This is so true! I get this eerie feeling that a huge chunk of the American population have succumbed to a mass psychosis from watching too much Fox news. Just like when people were dying of COVID and denying they had it with their last breath. Nothing will change their minds, they are past reasoning.
Nailed it. I've been swinging wildly between thinking we have decades and thinking we have a year the past few days. All these people making plans and predictions for twenty years from now as if all will stay the same make me feel crazy, like an alarmist doomer. And I hope that is the case! But there it is again, that funny feeling.
I feel the same, it might be more than a year left but it ain't 25. People are more self absorbed than ever, squabbling about rights and worrying about social worth then actually seeing what actually is happening. I'm not saying people shouldn't be concerned about fair treatment, but that doesn't give you or your kids a future. Forget grandkids, or further generations to come.
I don’t see how talking about rights is self absorbed? Also, advocating for fair treatment under an oppressive government absolutely matters and gives kids a future to look forwards to
It's a different perspective.
We've had about 250 years since the Enlightenment and emergent humanism brought the idea that recognizing individual rights improved the common good, against a backdrop of 6000 years when only elites had any expectation of fair treatment by their peers. Meanwhile, the climate crisis will kill billions, make much of the planet uninhabitable for between 3000 and 100,000 years, depending on the model. To me, that makes climate the far more consequential human issue.
I support recognizing humanity, treating others fairly and with empathy, and am willing to make common cause with anyone willing to support decarbonization. To be fair, though, I'd also make common cause with a Stalin-type monster, if that offered the best prospects for human civilization to survive the next couple of centuries.
I would only make common cause with a Stalin-type “monster” if that offered the best prospects for saving what’s left of the biosphere and at least halting the mass extinction of other species. I suspect humanity will be like cockroaches and persist somehow, if in lesser numbers, however bad shit gets and regardless of whatever system they’re organized under, but will annihilate effectively everything else in doing so.
If we had more fair treatment (see: control over how the government works) we might have actually been able to do something about climate change. Instead the powers that be fed us propaganda and turned us into a population of delusional consumers.
It’s depressing to think about what this country (or modern civilization) *could* have been, and in order to achieve that we would have needed far more equity and justice. Those are still ideals to fight for, even if it might be too late.
I mean...
1. Everyone's opinion: all serious forms of psychological damage such as BPD, narcissism, etc., are incurable, and the person should be left alone (read: just die).
2. Everyone is an armchair psychologist thanks to the internet. Ergo, anyone at any time is psychologically incurable. Also known as "GTFO" at any given second, because.
3. Inflation is... beyond fucking hilarious. "The money needs to last 30 years" is a fucking joke to end all jokes. Good luck with that. Quadruple good luck having any dependents of any kind whatsoever with that.
4. Dependents: "I can't pay for you, get a job." Doing this same pointless vampiric bullshit and worrying about next weeks can of beans.
5. Health care: does not exist. Pay for it, tho.
It's going to end in a few years?
I mean. DON'T YOU HOPE SO??
People are so concerned about fighting fights that for the most part are secondary to what is actually going on. But when you look at all the ones who are more concerned about having their 15 minutes of fame and making it big in the world, making the most money they can, so they can drive 4x4 trucks and Teslas to show how well they are doing. The overall concern is whether there is anyone able to live, be able to have drinking water and food to eat. Following the needs pyramid, we are eating away at the base while putting a lot of stock in the view of self worth.
I know where you're coming from. Striving for a more equal society has always been a most noble cause.
However, I liken our present situation to arguing in the kitchen over who gets the last piece of pizza, while the living room is in flames. We've been witnessing an emerging inferno, as we continue to argue over how the delivery guy is a victim of a corrupt, bigoted system that has let him down while his boss (who inherited everything he has) buys a new Cadillac every year.
What will it matter if no one is able to live, period if we don't address the bigger issues. The more effort you putting into ideas that are not as important takes away the time and energy needed to address the actual fires burning
Easy for me to adopt this line of thinking since I’m a white man with no serious disabilities besides severe depression. Typical libertarian kind of thinking.
Yah, my neighbor was telling me about his retirement plans about how the money needed to last 30 years and I almost burst out with a “30 years?” and a laugh, then I remembered I was in normal society and shouldn’t sound crazy.
