no prisoners.
IHeardOnAPodcast@reddit
I agree, but I would also doubt OP actually said the word elderly.
dontgoatsemebro@reddit
Maybe we should go pay his elderly mother a visit.
Geeky_Monkey@reddit
Have you never had a bollocking from an old lady? They are vicious!
corobo@reddit
Aye I get arrested every time I tell my sister I'm going to visit my mum
Big_JR80@reddit
Is comprehension a skill that has eluded you?
OP has made no threat to an old lady at all. They threatened the thief that if they steal something, they would pay the grandmother a visit. They didn't specify for what purpose, but I'm sure most of here probably inferred that the purpose was to INFORM grandmother of said thief's actions, not physically assault her.
Seriously, what is wrong with you?
minecraftmedic@reddit
Threatened her with a good time.
Maybe OP is going to pay her a visit for some Netflix and chill?
smay1989@reddit
Dont feel too sorry for her, she spawned a crackhead theiving son

puddinandpi@reddit
No I mean himself! He was announcing that he was there to rob you
Reedie_91@reddit
I wouldn't go to reddit about this, if you worried and it's happening this late why not call the police?
Skipster_McPeebles@reddit
There was a brawl outside our local last night (about 7pm). It spread across the busy road outside and involved about 10 people.
After trying to stop it, the landlady phoned the police - the operator said they could hear it going on.
The police just didn't bother to come.
Two nights before there had been an allegation of "anti semitism" because someone had tied yellow ribbons around lamp posts near the local synagogue. 2 officers and a van attended within 5 minutes of someone calling about it. Blue lights, the lot.
The police don't give a shit.
gagagagaNope@reddit
I know right, those pesky jews don't need protection from the millions of raging anti-semites in this country at the moment.
Which includes you, it seems.
Skipster_McPeebles@reddit
So wait, I'm an anti semite now?
On what basis do you make this claim?
gagagagaNope@reddit
For a start you chose that particular example as worthless policing. You wrote it as 'anti-semitism' suggesting it doesn't exist.
This casual dismissal or distain of it has been growing for years, and is now so widespread it's not even called out now most of the time.
It's endemic on the left now right across the west.
Icy_Place_5785@reddit
Does it?
Frostodian@reddit
You realise the police might have been busy when there was a fight on and not for the anti semitism which would obviously make them available?
Skipster_McPeebles@reddit
No, I hadn't thought of that.
Raunien@reddit
The only symbolism around the yellow ribbon that I can find that's even tangentially related to Judaism is in a pro-Israel context, specially hoping for the release of prisoners held by Hamas. Given that supporting Israel isn't commonly viewed as antisemitic, either there's a very recently developed use of the yellow ribbon that I haven't been made aware of or the caller got the complete wrong end of the stick.
Skipster_McPeebles@reddit
I don't know much about it myself. I thought it was from the Vietnam war. Either way, the police were there in numbers almost immediately.
My guess is that they have targets about "hate crime", but not about drunken punch-ups which won't even get to the crime statistics.
SojournerInThisVale@reddit
Yep. About 10 year ago I saw a big punch up outside a pub. Called the police. The operator said ‘yeah, we’re watching it’
stubbledchin@reddit
Report on non emergency line now or to your neighborhood team. They won't do anything but if other people are reporting similar incidents it may spark an investigation.
Rossobianchi99@reddit
Cos the police won’t upvote the post and they won’t get karma?
Kindly_Pause_389@reddit
What does karma actually do, though ? I have shed loads, but it doesn't make the slightest difference as far as I can tell ?
HardLemonz@reddit
you call that shed loads? it means i’m way better than you
Kindly_Pause_389@reddit
I have no idea how much better you are than me. Maybe you can use your vastly superior knowledge to answer the question then ? What is karma actually for? What does it do? Why do I have what i now understand to be a miniscule amount of it ? How did I get it in the first place ? How do I get more? Do I need more? I have so many questions... so much to learn ..
Buddy-Matt@reddit
3 things:
Some subs have a minimum karma requirement before you can post. As a very basic, low effort, protection against bots I believe.
In theory it's a bit of a "social standing" metric. Over time people who contribute more to conversations and conversation starting, and don't troll or perform other undesirable actions will amass more karma, so you can check their profile and get a feel fitter the sort of person you're dealing with. Afaik nobody does this
Then in the context of posts/comments themselves, upvoting/downvoting, in theory, helps promote and hide good and bad content. The social nature means it's a broken system though as 1) were an easily led species, and experiments have shown that this depends almost as much on which direction the first few votes go as the content (even subs who hide scores for X time, you can spot a diwnvoted comment as it starts collapsed) and 2) people don't always up/downvote in a way the promotes good/original content as much as it promotes memes, the same in jokes, and outrage for whatever the topic of the day is.
Kindly_Pause_389@reddit
Thank you for this. It's the answer that makes everything make sense.
HardLemonz@reddit
I have way more karma therefore I’m way better than you. Sorry kiddo
Kindly_Pause_389@reddit
Kiddo ? Ha ha...I'm very much an 'oldie', but thanks, I'll take that 🤣
stinglikeameg@reddit
The only time it's ever been important for me is when I was new to Reddit and wanted to post in a specific sub, but they deleted the post because I didn't have enough karma. I assume it's to protect against bots or something?
Other than that I've yet to find a use for it, but am happy to be enlightened.
Kindly_Pause_389@reddit
Thank you - I've often wondered, just never thought to ask before.
ResponsibleDemand341@reddit
For me, if a post seems botty or AI I'll check post history/karma to make sure it's not just karma farming nonsense and actually deserves a response, or if I'm intrigued by a reply on a post i'll sometimes check their profile to get a sense of the person somewhat, other than that yeah it's arbitrary.
Kindly_Pause_389@reddit
Ahh..that's a useful tip, thanks

