Brain is fried - need a movie recommendation
Posted by cricket_bacon@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1545 comments
I have spent the day grading finals and my brain needs a break.
Would love to reconnect with a GenX movie classic to help provide that break.
Can you recommend a movie for me to watch?
jensomniacOG@reddit
Always gonna say Beverly Hills Cop.
mjaymkay@reddit
How you doin’? Would you come here for a second please?
jensomniacOG@reddit
Hi. Do you have a match?
mjaymkay@reddit
This fella gave me a match for christsakes!
MerlinsMama13@reddit
Yes!!!!! I have that movie memorized and I still laugh my a$$ off every time I watch it!
ortizzlePDX@reddit
It’s a yearly rewatch
tragicsandwichblogs@reddit
Real Genius
bootlegyukoncorneliu@reddit
My college roommate gave me mushrooms, told me it’s like weed and played a vhs of this movie for me. It fucked me up mentally.
tragicsandwichblogs@reddit
Ouch
ArtichokeDifferent10@reddit
Shit. I was going to say "Heathers", but I have to admit that Real Genius is probably a way better fit for OPs likely mood. 🤣
KaleCatAndMe@reddit
Love Heathers! One of the best.
adambomb_23@reddit
Heathers, though a classic, did not age well. At all.
roysterino@reddit
I like it more now than ever. Also got into the musical as well.

So sad I missed the musical. How was it?

What is it? It's a penis stretcher. Wanna try? NO! 😂😂
djkidna@reddit
Ok let’s take a step back. No, I was wrong, take a step forward. Then a step back, and now we’re doing the cha-cha.
AndyTakeaLittleSnoo@reddit
Will you stop it! I'm serious!
Okay! I'm serious too!
AndyTakeaLittleSnoo@reddit
Let's just take a step back.
No, wait, I'm sorry, take a step forward...
Now, take a step back...
Step forward.
Back.
And then we're cha-cha-ing!
oilfeather@reddit
Find the scene in Ready Player One that has the "toy" in the background.
Thyme2paint@reddit
…Because if I wear it anywhere else it chafes.
ComprehensiveSwim709@reddit
Glad I'm not the only one that still quotes this🤣
Eephusblue@reddit
I quote it all the time and often get blank stares from millennial coworkers. Sad

I just watched this last week. I forgot how good it was.
tragicsandwichblogs@reddit
I would not have expected it to hold up, but it really does.
Pitiful_Night_4373@reddit
Do you ever have a dream where you are naked, surrounded by women in togas, throwing pickles at you?
zallgood2017@reddit
Not to nitpick but I believe the line is, “was it a dream where you were standing on a pyramid in sort of sun-god robes with a 1,000 naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?”
I may have watched this movie A LOT.
RIP Val Kilmer
Pitiful_Night_4373@reddit
I’m sure your correct, I’m old and it’s been a long time. Either way I like the concept it makes me laugh.

Sudden-Violinist-813@reddit
And goes to White Lotus
No-Scarcity-5904@reddit
What’s he doing in our closet?
TheMusicMadeMe@reddit
Fun fact: That was Jon Gries. He played Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite and Greg from The White Lotus.
SharonTate69@reddit
I am hearing these in Val's voice too
Puzzleheaded-Sea8340@reddit
Omg classic. This is what happens to water when it gets too cold. This is Kent. This is what happens when someone becomes too sexually frustrated.
blondeheartedgoddess@reddit
Love this movie. The "popcorn" house was a mockup about 5 minutes from my childhood home. If you notice a blue (I think it was blue?) house to the right side of it, around the corner, actor George Kennedy lived there.
Need to watch it soon.
narcissistssuck@reddit
I think we used too much.

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "I drank what?"

madpolecat@reddit
Holy. Crap.
This was my first thought!
AbeFromanSassageKing@reddit
Whenever I see this masterpiece of a movie mentioned in the wild, I comment how I recently figured out that the actor who plays Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Gries) is the same actor that played Lazlo Hollyfeld in Real Genius. Don't know why that kind of blew my mind, but it did.
Now stop touching yourself, Kent.
tragicsandwichblogs@reddit
I recently figured it out from reading your comment. Wow.
No-Scarcity-5904@reddit
Also one of the rival detectives from Running Scared, with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines, from 1986.

As long as we’re going to”Val Kilmer” how about the earlier and almost forgotten Top Secret — the Airplane! of spy movies.