My work place invited a pension fund advisor last year. I was very excited to see if his advice took into account looming instability at all. He said this is a great time to invest because markets are depressed and later they'll go back up again, it's always cyclical.
Like theoretically, that's how things usually go I guess, in cycles. Then again, if he acknowledged the issues his job would be redundant and we all gotta pay the bills I suppose.
Condescending works better than ridiculing, so yes, don't laugh. Try a mostly disinterested, but superficially polite "Oh, is that so?", "You don't say?", "Ah, interesting perspective" and so on - basically build a repertoire of sweet nothings - and keep looking at them as if expecting more explanation for an obviously weird idea. It's in the tone, mostly.
Couple of rounds of that and people start to stutter and eventually walk away with the exact opposite of what they were angling for: to have their defence against cognitive dissonance validated. Because that's essentially what's going on there. It's not like you'd need to do much research these days, it's becoming even more blatantly obvious on the daily, how utterly fucked we are at this point, so people engaging you in these conversations desperately want to have the illusion of a future that still allows for such planning mirrored back at them to help them keep believing what they already started to doubt.
It's a variation on the grey rock technique used to keep narcissists at bay. So my thinking was: what works against one distorted view of reality probably will work against others too. And it does.
>It's a variation on the grey rock technique used to keep narcissists at bay.
I feel a little sad when I gray rock a narcissist and watch them prod me for more ego validation. It reveals how weak and vulberable they are, and if you reflect on the sorts of childhoods that give rise to narcissism you can sense the child that never developed within them.
That said - it's pointless to let them know you're sad for them and you still need to nope the Hell away. You're dealing with incurabale damage.
Wow I just learned something. But. This isn't used to convince people but to disengage and escape a narcissist. Well depends on what your objective is.
Yes, by letting the narcissist stew in his distorted view without validation. Basically, it's creating an energy deficiency. The same technique can be applied whenever people are trying to draw energy from interacting with you that gets used to maintain distorted views. When they aren't narcissists, though, the effect is different and weakens the distortion, thereby creating an opening to allow reality to sneak back in. Why? Because unlike those of narcissists', most people's views are social, not individual, constructs that are formed and maintained on that level, so denying validation while keeping up the civil niceties at least somewhat (and with that the social connection) seems like a valid approach.
[The Grey Rock Method also works with internet trolls.](https://psychcentral.com/health/grey-rock-method)
Just respond with "k" and they will lose their goddamned minds over a non-response.
>... then I remembered I was in normal society and shouldn’t sound crazy.
See philosopher and psychologist Steven Bartlett's books [The Pathology of Man: A Study of Human Evil](https://www.bmartin.cc/pubs/Bartlett/Bartlett2005.pdf) and [Normality Does Not Equal Mental Health](https://www.bmartin.cc/pubs/Bartlett/Bartlett2011.pdf) if you want to understand "normal" people.
Also all these people having children all the time - I really don't understand this but I avoid the topic IRL because people are really...I'm searching for the right word but the only thing that comes to my mind is stupid.
Aggressively stupid. They get *mad.*
Some can even understand collapse but will lose their *shit* if you say anything about their [future] children suffering the consequences.
But living also contributes to warming. We want to travel, we want to eat nice food, we want to renovate, we want to take road trips. Just wondering what to take away from all the posts about the inevitable end.
We're now in planetary hospice. The condition is terminal and our time is short. To paraphrase Guy McPherson, keep doing what brings you pleasure and gives meaning to your life. It'll all be over before too long.
I mean we've been doing that since before it started. It's cute how hedonism was always the answer and never, you know, actually trying to do something about the problem.
Who said it was impossible? That's the kind of the entire point. It's a fatalistic doomer mindset.
And hedonism is literally the shrine that society worships. Most of the pleasure (dopamine) that we seek is meaningless.
Yes! In my daily life and most of online, people act like everything is basically normal, they're of course going to live several more decades, no real chance of any kind of catastrophes... And I feel like I'm in an outdoor insane asylum. They're genuinely all delusional. Which is profoundly disorienting.
It depends where you live whether you're being impacted by this catastrophically yet. People jn the periphery of survival are getting hit first.
There are parts of the world that have a little warmer winter and a little hotter summer, but nothing catastrophic yet. These people think they still have decades, the people living in 60c heat believe they have months or years.
