first time i went to dubai was done with stairs. first step onto the platform and the heat hit me i honestly tought for a couple seconds the engine was still running and i was just in the exaust blast of the engine. the engine was not on....
My first deployment was to the UAE, and getting off the rotator on an August afternoon was a sweaty wake-up call for sure. When I left 5 months later, I remember it getting "cold" at night after becoming acclimated
pretty sure that anyone above retirement age or with weaker health stepping out of a perfectly AC's plane into that kind of heat would have a good risk of just keeling over down the stairs from the shock.
If that were true, there'd be no old people here in PHX throughout the summer.
But he's in perfect health. The healthiest President we've ever had. A lot of people are saying it. Bihyins and bihyins of people. Doctors too. The best doctors. They said he got the highest score they've ever seen. Maybe even the highest score ever.
Really? If so, that really changes the design of the pneumatic system. How do they test all these modifications? Plus, how does this affect manuals, procedures and things like the panels of the aircraft? It sounds to me like the computer systems with a secondary APU to source electric and pneumatic power would really alter things.
First of all, it’s still US built. Secondly, to have a Presidential jet not built in the US sends an incredibly negative message. Thirdly, what Airbus is going to fit into the requirements needed for AF1? A350 is too small, A380 is wayy too big. 747 fits nicely, and furthermore, is the most iconic airliner ever built.
I was thinking more about things like counters in the software. What if something in there is counting, I don't know, the milliseconds that the computer has been on or something?
Yep that's a valid concern as many airlines are used continuously. Some of them have procedures to do at least one per cycle every few months for this kind of reason.
Doubt it's any different than the bleed and electrical systems from multiple engines. Just another line that will have the same logic as the rest to keep the systems isolated when they need to be.
Yeah, normally heads of state would go down the stairs as they wave, onto red carpet, greeted by dignitaries of whatever country they are visiting. But in a climante like in that part of the world, I wouldn't blame anybody skipping right into terminal building and doing all those formalities indoors.
It's also a private terminal, something which is quite common in the middle east. Usually very swish building with a nice Boulevard leading to it, only used by the Royal Families and their guests
Reminds of when then Dutch PM Mark Rutte made an official visit to Malaysia but using commercial jet instead. Upon arriving, he disembarked via the jet bridge and all the official welcoming formalities were done inside the terminal.
Presidents typically board and disembark from Air Force One either via carpeted air stairs from the L1 door or via a smaller built-in set of stairs below the main deck. At Avgeekery, we’ve never seen Air Force One use a jetway before.
Our search online returned zero photos of such an occurrence before. This makes sense as US president’s aircraft typically park on a military ramp, remote FBO parking spot, or at an isolated ramp at an international airport.
I wonder if that's why it looked odd that the person opening the door was just kinda exposed to the height rather than the usual wait for the jet bridge to get positioned
London Heathrow has a VVIP terminal for heads of state and the royal family as well. Not sure if Air Force One used it or not but other heads of state do.
It appears to be a terminal facility dedicated to the president of the UAE. Judging from Google satellite imagery, it seems the terminal is an ultra-high security zone itself. It's actually surprising that we don't have a setup like this at Andrews so the President doesn't have to be exposed to the elements.
The normal procedure for this kind of arrival is to use air stairs and lay out a little red carpet straight to whatever person they’re meeting or vehicle they’re getting into.
If the president is not on its not Air Force One. But yeah, if its an official government visit, not commercial flight, then usually their counterpart or someome of high or equivalent 'rank' (it depends on who it is and how much we like them) of who ever is visiting shows up to great them at the stairs. People like that pomp and circumstance.
Yes. US Presidents usually use stairs for the photo opportunity (and whomever they are visiting doesn't mind either).
Here, the bridge goes directly into the huge terminal dedicated to the Abu Dhabi royal family, for maximum bling and minimum exposure to the proletariat.
The secret service also likes to keep a perimeter around AF1 for security reasons. I imagine it’s doable next to the terminal but it’s much easier with a big open space between any interloper and the plane.
The Airport literally has a presidential terminal that is used for VIP visitors. The terminal is isolated from the rest of the airport, providing security that would not be possible if connected to the commercial terminal. No other airport in the world has a VIP terminal with jet bridges like this.
Just to keep some of the “terminal” comments down. This is the private Royal family terminal. Not a public one, so there is probably more security there than just using air stairs. I’m willing to bet that jet ridge is armored as well.
I have deployed several times to Al Udeid AB in Qatar during the summer. The KC-135 does not have ground air conditioning. Leaving there, in July/August, crammed in like sardines, all doors closed, waiting for engine start and taxi out then getting to altitude before they can turn on the A/C has got to be the worst cases of time slowing down I have ever experienced in my life.
Try wearing a chem gear suit in that oven! I had to, for training no less! One of the worst experiences I've ever had! Had to fly a sortie with that stuff on. Horrible!
Last time I landen in Abu Dhabi, I was actually feeling cold. The AC was on max. So I sat near the exit so everytime the door opened, a gust of warm air came in.

For the most part, when the president travels he doesn't go through a terminal or anything. Because there's not enough security for that.
Usually, Air Force One will arrive at a remote part of the airport where he can be further away from the general public.
I'm not sure what the set up is at this airport obviously they have some sort of accessible jetway for VIPs that can accommodate security
