Would you send it?

2 different height signs 13’3 and 13’6 Clear. Pulled off to the side and stared at it for about 20 mins. Luckily someone came up and said they’d lookout for me if I sent it, so I sent it. Lowered suspension height and made it but man that was sketchy. Wwyd
Fuzzy1598@reddit
I had the over height sensor go off in Richmond Virginia. I know I was under but still took the loop. Always better safe than sorry.
Bubbly-Technology146@reddit (OP)
They have those? Where do I get one?
Fuzzy1598@reddit
You can get a measuring stick. Not sure where though
SaltyTips@reddit
Some roads have over-height signs that light up when someone over 13 6 or whatever it is drives past. I wish you had a sensor in your truck....
nikifullerton@reddit
Richmond or Norfolk?
Fuzzy1598@reddit
Richmond. Coming in on 64.
nikifullerton@reddit
That is so weird. I don't know of any low bridges on I-64 in Richmond, but that one before the tunnel leaving Norfolk is pretty bad. I've had to loop back around many times.
Fuzzy1598@reddit
I think the max bridge height is 13' 10 in Richmond. My fifth wheel sits high. I probably hit a bump and it triggered it. Needless to say I didn't want to test it.😂 10 dollar toll is better than fines and headaches.
Complex_Capital_373@reddit
How did it go
Bubbly-Technology146@reddit (OP)
Made it with an extra pair of undies and some fireball
Complex_Capital_373@reddit
I’ve been under that one, sometimes the clearance is higher they just mark it low.. can’t trust them everytime .. believe that.. I’m glad you had enough fireball to make it through.. did you at least toss the undies in the road to even it out
First-Olive-1181@reddit
My truck is 12’4” I’m blowing through that
pandagreen17@reddit
If this is north-east, or at an elevation that regularly sees snow, sometimes the signs will show what the clearance is with snow taken into account
DullNecessary4516@reddit
It says 13’6 on the bridge sign
driftinggalaxie71@reddit
No. The 13'6" I was probably put on there when the bridge was built, The 13'3" after the road was repaved.

Fun_Huckleberry_8290@reddit
I believe the middle portion is 13'6", and sides are 13'3". Regardless, that is a risky move. You don't know if road was recently paved and it elevated the middle section.

There is a non 0% chance that the atoms of your truck will slide right through the space of the atoms of the bridge.
IBringTheHeat2@reddit
Buy your self one of them measuring sticks, that way you can actually measure it and not have to guess
chaoss402@reddit
If I don't fit the first time I'll fit on my way back through.
fireslayer03@reddit
I’m 12-9 so sure I love scaring the folks behind me 😂
Jessi_longtail@reddit
Welcome to the game I have to play all the time in NY, because the marked bridge height is never what they actually say it is. Perfect example, there's a bridge I go under when I'm heading to a specific landfill, and it's marked 12'9", but I clear with my 13'-4"-13'6" setup (changes depending on what type of trailer I'm pulling that day) no problem. Another bridge I run by often is marked for 12'10" if I remember correctly, but the lowest clearance on it is 14'1". However one that I used to run under when training for my CDL is marked 12'9", and the clearance is like, 13'8", and others are just whatever the sign actually says. NY bridge clearances are confusing as fuck, and yet people around her still wonder why we have trucks hit them so often
Zandor75@reddit
NY allows for packed snow unless the sign says "actual".
Jessi_longtail@reddit
Well yeah that's part of it, but typical rule of thumb is a bridge is roughly 10-12 inches taller than what the sign claims it is unless yes, it says actual. Trust me, even with our bad storms, you're never driving on top of 10 inches of snow, through yes, on no. From what I've heard for the bridge measurement, they go from the center of the axle to the top of the bridge, instead of just from the road surface to the bridge. I'm sure there's a reason why, but it just makes navigating around here a pain sometimes
Zandor75@reddit
I hear ya, it was always dicey running out east. My favorite was pulling up to a low bridge in Quebec marked in meters (not feet & inches) & everyone speaks French. I'd wait till I saw an oncoming tractor trailer clear it...
Jessi_longtail@reddit
I'm local around central and Western NY state and yeah, the winters can definitely get dicey. Always fun doing 25-30 mph on the thruway at 4 am and in a blizzard with 5 inches on the road.
Bubbly-Technology146@reddit (OP)
Facts the first time I passed gwb those signs fkd me up so hard lmao I pulled over to the shoulder and waited for another truck to go under them just to be sure AND that one bridge on 278s near Brooklyn where the left lane is low clearance but the right lane is fine oml 😮💨 ny is not for the feint of heart
Jessi_longtail@reddit
Oh I'm not even talking about NYC, THE WHOLE STATE IS LIKE THAT. I run up in central NY state and it's just as bad. There's a bridge around my area that's famous for trucks hitting it, even though the road is marked as non-commercial and there's like, a dozen signs in each direction warning that it's an 11'9" bridge, but literally dozens of trucks hit it each year. Onondaga parkway bridge the undefeated heavyweight champ
Bubbly-Technology146@reddit (OP)
Lmao I just looked it up they probably staring at the lake huh 😂
Jessi_longtail@reddit
Stare at it all you want, just don't swim in it. It's better now but that lake toxic as fuck

OMG I live in York and I don't even know where that is. There's a bridge in seven valleys York co PA with I think an 11 clearance and trucks plow through it like every other month.
Bubbly-Technology146@reddit (OP)
Shoot sorry Baldwinville MA, getting mixed up. Here’s the nearest business by the bridge if you wanna take a look at it on satellite

shepwrick@reddit
I think someone told me that bridge was built like 80 years ago, and been struck 60~ times. Three in the last six months. And the guy that hit it around October 2024 bent the railroad tracks out of order
HauntedHairDryer@reddit
That's not a PA road sign