Hello Dave
Unusual_residue@reddit
I am worried that OP had to post this on Reddit. There must be a friend, family member or other responsible adult that they can speak to in real life.
That aside, call 101 if particularly concerned.
Ninja008866@reddit (OP)
I do appreciate the concern but I posted this on our Nextdoor app and I thought I’d post here to see if anyone is aware of a known scam or if this is a known start to an attempted burglary or something. Noted. I wouldn't necessarily class Nextdoor as real life but you may now have the advice you seek.

Update: I posted this on the Nextdoor app as well and the mother of the boys messaged to apologise for scaring me but it is genuine. Our garden backs on to a park so I can only assume the phone is in the park and our house is the nearest the tracking app could get to. Thanks all though!

I have no idea if this is a scam. But i did track my phone to someone's house. I went there and got it back. (Nightmare of a day)
desertterminator@reddit
Please tell us more. How did you manage to misplace your phone in someone else's house? Reverse thievery?
Rumhampolicy@reddit
I was on a night out. I somehow lost my phone (hmm, out of my handbag). I was actually away and stayed in a hotel, so I didn't know the area. Anyway, the next day. I needed to find my phone. I walked to the pubs I'd been in, etc. Then I went to Cex and bought the cheapest tablet, sat in a pub, and had to do lots of updates. Eventually, I managed to get it set up and connected to the Internet. I sat there for a few hours trying to track the phone. Eventually, it popped up. I had to write the road name down. I then took the tablet back to Cex for a refund.
So, I went back to the hotel to see if they would print a map for me. (They did). I drove to the address. It was a bit of a dodgy looking area. I went to the door, the person who opened it was someone I was actually talking to at the bar. They were quite freaked out that I had found them. We exchanged a few grumpy words, and then someone came down the stairs with my phone.
I then cried all the way home 😂 the adrenaline got me through the day.
I'd only had the phone for a month, and I was determined to get it back.
PowerApp101@reddit
That 48 hour no questions asked refund that Cex do is priceless!

Wow, very much a First World Lord of the Rings story, an epic adventure as far as epic adventures go these days.
Well done though, if that was me I'd of accepted it as lost the moment it wasn't on me. That said, I normally insure expensive stuff like that so a quick phone call a week's wait would've solved things for me.

