Some places are difficult to cycle around safely, so people don't .
Milton Keynes is easy to cycle safely. BUT crucially has excellent roads, and as people are naturally inclined to be lazy, the cycling here is not as good as it should be.
So it kinda is cycling paradise (in some ways), or has the potential to be, but that paradise is populated by lazy humans.
Baby, I'm from Milton Keynes (Oh, yeah)
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of (Oh, come on)
There's nothin' you can't do (Come on)
Now you're in Milton Keynes (Oh, yeah)
Probably one of the greenest cities in the country. Many parks either wooded or open grass spaces dotted around. Not to mention the rivers, canal, ponds and lakes.
They were testing them for ages in the land near the old test centre in CMK. Then they moved the pos to the stadium. Not sure if it's still running or not
That was one of the original plans. Some of the original roads had wide verges to potentially support a monorail or something in future. I guess that was when folks started to realise how bad they were for the likes of Brockway, Ogdenville & North Haverbrook 😉
That pot boiler popular in editions of the of late 70s and early 80s MK Gazette, do we build a train or monorail from Bletchley via the V8 reservation to the centre and then on to Stony etc.
Love MK and hate this baseless argument against it. Utter bollocks! MK has the most green space per person of all the cities in the UK at 60sqm per person. For comparison, Oxford only has 36sqm pp.
Furzton lake is a farm pond that was enlarged to assist with the balancing lakes. There's a fair bit of concrete in there... It's a nice place though for sure 👍
No it’s a perfect design of a City being slowly ruined.
City of trees
Extensive cycling network (redways)
Perfect road system allowing you to drive or ride a motor vehicle from one side to the other in 10mins.
Great train connections.
Lots to do both in Nature and in buildings.
Lots of parks lakes and woods to enjoy nature.
The main thing we lack is an underground tube systems or overground train system for effective public transport.
Taxis are cheap compared to other cities.
The main thing we lack is a city centre that's worth spending time in without spending money. There may be plenty of shops and restaurants to go to, but all the space in between is empty
Never really paid attention to how much taller the Almere building is. That will be dwarfed by the new approved building next to the Premier Inn a block down towards the station on Avebury.
This photo looking the other way before the new bit existed all the way down to the park on Midsummers day looked glorious. I remember seeing one taken from a chopper back in the '80s
I think whereas most city centres are more like a high street with small shops etc contrasts a lot to MK which is mostly offices and parking. Everyone is inside making it feel eerie. I like it tho
We are lucky to have so many green spaces. However, I think we will continue to lose more and more. I understand the councils struggles with developers. But they are terrible at getting any kind of balance or stopping them from doing whatever they want.
Example, did you know the Jury's inn was built two floors taller than agreed? The council did nothing about it. In the next 10 years we'll lose most of Campbell park and I'd expect areas round fuzton, lake, the bowl and Teardrops to be used too.
Great if you want an air BnB, a brothel or an empty property owned by foreign investment fund.
The investment fund bit is right, they take the piss and own half the city with many houses and apartments empty 11months of the year. The parks won't be built on, however it will get higher and wider.
We'll see...I really really hope you are right and I'm just having a bad day 😂
But yes, the area of mk I'm in about 1 in every 5/6 houses are empty for all of most of the year. The road I'm on alone has 22 houses and 4 are empty and have been for years.
No obligation, but the parks trust have already started taking the money. Did you complete their survey last year, asking about what people's thoughts were on building in and around the park? And also bringing in parking charges for the smaller carparks around Campbell. I know eventually they will go as that wider land has always been planned for development.
They are already building within the park for the flats where the old car park was near the wharf. Both sides going from the centre to the canal have always been planned to be built upon and submissions were surprisingly recently declined to build at the car park by the mooring points. That developer will be back and will eventually win. Then it's just a matter of time, right offer to replace the area around the cricket pitch etc.

I don't think MK is a concrete jungle where deams are made. It cyclists and walkers paradise!
TH14sBoombox@reddit
The data would show that it's not a cyclists dream. Levels are similar or lower to other comparable places.

Walk from the center to Oldbrook/Fishermead after midnight on a friday night. Thats always fun.

Urban design classic, although they should have built the monorail
Mammoth_Shoe_3832@reddit
Milton Keynes is actually a forest city. There are 22 million trees over 6000 acres of MK. That is more trees than all the surrounding towns combined.
phead@reddit
errr, no. Thats about 400% higher tree count than an actual forest.

Trees do not turn a concrete jungle into a forest city. Without things living in them, they're just green lampposts

Yeah i walked from the train station towards whitehouse last year and was so surprised at all the hidden green spaces and walkways

This huge central reservation should have been a tram

Nah, monorail!!!
cflyssy@reddit
I can't think how cool it would have been to actually have a monorail running through CMK from the station.
Russ_mk@reddit
they we're planning driverless pods a while ago which would have been cool

I've seen them not too long ago. I can't recall where. But I'm sure I didn't dream it.

I know Milton Keynes well having shopped there for the last 20+ years.
I think it’s a beautiful city and would be very happy to live there, but in a modern house.
Some of the experimental 1960s/70s housing is best avoided though.

A lovely row of trees surrounded by 6 lanes of roads and car parks. Not exactly a peaceful spot to sit beneath the shade.

Why would you go looking for a peaceful spot along the main road through a city centre.
There's literally a massive park with trees and hills and benches 3 mins walk from there.

Thats mk

West-Ad-1532@reddit
Milton Keynes to drive round is fantastic. The centre itself has an odd empty almost ghost city feel about it .... Eerie...
The outer edges are great, flat and green. We live in Stony ATM just bought a bigger place in Towcester.
Coming from West Yorkshire it's a drivers dream....
