What does it mean calling someone a 'top hat' as an insult?

Was rewatching Early Doors and one says "Open the door....come on you top hat..." I think I heard it in the Royale Family too.

Twat. Same as if you watch 80s episodes of Only Fools And Horses they'll sometimes call each other berks. Berkley Hunt = cunt.

I did not know that's where berk came from as an insult

Yeah I found this out much later in life. AFTER my father had spent my childhood calling me a berk.

I’m guessing you’re not British. Said in the correct tone (normally preceded by the word ā€˜absolute’) any noun can be an insult. ā€œYou absolute ice bucketā€ ā€œWhat a left shoeā€ ā€œThat man is an absolute picture frameā€ They mean nothing… yet, to another Brit, they mean everything.

Did they say Top Hat or Top Cat? I only think of the that because (occasional) Manchester slang for the Police is "the Dibble".

You don't have to censor 'prat', fella. In fact, words like fuck and cunt are also fair game and can be written in full too

Can be two different things either mocking someone for being posh/being pretentious or used as a way to call them a prat/twat

DazzlingSwimming6425@reddit

Isn't it a sanitised way of saying twat on TV?

No idea but on context something like calling them posh.