In reality as the climate patterns change nobody knows where the new safe climate zones will be and some people will get lucky with a little longer life and some people will get lucky with a blissfully shortened life.
Nobody would take this lying down. Eventually there will be refugee crises on the scale that surpass anything ever caused by warfare, at which point it's going to be evwryone's problem.
This sub is so grounding.
I feel the same way.
To a large degree I have to keep on trucking on. We all do. Evolution designed us to keep going.
But my gut, my soul, call it whatever truly feels its asinine to be planning 20 years out.
I believe in my bones we have no idea what the next 2 decades bring. These changes are coming so fast.
But then on the bad days its like, holy, how much fire can we have at once? How much global drought? How hot can the oceans get? Is something about to break badly now, not in 20 years?
Yep. Pray for me (for what that’s worth) for all these family (in law) gatherings I need to subject myself to for my girlfriend. I have to pretend everything is perfect. Such a goddamn struggle.
Swear to god im gonna pull the doomer card one of these times on them. Maybe this Sunday.. well, fuck calling it a “doomer card” - it’s the “most real card you’ll ever face.. card.”
The bottom left frame gets on my nerves. Yes, it’s always been changing, even without human intervention. But even if we aren’t the cause of the current trajectory (we are), what do you think is going to happen to us if we allow it to continue? Human-caused or natural if we want to survive something has to change.
What they are really saying:
I have to drive a car. how can I get around without a car?? crawl?? What about shopping??/ What about my kids???
If you drive, YOU ARE DESTROYING THE PLANET.
If you eat, you are destroying the planet.
If you heat/cool your house, you are destroying the planet.
If you wear clothes, you are destroying the plant.
So what is the solution?
They said the same thing in Australia in 2019/2020 when literally the entire continent went up in flames. "Land of drought and flooding rains" and all that. The consent-manufacturing machine went into fucking *overdrive* at the time. The reality-denying propaganda is only gonna get worse as the real-world effects take hold. Modern society is a doomsday cult.
I mean all we have to do is look at what happened in the US during the covid pandemic. When climate change, droughts, heat waves super hurricanes etc starts devastating entire countries and regions of the world expect the same responses but infinitely worse behavior and lashing out with violence.
And it will be directed against the left who tried and failed to save these assholes lives and planet of course.
“the world they knew no longer exists”
Sometimes things just hit deep. And this hit me.
That’s really it? It’s completely disorienting to truly acknowledge the entire world view and model someone held for maybe 20/30 years is no longer representative of reality.
I don’t think that’s a feeling too many generations of humans feel.
I suppose thats why they call it time of change.
Simone stole it the Jews the gays the liberals the this the that till only they are left surrounded by like minded cannibals in a hell of our own making.
At what cost? Stop denying that China and India are huge climate problems. No matter how hard any other nation tries they do nearly more damage then the rest of us combined and this needs to be addressed.
>At what cost? Stop denying that China and India are huge climate problems
So what? The US is the biggest emitter and has been for decades. Are we supposed to not do anything unless China and India do too?
Your reply isn't an argument. It's an excuse to do nothing.
Yes but it’ll take everyone cooperating.
India is getting hit by heatwaves and many have no adequate cooling methods. Most of them are vegetarian.
China has more people and would benefit from other large superpowers leading by example rather than leaking denial in the lingua Franca and steaming ahead.
News: “phoenix has seen temperatures over 110°F for a record 20 consecutive days”
Deniers: “it’s summer it’s supposed to be hot out. Our great grandparents survived these summers without air conditioning”
Allow me to direct everyone over to the TOP MINDS commenting in a popular thread in [/r/Conservatives](https://www.reddit.com/r/conservatives/comments/15620lw/its_obvious/) for the last couple of days.
Rarely does one get a chance to see life imitating art so clearly. :)
I'm sorry you're getting downvotes and snark for asking a genuine question. We're all here to share knowledge with one-another, you should be able to seek that knowledge.
Temperature and lack of rain, it is the hottest city in the country (though it’s close with a few others that don’t have the cooler winter temperatures but it beats everyone for the extreme highs) and the fifth lowest amount of rainfall. The lack of rain means that they draw from ground water which is being drawn down at a rate far faster than which it can be replaced. This is a problem in a lot of places because it means that the area can’t actually sustain its population. Ultimately something will have to give.
