Am I welcome in the uk?

So I was born in Australia to an English mother and I have a uk citizenship, I’ve become sick of living in Australia due to the heat and humidity and the lonely vibes I get living on an isolated island and I want to move to the uk as soon as I can. So do you think I will fit in well there?
Taskmistress1@reddit
As far as I'm concerned, you'd be very welcome.
Altruistic-Move9214@reddit
You would be so welcome. Might be worth checking out a few places to see where you’d enjoy the most! If you get over here, best of luck!
_Intricate_@reddit
Mate, you're as English as I am. Come on over. 👍
DrPerkyKSIforehead@reddit (OP)
Yeah, we’re you born in England? Or are you also Australian born
_Intricate_@reddit
I'm English.
ben_jamin_h@reddit
Ozzies and Kiwis generally fit in pretty well here, we have similar culture and most importantly have a similar pisstakey kind of vibe.
You will likely hate the weather apart from a couple of weeks in the summer.
Creative-Piece7888@reddit
Yeah I think this is a good point. You will fit in just fine but the winters particularly can be tough, gloomy and depressing! I don’t think coming from Australia that would be an easy adjustment so something to bear in mind
Chunderdragon86@reddit
It's ok winter isn't coming in fact it's been pretty Australian weather wise lately not humid though I visited Darwin many years ago that is intolerable weather wise id never want to live there nsw north of Sydney however I'd take that
PipBin@reddit
It’s not just the temperature though, it’s the lack of daylight. Dark at 3.45 and not light again until 8.30. You can go a whole week without seeing your house in the daylight.
Choice_Room3901@reddit
In Melbourne the shortest day is 10 hours of daylight, in the UK it’s 8, so not that much difference.
hakshamalah@reddit
I see what you're saying but that's 25% longer
Choice_Room3901@reddit
Maybe for some people it would make a big difference yeah.
The other thing about a lot of Australia though is that it’s actually quite cold a lot of the year, in the southern half.
In the mornings at 6am in November when I was there, in Melbourne area, it would be 3 degrees sometimes. Chilly
triciama@reddit
I'm in the north of Scotland. It was light until 22.30 tonight. I love our summers. Hate the dark nights
HippyWitchyVibes@reddit
As someone who moved to the UK from South Africa, the cooler weather has been absolutely blissful, honestly. I'm in Suffolk and even the summers here are too hot for me. I've just had to install aircon in my house!
jenny_in_texas@reddit
We recently moved from Texas to Brighton and Hove and are grateful for the weather. We chuckled the other day about a heat warning because we were tempted to throw on a jumper.
The winters aren’t as harsh as TX winters can be either but it does get a bit dreary towards the end of February and March.
Glad we made the move though.
zombiezmaj@reddit
We've had depressingly mild winters the last 10+ years.
It used to snow heavily at least once a year even in the south and that hasn't happened for maybe 15 years.
jenny_in_texas@reddit
Yes. That is pretty depressing. Where Dallas is in North Texas, we would not get much snow, but many severe ice storms. Very damaging for trees, and overhead power lines. It also turned roads into ice skating rinks.
But you know, there will always be the people that say climate change isn’t real, the airlines are spraying chemicals into the air, and the earth is flat. 🤷🏻♀️
KickOk1833@reddit
Ha! I'm from the states too and find the weather here to be very docile. Heat waves reach summer air conditioning temperatures, winters rarely hit freezing, it never rains hard, no tornadoes, hardly any lightning. Plus healthcare and cheap food at the grocery! Woo!
jenny_in_texas@reddit
Cheap and healthy food! I wish we could stay, but I must go to Vienna for 3 years. I sure hope we get to come back here when we are done there.
Weird1Intrepid@reddit
Does...does that mean the entire UK could fit inside Brighton now?
jenny_in_texas@reddit
Nope not at all, simply sharing our experience.
Weird1Intrepid@reddit
I was only teasing lol. I'm glad you are enjoying yourselves 😊
jenny_in_texas@reddit
Oh I assumed as much. We are so grateful to be here and the people we have met have really helped to restore our faith in humanity.
Inevitable_Resolve23@reddit
Glad to have y'all!
HippyWitchyVibes@reddit
Glad you're enjoying it here!
Steenies@reddit
I'm sorry madam, you're going to have to hand back your springbok jersey and your bottle of Mrs balls. That being said. It's nice not having to worry quit as much about skin cancer. Joburg has some of the highest uv levels in the world.
newbris@reddit
Don't get too complacent about skin cancer:
https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/may/27/rates-melanoma-skin-cancer-research-uk-figures-study
TooLittleGravitas@reddit
I suspect that's more about Australians being more aware and taking precautions. We Brits still tend to dive outside on even the hottest days without protection.
newbris@reddit
I guess that might explain having more occurrences than you should have. And the higher death rate probably comes down to worse detection and treatment from the attention level it gets compared to elsewhere.
tgerz@reddit
I’m with you. Southern California is probably different (closer to the coast is cooler but as you go east it gets wildly hot and is legitimate desert), but I enjoy the weather in London (and the bits of the UK I’ve been to).
HerbieC026@reddit
I’m a Suffolk resident too. Born and bred here. I do wish our houses were kitted out with air con lol. OP you will be absolutely fine here. Like any country we’ve got our share of dumb arses but on the whole we are ok lol.
No_Willingness5313@reddit
Please define ‘pisstakey’ for an American.
steveb858@reddit
Yup. Be prepared for shit weather.
iHateItHereSoShootMe@reddit
He gonna bring his own dunny paper? If not then why not?
tgerz@reddit
As someone who moved from San Diego to the UK for the weather this may not be true. I literally got tired of getting sunburnt even when layering lotion all the time.
This part may be different than OP but I really wanted rain. We barely got any rain in SD. I love cloudy, grey skies, cold mornings where it warms up throughout the day, having a warm cup of tea by the radiator.
I literally went outside and twirled in the street when we had that little bit of snow in London this last winter, because I’ve never lived any where that it would snow while I was at work. I know that part is ridiculous because it only happened once and it melted as it hit the ground.
WackyAndCorny@reddit
On the other hand you learn to appreciate the sunshine when it happens.
Theal12@reddit
donno. I came from a bright, hot climate and I adore the weather in Scotland- including winter
ThisWeekWithHugo@reddit
100% Australia and England are extremely similar in most ways socially its the weather that will be a really fuck for you
moubliepas@reddit
I think it generally depends on, ya know, the person.
I'm kinda confused by all the replies saying 'yes of course, we like Ozzies'. Is there a scale somewhere that I've missed, in order of nationalities we like to ones we don't?
Maybe I just have a weird social circle, but I've never heard anyone going "oh yeah, she seems nice, but she is Chinese" "oh, I thought she was from Nepal, what a bummer. She seemed so friendly"
There's also the really really obvious fact that, of all the nationalities that should get along best with Brits, I don't know any Brits who get along with all Brits. I know there are some types who judge people based on stuff like that, but I suspect passport nationality isn't their primary concern.
I do know that plenty of countries have a more demarked set of in-group / out-group demographics, but I was pretty sure that was mostly a thing in, and because of, the majority / leading groups being ethnically different to the locals and therefore having a pretty obvious set of cultural differences from one's neighbouring countries. Difficult to colonise a foreign country setting everyone up as equals.
I don't see any such excuse for the UK. We've got a long, long history of popping up in other countries that have resources or circumstances we prefer (as in, a good few hundred years of doing that in most of the world), so I don't see how anybody can push 'migration is only good if you're from a country that's a net benefit to our country' or 'if you're prepared to assimilate and look like the locals' if they have the slightest respect for Britain or England. Might as well claim Americans don't tolerate religion or that Spain is uniquely opposed to bullfighting.
Obviously not a slight on you personally, but I think there's been an increasing amount of talk about 'the right kind' of migrants, foreigners and social diversity, and a lot of the talk doesn't seem to be very British in its priorities.
We have plenty of prejudices of our own, and I don't see why we need to import other peoples'. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the traditional attitude of 'if someone's got good manners, sense of humour, and respect for a decent cup of tea, they'll be treated with as much respect as any other member of British society'.
Which isn't necessarily a lot, but it's a hell of a lot better than judging people according to their ethnicity, parental heritage or religion
ben_jamin_h@reddit
The question was 'will I fit in here?' and the answer is 'yes because we share a similar culture and sense of humour'.
The rest of your rant is obviously aimed at some wider problem than my comment, because I really don't know what you're talking about.
Select_Scarcity2132@reddit
I read every word and came to the same conclusion.
Ambient-Surprise@reddit
You will be fine just remember to always ware shorts and flip flops and even in winter just pop a hoodie on XD
Routine_Committee_67@reddit
Come to Northern England, we’ll make you welcome. Weather’s not the greatest but you’ll love our beautiful countryside and our friendly nature. You can do weekend trips to London to get trampled on by strangers with no manners and escape back up north to God’s country. I always say there’s no better country than England when the sun’s shining 😊😊

