Yeah, so orange spot and elon shut down cyber security, so much more fun to come.
Laser_Disc_Hot_Dish@reddit
Apparently they’re only used when the solar panel user/client is behind on payments, but what’s to stop them from turning it off in a scenario where they’d be oh, idk, invading the country. It seems this kill switch model is in a lot of different products like Teslas, for example, to be used in a similar circumstance of someone being behind on payments. So definitely don’t get any neural links in the future. Black Mirror nailing it as per usual.
Constant_Mud7080@reddit
You’re moronic if you think a full scale invasion on US soil could ever happen.
dyorite@reddit
No one is interested in invading the US, why put in the effort when the US does a splendid job of destroying itself.
Laser_Disc_Hot_Dish@reddit
Either that’s a good joke or you seriously underestimate the egos of the USA’s many enemies who would love nothing more to take pictures of themselves in the White House, pillaging it before they burn it down. They may opportunistically wait until the US weakens itself dramatically, but they’d for sure invade for old times sake and have a little fun before delivering the coup de grâce.
supaloopar@reddit
What is with the overinflated victimhood mentality? No one has been able to explain to me WHY China even wants to invade the US when it can just negotiate with the world for what it wants.
dyorite@reddit
lol late to the response, but this exactly. No reasonable person thinks China actually wants to invade the US. Even if China were as cartoonishly set on world domination as people act like it is, no sane military planner would consider a ground invasion of a peer military power across the world’s biggest ocean without even having a staging area remotely worth it, especially in the context of the rival fucking themselves up perfectly fine on their own. They’re so militarily cautious they’ve put off invading Taiwan for decades despite threatening it and actually having strategic and political reasons to do so, and you think they’re going to invade America?
Adorable-Middle-5754@reddit
Massive amount of land and natural resources would be two good reasons.
supaloopar@reddit
That makes no sense, you can just simply fix your local issues than to invade. Which is what China is addressing. This isn’t the Columbus-era
Laser_Disc_Hot_Dish@reddit
I mean, any country that considers themselves an enemy to the US. Doesn’t have to be China. It’s not victimhood, it’s a hypothetical scenario of any country to be invaded by its enemies.
supaloopar@reddit
The whole world knows it's exceedingly hard to invade the US. Why even consider it?
What can't be achieved through diplomacy that needs some macho display of force

Depends on your argument, you can claim they crossed the pacific in order to occupy those islands, same with the East Indies and the Indian Ocean.
If you’re going to be insanely absolute with your facts, then I’ll tenuously use mine just to counter your weak argument. If you refuse to use Japan, surely you could make an argument for the Ottoman Empire, who are also not white.

China doesn't look at the US as an adversary. Try reading Chinese sources for Chinese views lol
azure275@reddit
I genuinely don't think the people actually in charge in China care themselves, there's just posturing
What China actually wants is kind of Imperial Japan during WWII - take ownership of most of asia and anything they need to keep the US or anyone else out of it, and use trade to become the most influential country worldwide.
The US can just devolve into garbage off on it's own continent on the other side of the world, doesn't really matter to them.
No-Impress-2096@reddit
Russia would love that. They're not on the enemy list any longer for some reason though.
HalfBeatingHeart@reddit
At a previous job the CEO’s husband was an author and they wrote a trilogy with pretty much this whole premise. Everything manufactured in China that was electrical had a remote device that could shut it down.
Everything gets shut down, and as you said with no power they let the US destroy themselves from within. Then after several months or so then the troops come in under the guise of humanitarian aid, then once they have enough on the ground start the creeping take over.
I’d have to go find the copy of the first book to remember the name, I’m sure the story may be decent but he had an obsession with airplanes and there was a point where there was 3-4 pages of just describing all technical details of an airplane and I had to put it down.
crusoe@reddit
Jokes on them though. One rumor I saw for why Xi fired his missile forces commanders was not just about the rockets being filled with water, but that someone had deeply hacked their systems including missile hardware.
1) The CPUs used in their nuclear warheads, imported via shell companies (ITAR Restricted hardened CPUS, etc), had microcode injections and hardware alterations that would cause launch failure or premature detonations.
2) Someone had hacked the servers storing their hypersonic missile research and subtly changed the data. That's why after previous announcements of successful tests, China ran into a series of failures. The original data apparently was unrecoverable.

Solar is great, but overall I'm not a fan for large installations. This wasn't a reason but now it's a big reason.
Tyrthemis@reddit
It’s just because they chose to lease the panels instead of buy them. So if the party leading the panels doesn’t pay, the owner of the panels can shut them down. An easy solution to this worry is buying the panels, which is the better long term decision anyways
Tyrthemis@reddit
Easy solution to this dilemma, stop leasing panels and buy them instead, train maintenance personnel.