Great grandparents? I grew up in Phoenix in the 1970s and 1980s. We had occasional days at 120 or over. Not a big deal except they'd close the airport for a bit.
We didn't have A/C in our cars, and it was honestly okay driving around. I don't think most of my friends had car A/C either, it seemed like the car A/Cs didn't really work well for some reason. One year my dad installed a swamp cooler and we almost didn't run the A/C in the house that year.
This isn't ancient history, it was just a few decades ago.
Please try to minimize your energy on gloating that people and groups are still denying. Don’t waste your time or sink down to their level. They don’t matter and will get on board, too late, but stop demeaning yourselves and go about your plans.
too true, a couple years ago the people dying from cold in texas was blamed on solar by the gov there. despite all the contradictory evidence he ran with that excuse lol
These are the people who tried to convince us the Clintons are not human trash, that Obama and Biden aren’t neo-cons. Among other greatest hits of liberal gaslighting.
Ok they're all assholes, but trying to act like the Dems oh its happening, no we will not address it in meaningful ways is not worse. I would rather have a thousand Rubios doing that shit than deal with Obama's jerk me off because I increased Americas oil production but don't fall into nihilism schtick. I can fight enemies that are lying assholes. I can't when damned with allies like that.
The republicans are locking up young girls who get abortions…they’re going full hand maids tail sooo…ya I think we know which poison is worse and yes we can agree that they’re both under regulatory capture by BAU / any major corporation
ok... And the Dems are the ones tasked with the power to fight back and all they do is send fucking fundraising emails. That is why the dems are the worse fucking party. I can deal with the honest evil. The stupid lazy weak willed fucks that are too timid to meet the moment with moral strength but won't get the fuck out of the way, and some how praised for this? All they are doing is making the opponent stronger and the issue bigger.
This is related to a point I make about voting for the lesser evil. People assume this is "better", which is not a fair assumption. Perhaps if we got people 10 times worse than Trump in office there might be an organized response. Perhaps not, but it's a possibility.
The American Government is old tech in any case and is doomed no matter who is elected. There is no fixing it. Empires collapse because their governments couldn't handle the complexity they created. The United States will be the most shining example of this that will ever occur on Earth. The United States is "peak failure".
That makes it worse, I mean MTG is a shithead, I'm not pretending she's being targeted unfairly.. but DEWs are a real thing, but thanks to how she bungled talking about them no one believes that, even though you can just google that shit right now.
True, but I still don't see the Climate Change Admitters as being much better. The vast majority of Admitters don't do more than talk, support rules-for-thee-but-not-for-me, and vote for people they would have voted for anyway. Let some administrative state regulation raise the price of gasoline to European levels, and you'd see how paper thin it all is.
We have to vastly reduce our standard of consumption, which we wrongly call standard of living, to ameliorate the problem. Unfortunately, any government based on the consent of the governed isn't going to do that, because the governed will never consent.
If a system solves nearly every problem but disintegrates under one specific scenario, then it will chug along happily until bad luck throws that one scenario at it. Climate Change is our kryptonite, the key to Democracy's lock.
All we can do is work on ourselves.
Remember the the 'yellow vest' protests a few years back where French motorist lost their shit over Macron increasing the tax on gasoline. The idea being that increasing the cost of fuel would encourage less driving, causing less CO2 emissions. The proles weren't having it though and Macron was forced to scrap the tax.
> We have to vastly reduce our standard of consumption [...] any government based on the consent of the governed isn't going to do that
This is it
This, and a couple of other points, leave me with no hope whatsoever that anything will be done, the others being:
* global warming requires global solutions and therefore international agreement to degrowth, but cheaters will thrive in this scenario
* without fossil fuels, the world simply cannot support so many people, so voluntarily giving up ff use entails voluntary abrupt depopulation.
But what if, against all the odds, we did pull together and act?
* even if we stopped all emissions immediately, we have probably already entered the realm of self sustaining tipping points, so global warming will continue anyway
* even if global warming was curbed, there are countless other symptoms of overshoot causing ecological collapse
There isn't a solution that could be enacted, and if there was, hardly anyone would be willing to enact it, and even if we did, it is too late.