Better get used to living on an isolated island with bad weather :)
Overthemoon65@reddit
Island of strangers
Chunderdragon86@reddit
Australia is an isolated island just a bloody big one
Relative_Pilot_8005@reddit
When you are that big, you think of other places as isolated from you. Actually, we are fairly close to East Timor, Indonesia, PNG, etc.
Chunderdragon86@reddit
And nz
Necessary-Season-827@reddit
UK really isnt isolated, and major cities in Oz are 13 hours drive. A 2 hours radius in the UK you can see a great variety of towns and cities,
newbris@reddit
I know what you mean, but 2 hours from my major city in Australia would encompass 3 other cities 178k, 650k, 375k. So there is something ha ha
Relative_Pilot_8005@reddit
But If you really want some distance, try Perth WA to Adelaide SA drive time 43h 10min!
el_grort@reddit
Sobs in Scottish Highlands
thelastwilson@reddit
Lets be honest though. 2 hours in the Scottish Highlands is a much more interesting journey than some countries where the scenery wouldn't even change out the window on a straight road.
Relative_Pilot_8005@reddit
Like England. By the way, a quiz:- "What's the best thing to come out of England?"
"The road to Scotland!"
el_grort@reddit
True, but less helpful when it's the travel time to get somewhere to buy certain essentials not available at home. Logistically, it's a bit of a pain.
TheSecretIsMarmite@reddit
I've always thought it wasn't exactly great to be that far away from an A&E, having visited one a few times over the years either for myself or with the kids. As much as I love the Highlands it does feel just that bit too far away from everything.
el_grort@reddit
There are helicopters about in case something goes seriously wrong like that, in fairness, it's not really been in a factor in my life so far. Though if that is a requirement, being close to Inverness, or maybe at a push Fort William would seem to be the play?
TheSecretIsMarmite@reddit
Yes I'd want to be within striking distance of an A&E, but ideally not so far to need a helicopter. Id not want to need one when the weather was bad, which is why the Highlands is fine to visit but I'll happily leave it for the locals to live there. I've had a couple of broken bones over the years so it's something I would take in to account. I live rurally now but am only 15 minutes from the local A&E on NSL roads.

