Idaho Preppers

I’m wanting to get more remote and always hear about Idaho. Is there a general area that is considered prepper territory with like minded individuals?
DaveyAllenCountry@reddit
It along with Montana have become impossible to buy in
romanswinter@reddit
All of northern Idaho is pepper territory. Good luck affording to buy property up there though. Easily one of the most inflated real estate markets any where.
I lived there for 10 years and then moved a couple of years ago so I can buy an actual 20 acre homestead in another state that didn’t cost a million dollars.

All of northern idaho is also pretty backwards. Nazis, real cult offsprings of the LDS church, bunkers, unironic J6ers. My wife’s family is from there, I’m not exaggerating lol.
Once when she was dating an Asian guy her aunt from there called her and tried to get her to leave him because “the Chinese want to harvest the organs of white Christian women”.

10 acre with a double wide and shop built in ‘17 outside of Weippe is now 600k

Dang... what are people funding this with? Retirement? Rich people money?

Sell a house in a high cost of living area. Buy something in the middle of nowhere for less, even if the price is still inflated.
One of the driving factors behind neighborhood friction as “natives” are unable to afford houses in the areas their families have lived in for decades or even centuries. “Gentrification.”

That's insane

Worth reading up on the American redoubt to make sure it's a good fit for you too

Came here to say this.

North of Sandpoint, the closer to Canada and MT the better. Or just cross over into MT anywhere off of HWY 2 until you approach Whitefish then the prices skyrocket. There are some real recluses and anti-government people living up there, so keep that in mind.

I’m in Whitefish now, I’ll gander north and look around. Prices here seem pretty high compared to NW Kansas

Oh, nice! If you are enjoying the Flathead Valley vibe but have a low budget, check out Coram, Hungry Horse and Marion. This is assuming you want to be remote, have trees and to be within 50 miles of provisions in Kalispell/Whitefish. Good luck!!!

Remember that lady that shot that husky puppy and facebooked what a great wolf killer she was—- she is just one rest in the Marion, HH, Coram area.
Money_Ad1068@reddit
Uf. Yes I do remember that. The photos she posted were so clearly a husky it made me sick. Our family raised husky/wolf hybrid sled dogs.

Appreciate ya

If you want cheaper prices you gotta head east from here. Eastern Montana and the Midwest in general is still dirt cheap compared to the mountains and further west.

Keep wildfire in mind wherever you go in the west. I picked 30 acres on the lava plains of Eastern Oregon. No landslides, earthquakes, thick forests, nosy neighbors. Also no jobs or groundwater, severe climate. I'm retired, minimalist, love the spaciousness of the desert. No crops, no animals. Deep pantry, tradeable skills. Pick places other people don't like, and find workarounds.
SquirrelMurky4258@reddit (OP)
I like the way you think!
meowzulator@reddit
i also have hiding places in the lava beds if needed. can walk there. caches.
incruente@reddit
Depends what you mean by "like minded". There are a LOT of racists more to the west and north; like, actual klan outposts.
Eastern Idaho? It's the biggest county in Utah. LOTS of mormons.
The whole urban/rural split in general attitudes and ideas is along the same general axis as everywhere else I've lived.

More wacoed now. Not just individuals
GhostOfJeanTalon@reddit
I’ve heard it described as being one of the few places on Earth where you can enter a bank, see two skin-heads in line and have them not be there together.
nanneryeeter@reddit
While the klan is bad, apparently their dinner menu is above par.
ResponsibleBank1387@reddit
American Falls. LDS. Spuds and sugar beets, a dairy not far for all the sour cream and butter, Utah is close for salt.
Be totally ready, they are more prep than you ever thought of.
Lenarios88@reddit
Somewhere with good jobs and low cost of living would likely benefit you more if you aren't already retired. I get wanting to live somewhere safe from natural disasters and nuclear targets but you can prep everything you need for your family without joining some local militia of gravy seals.
Greywolfuu@reddit
I'm curious about this too.
hope-luminescence@reddit
A lot of people have been moving to Idaho, land prices and the like are kind of being bid up. There are other places that may deserve attention.
"Like minded" can be a thorny phrase, obviously "like minded" to yourself depends on what your own mind is like.
the_walkingdad@reddit
Idaho is full. Look into Wyoming and Montana.
In all seriousness, there are a lot of prepper-minded people here. Most of it is driven by the culture that is common with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon). Lots of focus on independence, resilience, emergency preparedness, etc.
That said, Idaho is getting really expensive and there aren't nearly as many opportunities to "get remote" that you would expect. Land and cost of living has gotten far more expensive than it used to be.
In Southeast Idaho, you have most of the conservative prepper and LDS folks. Central Idaho (ie, Boise) you have tons of liberals who are more outdoor-minded than say, a liberal from Manhattan. North Idaho you have more conservative Christian nationalists who are also into prepping.
Regardless, gotta know who your neighbors are if you're trying to find "like-minded" individuals.

My kids are in Utah and I never even considered it. Thanks
BallsOutKrunked@reddit
Nevada mountains checking in. Everyone outside of Washoe and Clark is basically a prepper out of necessity.
Some areas are barren desert but I'm pretty sure we have more mountain ranges, number wise, than any other state. Perennial creek along my property, 35gpm well recharge rate.
SmilingAmericaAmazon@reddit
Washoe are preppers too. NV Energy is a joke and when the pass closes on trader Joes restocks their shelves
BallsOutKrunked@reddit
Didn't mean to be throwing shade at my fellow nevadan!
the_walkingdad@reddit
Utah is a great place too
MagHagz@reddit
So you’re looking for other white supremacists? Idaho is definitely the place for you.
turbolvr@reddit
The yak is cheap in Montana but Utah is prepper territory. Way more homes with basements and food storage.

Check out the book "Strategic Relocation: North American Guide to Safe Places." Make sure to get the latest edition which I think is the 4th.
sevbenup@reddit
Tons of racist white people I’ve heard
Secret-Tackle8040@reddit
We call idaho "LAPD North" because so many little piggies retire there.
OnTheEdgeOfFreedom@reddit
It's maybe just me, but a phrase like "prepper territory with like minded individuals" conjures up images of guys in camo with bunkers and long guns, muttering about foreigners and government overthrow.
Because prepping is just being prepared for emergencies and it's more about common sense than some sort of full blown mindset, so what there is to be like-minded about I'm not sure, but that phrase reeks of attitudes I'd leave a state over, not head towards.
If you're asking about a particular culture, ask openly and specifically which culture, so people won't make unwarranted assumptions. And if all you mean is community where people know how to fix things and deal with disasters, pretty much all of rural will fit the bill.
