Kraft Singles tighten and brown…no melting

I wanted an open faced tuna melt…this is the nightmare I was left with after popping them in the oven under the broiler.
balla148@reddit
You should check out the expiration date on those bad boys, that alone explains why they don’t function like actual cheese
Emreeezi@reddit
Did you try putting Vaseline on it
Lord_Jamaal@reddit
That's the good shit though...
Admirable_Ardvark@reddit
The plastic helps keep the form when it melts
ope_sorry_there@reddit
If you have a creamery near you or other options I highly recommend trying other American cheese. Non Kraft American is less "plastic-y".
Anonstarr@reddit
Kraft singles aren’t meant to be oven baked lmaoo 😭 should’ve toasted it on a pan, added the Kraft ontop and covered it. The steam woulda made it super gooey in less than a minute
hogey989@reddit
Pull that top layer off. You'll have the meltiest cheese ever underneath.
But the top layer also tastes fine. I routinely do this with ham+singles
GuessRealistic6714@reddit (OP)
I mashed them together and made a proper sandwich. I couldn’t look at that abomination.
ex-farm-grrrl@reddit
I feel like you might be overreacting a tad
pekingeseeyes@reddit
Why don't you just put the cheese under the ham?
soundchefsupreme@reddit
Prime shitty food porn! We’ve got a tuna melt where you’ve heated the tuna salad (barf) and used American cheese food. Five star failure. Bravo.

💪💪💪
wambulancer@reddit
It definitely melted you just went past that point, at which point yes it begins to brown and crisp up, under a broiler kraft needs like, 40 seconds, tops
GuessRealistic6714@reddit (OP)
I watched it through the glass…waiting for magic…magic never came.
PawnWithoutPurpose@reddit
The reason it doesn’t melt, is because it’s not cheese. It’s flavoured milk proteins with stabilisers. The burning is the stabilisers, next time just pour the slices into a hot sandwich, that should be enough heat to make it feel melted enough, or just use real cheese
canonry@reddit
It didn't melt because he was watching it.
rakondo@reddit
Not true. It's real cheese that is ground and melted, combined with an emulsifying agent and other ingredients
soundchefsupreme@reddit
It’s literally watered down cheese. It’s emulsified with water so you have “more cheese” and salt added to make up for the watered down flavor.
BigNastyG817@reddit
A watched cheese never melts.
soundchefsupreme@reddit
My wife is not from the US and she was struggling with a recipe once where the “cheddar” she was using wasn’t doing what it was supposed to. I had to explain to her how food in America works and point out how the shredded velveeta she’d bought was not cheddar cheese but “cheddar flavored velveeta” she never made that mistake again.
D_Crosby@reddit
Looks like a barf royal, with cheese!
BedSpreadMD@reddit
Are they actually craft singles or the cheap knock off "imitation American cheese" that's the absolute cheapest, and doesnt melt?
GuessRealistic6714@reddit (OP)
They’re the real deal. Maybe they were past their prime.
RyuujiStar@reddit
Is that a grilled charlie??
Fine-Upstairs-6284@reddit
Cuz it’s not real cheese. If you want the meltiness I’d suggest getting LOL or something from your local grocery store deli counter
Why_Cry_@reddit
They do melt quickly but they hold their shape and don't break, that's kind of the selling point.
trixiejeansmeanbeans@reddit
I switched to crystal farms when i want plastic cheese. It melts better.
skillmau5@reddit
I think the direct heat just browns the milk solids or dries it out on top. I’d bet it’s pretty melty under that little top skin. I can’t speak about Kraft specifically, but people have a weird aversion to processed cheese. Deli quality American is just cheddar with emulsifying salts, maybe sodium citrate and some others. Nothing to be afraid of really. Kraft is probably its own animal though, I’d imagine it has a decent amount of ingredients.
the_inbetween_me@reddit
Out of curiosity, did you buy them from Costco?
The Kraft singles I got from Costco behaved super weird, but the ones I have bought from a grocery store behave as expected.
CoffeeExtraCream@reddit
You're supposed to take it out of the wrapper first!
GuessRealistic6714@reddit (OP)
Sadly, I did.
Soft_Delivery_3889@reddit
Yeah but under that tight brown shell will be liquid goodness. We don’t speak poorly of the Kraft Single, of the cheese wrapped in plastic. We encourage its skin, love it, care for it.
Also, on a serious note is this off brand? Off brand doesn’t always melt right
GuessRealistic6714@reddit (OP)
I added some Vaseline to moisturize it. That helped it a bit.
It was name brand. Such a betrayal.
Hi240@reddit
kraft singles, cant really expect much more
GuessRealistic6714@reddit (OP)
I had hope. I guess in grilled cheese they just turn into glue. Lesson learned. Can’t ball on a budget with Singles.
duskymourn@reddit
Because it isn't cheese, it's an emulsion , same as burger cheese, it doesn't melt naturally and when it does it turns like that
talashrrg@reddit
What? It’s specifically made to melt well. OP got it too hot.
asyork@reddit
Yeah, it melts great, but if you manage to dry it out you get this.
Local_Satisfaction12@reddit
The fat content is not high enaugh to make it melt properly.
