One of our worst fashion trends that I totally embraced.

Growing up in Dallas, we had argyle socks and penny loafers with this culottes and little house on the prairie blouse. I now laugh at how dumb we looked.
nytropy@reddit
This wasn’t a thing where I lived but I do love those pants! And socks. And the colour scheme. Would wear.
Cool-Group-9471@reddit
Was into minor frill tops but never knickers. Remember Bay City Rollers

That was really a fun show.
babygotbooksandback@reddit
It was at the time. I just bought the first season on dvd to share with my teen son. It does not hold up very well. They also don’t have the original beginning with the song “my life” by Billy Joel. It was super disappointing to not have the capsule voiceover of what the show is about to that song for the intro.

We called them knickers, and I fell prey to this disaster as well!

Thank you! Knickers! Yes! I couldn’t remember the word and it was making me crazy.

The picture you used for this post made me think of Rivals, which came out on Hulu last year

Knickerbockers was the full name.

Culottes for the revolutionaries in the sub!
im_busy_right_now@reddit
Culottes didn’t have cuffs. We called them gauchos. I loved them so much. This is so embarrassing.
beerandmastiffs@reddit
I had a denim pair with bright lime green stitching and I thought I was the shit when I wore them😂
LevelPerception4@reddit
I remember wearing gauchos in the late 70s as a separate trend from knickers in the early 80s, which I didn’t own. In 4th grade, I was all about those tiered miniskirts with the matching sweatshirt. Mine were blue and white striped.

My fondest wish in grade 6 was to own knickers. My mom wouldn’t do it, but I managed to get my dad to the mall and he caved. I also had one of those frilly shirts on for my grade 7 photo.
procrastinatorsuprem@reddit
We called them gauchos.
RMW91-@reddit
We had gauchos, too - but those were a more flow-y leg, knickers had tight ends like the ones in the pic
pipeuptopipedown@reddit
News flash, those are back. Maybe not quite the same shape as the 1980s version, but I see loose, skirt-like, more or less knee-length pants all over the place these days. (I'm not in the US though)
RoguePlanet2@reddit
Loved mine!! Even got a perm at my mother's hair salon.....and my hair is naturally curly if I don't blow it dry 🫣 That could've been me on the left with the blouse on the right 🤭
ChumbawumbaFan01@reddit
I grew up in south Dallas and we called them knickerbockers.
This was when men dressed in booty shorts and crop jerseys and girls dressed like the British were coming.
alr12345678@reddit
I have some wool tweed ones. They were sharp!
Tinawebmom@reddit
I'm not insane!!!!
I literally just had to explain to my son (34) when I asked for a pair of knickers and he handed me chonies!
I thought I was crazy!
RMW91-@reddit
You are not insane!
Well, you might be, I don’t know you personally, because why were you asking for knickers in this century
Tinawebmom@reddit
I wear them still (ok I buy pants that go mid calf and they shrink to just below my knees. Knickers!!)
Brave-Spring2091@reddit
my knickers were fuschia pink corduroy and I had a floral, quilted jacket I wore with them. I thought it was a stunning outfit in 9th grade 🤣
Kind_Pea1576@reddit
Me too! I had a purple velvet pair with gold trim and a matching vest! I cringe when I picture my NYE outfit….1981 I think….
RMW91-@reddit
I had pink velvet with matching suspenders! 🫣
rpfields1@reddit
OMG, I loved this look and the whole New Romantic thing back then. So glad there were no smart phones and cameras back then.
kckitty71@reddit
I spent 4th grade wearing knickers that my mother made me. I liked to wear them with my penny loafers and monogrammed sweaters.
LolaAucoin@reddit
I had two pairs. One were red and one were black and they were both corduroy.
TinkerMelle@reddit
My mom made mine too. They were black velvet.
RMW91-@reddit
We probably looked alike, and I’m both sad and thankful that I don’t have pics!
MishmoshMishmosh@reddit
I had a pair of knickers too.
JinxyMagee@reddit
Such a rough look. I can’t even blame my mom. I begged for them. All my knickers were corduroy or velvet. There was also a velvet bolero thrown into the mix that matched my neck bow. I was also sporting bangs.
My dad would call me Little Lord Fauntleroy. He wasn’t wrong.
Front-Newspaper-1847@reddit
I wanted a pair so badly! My mom, whose fashion taste is not notable, would not allow it.
Fun_Independent_7529@reddit
Me too, me too. All the cool girls had them, and it was middle school, so not going with the trends was death.
RMW91-@reddit
Your mom made a wise choice IMO
snarkmeister99@reddit
9 yr old me had a fabulous pair of burgundy corduroy knickers. That whole late 70s/early 80s era was just fucking tragic for fashion.
No_Couth_1177@reddit
I wore mine several times a week!
scarybottom@reddit
IDK- I was still a kid, and my grandma made me the knickers. I thought it was cute. I would never be caught dead once I hit Jr High, but elementary school me thought it was cute.
Friendly-Channel-480@reddit
It’s the whole look that’s so frightening. The knickers aren’t so bad…
Ok_Ordinary6694@reddit

Ah, the New Romantic era of the early 80s. It was glam rock meets the Romantic era. The 80s were a fun time. The New Romantic era did give rise to some great music though, especially in England - Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode, Human League etc.