My own 3 cents: Your next goal should be 1 week, then 2 weeks Take an inventory of what you have, you might have more than you think you do Think about what all situations could arise, be it weather events, life events, financial events, health events etc.
If you want more recommendations let me know.
FursonaNonGrata@reddit
Well, hell with it. So many other things in my life are going ways I never expected. Might as well. What can you recommend for a basic "week at home" setup? I have a studio and 2 of us live there, but we could store the stuff in the bathroom.
No-Breadfruit-4555@reddit
Seriously. You can go a long time with limited food. No water for a day, and day 2 is going to be a bad day. Day 3 will be horrible. Day 4 and you’ll do almost anything for it. Day 5 and you’re done.

The most important thing is to buy what you eat and eat what you buy.
Food:
Shelf stable proteins (meat, seafood, nut butters, beans + rice makes a complete protein)
Shelf stable carbs (pasta, rice, grits, some cereals, etc)
Shelf stable meals (heat and eat - no water or low water needed, chunky soups, canned soups with meat, canned vegetables)
Shelf stable sides (fruit can be eaten right out of the can)
Freeze dried meals (boil water, add to bag, let sit, eat)
A way to cook food without electricity or natural gas (butane stove, isobutane stove)
Water:
Smaller jugs might make sense for you small space use case. Store them away from light and off of concrete.
1 gal jugs from the grocery and some individual 16.9 oz size. 2 gal per person per day. 2 ppl x 7 days = 14 gallons
Do not forget you pets, they rely on you for everything. Keep also in mind that larger animals need more food and more water than smaller animals. Adding an extra gallon per day should cover this.
A way to purify, sanitize, and get debris out of water. Sawyer makes good products, abodes hydro blu. Grayl makes a great water bottle sized filter. I love it and I have 2.
I could go on but watching YouTube videos might be more time efficient. These are some of my favorite channels.

Just as a heads-up, bathrooms disqualify themselves for storage as heat and especially HUMIDITY can spoil many items. Under beds, under tables, or just a tidy arrangement of boxes/milkcrates along one wall are ideas though.
Good luck with the prepping!
DapperDame89@reddit (OP)
I forgot to add some sort of power source. A small solar generator and solar panels would do you wonders. Look into eco flow bluetti jackery etc. Some of the small knock off ones are still pretty good too.
You will have to get creative with storage and staying organized. But that doesn't mean it can't be done.
You pantry is some of the best insurance money can buy. Shop sales. Deal on something, maybe buy a few extra, but remember first in, first out.
For anything boxed or canned, get you some neon or colored yard sale stickers that are blank. 2025 gets a color, 2026 get another color, and so on and so forth. This really helps.
Do not forget any medication you or your pets need to stay healthy.
I hope this is helpful.
Big_Fortune_4574@reddit
Might I recommend some non-Chinese made solar panels? :)
d_to_the_c@reddit
Probably not in the solar panels, but the charge controllers, inverters, and smart batteries that already have radios in them. My guess is cellular if they say it can get around your firewall. However most people don't set up outbound rules on their home networks so maybe its just wifi.
Big_Fortune_4574@reddit
I am aware thank you
DapperDame89@reddit (OP)
This obviously raises concerns about our power grid, access to power being broken, and the need to prepare for a grid down situation.
Obviously very few places (if any) are running entirely on solar but this could cause temporary blackouts or brown outs if energy had to be diverted from another area to supplement.
unsurewhatiteration@reddit
This is exactly why I maintain, in my own house and not connected to any grid, the battery and solar panel capacity to at least keep a fridge, freezer, toaster oven, and Internet running more or less indefinitely.
No-Breadfruit-4555@reddit
Solid advice, but… I’m going to bet those came from China as well?
unsurewhatiteration@reddit
Sure did, definitely going to be harder to acquire right now.
There might be US-made options, not sure. The Chinese ones were the best blend of price and functionality when I bought.

I think the biggest red flag is the Democrats seeming getting into bed with China, pushing solar while stopping alternative power sources and letting kill switches sneak by? Was this all planned? WTF!?
BonniestLad@reddit
It sounds like you may need to give yourself a refresher on how legislation works in this country, along with maybe educating yourself on how the elected representatives that together; make up our congress, function on a day-to-day basis. It’s severely flawed, it incentivizes reps to focus on committees instead of doing their jobs, and you’ll start to understand why term limits are becoming an increasingly popular pitch….but “democrats getting into bed with China, pushing solar while stopping alternative power sources…” doesn’t make any sense for reasons I could probably write a short dissertation trying to explain.