Silly_Hurry_2795@reddit
Sobs in bank holiday motorway traffic.. Two hours might get you one junction closer to where you were hoping to get to.
el_grort@reddit
I mean, in tourist season, especially bank/English school hols, we also get that, but on our single A-road servicing the place.
Also, Glenfinnan just being a perpetual bomb site of illegally parked traffic and congestion, mmmmmm.
Silly_Hurry_2795@reddit
That sounds like it's long or close.to the nc500....
el_grort@reddit
NC500 is to the north of it, but it's off of the NC500 roads. Glenfinnan is the one with the viaduct from Harry Potter, so it gets flooded for its own reason.
Silly_Hurry_2795@reddit
I feel your pain. We did a tour of Britain years ago. Home town to Jon o groats up the west coast all down the east and then south to lands end back up via Wales. Not in a camper or caravan but a normal car using b&bs and campsites. Back then we saw the crap that route was collecting with wild campers and vans stopping where they felt like it.
Relative_Pilot_8005@reddit
But the towns & cities all look alike!
Dic_Penderyn@reddit
Isolated? You can hop on atrain in the UK and be in Paris in 2¼ hrs, or Barcelona, Milan or Berlin in under 2 hrs by air.
PurplePlodder1945@reddit
If you’re in the East. Takes me at least 2 hours to get a train to London from Cardiff. And because the train prices are extortionate we take the national express which takes 4 hours! 4 hours of the M4. More coming back into Wales because it slows down to 19mph - if you’re lucky.
I do get your point though. I don’t think people realise how isolated the southern hemisphere is
BobbieMcFee@reddit
Australia is also an island - and with more sea than the Channel...
SnoopyLupus@reddit
We’re not isolated at all. It was one of the big reasons why I left New Zealand after living there for 8 years, our proximity to Europe etc. just gives you so much more scope for holidays, weekends away etc.
kernowjim@reddit

Jellied eels, you have to eat jellied eels. We will accept you as a patriot or a sane person.
Saxon2060@reddit
Why wouldn't you? People from the anglosphere, especially commonwealth countries, are seen as sort of "cousins." Brits' default impressions of Aus and NZ and Canadians is pretty high/we think you are like us.
Esie666@reddit
British are nothing like Canadians, or even Americans, the ones I've met personally are so obnoxious it's unreal, Australians on the other hand are like kindred spirits, not 2 serious, love a laugh and a joke and use the word cunt just as much as we do
Saxon2060@reddit
I do agree that Australians are the most like us but that's another example of so much difference on our small island. Where I'm from "cunt" isn't used as a filler at all and is still a very scathing insult. It would feel totally uncomfortable for people to be using the word in a joking or casual way consistently. I'd only ever say it if I really wanted to be insulting.
Esie666@reddit
Called my partner a cunt this morning before I gave her a kiss goodbye before she left for the day
nomis66@reddit
Pretty sure that’s not the norm in the UK. Most normal people still regard as a highly taboo word. Maybe if you’re a refuse collector who lives on a council estate, but if you’re a graduate or a professional, that word won’t be part of your vocabulary.
RandyMarshmall0w@reddit
You sound like a stuck up cunt.
kollectivist@reddit
Dunno. It was certainly in my ex's vocabulary. (MA Oxon, BPhil Liverpool, PhD UNSW).
nomis66@reddit
Obviously I also meant South East. God only knows what people get up to in the bad lands.
kollectivist@reddit
Thank you for that insight, Hyacinth.
Esie666@reddit
Nope most "graduates" are cunts
What % of the ultimate do you think is high skilled professional or educated to university?
nomis66@reddit
What a weird thing to say. It’s sounds like culturally you’re in a minority. You know, the wife beaters in the string vest with a roll up hanging out of your mouth who’s more likely to eat a book than read it. Imagine calling your partner that. To use your own parlance, I suspect you’re a wrongun.
TooLittleGravitas@reddit
Weird flex? (Speaking as a graduate). What makes you think I'm a c**t?