Corduroy and mauve. They were actually awesome. And I had a mauve boat-neck knight top to go with them.

Yeah, I really don't get the embarrassment in the rest of the comments, this is a GREAT look. I'm an "elder" millenial ('86) and a bit of a fashion nerd. citygirldc@reddit
Bring back knickers! I can’t think of any other fad that died so definitive a death. They have never come back in any form. Culottes returned in the gauchos of the early 2000s, but knickers have not been seen outside historical costuming.

Oh jeez..me too. That was my junior year in a nutshell. When I wasn't trying to impress some stoner friends in straight legs, a concert shirt with my boyfriends unbuttoned flannel over it. I just bought a pair of loose-ish linen pants with a waistline very reminiscent of Z. Cavariccis...with the blouse pegged legs...that is a different time but a look I never thought I would revisit again. Don't you all just live how Gen A and Z are eating up our old styles and making them their own? Makes me feel a bit old but I am thrilled to see it. GenX50PlusF@reddit
I feel like post pandemic 2022 till now has been giving “if you’re going to be seen in public, *be SEEN in public” vibes with the retro 30-40 years ago fashion merchandise online and in stores where you can try this shit on in a dressing room and perhaps have a salesperson from outside the dressing room door asking how you feel about this outfit you just tried on. And you might ask them to get you another top, bottom, or both in this size to see if you like the outfit better when it’s slightly more comfortable because it fits better.
Today, I predominantly order my not sixth grade but still interested in “looking my best” clothes online at however old I am, try them on in the privacy of my own home, look in the mirror, model them for my spouse, and if I like them and they fit, I keep them and hopefully wear them. If not, I repackage them and return them by taking the package 📦 to the USPS, UPS or FedEx and get a refund or the same item in a larger or smaller size or a refund. 🙏
yardini@reddit
Pre covid I had a cute (to me) style (and an in-office job) and fun coworkers so I always had a decent outfit on. Now I work from home and my previous style is looking a little dated, so it’s been tough to find the “new” me. I guess for me, this decade is going a little more somber style-wise, so for now I’m wearing mostly dark band tshirts with wide-leg dark pants, a bright narrow cardigan, and coordinating colorful shoes.
Like you, I usually buy online but also sometimes thrift. My splurges are usually shoes or boots.
Not having to leave the house for work means I am almost always in comfy clothes during the day. Definitely not a recipe for feeling cute!
GenX50PlusF@reddit
You need occasions to leave the house for that. Or more people at your house than usual. A special occasion besides day to day mundane puttering inside your home.
yardini@reddit
I’ve been trying a bit more lately, at least when I leave the house! All my coworkers work from home too so we are all in hoodies and mom buns on our work calls.
GenX50PlusF@reddit
I guess that’s why I prefer a minimal commute to do business in person. Those work at home Zooms or whatever always make me a little more self conscious than I would like.

Not the pseudo-Edwardian treatment.😂😂😂 I remember those big ass Bertha collars that were on everything. My mom loved them, I felt like a baby because the collar looked like a damn bib. I was in the 3rd grade in 1982, but my mom made me wear them 😂
Overall_Lobster823@reddit
Did we call those gaucho pants?
I never had any, but my senior photo was the turquoise version of the silly top on the right.
yarn_slinger@reddit
Gauchos have wide legs, no cuffs
GenX50PlusF@reddit
I’m still not sure if gauchos and culottes are the same thing (and if not, what’s the difference?) and I’ve never thought to look it up until this memory got unlocked.
GenX50PlusF@reddit
I think of what these models are wearing as what they were calling knickers (as outerwear, not Victorian and Edwardian era underwear for ladies) not culottes which were basically knee length bell bottoms and more 78-79 for me in second grade. With a tight-fitting shirt and maybe even Dynakids boots which I felt super cool in even if a hater called me out that I “got them from Kmart.”
Lawyermama70@reddit
Omg my sister made me lean in the "1900s newsboy" look with the stupid knickers, a little cap and everything 😆😆
TheNolaCatLady@reddit
Ewwwwww! I was in 4th grade, so luckily I was not parading around like that.
CircadianRhythmSect@reddit
Straight off the starship, Littlehouse