Maybe scouting for empty houses, or attempting to force their way in if it's old/single people.
electricshock88@reddit
This may be a distraction burglary. One or two to the front door, get homeowners and occupiers attention. Third goes over the fence at the back and in through the back door and grabs anything in sight and runs off before you know what’s happening.
Keep your doors locked people, no matter how nice the area you live in is

shakesfistatmoon@reddit
While you're off looking for whatever they nip in and take stuff. Or they are checking out the number of people in the property.
The thing is, the excuse is always pretty unlikely because they are thick as mince:
We recently had, two lads saying they'd just bought their mum a candle for her birthday and did we have a lighter or matches they could buy. I just shouted fuck off and shut the door.
It was past 11pm in a quiet road, before knocking they'd been loudly talking and laughing with two girls, one of the girls shouted for them not to do it because they lived around here. I could hear them planning!
desertterminator@reddit
This is what happens when you stop making good video games. Back in my day we were too busy calling each other racial slurs in Halo and making threats that definitely would have warranted a police response in the world of today. Those were enlightened times I tell you.
Now all these kids have got is a bunch of cartoony safe nonsense where they can’t vent.
/s added because I don’t trust any of you to work it out for yourselves
Littlelindsey@reddit
Trying to gain access to your property either to rob you there and then or see what you have that’s worth coming back for on a later date
Emergency_Mistake_44@reddit
Literally that. Scouting to see how many doors there are, where the car keys are left near the front door, anything valuable on display.
Apprehensive_Plum755@reddit
We had this, young lad said he'd been robbed and he could see that his phone was "in our house". I got him to use the Google 'find my phone' feature , which causes it to ring quite loud, and it was in a bush and 10 yards away - the robbers must have given up getting in to it and tossed it
ChillCommissar@reddit
It's a scam rolling across the country atm.
It's a shame for anyone looking for a phone, but it's also a "leave a newspaper outside someone's house and see if anyone removes it" type of plan.
powpow198@reddit
This is a scam. Happening all over.
withnailstail123@reddit
No idea why you’re being downvoted, it’s literally happening everywhere and absolutely a concern.
swallowyoursadness@reddit
I think because a scam is a bit different to teens casing houses for burglars. It's just a burglary with a little planning involved, not a scam
bareneth@reddit
What is the scam? What are they achieving by doing this? Why would they show their face and make themselves known to the homeowners if they were intending to burgle somewhere
withnailstail123@reddit
It’s not the face to face kids, it’s the twats behind / round the corner that are casing our houses . It’s very much “a thing” .
swallowyoursadness@reddit
Do you have visible security cameras and a security light at the front and back of your property? Might be worth installing some if you are worried. It might give you some peace of mind and will definitely act as a deterrent
withnailstail123@reddit
We’ve had the same in our village , but with AirPods .
They really don’t like dogs, and they really don’t like their pictures being taken .. just saying …
misterala@reddit
The default response to every question on here seems to be "yeah, that's 100% a scam."
I don't believe this is. Phone tracking software isn't completely accurate, and there's a good chance it's pointing to you rather than where the handset really is (likely nearby).
pajamakitten@reddit
Of course it is a scam. There is no reason for them to knock that late when they 'know' their phone is at that address, they are just checking to see if people are in.
Derries_bluestack@reddit
They probably wanted to see where you leave the car keys and what kind of locks are on your front door.
Be careful. Put your keys in a Faraday pouch away from the door and get extra security. Maybe consider gates and a fence on your drive for the future.
Shinathen@reddit
This sounds stupid, but what were they wearing. You can pretty much tell more or less what crowd someone is in by what they are wearing. Also brand logos help a lot
Far_Examination8254@reddit
They just needed the police with them to the tracked location . If they agreed to that then we would know if sus or not.
bareneth@reddit
It's probably someone who has had their phone stolen and it has tracked to your location but the person who had the phone was either moving or the tracking isn't accurate.
If someone were to burgle your house I don't think they would knock on your door and ask if you had their phone. They would just watch your house and then break in when you're gone. There is no incentive to provide you with a clear shot of their faces.
Valuable-Wallaby-167@reddit
Good chance they wouldn't be the ones doing the burglary.
Knocking on doors to check if someone is in is pretty normal before burglaries.

Most likely, a tiktok/insta trend

I have actually had this and it was real. I lived next to a van and equipment rental place, the guy had left his phone in one of the vans. I really thought at first it was shady though.

If you've got time to consider posting on reddit...nahh

Saw something very similar on Facebook a while back.... It resulted in a phone being found, double bagged, on top of a garage roof at the back of said property...
The only difference being it was a female who knocked and then a male approached and confronted the home owner and accused thief.
A strange story at the time on our local Facebook community, but now very suspicious to have a similar read here.

Most obvious reason would be to check if there was anyone in.

I wouldn't worry but I'm a man and I'm an idiot I'd report it to 101 and just keep shit locked just to be safe