The key conclusion we can make is that any viable solution must be implementable unilaterally with no global cooperation and no oversight.
If we're lucky, it's going to be sun block geoengineering. Most likely, it's just going to be a 99% mortality bioweapon.
The “golden path”, borrowing a metaphor from dune, that leads to a livable future is so fucking narrow and like 99% of people out of the gate can’t be bothered to even try to walk it. That I don’t see any chance.
I think the truth about the way the world is going is to hard to swallow, let alone carry out - Too many useless eaters and consumers in a society that values infinite growth. The other truth is that income and lifestyle inequality are the norm for much of human existence and that the period between 1950-2008 for America was the exception, and made possible by leverage.
The paradigm would need to be absolutely rocked to change the trajectory we are on. In other words, we'd all need to decide we don't value production in South and Southeast Asia, mining for materials that make our electronics, vehicles, and machinery possible, and vastly reduce our consumption of foods which are harmful for the environment. Our population has increased 260% since 1960. The only way I could see that happening is by erasing a lot of humanity, which I'm not exactly keen on.
it helps to understand the proper role for such wiring from an evolutionary perspective.
the liberal brain is all about exploring and experimenting, "what's that noise in the bushes"
sometimes its a new food, sometimes ur the food.
the conservative brain knows (fear) being food so when they hear a rustling in the bushes they nope on out of there without a second thought... never to discover that new food.
we need both brain wirings in a stable population, but problems arise when decisions are made for the whole group based on the wiring of just one or the other.
Epiphany can never come for climate change deniers. This one thing would force them to do something they fear more than anything else. And that is objective introspection. The thing about living in a delusional fantasy world is that if you pull at one thread, even a little, the whole ball of yarn comes unraveled. And then, you have to look inside yourself and face some things about yourself that might not make you comfortable. No, better to continue to live in your fantasy, where it's safe.
There’s been a drought but it’s actually been nice and unseasonably cool here in WI the last few days, even down into the 50s overnight. It’s still 57 right now in fact. But going to be back up in the 90s next week.
I say our two best chances are 1) aliens (1 chance in ten billion) or 2) Jesus (1 chance in 100 billion). Upon His return, Jesus will speak: "Holy Shit!...I can't believe how you fucked this place up so badly! Amen."
So the “earths climate is always changing, it’s normal!” argument is the one that bothers me the most because ok sure let’s say that it’s all totally natural, we as a species still need to take steps to ensure that it won’t kill us all. Just because it’s “normal” does not make it any less dangerous to us. Regardless of the cause, it won’t stop the oceans from rising or bees from dying or any of that, so we still need to start coming up with some solutions.
At least the space lasers and government hoax people are just stupid, the it’s totally normal people have just accepted the death of the human race with not questions at all.
>So the “earths climate is always changing, it’s normal!”
Think of what these imbeciles are really saying: They're saying that literally no matter how the climate changes that it's normal. That's not an "argument". These people are not arguing - they have no idea what tools are even necessary for this. We shouldn't dignify their functional psychoses by saying they've joined the stage of rationality upon which debate can take place.
the main reason these people exist and continue to exist: bigotry
they have to stick it to the liberals. it's why they pollute on purpose. why do they hate the liberals? because the liberals are anti-bigotry. the end.
why are they against common sense health care that will save us all money will providing more people with coverage? to stick it to the liberals
why are they against every action that reduces the abortion rate instead taking every action that increases the abortion rate, all while claiming they are against abortion? to stick it to the liberals. they don't care about abortion. that's why every pro-life policy increases the abortion rate.
it's even in the comic... soy beans! on no! the estrogen! but... the most powerful phytoestrogen is in hops. even the potato... full of them.
the boomers in my house think our wildfires in my province are started exclusively by indigenous people wanting a 'free ride' (evacuation) to winnipeg, lol, because Boomers literally don't see natives as people and have been conditioned by decades of screaming faces on the news to think natives are always after free stuff, not that theyre humans and how disruptive evacuations are to ones sanity, community, etc. Boomers have literally some of the world bad faith / good will I've seen of any generation around me to the point that it feels useless trying to tell them their knee jerk reactions based on *literally nothing,* they just hear a fire is going and decide *oh natives set it on purpose,* like fuck these old cunts. They literally do not have the literacy to disseminate news, truth from fiction, source bias, etc, it is cringe how much of a drop of in capacity to rationalize adults over 50 and 60 seem to possess.