Everyone on the thread is saying Adam and the Ants, but since this is Dallas early 80s should it not be Berlin?
They take my breath away.
AMGRN@reddit
Knickers!!!
saktii23@reddit
No way, I love this look. I totally rocked it in the 5th grade.
412_15101@reddit
I was in 5th grade 81-82. Didn’t Rick these at all. Guess it helped I was short so they were just floods for me 🤣
KitschyCatOwens@reddit
Thankfully when I was this stylish, I was 7 or 8 and my teenage sister was to blame.
whatevertoad@reddit
I'm just grateful I was in elementary school when this was a trend. I can't imagine an adult wearing this.
DowagerSpy1920@reddit
Ashamed to say I felt very grown up in mine. There’s a picture of me wearing a pair of burgundy satin ones at Christmas, and I’m holding a massive champagne glass to my lips.
Just normal 12 year old stuff, right?
GenX50PlusF@reddit
It was the culottes I felt grown up in. Not the knickers. But that’s just me. Or is it? lol
PerfectLie2980@reddit
My sister owned the plaid shirt (or its knock off) and happened to have a similar haircut to that model too. Only hers was edgier.
My sister had the coolest style back then.
Myfreakinglyfe@reddit
I’m going through my mom’s house as I’m selling it soon. I found this EXACT pattern in her sewing room last week. These were for me. They were awful!!!
sanctimoniousmods_FU@reddit
Mick Jagger and David Bowie?

I absolutely wore that those blouses, but I’m pretty sure I paired them with purple velvety jeans.

upjumpthebougie@reddit
I miss my maroon plaid puffy blouse. 😭 I never liked the culottes, though.
lysistrata3000@reddit
I had the ruffled shirts, but I never wore the knickers.

There was the swatch watch, and some kind of swapping clothing for women, but never this; I was in Dallas

TangerineInitial9382@reddit
I had almost that exact same plaid blouse with two sets of ruffles. I wore it for picture day in both 3rd AND 4th grade.

Judgy-Introvert@reddit
I remember those god awful shirts, but I don’t recall anyone wearing those knickers.
GenX50PlusF@reddit
I never knew those pieces came in their sizes!
As a sixth grader, I was dying to be out of the “children’s department” and into the “junior department.”
But I had no idea whether high school girls were wearing this let alone Cagney and Lacey, lol.
I would cross the bridge of later 80s fashion when I came to it in high school. But this was super stylish in 1982 for a sixth grader. We’re talking serious badassery. Even if it did come from Little Folks Shop. Looks a little weird on grown women in retrospect tbh.
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
I remember those god awful shirts, but I don’t recall anyone wearing knicker style bottoms.
ContessaChaos@reddit
People, these are not culottes. They are knickers. You could fit five people in one culottes leg.
Shirabatyona32@reddit
In the movie Annie, Annie wore them and I had to have a pair,my grandma made them for me
free-toe-pie@reddit
I was born in 82. I never once saw a family member wearing these pants around 1982. Many women were wearing shirts like those in the pics. Those were popular in my baby pics. But those pants? I don’t think they were that popular.
Judgy-Introvert@reddit
I was born in 70. The shirts I remember but I don’t recall the pants at all.
kellymig@reddit
I graduated high school in 84 and had a pair. Loved them!
SolarPunkWitch2000@reddit

Significant_Ruin4870@reddit
Oh, heavens. My grandmother used to make me little dresses. I remember (from about1970) a loud brown plaid with a little white Alice collar, and similar ones in pastels for Easter. They were so freaking short.
wakattawakaranai@reddit
I have photos somewhere of pinafores made with flowery cotton with ribbon trim in matching colors. No one has ever looked good in floral plus ribbon, but double-ew on PLAID.
beargirlreads@reddit
My mom bought a sewing pattern for knickers for me and I had several homemade pairs. Some in corduroy.😆

katekohli@reddit
Navy blue corduroys knickers were part uniform for girls at National Music Camp. Still have my tin button i.d. with a rubber-stamp kitten that I wore on my hip with a backwards red v-neck cashmere button-down sweater.
procrastinatorsuprem@reddit

I liked the prairie blouses in theory, but never wore mine. It was fuchsia with a ditsy tan floral and a bow at the neck. My relationship to starchy, ruffly, lacy, or silky clothing is sort of a princess and the pea situation.
No knickers (heh. In the American sense), but I did have a striped culottes and vest set I thought was pretty snazzy.