Saxon2060@reddit
I don't doubt that it's more normal elsewhere. Just observing that it's one of those regional differences!
Micha985@reddit
Depends where you are. I'm from the far north of Scotland, and it's a scandalous word there. I live in Glasgow, and it can be used as a term of endearment here.
newbris@reddit
> Where I'm from "cunt" isn't used as a filler at all and is still a very scathing insult. It would feel totally uncomfortable for people to be using the word in a joking or casual way consistently.
Same in Australia depending on context.
ClaraSeptic@reddit
Aussies, Kiwis and Brits share the same humour. Americans and Canadians not so much.
DrPerkyKSIforehead@reddit (OP)
And plus my mother is literally from your country
rose_reader@reddit
That won't matter - we don't tend to care where your parents were from. You're Aussie, we like Aussies, the end. Just don't be a dick and you'll do fine.
undead_sissy@reddit
You shouldn't bang on about that when you come here. It doesn't matter. It's europe, we have a billion immigrants. Nobody cares were your parents are from (unless you're nonwhite, then people might use it to be racist to you).
Wildman12343@reddit
You are also already complaining about the weather in your post. So you’ve got the small talk sorted
attilathetwat@reddit
Now they just have to practice complaining about everything and learning to Q properly
Canmar86@reddit
I'm a Canadian living in a small town in Devon. I once had a second home owner neighbour, who actually lives in Dorset, tell me to "go back to Canada!".
I regularly chat with people in pubs, and the discussion of immigrants comes up regularly. People are often shocked when I inform them that I'm actually an immigrant.
For the most part though, the people I've met here are very welcoming of commonwealth brothers and sisters. But there's always a few assholes who leave a bad impression.
TristanAtHis@reddit
canada is a bit of stretch
wc000@reddit
Yeah, people in the UK generally have no problem with people from English-speaking commonwealth countries like Australia, NZ, Canada... Not quite so much when it comes to English-speaking commonwealth countries like India, Jamaica, Botswana, Gambia, Nigeria...
Let's be frank; it doesn't matter where you're from, the racists aren't going to have a problem with you if you're white. If you're a white Australian who just got off the plane you have far less to fear from racists and xenophobes than a black person born in the UK.
ViSaph@reddit
Unfortunately true. Provided you're able bodied of course. Come here as a disabled person from any country and you'll get called some nasty stuff no matter your ethnicity because they'll assume you're here to take advantage of the sacred NHS, even being born and bred here I've been called a drain on society, a benefit scrounger, told the country would be better off without me, called a gimp, spaz, cripple, retard. And that's just the outright hatred, there's a thousand little things people do that let you know they don't really see you as a person. I love my country. Genuinely, I know we don't say that sincerely a lot but I do. But there's a larger than it should be subsection of our society that has little to no empathy or compassion for anyone slightly outside what they consider the "right kind" of people.
FlappyBored@reddit
Sometimes Aussies struggle in the UK because they are much more casually racist or in some cases openly so and depending on where they move they can find it jarring to have to hold that in.
newbris@reddit
I think that's your own racism showing.
As a dual national from London, Australians are racist at a similar level to British.
HannahRosina@reddit
Woah woah woah! Don’t come up north with your racism. Why do you think we would tolerate it?!
No-Strike-4560@reddit
Ehhhh
Just my experience, so appreciate this is only a subjective view, but the north does seem to be more racist than the south.
mtmp40k@reddit
I’m from the north, but live down south, attitudes to race, sexuality etc are rather different between the two in my experience
ClydusEnMarland@reddit
Nah, we're not racist. We hate everyone equally.
BrillsonHawk@reddit

FlappyBored@reddit
Brexit vote and Reform surge and general encounters.
WellGreenToffee@reddit
Neglected and fooled folk. Not all racist. I speak as someone living up here and disgusted that my council has been taken by Reform.
saryoak@reddit
The north jokes about it more, but people in the south tend to actually think it more lmao.
FlappyBored@reddit
Doesn’t actually line up with voting patterns or polling really.
The north jokes about it and thinks it.
saryoak@reddit
The north has been voting significantly more left wing than the south for DECADES 😂😂😂
FlappyBored@reddit
Too bad we aren't living in 1970 but 2025 where the North is the bedrock of Reform, Brexit and xenophobia in Britain.
LavishnessAgitated72@reddit
I would say xenophobia isn't exclusive to the North as a ex-southerner who moved to Scotland.
Farage's seat is in Essex.. Southeast England has a lot of Tory with significant labour/Lib Dem in London. The North is a complete mix too, a lot of Labour but yes they have reform and Tory seats.
South of England is just as racist as the North.