>No it isn’t. The hair is wrong
Blonde hair.
>and why is she shouting at a family?
Because that is what the writer imagine conservatives are like. That is literally the point of the comic, showing what the writer imagines climate change deniers look like and act.
>She also doesn’t wear spectacles
[What would you call these?](https://s.abcnews.com/images/Politics/marjorie-taylor-greene-gty-mz-07-230403_1680528433810_hpMain_16x9_992.jpg)
>It’s hyperbole or exaggeration of a conspiracy theorist not a direct quote.
So it is just a coincidence that they have a climate change denier looking like MTG scream about jewish space lasers when she is made out to have engaged in climate change denial by talking about jewish space lasers?
I don’t think you understand satire or caricatures. Those are reading glasses, you wouldn’t parody someone by not using their most memorable appearance. But sure.
Imagine that it’s about her and then say the quote is wrong if that makes more sense to you.
https://i.imgur.com/A81trro.png she said the laser part
the "Jewish" was implicit in the remarking on "Rothschild". If it's close enough for me to spot it as a red flag, I'm sure the cryptofascists reading her comments noticed it too.
Wow this is way worse than I thought; I'd always assumed it was some offhand comment that probably didn't make sense - but holy cow she sounds seriously mentally ill. The poor meth head who wanders by my condo is less delusional
There is literally nothing realistic that can be done to stop this. The media will be complicit in this - it's going to be socially engineered. AI algorithms are going play an even bigger role in making people even more evil.
Unrelated but what do you think about even the heatwaves being megathreaded? Feel like apart from the information in the articles, number was just as good for communicating the urgency. It is a shame.
Reddit is not the best platform for this. Not sure what is, if we had to have a "pinned" for all the crises, it would just become a nested sub-forum, a subreddit within a subreddit. It's a design problem and a philosophical problem.
As a practical ideal, I'd like to a see a rotating pinned "emergency" post, what's called a carousel or slider. Or at least pop up a random one from a defined list.
We're trying to represent a model, a map, of disaster and misery... and a mega-thread is hardly fitting.
The reddit problem is built-in. For example, if this was a classic forums, moderators could more easily move posts around and manually, like papers edit their front page.
I don't think that there's a solution here.
I have a co-worker who is a Q adjacent MAGA enthusiast and we were talking about the Canadian wildfires one day when the smoke came. He fully believes that the cause of the fires is that the forests aren't being raked enough. There is no getting through to these people.

It's Ruben Bolling. I'm actually the [original poster of this cartoon](https://www.reddit.com/r/editorialcartoons/comments/154yth2/what_we_imagined_climate_change_deniers_would_say/). I posted it from the source, Daily Kos's cartoon section. For some reason other people choose to scrape the cartoons I post in r/editorialcartoons and repost them as i.redd.it instead of using the original link - then nobody knows where it came from. It's just chance that I happened to see it here and your comment.
IDK why people make more work for themselves by saving the hotlink as a file and uploading it as i.redd.it. All they have to do is repost the same link I already found - it's faster that way.

This comic especially reminds me of living in Miami, where it is patently obvious that flooding is getting worse and worse and it's not uncommon at all to get inches of standing water in places you normally traverse on a daily basis. And yet climate change denial is extremely common there. I'm like, it's happening right around you, all the time, right now??
People have been primed to deny reality, look at the education spat from desantis, so I think we are uniquely fighting an uphill battle people are used to waving away facts they dislike
The last one reminds me of the little island off the northern east coast that is doing just that. They have been offered to be bought out and to get off the island as scientists expect it to be underwater within the next couple of years, but nope! They want their bail out money from the government so they can build a sea wall around the island. Ay ay ay ay these one brain cell folks. I wish I could remember the island, but it was recently in the headlines a month back.
No, that'd be what they were saying when they were in denial. Now they're singing to the tune of "now isn't the time for politics, let's plant some trees. We're trying to be a part of the solution, and if you don't support us, you're the problem."
These delusional, hopelessly ignorant assholes should all be put in asylums. 5150's: dangers to themselves and others.
Too bad there's about 100 million of these fuckmelons in the US.
The only good news is that they won't be around much longer, one way or another.