Ok the good news here is that it is only in inverters and batteries.
Inverters are trivial (requires an licensed journeyman electrician) to replace.
The better news is they are relatively cheap now a days. Say around $1000 US per for solar power plant sized inverters.
The very bad news is according to the Reuters article they have already used it last November in Texas.
And I never heard about it at the time.
So no inverters made in China and no Chinese battery's.
What I want to know is why the list of inverters is not available by now.

DapperDame89@reddit (OP)
I'm sure there is a big oil motive. Threat to the grid, no matter the source, is real. This is what I hope people take from this.
sevensevensevensev@reddit
I'm sure it's not just in us solar farms the Chinese produce most of the world's solar panels. They could cripple some smaller nations/area that paid for and depend on this for power. Either way, I think we should be preparing the US grid as much as possible, even natural disasters have taken d9wn areas for far to long.
joshuacrime@reddit
Well, it's the Telegraph. A notorious right-wing screed sheet of the UK.
I don't see a single documented bit of evidence here. All speculations of how it might be used. If the vulnerabilities are exploited in spite of the possible counter-measures we might have.
I've never filled up a Weasel Word bingo card that didn't come from the Telegraph or the Daily Mail in a short article before. That's some kind of record.

Reuters article from March, updated May 15

joshuacrime@reddit
I know. Since we know about it, there are ways to combat it. It's not as if people don't know about firmware security vulnerabilities. The fact that a newspaper knows is enough.
But that doesn't mean I trust anything the Telegraph says. And it could be true that they did that. When you destroy all of your regulatory bodies, this kind of stuff can slip through.
However, if it was REALLY that much of a concern, you'd hear from more than just journalists and whistle blowers. Or even gov't officials.
I'm pretty sure that the 'kill switch' is able to be disabled as part of the payment completion, in principle anyway. But we all know about it. I'm sure the security people do as well.
And how to prevent it. And use it as a leveraging point against the Chinese in diplomacy. Lord knows they use that crap on us enough.
But it doesn't stop oil and gas energy companies from reaping the benefit of a distrust in solar energy based on something that can probably be defeated with external code, isolation or a pair of wire cutters. And that is RIGHT up the Telegraph's alley. And Reuters, for that matter.
That oil money goes a long way, mate.
DapperDame89@reddit (OP)
Using things get buried rather than uncovered, I mean, this is the government we are talking about here 🤣🤦♀️
Oh the oil companies absolutely benefit from this distrust. But, the outcome directly affects us citizens on who decides to do what and when, and if they decide to do that, we need to at least try to prepare for that "if".
joshuacrime@reddit
True, but only to a point. That's really now how they do things anymore. It was when I was a kid, for sure. But not anymore.
Cover-ups do not work anymore. There no way to really control access to information anymore if someone is determined enough and has the know-how.
Flooding the zone is what Bannon says, but it's not like he created it or anything. He just takes credit for shit that goes his way, just like Trump does. It's a deliberate tactic. Flooding the zone is as old as media itself. Bannon thinks he's Carl von Clausewitz or something, which he ain't. He's not dumb, but he ain't all that. None of them are. Musk, Trump, etc.
And yep, we do need to prepare for it. And I'm quite certain we are.
DapperDame89@reddit (OP)
I guess I was talking about burying any govt agency involvement.
I do think there is an issue of "flooding the zone". There's so much info for our "eat berries in caves" brains that it can be very hard for the average person to weed out the bullshit. It's a coverup of "bury them in paperwork" rather than "say an alternative story over and over until its drilled in, the latter does still work on at least some of the population. gestures wildly