thehoneybadger1223@reddit
Yeah, the Aussies tend ro have a similar culture to us, and you'll probably be popular with the accent. A lot of people love the Australian accent here. The only thing is the weather difference. Winters can get very gloomy here, and depending in where you move to, very cold. It's a lot wetter here and colder in general than in Oz. I'm not sure on the price difference of stuff for you ao that's something to look up, stuff like the price of milk or whatever
Exciting-Ebb4764@reddit
You should consider Scotland.
NeonFaced@reddit
Easily, Australians are just British people with mullets.
DrPerkyKSIforehead@reddit (OP)
Except I don’t have a mullet I grew up in a rather British household and I was often bullied at school for my accent
NeonFaced@reddit
I live in a part of England where we sound a bit like Australians, especially to Americans. Culturally and linguistically it’s almost the same with British and Australians, the big difference you will find though we have a larger south Asian influence rather and than East Asian and the long dark winter and then long bright summers.
Plus no dangerous animals here but it can be very humid, people don’t realise that Britain is actually very humid, especially in the summer.
Sheckles@reddit
Literally anyone with an English accent sounds Australian to yanks. I'm Irish and got constantly asked if I'm Australian when I visited the US.
girlwithapinkpack@reddit
I watch a guy on TikTok who spoke for the first time and there were lots of comments from Americans stating they knew he was English. Bottle o water. He’s actually German speaking Swiss. They can’t tell at all.
Inevitable_Resolve23@reddit
No dangerous animals? I think you'll find weasels can be extremely intimidating.
flippertyflip@reddit
Which part of England is that?
NeonFaced@reddit
North Warwickshire, we have the nasal sound from Brummie and Yam Yam with northern pronunciations but with long vowels like in cockney, it’s really odd.
To British people it’s obviously a type of Midlands English but as it’s near the centre of England it has the mixture of northern, west and East Midlands, we are near the border of Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.
flippertyflip@reddit
Huh. Never heard of that. Interesting though.
I once read that Australian is closest to Cockney. Can't really see it myself though.
NeonFaced@reddit
I believe it’s the long vowels that people confuse it with cockney, but I think if you are not used to it different accents you pick up on how they say the words and nose the pitch and sound of the accent as much.
If you hear a Brunmie accent and then just get rid of the nasally sound and higher up the pitch it sounds a lot like a Welsh valley accent.
Beartato4772@reddit
You may need to grow one otherwise people won't believe you're Australian.
ClaraSeptic@reddit

DrPerkyKSIforehead@reddit (OP)
I don’t really like that style of clothes, I prefer to dress more English even though I was born in Australia
JC1286@reddit
Yes, of course.
Don’t let the internet fool you. The UK is for the most part, a very welcoming place.
Even in the small pockets of bigotry that exist, Australia aren’t one of the nations this is normally targeted towards.
You’ll be fine. You’ll get sick of bad weather, but you’ll fit in
Sudden-Requirement40@reddit
My boss when I lived in Ireland was an Aussie and people used to go on and on to him about immigrants. When he pointed out he was one it was always an AH not you, you white native English speaker your alright. I feel like it's the same thing...
JC1286@reddit
I think it really depends where you’re going. Major cities are much more diverse. Along with tourists, there isn’t the expectation that someone would speak good English.
Smaller towns and rural areas would definitely be as you describe though.
Sudden-Requirement40@reddit
I was more implying that some people (racists) that complain about immigration do not include white English speakers so Aussies don't count. Plus it's a common wealth country so that's also fine...
girlwithapinkpack@reddit
There’s a bit in House where he calls an Australian British and then when he’s corrected says “you put the Queen on your money… same thing”
cooperalexander68@reddit
London, you're right, but go to Birmingham it's like playing spot the white man quite literally these days. The UK is welcoming to anyone who is happy to pave their own way and integrate into british society. However, to the people coming here with poor reasoning, no intention of society contribution or integration. Then please stay put. Some may call it bigoted, but its basic common sense.
kuro68k@reddit
Depends. Are you white? Is your accent Australian?
Lived experience tells me that if the answer to either is no, your experience won't be as good as you might like. I don't know how it compares to Australia.
JC1286@reddit
Also depends where you’re moving too I guess.
Major cities are multi-cultural,(and all the better for it). And while of course xenophobia still happens there, it’s a small minority.
getmovingnow@reddit
London is now only 36% Anglo English so if you are white you will definitely stand out which is totally insane when you think about it .
terryturbojr@reddit
What's totally insane is if you genuinely think white people stand out in London.
undead_sissy@reddit
Yeah this is a ridiculous thing to say. I'm white, lived in London for 8 years, never stood out at all.
Agreeable_Ad_7988@reddit
Not that crazy considering we conquered 1/3 of the planet at one point and we live in a globalised world where borders are relaxing
JC1286@reddit
I’m not sure 1/3 people would be considered as ‘standing out’
Especially as if you factor in other people that would fit the ‘Anglo-English’ look. I.e. white people. If Americans, Australians, New Zealanders, and the majority of Europeans meet the ‘Anglo-English’ appearance, then even less so.
This also discounts people who work but don’t live in London, tourists, etc.
I just walked for 20 mins through the centre of London for work, and trust me, London is majority white ‘Anglo-British’ looking people.
Intelligent_Key_3806@reddit

Heard this 'joke' in the last week. Of course it's 'just banter '. To be honest, I think anyone who said this would assume it was so obviously 'banter' they would be surprised if anyone was upset. YMMV
Intelligent_Key_3806@reddit
Well that’s good!! Doesn’t change my experience though.
Then I had a boss have a laugh at the cost of the Anzacs at Gallipoli that lost their lives as the British drank tea. I’m probably gonna get flamed in this thread, but as an Australian that was crazy disrespectful. ‘Well aren’t they stupid.’ Can still hear his voice haha. 13 years ago.
Chef with a history of violence, also kicked me so hard on the pelvis the haematoema (whatevs the spelling) crippled me for about 4 weeks and I was crawling up to the toilet on the 2nd floor of my flat because I couldn’t walk. I’d broken it 18mnths previous in a motorcycle accident. Anyway, I remember being at Asda and my Danish gf and I were walking back and the cramps from the painkillers immobilized me as well, didn’t know what it was. Bad experience - Don’t work for the Michelin would be my advice.
Note: the convict bs didn’t come from him though. I’ve heard it only a couple of times. But still, that’s some bullshit. Says me. A man with no criminal record.

