Why are British people so obsessed with Americans?

Say what you want, there is an obsession, whenever someone says something stupid they ask “are you American”, or the very first country you think of is America, like the whole 100 Brits vs 100 Americans, of course a British person started that
Why is there such a weird obsession? Especially when most Americans aren’t thinking about British people at all, why are British people always trying to get attention from them? It’s strange

What? 😂
Americans are so funny with this kind of thing. Like using the Boston tea party as an insult. Most people here literally do not even know what that is, because we think about America so little.
The only thing which is true is that American influence is everywhere in our lives, on TV etc but otherwise, nobody cares or thinks about it

'we stopped caring about you in 1776...' yeah so did we, we were just on a break from our favourite national past time of beating the French

Who's obsessed with America ?

Calm down. There are many hours in a day, a wee k a month that most Brits don’t think about Americans. It’s an American app with a shitload of Americans on it.

We try to get attention from Americans? What?
I think the question is why are you trying to get attention from us this evening? This is all this thread is. It's Friday night fgs, do something good with your evening. Or have you no buds?
Drewski811@reddit
None of that is true
snowmanseeker@reddit
We're not?

I'm British, my wife is American. We live in the UK. There's a fair few Brits who really are obsessed with the US. Once they hear my wife's accent it's like question time.
AutobotJessa@reddit
There isnt an obsession, Americans, America, aka "Yanks" are easy & reliable punchlines for jokes. This is not a new thing either, its been that way for decades ✌🏻
Simple_Joys@reddit
I have never once in my life heard ‘are you American?’ used as an insult, in any context. Let alone in response to somebody saying something silly or stupid.
TSC-99@reddit
We’re not
Resident-Analysis-12@reddit
couldn't give a toss about americans if i'm honest
The_Nice_Marmot@reddit
I’m not British, but I have no idea what you’re talking about. This sounds like your own personal fantasy.
MarrV@reddit
Are you American in relation to something dumb;
Because there is a stereotype of dumb Americans due to a lot of dumb stuff americans do.
And also it's the closest other country that shares our language, so people think we share a culture. But we don't.

Who put 50p in you?

Says the person commenting on Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande subreddits?
Alarmed-Secretary-39@reddit
We aren't. Americans just make themselves difficult to ignore, like a cancerous mole on your scrotum.
SimpleManc88@reddit
Yawn. Go do something positive with your life.
FudgingEgo@reddit
It's so funny, 99.9% of my work day, America doesn't get mentioned at all.
The .1 is when people take the piss out of Trump.