FrankSkellington@reddit
Indeed. This news comes the day after the news that Britain's trade deal with the US would allow the US to dictate Britain's trade with China in the interests of US security.
China's leading role in renewable energy is always being attacked. When world leaders want to avoid taking action on climate change, they always point at China as the worst polluter. Doing the west's manufacturing, they naturally have a high carbon output, but by head of population, they are one of the least polluting of the industrial world.
Although I can't see invasion as a motive, being ringfenced by US military installations, I could understand China seeing a need for such a switch. It's like China saying, "behave yourself or there'll be no tv for you tonight."
What do the gun lobby say? The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a kill switch.
(For clarity, I don't believe the Chinese government are a bunch of good guys.)
DeleteriousDiploid@reddit
The Chinese government has done insanely wasteful things. Search any of these and you'll find videos online.
There was a scheme to bring in ride sharing bikes to cities but the incentives on it resulted in a lot of companies all trying to cash in on it. The outcome of which was that vastly more bikes were built than it was possible to use. So now there are literal mountains of bikes being scrapped.
https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2018/03/bike-share-oversupply-in-china-huge-piles-of-abandoned-and-broken-bicycles/556268/
Similar thing happened with EVS flooding the market resulting in fields full of rotting cars.
For years China kept it's economy alive via huge infrastructure projects and building homes. Hence insane statistics like:
https://www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/china-us-cement
Cement is a huge source of CO2 emissions and this rate of growth is completely unsustainable. Worse however is that a lot of this stuff is completely pointless. Buildings that never get finished because the developers were scamming people is exceptionally common. It's one of the most common reasons for the small number of protests which actually happen in China and people routinely lose all their savings on these scams.
Then you have entire cities that do get finished but are so surplus to demand that most buildings sit empty and end up just getting demolished or abandoned.
Then all the incredibly shoddy construction projects where people cut corners due to corruption and use unsuitable materials resulting in collapses. Again a tonne of videos of building and bridges collapsing. The media didn't bother telling anyone this but that building collapse in Thailand recently was a belt and road project built by a Chinese company. It happened because they cut corners and used improper rebar. That is a constant occurrence in China.
Same thing with the products exported to the west. We don't buy from China because we have a choice anymore. We buy Chinese stuff because they have succeeded in dominating the entire market. For anyone who wants to say 'that's just free market capitalism' no it's not. They have claimed to be a developing country (all the while investing in a space program) in order to get subsidised shipping and tend to just declare everything as gift with a much lower value than it actually has to avoid duties. It's actively cheating the system at best and deliberate economic warfare from the top at worst. ie. Cornering the market on items like medications and masks represents and national security issue.
Is there anyone who hasn't ended up with a fake product from China? I know I've ended up with fake batteries and fake SD cards from Amazon. How often do you see reviews saying it was cheap garbage that broke immediately and they threw it away? How much pollution is produced to generate unusable scam products which get exported to unsuspecting buyers? This is very much the fault of big US companies allowing this also but the corruption and complete lack of regulations in China is a significant issue when it comes to pollution and waste.
FrankSkellington@reddit
I agree, and you've given me plenty of avenues there to explore. But the scamming I now have to be wary of on ebay is nothing compared to impact on my quality of life due to the scamming done by my own government in Britain (no matter which party is in control).
Planeandaquariumgeek@reddit

In late 2024, a situation arose where Deye inverters, supplied by Sol-Ark in the US, were reportedly disabled or switched off. This action was not solely a Sol-Ark or Deye decision but also involved other entities, potentially due to a commercial dispute or blacklisting of stolen inverters. Shit could collapse any day without China's involvement.

My intention is no to fear monger, only to help people be aware of potential risks. Even if this mean this ends up being a nothing burger, the potential is still there and it could have an effect on supply demand for alternative power sources.
I.e. people get freaked out and either a.) Boycott b.) Start buying from other countries or domestic and they can't make them fast enough c.) Some wackjob decides to try to take out a solar field. d.) China decides to no longer sell to US due to accusations making energy prices go up when we have to source from elsewhere

Is there a credible news article for this, the telegraph doesn’t have the best track record

Reminder: in Trump's first term they approved of a deal to sell a huge parcel of land to a Chinese company. The land was right beside one of the largest US airforce test bases where new planes are trialed. The contract was for them build a windfarm on top of a hill but the wind turbines themselves were excessively tall and became the tallest in the US if I recall. Doing the maths on the height of the turbines, the height of the hill and the distance from the airbase demonstrated that it would have been completely feasible to stick cameras on the turbines to spy on the base. If they were regular size it probably would have been possible.
The land also had access to the Mexican border and it's own runway. The runway was widened to accommodate large freight aircraft shortly after purchase and some large aircraft were seen landing.
All large Chinese companies have CCP oversight and the CCP seeks to seamlessly merge civilian and military applications as part of their hybrid warfare. They now have the ability to spy on an airbase, cut power to it in the event of war and have easy access to multiple routes to bring in supplies or troops without much oversight. The Trump admin allowed this to happen.

Not for nothing, but I work out in the gateway to the west...home of windmills for miles and miles.
The government is in fact building a port/dock or some type of secretive structure. I spoke to the employee contractors and they knew nothing other than it's a government contract
My work takes me directly to the base of the windmills. The lil warehouses amongst the hills. I see the employes constanly doing repairs and operations. Just everyday folks who most likely don't know better.
If there IS a kill switch, what's scary is that it's normal folks working at those jobs. Diverse and very normal. They don't know how to fix that type of complexity. They turn wrenches, not read code.