Australians are one of our favourite kinds of foreigners. We really like Canadians too but they can get confused with those other people.
MagicalParade@reddit
Of course you’re welcome, but I do think you should adjust your expectations. Brits generally don’t rise as early as Aussies because we don’t have the weather to entice us out, unless we’re forced to for work. Coffee shops and supermarkets tend to open around 6-7am, but everything else opens later. You won’t have the free time you expect to have here, compared to Australia, and winters can be pretty dark and cold. The job market also isn’t great.
But I do love living here, and I’m sure that weather and work aside, you’ll really enjoy it.

We're a smaller island. In place of heat and humidity, we have rain. Except when we also have heat and humidity.
Australia if anything has a drier heat than we do. We just experience heat much less often. I only spent 3 weeks in Australia, but it was during the summer and it was a lot less humid than the UK (granted it was significantly hotter)
If that all sounds fine to you, then by all means try it out. Brits and Aussies usually get on just fine.
Relative_Pilot_8005@reddit

Australia has cold, dry heat, humid heat and extremely humid heat. All depends where you're from as size of the whole of Europe. 6 major weather zones.

Fellow aussie here with the same British passport through parents thing.
I ran away from Australia in 2014 literally because of the heat and humidity. (Okay and the spiders. And crazy housing costs)... And that oppressive sunshine! You'll do great here. It's cold, properly cold. Like you need to wear actual warm clothes cold and see your breath in the air! I count down the days till Winter every year. The DARKNESS is coming!! 🤩
So literally everyone will think you're insane leaving, is my experience. British people hate the weather here. But I find it perfect. Summer is kind of magical because it actually is a very different feel than winter. There are ACTUAL seasons here! It's just amazing. I've been here over 10 years now and I still marvel at the beauty of the seasons and get excited for those crisp winter mornings, or the hazy summer afternoons with dandelions in the magical sunlight.
Do it. Australia is oppressive, especially in the tropics.
Bonus: being able to walk on your lawn bare foot or through a field or forest off the path and not fear for your life. I'm still getting there. The trauma is deep.

AlGunner@reddit
There wouldnt be any problem with you being here but Im not sure it would be a good choice. Its cold and damp half the year, dark winters, rain and more rain, except when we're having a drought. Roads are always busy and its crowded. Things have changed particularly since covid and its not as easy to get out and meet people as it used to be (or maybe thats just because Im older now). Wages are low and rents are high so the standard of living isnt great. A lot of single people cant afford their own place so have to rent a room in an HMO (House of Multiple Occupation) sharing with strangers. we have high humidity here as well, but on winter that results in damp in a lot of homes.
On the plus side people wont care where you come from so you shouldnt have a problem being accepted, we have beautiful green countryside, there are still some nice pubs around despite many closing all the time, etc.
While some Aussies do love it here I would recommend maybe coming for a holiday first or at least having a back up plan to go back quickly if you dont like it. I'd even offer to swap huses for a year but my wife would never agree.
CaptainSeitan@reddit
Come on the weather isn't half as bad as you Brits make it out, Australia has winter too and on the south coast it's probably only 5 to 10% colder and water here in the UK in winter in general, summer is lovely here, but yes the lack of AC can be a challenge on the hottest days. Plenty of lovely countryside, and yes cost of living is high in the south of England, but then it's just as high in the Big aussie cities too. All in all I love living here.
CaptainSeitan@reddit
I'm an Aussie who has been living here over two years now, you'll be fine. I find I'm accepted pretty easily, even people who are against immigration don't seem to have an issue with Aussies coming here, which I find odd.
Just get used to people saying, oh this must be cold to you on a lovely warm 27c day, and oh, I'd love to move to Australia, but the spiders and snakes, you can have some right fun with the last one ;)

It's easier in London. Not sure how old you are, this will impact. I don't think people necessarily have space in their peer groups in smaller cities and if you're single that's another complication. The class system is real and that can be a shock too. I get rude comments about my accent all the time and people don't really believe you've chosen to move to the UK because you like it. I think moving countries is hard and the personal cost is high. Though I just flew to Sweden for the weekend, which was something I could never think about at home.

Mmmmm no. You’d be swapping heat and humidity on a continent sized nation for cold and humidity on an overcrowded, grey little island where people rarely tend to interact.
You’d be better off moving to the US- it has a much greater variety in terms of people, environment and weather. You’d also have better economic prospects and greater protections for your individual rights and freedoms.
Having lived in the UK my whole life, I’d much rather live in the US. The people there have a bit of gumption and “can do” about them.

There's a constant stream of Australians and New Zelanders in the UK.

As an Australian who moved to the UK, the heat and humidity are what I miss the most (that and magpies singing). I know the UK isn't as cold as many other places, but 6 months a year under ten degrees wears you down.
It doesn't rain as much here as it does in Sydney, on average, but you can go weeks without seeing the sun, in a faint misty drizzle. If that sounds romantic to you, then you'll love it. Global warming aside, summers are really pretty here, a few hot days, but generally green and pleasant, as opposed to Australia's brrown and on fire.
On the plus side, no cockroaches, hardly anything that bites or stings, and the food's honestly not as bad as everyone jokes. Internet's generally fast and cheap too, compared to Oz.