Me, innocently doom scrolling, sees bridge straight from a horror movie with line: would you send it. My brain: not without a priest.
Late-Recognition5587@reddit
That'd be really close. Probably doable. But, I'd likely have gone a different route in my trip planning. This wouldn't be a truck route.
Nolon@reddit
You know sometimes you get a really bad itch on your back Yeah just send it might feel good you know for the top of the truck
TruckinTuba@reddit
Im under 12' so I would
gecoble@reddit
The 13.6 sign is old and before they repaved the road.
Beautiful_War_6578@reddit
I'd believe the road sign than what's listed on the bridge. So no, I would look for any kind of detour
DrummingNozzle@reddit
I'm tanker and we're 12'6" height with a mid-roof tractor. Absolutely I'd send it. 😊
CobraWasTaken@reddit
That seems high. I'm about 12' with a food grade tanker
SanityNotFound@reddit
Same. I think the only thing that puts me over 12' is my exhaust
thestug93@reddit
I agree. I regularly drive under racks marked 12'0"
NostradamusJones@reddit
Yall are unnatural.
Bubbly_Direction302@reddit
Same! Full steam ahead.
stephenforbes@reddit
Just slap some fifth wheel greese on top of truck and trailer and your good.
d3athbygaming@reddit
Before I scrolled, my first thought was PA. Got sent thru some crazy places in my 8 months of trucking. If I'm not mistaken, there's several low clearances on that highway. I was stuck right in front of the first one, blocking traffic, calling dispatch and the state troopers for almost 2 hrs. Dropped the bags, clenched the cheeks, and went for it!😂😂😂😂 Had to do the same in Cleveland as well.
Bubbly-Technology146@reddit (OP)
Lmao bro I vividly remember a bridge in PA where it was so curved that they had signs telling you to drive straight down the center on a two way and any movement left or right would get you stuck under the thing 😂
LuRkEr_ReKuL@reddit
Nope
dumbdistributor@reddit
Let some air out of tires. Apply soap to outer edges of trailer frame. Gun it.
USS_peepee@reddit
13’6” is probably the original height when the trail bridge was built. 13’3” is the new height as the road has been regraded and paved over the years.
NostradamusJones@reddit
You talk real smart.
USS_peepee@reddit
I get lucky on occasion
PsychologicalFood780@reddit
Yes, because my truck and trailer are 13'0. In fact, there's a bridge I have to go under on my route that's 13'0.
felixthecat59@reddit
I have encountered the same type of bridge. The arch is typically higher in the center, and lower on the edges.
Regular_Doughnut8964@reddit
Do I drive for Swift?
SlySpinglefinger@reddit
Nope I would not make it through this one lol
Glad_Bad_3628@reddit
You would think after all of these years that they would actually update the bridges and raise them or lower the the road , the same with high railroad crossings the rail road should have to make them level with the street or road they are on
Ghost-1911@reddit

RawkaGrand24@reddit
I was curious one day, because I don’t have a double bunk tractor. I measured my trucks highest point. It’s 12’6”. So I could confidently pass under while loaded - so long as my load isn’t higher than my truck.
gsanchez92@reddit

Educational_Pound671@reddit

Puzzleheaded_Fan3332@reddit
You out in maple valley?
LockportTrans@reddit
Maybe. I've been told by a permit office (MN or MI) that their height limitations (ie: the sign on the road) allot for bounce and deviation in road maintenance. Therefore they will post and permit as if door clearances are lower than they actually are. I took a height pole to one i was routed around and it lead to a fire road with a wooden bridge posting 8,000lbs max. That was when I called them and subsequently went and measured the bridge. It was significantly higher.

If you can, inform the DOT and local officials of the location and signage discrepancy?
Norsedragoon@reddit
DOT will check it, see the 13'3" is designated as 'on shoulder' and not even bother to measure it.
Norsedragoon@reddit
Not if it's anywhere near Shitcago, they don't repair the roads there, just add another layer and don't update the signs.

I was a propane tanker in Alaska. Many deliveries were well off the beaten path. I had one that took me down a 1 lane dirt road and over a river. When I got to the river, the bridge (300’ long) was repair/reinforced with 2”x6” planks. I called my boss and described where I was. He said, “ oh! You’re at the go fast bridge. Go fast of fall through!”
I probably had that seat cushion squeezed tight while I full throttled it across.
Made it, no issues.

I was told by someone at some point who likely didn't actually know either. But he said they post the height slightly lower than actual, for say snow or other variables that could cause a height difference.
Not sure if true, never had to find out and hopefully never have to.
TexasTango@reddit

happyexit7@reddit
It probably was 13-6, once. Then after multiple resurfacing now it’s 13-3. Good luck.
Definitive_confusion@reddit
If you're not sure you can fit, back it up about 100 yards and send it full speed. If you're too tall you need enough speed to take the bridge out. Hope that helps.

Fully drain your air bags. Then lower your seat to the floor. And right before you go under, pump your brakes untill the alarms are about to come on so you'll get rid of that extra air. Should just squeeze through. Also not really worth it, but u could spin tires for a while to get some of the tread off to lower it further.

Back in ‘78 I had a ‘77 Kenworth with the glass up in the roof and you could actually lean over and look up and see the passenger side CB antenna.