It was already mentioned when I posted—but I like Real Genius better.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
cricket_bacon@reddit (OP)
Quite a lot of votes for Fast Times.
I did not see this in the theater but watched it just about every time it aired on HBO.
I think I remember watching it once when it aired on broadcast TV. The audio dub in the scene where Mr. Hand shows up to Spicoli's house is hilarious. Spicoli's "art work" on his bedroom walls is all blurred out.
WideStreet7125@reddit
I was Award of the Court, so I partially grew up in foster homes and group homes, and since I wasn't a juvenile delinquent, I could decide where I wanted to be placed; I chose rich suburbs near San Francisco that had high schools such as Ridgemont High.

I keep seeing a lot of different John Cusack films mentioned. Maybe do a mini binge film festival with several of his most iconic Gen X relevant films throughout the weekend. I don’t know how I feel about it, but he seems to be our poster boy. Better Off Dead, Say Anything, Grosse Pointe Blank, Being John Malkovich, High Fidelity (duh)….so forth and so on.
hoitytoitygloves@reddit
Serendipity too
Lower-Yam-620@reddit
I just came out here to post High Fidelity. It’s the ultimate Gen-X rom com
UraTargetMarket@reddit
It is. It’s also insufferable. But that adds to its charm. I’m a woman from Chicago who was somewhat part of that Wicker Park scene before it really became gentrified, so I just want to go throw up watching these men (okay, only Rob…Jack Black is golden….and the Moby guy too), but I also very much appreciate it. 😆To me, the film encapsulates or bookends or whatever the Gen X experience quite nicely. Maybe John Cusack deserves his poster boy status.

Tim Roth, Gary Oldman & Richard Dreyfuss performing Shakespeare… Kinda…
Which-Grapefruit724@reddit
Such a great film, and man are they both in the prime of their beauty!! Gary Oldman is especially breathtaking in this. I'm not the hugest Dreyfuss fan but he's really great in this. The Hamlet bits are done very well, I wish they'd filmed a parallel full Hamlet simultaneously. I love to say "conspiracy of cartographers" at any semblance of an appropriate opportunity, also Times being what they are.
My bff and I acted out and filmed the questions scene for our drama class project, using a volleyball net in the school gym. But these kids were playing basketball in there and you can hear it so clearly it over powers us😂. We also did the iocaine powder scene from Princess Bride and the noise of the traffic going by screwed us over. Amateurs, lol.
FlamingDragonfruit@reddit
They're performing Stoppard, who is a brilliant writer in his own right. (But yes, based on the Hamlet characters)

That’s awesome. It’s my families favorite old movie. My wife and daughter went there for a softball tournament and decided to hit the beach while they were there. They send me a selfie with the rocks off the coast behind them and I texted back “HEY, YOURE AT GOONIE BEACH!” She says. OMG, I AM!! I had no idea! Me: 🤦🏻

Have a funny story about this one.
Enlisted in the army and had arrived at the basic training location and was inprocessing... medical, uniforms, etc.
It is the weekend, so inprocessing shuts down. Those of us who are not done, about fifty, have to stay. Out babysitters are drill sergeants who rotate shifts.
Saturday morning after breakfast they heard us into a small auditorium to show us a movie. The drill sergeant puts Kindergarten Cop in the VCR. Okay.
We go to lunch. New drill sergeant now babysitting. And then back we go to the auditorium. He ejects the tape from the VCR. Says, "Kindergarten Cop? I haven't seen that." Pops the tape back in. Hits play. None of us have the balls to protest.
TLDR - I watched Kindergarten Cop twice in one day.

Little more unknown comedy called Strangers With Candy (2005). It’s so awful but it’s really hilarious about a lady that gets released from prison and decides to go back and finish high school as a 40 something ex-con with actual highschool kids. If you want to laugh over something with a school theme.

How about something ridiculous like Anyway but Loose (take a left, Clyde) or Smokey and The Bandit. Cannonball Run.

Aside from the obvious Brat Pack movies, I'm gonna have to insist you watch Goonies and Labyrinth. But if you're looking for just completely ridiculous dumb 80's humor, I highly recommend Meatballs 2, Caddyshack 2 and Revenge of the Nerds 2. I could not tell you why the 2nd ones are better to me, but they just are.
If you're feeling musical, might I suggest Grease and then Grease 2?
Enjoy your weekend!!