I’ve lived in Australia and here it’s more populated and a lot nearer places buts it’s not as safe and the weather unless you’re from the southern part of Oz then it’s going to be a culture shock. Randombichidk@reddit

I would heavily advise taking vitamin D tablets all year round though, my doctor said everyone here should do that and I think if ur used to heat and sun that especially applies. It is pretty rainy here but it’s actually more that we just don’t get much sun, it always makes the news when we have a week of it bc it’s normally very cloudy.
Also where we’re located on the Earth’s tilt means even when it is sunny we actually receive less sun/ vitamin D. I think that’s why brits on holiday stick out for being bright red and plastered in suncream haha

You'll fit in great love, we're the same people. My partner is an Aussie and he wants to come here for the same reasons as you, I want to go to Oz though lol. Mate, other than the weather (which sucks balls sometimes) and the fucking trains! (Always late/delayed/expensive/overcrowded/dirty!) Australians and New Zealanders are loved here, we know both have been there for us EVERY time we have needed them, and to our shame, our leaders have consistently not done the same in return.. We are family... kettle is on.... beer is cold... bring a pizza or something....
KnightShiningUK@reddit
If you're white, you'll be fine.
It's just non white immigrants the indigenous UK folks have issues with.
That's why Ukrainians were welcomed with open arms, but those from Palestine weren't for example.
LeagueObvious1747@reddit
Ukraine was the victim. Not the aggressor. However, Palestine still had overwhelming support in the streets every weekend for months.
The UK is the best place for immigrants of all colours and religions to live. We're the most welcoming. We leave those who wish to completely self-isolate to do so. To the point of not making too much of a fuss when Muslim women start setting themselves on fire and are murdered for someone else's "honour".
So please, fuck off with the racist narrative.
Affectionate_Film927@reddit
It’s not always a case of race but sometimes religion. There’s a large portion of people in this country that don’t like Islam or Muslims and they seem to associate every negative aspect of Islam with anyone part of that religious group.

A wit. No, the royal family are the only beneficiaries who get supported by the UK state in that kind of luxury.
When you are a UK citizen due to having a parent who was born in the country, as opposed to being born in the country yourself, you have the right to go their and work, but until you have been living and working there for a certain length of time you can't get state housing or unemployment benefits.

Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Of course! WELCOME FRIEND!
We love the antipodeans.
Our winters can be rainy and dark, but it gives you an excuse to sit in a nice pub by a fire, which can be no bad thing.
Our summers can be very hot, not as hot as yours of course, but even my auzzie mates here in London complain it is too hot - because our buildings are just not set up for it. We don't really have air con, and our homes are insulated for warmth.
You'll have to get used to your year being upside down, eg. cold Christmas.
Our spiders are much smaller and almost none* of our wildlife can fuck you up/kill you. Unlike in Australia. Where everything will bite and maim you for just existing.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Okay SOME of our wildlife can fuck you up, but only if you mess with it. Your wildlife goes out of its way to get into your business; ours is frightened. Yes, a big wild stag could technically gore you, but they're more likely to run away.
Ask any British person and they'll tell you that a swan COULD break your arm - then ask them if they know of anyone that has ever happened to and they will tell you no.
newbris@reddit
To be honest must stuff in Australia runs away as well. The most annoying is the magpie.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Magpies are very smart little things! I can't imagine the noise they make off the top of my head but perhaps they don't really congratulate where I live. Seagulls are the pests in my are! I recently watched a lady get rather aggressively harassed by a gull after leaving a bakery with a tasty treat.
newbris@reddit
Australian Magpie is a different bird family to the British one. It dive bombs you in nesting season and scares the bejesus out of you.

Whether you would personally enjoy it is another question that’s completely subjective.

My husband lived in UK for 13 years before we met. He’s Australian with a British father. Came over to work here in 2001 in finance. In 2014 when we married we went to live in Australia for ten years came back last year. He had no trouble of not feeling welcome. People are fascinated by life in Australia especially as he grew up in the outback and went to indigenous schools because it was only school in area. I don’t think you’ll have any problems.
DrPerkyKSIforehead@reddit (OP)

That’s true. I had a relative visit us from QLD (I live in Scotland). She came for my mum’s birthday in June. Her friend said “just take your winter stuff you’ll be fine”. 1) So you can get back if you wish be it to visit your mum or friends in Aus.
2) If you hate it here or there is any sort of issue back in Aus (I hope not) you can get back without a fuss.
3) Aussie passports are more expensive over here so worth getting a 10yr one in Aus.
As you are moving from a very humid place it will be quite the change.

Marsh-Gibbon@reddit
No reason you wouldn’t, but remember that wherever you go, you’ll find yourself there. X
GavUK@reddit
By most people, yes. However, depending where you move to and how easily or not you make friends, it is possible to feel isolated and alone here too.
My girlfriend has an Australian friend who recently became a UK citizen. Anyway, as you are used to more sun than you are likely to get in the UK, you should probably take vitamin D supplements if you do move here. To be fair, many Brits should too, as many of us tend to be deficient in it.
Once you have a GP and have been here a while, it would probably be worth getting a blood test (not sure if this particular test is available at pharmacies too?) to check your vitamin D levels before you look at high doses of supplements as, like most things, there is such thing as too much. If you levels are really low, ideally see if supplements resolve that, as I've heard from my girlfriend and a couple of others that vitamin D injections can be unpleasant.
Also, if you like Vegemite note that Marmite is really not the same. Having tried both, I prefer Marmite (or other similar yeast extracts), but that may because that is what I've grown up with. I think there are places that you will be able to buy Vegemite if you do want it.
AnyOlUsername@reddit
You wont escape the heat and humidity. But to be fair, you will only need to tolerate it for a couple short bursts a year.

Bardsie@reddit
You're already complaining about heat and humidity... The British spirit is alive and well in you.
upsidedown-aussie@reddit
Aw you sound like me!! Humidity, heat and being so far away from everything, I felt trapped in Australia and wanted out!
You're so lucky you have citizenship, it's so difficult if you don't! I've lived here for 6 years and am still on visas lol. But I love it here, I fell in love with my British man, and married him earlier this year. I'm way more suited to the weather here, although the odd summer day where it's scorching hot is unbearable because the humidity is quite high here, and nothing is air-conditioned!! A lot of people hate the cold and dark. I haven't hit a point yet where I really dislike it, I just feel I appreciate the opposite season more here. After months of trying to sleep while it's light outside, I then enjoy what I call "cozy weather," and curling up in bed when it's dark and raining with a hot drink and a book - can't beat it! Simultaneously though, I appreciate Spring and Summer more after months of cold winter, when everything is waking up and is more lively. There is something I love about every season here, which I didn't feel in Australia (the summer months felt long and endless and draining).
The thing I find the hardest, and it's not their fault, it's very much a cultural thing, is British people can be rather pessimistic 🤣 I feel it most when they talk about Britain, they often point out the problems with the country. I often say to them they don't know how lovely this country is! I'm sure that's not everyone though and I hate to generalise. But there is definitely more of a relaxed, positive, "can-do" attitude amongst Aussies.
Have you been here for a holiday? If you're a citizen there isn't anything from stopping you coming over for a visit with a return ticket booked! And with no visa worries you can make the move any time!
Mango_Honey9789@reddit
We're very welcoming, and unfortunately, the ones who aren't very welcoming will still be welcoming of you.
Reminds me of a story of Americans complaining about immigration infront of their Canadian friend, who points out that they too are an immigrant, only for the Americans to respond "yeah but.... You're white?"
We are not that binary and not that harsh, especially outwardly. You'll hate our weather, hate our politics and hate our job market, there's a reason everyone's flocking down under for jobs, but mostly culturally you'll be welcomed, maybe fetishised a bit for accent and exoticism, but if you wanna, come give the UK a go we're decent people
PartTimeLegend@reddit

The only word of caution is you are white, be aware we may talk quite differently about race to Australians. I don’t mean this in a bad way, nor did I notice it myself, but it seems to get talked about enough by my Ozzy friends that it’s worth mentioning. They say when they return to Australia they are shocked by the “casual racism”. It’s not that they are hateful people at all, it’s to do with the history plus cultural & linguistic norms. Like I said I haven’t personally noticed it, but I’ve had Ozzy friends talking about it after going back to visit. Additionally my sister had a shock when working abroad with some Ozzy volunteers and was quite upset about what she heard.

Time_Substance_4429@reddit
Be aware though that on the occasions that the UK gets hot, the humidity is also quite high but we are not set up for it in the way that you’ll be used to in Australia.
As someone else also pointed out, the cold, wet and dark months can have a big impact on some people who find it more than a little unpleasant.

Yes, we’re an isolated island but it’s only a couple hours flight to a different country, definitely a different ball park than travelling to and from Australia lol.
And the weather is pish but idk, I kinda love that about it here. Sure it’s chucking it down in the morning but there’s a great chance it’ll be a cracking afternoon 😂

People do find English winters a bit depressing, but you can always go back to Townsville for new years.
Usually people from your part of the world do fine.

If you want to avoid humidity as far as possible select somewhere nearer to the coast. I live on the North Sea coast and it is fine. My parents lived in landlocked Worcestershire, which I always found to be very airless and stuffy during the summer months. Happily we have plenty of coastline to choose from. I’m sure you will be welcomed.

Be glad to have you. But I recommend coming over for a couple of weeks in November first to see how you feel about the short days and the cold rain.

You sound like the "right type of foreigner".....so you will be 100% fine.

If you’re white no one will have a problem with you. Unfortunately, there are some racist cunts

Culturally speaking, Aussies fit in very well here… probably the best of any non Brits barring maybe Irish and New Zealanders.
I’d warn you though if you think living down under is a lonely and isolated island you’d be in for a rude awakening. It’s the same here with the added bonus you’ll get a clinical vitamin D deficiency. I know personally plenty of people who have emigrated to Australia for better pay, standard of living, and weather and don’t regret it at all. Sometimes the other man’s grass is always greener.
Still, if you come we’ll be pleased to have you.

Regarding the weather, move to South would suit you best

Personally, I love Aussies. But believe me the weather will make you home sick.

Yes, I've worked with plenty of Aussies and they always fit in well.
